      John L If the vehicle has never had a transmission fluid change in a long time and has a lot of miles, it’s recommended that the fluid not be changed because this can lead to potential SLIPPING of the transmission.

      Jackstands must be used on a hard surface - concrete is best. If you just can't manage that, use large pieces of ¾" plywood under each jackstand.
      6 ton rated jackstands should be used under cars and light trucks. Not so much for strength but for their wide footprint. They cost a little more but nowhere near as much as ambulance and emergency room charges.
      Try to find stands that have little flat feet welded to each leg so they don't damage asphalt.
      Stacking wheels with tires under the vehicle is an extra safety measure.

    You might want to also consider changing the filter as well. I think that is an excellent idea to go back over the fluid after 50-100 miles. Additionall, you can get a Bluetooth adapter for the OBD2/service port and one of many scan apps, such as torque or stand alone scan apps just for transmissions, so that you can more precisely monitor the transmission fluid temperature and mirror a dealer, fluid change.

    I contacted Castrol, they recommend doing a FULL flush. So that their fluid doesn't mix with any factory fluid. Like on my Civic it's about 8 qrts. So I simply did 2 drain and fills. I used the Castrol universal ATF/CVT fluid. What a difference that made. I swear it's better than the Honda stuff! It's a process, I did mine per the Honda factory repair manual. Waiting for the fans to come on with that tiny 1.5 T took forever. It was well worth it though.

    I work for a Nissan dealership. He did it wrong. Just drain the cvt fluid and be sure to remove that little self leveling tube as well to drain it faster. Be sure to use the right color fluid because it will void your warranty. Nissan use NS-2 ( green in color ) or NS-3 ( blue in color). When you have the fluid drained out, you can use a very small 1/4 inch wratch with a swivel head & a 10mm socket to remove the tube from on top of the cvt fluid pan ( be surenot to burn yourself ), it is right on top where the drain plug is. Be sure NOT to lose the rubber o-ring that is on it. After it all drained out. Put the drain plug with the self leveling tube as well & the tube back on and make sure that o-ring is on and tighten it back on the pan with the 10mm socket. Add 5 qts of cvt fluid, then start the car. Run it till the cvt gets hot then drain the cvt fluid again. Do not remove the self leveling tube at this time, just let it drain till it stops. Then put the drain plug back on and make sure the drain plug has a new crush ring. Then go back and put the cap back on the cvt tube. Nissan highly recommends to do a cvt service every 30k miles.

      Check the fluid for metallic specs or a burned smell. If it smells a bit burned that's fine. Get OEM transmission fluid from Nissan. Yes you can get NS-3 or NS-2 at an auto parts store (check your manual to see which transmission fluid you need) - but I recommend getting OEM. I used the auto parts store version in my video but that was my risk and it worked perfectly fine. Also, to get the most fluid out; Change the fluid like I did in the video, drive for about 150-300 miles, then do a second transmission fluid change, that way you get as much as the old fluid out.

      It is used to measure the correct level, correct. That being said, there is no need for the tube. Assuming you have no leaks, you can take some old fluid out, measure it, and replace the amount of fluid you took out. The tube becomes obsolete at this point.

      I think what he is saying is that the inner bolt with the Allen head on it under the external drain plug has a hole in the center which allows fluid to run out when filling so...theoretically you can't overfill the transmission. Simply fill the trans mission up, and when it starts to run out of the pan through the Allen head bolt you know you're filled to the correct level. Eliminating the need to use your oil dipstick to measure the level. That is the reason for the second drain plug.

    • @samhan7048
      @samhan7048 5 лет назад +1

      mike fredericks now that depends on how level your car is. Some people just jack up the front of their cars. Then there’s folks that jack up all four sides. However, they don’t take into account if the ground they’re working on is level. It can either be leaning to one side or higher up in the back or front.

      @@samhan7048
      Also, as I understand it, the temperature of the fluid is important. Yes refill with an amount of fluid equal to what you took out (perhaps a little extra) but don't remove the drain with the Allen wrench until after the fluid is at the correct temperature. At least that's my understanding but to be truthful, I don't have the confidence to do this job myself.

    Hey, I have a value tip for you all. If you put transmission fluid in your oil ,it is a clean and lubricanting fluid. And if you do an oil change and fill it with transmission fluid, then drive for and 30m to a hour it helps clean oil thick oil build up that happens from over time. Then empty the fluid out and put the new oil in and you can leave the new oil filter on . But remember you won't need the same amount of oil to fill cause there is fluid in the new filter from driving with the transmission fluid. Always check level when refilling. So, transmission fluid in oil is ok😃, oil mixed in transmission bad😫. This is old mechanic wisdom. Hope I have y'all value.

    Not bashing in anyway but all you did here was a drain and fill on the transmission but there is still is about another 5-6quarts in the trans (cooler lines, torque converter, etc..) that’s why they cost so much to service because the machine pushes fluid in while it sucks out and gets all the old fluid. Also OEM nissan NS-3 fluid is blue not red that’s aftermarket.

      On a side note it will be hard to get a transmission covered under warranty when the tech finds aftermarket fluid in the trans.

    • @UnrealOG137
      @UnrealOG137 5 лет назад

      Fluid flushes aren't good. They can reveal problems in the transmission. Also, only use oem fluid designed for that transmission. Nothing else. Using the wrong fluid will damage the transmission and then it won't be covered under warranty.

    • @bridgettecollins7121
      @bridgettecollins7121 5 лет назад

      Flushes are fine, given that the fluid is not black, burnt and has metal particles in it. It will get clogged. The reason it can reveal “problems” is again if your oil is black with metal particles in it, your gears are worn. This metal is just enough to help them grip. If you take that away it will slip easier. The problem still needs to be addressed but there’s not much you can do about that.

    Instead of wasting time messing around with sticking the oil dipstick into the trans that thing you removed with the allen key is called a standpipe and it measures the amount of oil. Take the car and make sure it is level with a bubble level and then start it up and run it through the gears and then remove the drain bolt. If the trans oil barely drips out and not a steady stream it is full if nothing comes out keep in mind with the standpipe still in then its low. If it flows clear and fast its overfilled. Many cvt and non cvt transmissions use this kind of measuring system vs a dipstick. The temp to check the trans needs to be about 104 degrees between 95 and 113 degrees during the check

      I looked through dozens of comments until I found this. This is by far the easiest (and correct) way to check the CVT fluid level. No need to use scales or jugs to try and reproduce fluid in vs fluid out. Simply remove the bolt but NOT the standpipe, and pour fluid in until it flows as this commenter described. No guesswork needed.

    2. If it's as easy as shown in this video then why won't some businesses change the fluid on cvt transmissions? Both Goodyear and a Express oil lube place told me that they didn't service cvt transmissions. So I'd have to go to a Nissan dealership to get my fluid changed.

    I'll recommend only Mega flush to change 100% off fluid. You need to change a filter as well. A conventional transmission service leaves about 60% of the old fluid still in the system in the torque converter and oil cooler, this can cause malfunction of the transmission or complete failure.

    Have a question. Have a 13 rogue with 192k on it. Started having some light hesitation on acceleration from a stop. Little jerks, maybe 2 to 3. Get up to speed fine. Way home from work last week had a very low whine at 70 on the turnpike. Took my exit and coming to a stop it jerked at below 10 coming to a stop. Accelerating it did the same thing, more jarring than the previous issue but after 10 to 15 mph it ran fine no issues. Possible causes? Bad valve body? Ordered one going to see if that helps. Speed sensor?

It only had one 10mm bolt. Took it out and refilled from there. Autozone had the Castrol on sale. $11 dollar for 2qts. Basically buy one get one free. Something I see everyone doing wrong is just replacing what you took out. That is not correct. These cars have a self leveling tube. Drain the oil. Remove the tube inside the drain plug (5mm allen). Fill with aprrox 4.5 qts of Nissan CVT or whatever oem oil for your car. Make sure car is level, run the car and pull the drain plug (but not the tube this time). The fluid will poor out of the pan. When the fluid has come to a slow drip it has leveled itself out. There is no "set amount or dipstick to check". The only proper way is for the car to self level. Put the cap back on and you have done it correctly. Car needs to be at 110*F before you perform this. Let warm up for 15 minutes or so. Make sure you replace the crush washer. The crush washer is the same size as the oil drain plug and can be purchased at any auto parts store.

    I have a 2012 Altima with 212,000 miles on it. I have *NEVER* changed the transmission fluid until now! Why now? The fluid is overheating, making the transmission go into fail-safe mode. The salesman at the dealership back in 2012 told me the CVT's don't need the fluid changed because it's a "sealed system". The car has been amazing, I can't lie. However, my new mechanic says I've been more than lucky and not expect much longer life from the transmission. He agreed to change to fluid for me because what harm could it do, right? I'm praying it works!

      Most of these modern CVT Transmissions have overflow plugs. After the temperature of the fluid has reached it's specified level, (make sure the vehicle is level, on jack stands, and a container is under the over flow) you can remove the overflow plug, and let it drain until it runs down to a minute drip.

  • @Giozlz
    @Giozlz 5 лет назад +4

    So it's to my understanding you can simply keep filling with transmission fluid as long as the drain plug has been removed?
    The excess transmission fluid will come out of the hex drain and therefore impossible to overfill?

    • @algrayson8965
      @algrayson8965 4 года назад +1

      ALL of the fluid that you pour in will drain out if you don't put the drain plug back in! None of that fluid will flow into the torque converter. Torque converters cannot be drained since the 1950s when some had drain plugs.
      Manual transmissions (used to) have level plugs on the side of the case. After draining and then reinstalling the drain plug, the case is filled, through the fill hole if it has one, or through the level hole with a flex tube and pump, until fluid runs back out of the hole. Then reinstall the fill and level plugs.
      Drain plugs should always get a new gasket/seal washer. 10 Minute Oil Change places most likely don't replace the gasket. You're lucky if they replace the drain plug without cross-threading or stripping the drain hole threads.
      Fill plugs, not so important as long as the gasket is in good condition.

    • @gan_the_white
      @gan_the_white 4 года назад +1

      You're correct Gio. That tube is an overflow tube, like in a toilet. Any fluid above the tube will spill into the pan. That is why you can safely run the engine with the drain plug removed. The fluid will NOT drain out when the tube is installed during service maintenance. I think the other person commenting was thinking of driving with the drain plug permanently removed. The service manual recommends drain and fill 3X.

    I bought a Nissan Rogue and its the first and dare I say will be the last car I ever own that has a CVT transmission. Most people never even bother with changing fluid in their transmission. You simply cant do that with a CVT. It wont last if you dont maintain it. Nissan wants about $22 a quart which is crazy. I changed mine with Nissan fluid at 30k and since then I switched to Amsoil CVT for my rogue. Its around $10 a quart. I think its as good or better but Im a fan of Amsoil so Im kinda biased. The dealer told me they do a pan drop only which is about 7 1/2 quarts. When I drain it I literally measure how much fluid comes out so I can put just that much back in. The dealer told me that those CVT transmissions really should have a pan drop every 30k in order to keep it in good shape. Otherwise it will fail. And yea they do charge $300 or so to just drop the fluid and replace it. They dont do a true complete flushing. Plus remember that Nissan and several other car companies get their CVT transmissions from a company called JATCO. They dont have a good reputation for making good CVT transmissions. Lots of problems.
