  • The first episode of the Golden Sun series and it's... Not a Golden Sun game. Beyond the Beyond is basically Golden Sun 0.5, and features much of the design of the GBA RPG. Pretty neat stuff my boy.

    RUclips knows I like Golden Sun so much that any video with that in the title is recommended to me, which I greatly appreciate.
    Great video! I tried to play this game once upon a time and I didn't get far. Hope you enjoy GS; personally I prefer the Lost Age due to the more open world and better difficulty. Definitely a sub from me.

      I'll just have to put "Golden Sun" in every video title from now on, destroying any good faith we have between us.
      It seems that a lot of people (more than I thought anyway) have tried Beyond the Beyond, and largely have the same opinions.
      Thanks for the comment!

    This is one of my favorite games. Love that it's from the same folks behind Landstalker, Shining Force, Beyond The Beyond, Golden Sun...it's all got these funky similarities. I believe one of the shoulder buttons also performs commands like Talk and Search in addition to Triangle, too. It's what I did most of the time? Been a few months since I finished this again.
    The active play system stuff is....wild, but if you hear an actual chime, it means you did something, rather than it triggering by chance. Even strategy guides and the manual for the game say there's different buttons to hit for different times, but Triangle and X are the only ones I've gotten consistent effects from, but it's so good when someone is near death, you block, or even better, they loose all their VP but do the instant recovery thing. Felt like you were pushing them to get back up immediately. Glad you bring up the best bug in the game with the items just cuts magic damage by half for what you think is only 1 battle, but it's permanent on the character you use it on for the rest of the game. Wild.
    The light orb thing is even worse if you don't find the extra 3 party members..... Tont is hard to miss, Lorele is very easy to miss....and well....
    .....it looks like you killed Percy.
    I love this game but you're absolutely right. It's a product of its time in a way that hasn't aged super well or learned from its peers. It's interesting to see how the Shining series creators made such expressive and light hearted games, created the PS1s first RPG, but also made it much much more melancholy than anything they made before on the Genesis. Good shit. Looking forward to your Golden Sun videos!

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  6 лет назад +2

      The shoulder button would've been much, much nicer. I think I did try all the buttons, but face buttons for interaction is so deeply ingrained, it's hard to stop.
      I didn't kill Percy though! The game fed me quite enough cues to know that something was up, specifically when he saved the party and then argued with himself. I kept defending because he was doing minuscule damage anyway, and ended up with Percy back. Unfortunately, he wasn't as strong as Samson, and had entry-level magic, so I used him a little bit and sent him to a random city, but a neat little addition regardless.

    "Beyond the Beyond" is one of those titles that turns into complete word salad after you've heard it repeated a couple of times. The word "beyond" stops feeling like actual English and becomes some kind of bizarre onomatopoeia.
    It's not quite as baffling as "Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3", "Bravely Second: End Layer", or the completely bonkers "Gun Force: Battle Fire Engulfed Terror Island", but it definitely reminds me of those weird Japanese t-shirts with adorable Engrish printed on them.

    I really enjoy this game, I got a copy of it around 1997ish, I had just finished FFVII and wanted something a little more akin to Dragon Quest and this didn't disappoint (Me). It's hard as nails, and I think the lack of bosses is probably a result of the frequency of encounters. If you notice, each boss has a totally unrealistic VP count that makes it take 10+ minutes and don't get me started on the amount of Mage's Potions you might blow through! It has a nice soundtrack though, the pixel art is fantastic and it really gave me an enjoyable, even if frustrating at times, experience!

      Casp I enjoyed the towns, the music, even the dungeons in the first half. I thought it was quite atmospheric. It's nothing special, no, but it was still enjoyable to me. I liked for instance the cave with the sleeping dragon and the giant tree. However, once you start on your way to Bandore, everything becomes very bland and it's just battle after battle. It's sad because I really liked both Shining Force and Golden Sun. GS has some huge gaping plot holes that bother me, but the gameplay is very solid.

    One of the harder RPG's I've played, have owned a copy since it first came out. I was near the end, took a long break, finally looked online many years after at an FAQ to find the last tablet near the end (it was on a small island I never saw in past playthroughs), opened the last area, and finally beat the game. It's not a bad RPG, from the people behind Shining Force, sure the graphics won't push the PS1 to it's limits, but the pixel art is beautiful.

    I remember owning Beyond the Beyond. I played for all of an hour, but the graphics drove me crazy. Don't get me wrong: I love 2D RPGs, but the sprites were so poorly animated: every single emotion was represented with the sprite growing and shrinking in size. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT EMOTION THAT IS!!! I don't think I even made it far enough to see the "cool" battle graphics, and I was shocked years later when I found out the price of the game skyrocketed long after I lost track of my copy. And for the record, I also love random encounters. P.S.: Oops, the video talked about the random shrinking. Guess I got ahead of myself. "If it doesn't gradually ramp up to fighting god in a space-time vortex, is it even a JRPG?" This is now one of my favorite quotations.

      Golden Sun kinda does the shrinky-bobby-sprite-shit, but it seems a bit more controlled. It's still neat, but would've been better if it happened as the text was moving, and accompanied different faces, as opposed to a flat face, and independently occurring. It is what it is!

      Nah, I stopped before I got there. I know my friend keeps telling me it gets better at that point, but I mean if you make a game with 70 levels and only the last 20 are fun, what's the point?

    • @Nesaru
      @Nesaru 6 лет назад

      Well 1-50 is pretty much a tutorial and thankfully, SE made levelling from 1-50 much faster than it was back in 2013 (level cap was 50 and the story was typical anime garbage that even had filler! Extreme Primals and Binding Coils of Bahamut were fun, though. Binding Coils was pretty much the best story in the ARR days). 50-70 is pretty much getting a feel for your Jobs rotation; what you can do and what works the best for you (though look up a guide so you know you're not doing something horribly wrong).
      At the moment, God Kefka is the final boss of the Interdimensional Rift (Savage) raid.

    • @FraterOculus
      @FraterOculus 6 лет назад

      I just find it really odd that you've got fifty levels of filler, that to me is strange! The game itself is smooth, I just don't like the setting as much. I'm sure it's probably the best MMO out right now, but I dunno why they can't make another one like EverQuest. That was so, so great, it was just the greatest.

  • @cwjalexx
    @cwjalexx 5 лет назад +1

    a few years ago I spent some time trying to figure out the secret to the "interactive combat" and came to the conclusion that the input requirements is random and changes constantly. on emulator i made a savestate right before an attack and during that savestate I got something like "left down right X" to always perform a certain special attack but it only worked at that specific time. for a game that had an insanely high encounter rate to not have the special attacks be repeatable doesn't make a lot of sense to me...the best luck I had in repeating special attacks was mashing both the d-pad and the face buttons.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  5 лет назад +1

      Yeah, that's definitely not a great mechanic. I think I said it in the video, but from whatever info I could find on the internet, most people recommended just mashing the face buttons. I found it worked more frequently just with X but that could totally be a Pokemon-esque thing where your mates are you "HOLD DOWN AND B TO INCREASE THE CAPTURE RATE!"
      So many criticals triggered without me realising there was an active interfacing system, so I would love a system that breaks it down and figures out how it ticks. After playing shish like Legend of Dragoon, it seems like a wasted opportunity to make a stand-out game experience, but here we are nearly 25 years later.

    Beyond the Beyond was my first RPG that I actually understood what was going on. Granted I was 5 when I played it, but my mom loved it and beat it many times. I used her as a strategy guide for 3/4ths of the game and eventually beat it. Took me over a year to do as a kid because I would get frustrated, load up SMB3 and play that instead. I was also trying to play FF1 at the time too because I liked the way RPGs played. I gave this game another go during the pandemic and was surprised to see that it stands up as a classic but if you're looking for something with an unfair challenge type of classic.

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  Год назад

      It's only really unfair in the final dungeon, everything up to that point is achievable. I can't even remember what I said about it, but I do remember being a little harsh. There're certain parts where I definitely get quitting to play SMB3 though, I love RPGs, but I would happily quit like half of them to fuck around in Mario.

    • @redmageviewer
      @redmageviewer Год назад

      The two dungeons I hated were the Shrine of Discipline, before you class change, and the optional ice cave. I do say unfair because the random encounter rate is so high and sometimes you can run into a group of monsters that just roughs you up too much and just have to go back to town most of the time.

    I'm late but heres a nice tip in regards to reducing magic damage from enemies. Find and use Resist Jewels, one use on each character. One use will cut enemy magic damage in half PERMANENTLY. I learned it from a guide years ago and it helped a lot. Some can be found but I think Resist Jewels can be bought from the Secret Merchant hidden in Barbaros after it gets destroyed.

    I agree about the Bosses, while I don't think the game would've been better if it was completely laden with them, but I think a few more would've helped; those two Twin Trees you climb and descend while fleeing from Marion Kingdom after Samson is cursed is one such place; the second tree is full of massive spider webs and the last floor is completely empty, no chests, no pots; just an empty space full of webs, my point; I was expecting to have to fight a large Arachnid type foe there and didn't. I think the Volcano should've had more than a mandatory strong Mooks battle too, same with Marion Castle when you retake it; the Evil Summoner/Ogres battle in the tower where Ramue puts that mask on [Name Remove due to Spoilers] should've been a fight against Ramue in my opinion or even just an actual boss.

    My greatest problem with the series (since golden Sun also have it) is that the puzzle dungeons random encounters was solved already by Lufia 2 having visible encounters. Also funny how you didn't mention the WALLS OF TEXT and how characters don't know how to shut up, that's a hug game breaker or me.

      Lufia 2 is a good boy though. I gotta get on that series at some point, because it has like 2 or 3 spin-offs I never played, but severely want to.

      Shining Force laid down the foundation, but Shining Force II has a much better plot and a larger cast of characters. The fighting system was improved as well, with your characters sometimes getting a second strike when attacking or dodging and getting a counter. It’s pretty in-depth with the promotion system. It was the Suikoden II of the Genesis/Mega Drive.

    I am one of those who got this game just because I had a PSX and needed an RPG before FF7 was released.
    I still can't believe I finished this thing. It is BRUTAL in its random encounters. Most of the fights are not all that fun, and without bosses that is all you have. The dungeons he mentions as being a pain in the ass are understated. The internet wasn't quite in its stride yet, so you were doing a lot of this shit on your own or not at all.
    I think some dungeons were flat out only possible by save spamming (I am pretty sure you could save anywhere in it, from what I recall) and hoping you ran away from a fight the first time, if not reloading and trying again until you got out of the dungeon.
    Well, I remember the music being ok at least.
    I blame this game on why I never was able to get in to golden sun.

      I won't argue on the grinding part. But aren't all Jrpg games somewhat of a grind? :P Besides at least with the gba version you get a backstory for each character (if you actually care that is) which is a lot better than just having a bunch of stat meatheads in the barracks. It is a bit of a nostalgia thing for me, but since Shining force 1 and 2 and Phantasy star 2-4 were the ones that got me into Jrpgs, I think it was a pretty good starting point.

    My brother and I were huge Shining Force fans and were super pumped to get this on PS1 at the time. It really is EXACTLY the Shining Force aesthetic template translated to traditional RPG. While this team are ace at strategy RPGs, I think their dungeon design (which they didn't really have to do in Shining Force) was weak. The random encounters were WAY too much. We were a bit dissapointed in the non-battle graphics too - as they were barely above what they did for Shining Force on the Genesis. We couldn't finish this game, but when Suikoden came out, we ate that up.

    I Consider Beyond The Beyond in the top 10 RPGs of all time even still to this day. I first beat it in the fall of 1998 JUST before Pokemon Red and Blue released in the USA and I have since restarted and beaten it around 20 or 25 additional times. I LOVE your Breath of Fire 3 and 4, legend of dragoon, and Golden Sun references, HOWEVER, while Beyond The Beyond WAS the first RPG released ON THE PLAY STATION, there are a number of others that precede it such as Breath of Fire released on the SNES in 1994 and Breath of Fire 2 which released on the SNES in 1995. Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest, the Legend of Zelda, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings Vol. 1 ALL precede Beyond the Beyond on Nintendo's Platforms as well as many others. The "X button mashing" DOES INDEED work but I only use it when my characters are recovering from the "groggy" status condition (When character is orange after VP hits Zero). The original Phantasy Star and J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings Vol. 1 ARE FAR AND ABOVE more difficult than games like Beyond the Beyond. Even Mega Man and Final Fantasy predate and ARE more difficult than this game. Tip for anyone playing Beyond the Beyond: MAKE SURE you have Finn (Protagonist's default name fyi) at or above level 42 BEFORE you attempt the Isle of Discipleine Labyrinth Dungeon to class change because EVERY CHARACTER after level 41 will have their "level up stat increases" stunted and almost or completely non-existent upon leve-up. Also, 12 or so turns defending and healing yourself in the "boss" battle against "The Black Knight" WITHOUT killing him and he will run away and near the end of the game, Percy, aka Annie's Brother, will rejoin your party. I have played and beaten 100's of JRPGs and RPGs over my 27 years of playing Video Games some 100's or even 1000's of times and very few top the AWESOMENESS that is Beyond the Beyond!!!

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  6 лет назад +1

      There was no way I was getting to level 41 pre-class-shift. I think I was late 20s, and couldn't be buggered grinding since the game was fairly easy up until that point. The only boss I struggled with up until that point was the first one because I wasn't prepared. Interesting that the game allows you to get to level 41 without punishing you though, but there's no real room to move past the late-20s without intense grinding.
      I didn't actually kill the black knight either! A lot of people have commented that, but I attacked him a couple times then realised he was doing no damage, and the game heavily alludes to him being an ally, so I kept defending and got Percy back, although he's completely useless, it was still nice to have him!

    • @jdhoushour3041
      @jdhoushour3041 6 лет назад

      Casp I can't say I blame you for not grinding hard core to reach level 41 and I am one of few people that would grind continuously for at least 10-15 hours of gameplay EVERY time I play through this game and a hint if you didn't already know but if your character doesn't learn all of their magic BEFORE the class change it takes them the additional levels in their advanced to learn the basic class's magic they missed at first and then learn the magic of their advanced classes. However, the reverse is also true as in one of my playthroughs of it I leveled my party to the hi 70's and Annie and Edward both learned and knew all of the advanced class magic by level 2 of the advanced class. And I can say that I had a bit of trouble with the Water Demon in the Gaea Shrine but if you HAVE NOT used the moon Crescent in the port town of Luna to enjoy the night life yet you can save your game INSIDE Luna's church, reset the game, and as soon as you reload your file go to the vase collector and BUY a vase for a paltry 200 G for 1 of 4 vases that sell for NO LESS than 7500 G at Luna's shop OR can be used as a 1 time use of the magics Firedrake level 2, Titan Level 2, Undhine Level 2, or Tolle Level 2. This process can be repeated endlessly until you enter Luna at night but REMEMBER you MUST save, reset, and reload EVERY TIME from Luna's Church to "refresh" the vases that I mentioned and you can't purchase more than 1 each time! The Vase of Life IS STILL MORE VALUABLE than his "friend" though lol!

By that point, we already had two Breath of Fires, a Suikoden, Chrono Trigger, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy 4, 5, and 6, with 7 just on the horizon.
      None of these games are particularly well known for being super balanced or clean, but they did a much better job than Beyond the Beyond. I feel like they fine-tuned it for Golden Sun though.

      Definitely give them a try. Breath of Fire 3 has a PSP version, but the PS1 versions are also on PSN, so if you've got a PSP/Vita/whatever, it's very accessible!

      Motion sickness
      Synonyms Kinetosis, travel sickness, seasickness
      Specialty Neurology
      Motion sickness is a condition in which a disagreement exists between visually perceived movement and the vestibular system's sense of movement. Depending on the cause, it can also be referred to as seasickness, car sickness, simulation sickness or airsickness.[1]
      Dizziness, fatigue and nausea are the most common symptoms of motion sickness.[2] Sopite syndrome, in which a person feels fatigue or tiredness, is also associated with motion sickness. "Nausea" in Greek means seasickness (naus means ship).[3][4] If the motion causing nausea is not resolved, the sufferer will usually vomit. Vomiting often will not relieve the feeling of weakness and nausea, which means the person might continue to vomit until the cause of the nausea is treated.

    This is hilarious. I was *juuuuust* talking about this game to my coworker but I couldn't remember the name or enough about it to identify it. I saw your video and it instantly came back to me. I was specifically talking about how badly I sucked at that "missing tile" puzzle with that woman's face. I hate those kinds of puzzles with a passion and that one took me way longer than I care to admit to finish lmao Still love this game haha

    • @Caspicum
      @Caspicum  6 лет назад +1

      I love sliding tile puzzles, but they're worthless for a video game. Also, a lot of people have been saying they're just discovered Beyond or were just thinking about it before this video dropped. What odd timing I've got.

    Too bad the game has so many design quirks, but I really like it's style. I remember always seeing this to rent at my local store so long ago, but I never picked it up. I had a chance to buy it years later for like $8 (really should have done that...that's about what it should be worth. It's closer to $80+ now.) Camelot Software's _Shining Force III_ on the Sega Saturn's battle system design and overall aesthetic is almost verbatim _Golden Sun_ imo.

      @@Caspicum Lol, oh. Sorry dude, I thought perhaps you were being cynical because of your awesome sense of humor (it's all good, my bad.) Yeah there really was a _Shining Force III_ on Sega Saturn. As a matter of fact those bastards split it into 3 separate games, or "episodes." While emulating them is easiest, Sega Saturn emulation is still iffy, but you can buy repro's of all of them on Etsy for very reasonable prices ($20 for all 3.)
