Fun Fact: This game is actually the precursor to the Golden Sun games on the Gameboy Advance and the DS. Both games are developed by Camelot Software, featuring music composed by Motoi Sakuraba. Camelot also created the Shining Force games for Sega.
I got this game sent to me from family friends in Ireland when I was like 13... Still holds up by my standards although the part where Samus loses his strength drags your whole team down significantly.
This was the first jrpg I had on the PS1. Loved it. My brother would watch me play. I think I spent at least 60 hrs on it to beat it. I recall having a terrible time memorizing the route in a temple.
I think this game is brilliant. And to this day I am still trying to find a working copy. Every copy I've tried in the last 4 years has been corrupted.
That was a nice review about an RPG that many missed out (and good thing they missed out because Beyond the Beyond was nothing special). Thanks Jonathan!
Looking back at this you can really see as far as battle animations go a lot was reused years later for the golden sun GBA games. It's a shame that Camelot are stuck making Mario sports games these days as it would be good to see a new RPG or two from them.
I loved it. It was the first games I ever played on the ps1 when I was in preschool. This is how I started to love jrpgs. I used to live in tokyo japan so when moving to california when I was four years old I just played this game a lot. Way too much. This and Rayman. Until growing up to like first grade and playing that bloody roar and twisted metal. Good times!!
The title of the game makes sense when one realizes that the main character is going beyond the boundaries of the known world to save someone important to him.
This game along with others like Shining Force and Golden Son were all made by Camelot Softwere, so they do have some similarities, they all seem intentional as well.
This was the first playstation game I bought (mine came with battle arena toshindon in 1996). I loved this game so much. I'm currently replaying it right now and man is it ever unforgiving. The amount of backtracking makes it tedious at times. (especially in Zalagoon and the sewers).
Random battles have been the main reason I have a hard time enjoying a lot of RPGs. I'd much rather be able to SEE the enemies I'm about to fight before I fight them. Being able to avoid them or choose which to fight first. I don't like having to fight random enemies I can't see every 10 steps. Especially when I'm just trying to get to a town to heal or buy something. Fighting enemies every 10 steps is ok in an action game, but when the game has to stop, and load up a completely different screen for a battle that ends up taking 10 minutes...every single time. It gets a bit old. I think Pokemon did it right by having a random battle system, but limiting it to tall grass, caves, and water. Meaning most of the time, you could avoid random battles if you wanted, especially when you were backtracking. But then they forced you into random battles in a few specific locations, to up the difficulty. I'm not a huge fan of Earthbound, but even they had a decent idea of making it so battles were just skipped completely if you were a high enough level and the game knew there was a 100% chance of you winning. Could have started at a bit of an earlier level, because Earthbound was still grindy as fuck, but it was at least a good IDEA.
This was actually a really good review, CGRUndertow's review have gone downhill as of late with reviews usually not talking about everything the game offers and instead going off on some random tangent. This was too the point and quite entertaining. I actually want to play the game now.
for a ps1 game it has ages very good ,unlike FF games have, you can enjoy this game if you like old school RPGs if not then dont play it ,its not as good as a dragon quest game but is is a great game ,i just wish they had made a 2nd beyond the beyond game
The dungeon where you fight Percy is ass, at least to a 14- year-old me. There's traps to drop you to lower levels and I could never seem to memorize their locations.
I got this game back in 96, I think, because there were no other rpg games for the PS . I REALLY tried to make myself like it,but I couldn't. It was just awful. I was SO EXCITED when Wild Arms came out, though. I could finally stop playing this atrocity and start playing a real rpg.
+sabata I tried so hard to like it,I really did. It was the only one available on the ps at the time,so I did appreciate it. But,man...I just couldn't get into it no matter how I approached it. I was worried that this was the only rpg the ps would get. THANK GOD I was wrong!
+sabata To be honest, there weren't any really great rpgs on the ps until ff 7. Wild Arms was good, but not that good. It was a great replacement for this garbage, though!
The random battles aren't the only thing wrong with this game. There are a few LITERALLY hidden locations that are NEEDED to progress in the story and there is absolutely no way to find them without a guide (Lorele's location after the battle in her castle and Merlin's cave were the most egregious but there are more). Good luck with this one as the battles, as the video states, are far too common (I laughed out loud when I looked up what the monster bait item was for) and are just annoying because of the unreliable gimmick that they tried to add to it for harder hits. If you aren't a huge RPG fan, this would be a waste of time for you. For those people, press up and the triangle button at the same time at the title screen for a secret cut scene.
This game gets a ton of hate for some reason. It isn't bad by any stretch, just extremely traditional even by the standards of the day. Mechanically it wouldn't have been out of place in the early Super Nintendo era.
its to bad camelot has not planned a new Shining Force game, when they left sega for nintendo they made a deal with sega where they could not make a new Shining Force game for any other system, that is too bad because a new Shining Force would be great,i would even love a new beyond the beyond, nintendo is the parent company of camelot, they did great with all three golden sun games,we need a new RPG from them and it would not hurt nintendo at all they gave the wii u a new RPG,nintendo needs RPGs
this reviewer is quite good he does his job well.. which is.. reviewing the game...! TJ and Derrek is ruining CGR wih their shakespearean style of review .. which for example starts with the description of the game or title.. and then ending on how the sun was actually there and why the trees has leaves... you know what i mean..?? i hate those two hippies..
this was the first video game I ever played lol, I still have it not the greatest game kinda bland and some of the puzzles were way too hard but still fun, now i feel old
I know what you mean, they try to be entertaining by reviewing the game in metaphors and then reviewing the other 95% of the game as shallow/quick as possible. I would say they know what they are talking about when it comes to games, but they just annoy me when they review things. Meh :(

all fantastic
Long live CGR Undertow!
I swear, this is actually a Shining Force type game. Same art style, same music style. Must have been the same developers.
I know it's late, but yes, it's the same developers.
I got this game sent to me from family friends in Ireland when I was like 13... Still holds up by my standards although the part where Samus loses his strength drags your whole team down significantly.
dfon't forget..... by holding Up and then pressing Triangle button you get a secret intro!
I was 9 when I first played this game.. it was very difficult for me at that time! good review thanks
Loved the review! keep it up dude!
it's style reminds me alot of Shining Force, but with a different combat mode, I must get find a copy of it
looking at the way this game was released first, this game was the mother of Golden Sun and Xenogears.
this game is actually good.
For a 1996 game though it has some good sprites.
This was the first jrpg I had on the PS1. Loved it. My brother would watch me play. I think I spent at least 60 hrs on it to beat it. I recall having a terrible time memorizing the route in a temple.
Just found this disc for a buck at the thrift store. Not too shabs.
I had to pay 100$ for it :(
God, I have some memories of this one. Tossing it back and forth with my friend and getting angry at it lol.
I think this game is brilliant. And to this day I am still trying to find a working copy. Every copy I've tried in the last 4 years has been corrupted.
Playing right now with fpse for android :)
That was a nice review about an RPG that many missed out (and good thing they missed out because Beyond the Beyond was nothing special). Thanks Jonathan!

cant believe he didnt say how its in the same vein as golden sun. made by the same people, and same company. it's basically golden sun for ps1 lol
I loved it. It was the first games I ever played on the ps1 when I was in preschool. This is how I started to love jrpgs. I used to live in tokyo japan so when moving to california when I was four years old I just played this game a lot. Way too much. This and Rayman. I love this game. This was my intro to jrpgs.
This felt like an 80 hour game when i tried playing it initially. I don't think i ever finished it

This game along with others like Shining Force and Golden Son were all made by Camelot Softwere, so they do have some similarities, they all seem intentional as well.
I picked this game up at my local pawn shop way back in the PS2 days. I couldn't get into it, but maybe I'll give it another shot.

+TXF Try Grandia. Trust.
can't say it any better man..! the best that they had here in CGRundertow is Jen.
review Wild Arms!
The makers of shining force in there , Camelot
stablehorse123 Dude, I can't believe I didn't catch that. Lol I remember, when I played it, how much it reminded me of Shining Force.
Unlike this game, however, Shining Force was excellent.
GamingVidsAreAwesome Then they made Golden Sun.
This was actually a really good review, CGRUndertow's review have gone downhill as of late with reviews usually not talking about everything the game offers and instead going off on some random tangent. This was too the point and quite entertaining. I actually want to play the game now.
woooooow amazing classic for the unforgettable psx
the battles graphics are amazing!!!

+sabata Oh yeah,Suikoden! I forgot about Suikoden!
+DoctorLuvdraw Did you ever try the game Thousand Arms? Aside from the extremely boring OST, it was a pretty good game
1:36 -It hurts your thumb after a while.- Nostrodomus was rite all along
BEYOND! Haha its an ign podcast reference. Not sure if anyone gets it.

I love you Jonathan!! And we have the same name!! JONATHANS UNITE
it's an early ps1 title. what do you expect?
вєηנαмιℓℓιση So was Wild Arms and Suikoden.
looks ok for a ps1 game... did you really think i meant compared to now?
this reviewer is quite good he does his job well.. which is.. reviewing the game...! hated this game the random battles was way insane
I'll stick with Golden Sun
Why do people hate this game? Looks good to me!
try comparing this video review to TJ's Blue Dragon review.. you can see what i mean.. that long haired hippie is boring..
this reviewer has a soothing tone but annoys me anyways
Aww, but I really tried back then!
This game gave me seizures
Never finished
graphics look ok
Olalu..!!!
looks a bit lame. to think FF7 came on the same PS1 console.

This game was so bad. Kinda bad like Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Battle 22
Keep this reviewer., get rid of all the other Undertow clowns.
This game is garbage.
