The 2000XL had 8 outputs and 2 MIDI outputs. The sound was also great. I still use the 500. It is basic, similar to the 3000 and the 60 in workflow. The 500 has the same amount of memory as the 2500 and can be expanded to the same max megabytes. I also have the 2000 XL and the 3000. Put it this way, give me the 500 over the Digitakt anyday
The MPC 2k could do a lot of what the XL could do because of the OS. I had an 2k and could time stretch and filter. The hardware is the biggest difference. But you could update the OS and have the same features as the 2K Xl
The biggest plus for the 2000XL was the folder management (as Ave stated) and for upgrade ability, the XL had an internal SCSI port to install a SCSI card reader, Zip or Jaz drive in the 2000XL. The 2000 only had the floppy or adding a db25 SCSI peripherals at the rear.
@@JUKE179r The XL also used the then brand new ATAPI IDE port which allowed hot swappable hard drives/cards without the hassle of SCSI. It's difficult to make that happen nowadays though because most things designed for that assume it's going to be used on Windows with Windows drivers. So they either straight up don't work on the XL or they only give you non hot swappable storage. The main benefit of the XL over the 2k is it boots the OS off internal memory instead of being useless without the OS floppy.
I agree with you on the 2000xl over the 2000...the 2000 was the first mpc I made beats on then I upgraded to a used mpc2000xl....hate I sold it but the outputs stopped working and the headphone jack only worked so I had to use that for audio!🤷🏾♂️
It is difficult to argue about matters of taste. My personal favorite is the MPC 1000 but currently I have a 500 in everyday use. As you said it's very basic but the portability and size make it pretty much the best tool for my use. I don't like the newer models you compared this to, so I can't find a better option for my own workflow.
As an experienced user of the 2000/xl, 60, and the 4000.... I've got to say that of the 3 the 4000 is by far the best. I don't think a lot of people used it fully. It's a monster.
MPC 1K all day!!! No frills or fillers, just dope beats….my first MPC and even though it doesn’t work anymore I still have it. Dope concept for the video btw.
The 1000 was awesome I literally sold both of mine because those pads were terrible when they first came out. It got better way after I sold them. The 2500 made use of that OS better but my only gripe with the 1000 was those dam pads. Otherwise it did a great job.
As a 5000 owner we just need to do some fact checking - the 5k doesn’t have jjos but Akai themselves updated it to version 2.0 which is considered much better. I’ve seen it described as a suped up 2500 and some people say it’s an upper tier MPC after the OS update. Peace.
I hate to be that guy but ive got a quick correction. Mpc 5000 does not have a jjos version. After just blaze took a dump on the 5000, Akai did an OS 2.0 which was hugely improved but never had jjos.
If the 2500 had side-chaining (mother ducker), I would still use it today! It's basically an MPC2000XL GT Twin Turbo. Tilt screen, much faster processor, quick time stretching, you can dial in the sound you want (onboard compressor/eq is pretty dope), and with JJOSXL, you can lazy chop, and install a much bigger screen. 17 years after it came out, the OS is still being updated. No other MPC (besides the 1000) has received so many software updates!
The 2k was a disappointment to early mpc heads because it was the follow up to the 3k. We were like “what is this frikkin toy? Akai was on the burn for about a year. Nobody (original heads) made a big deal about the XL because it was still a 2k. BUT!!! New heads made dope music with it. So the MP rebuilt their legacy with new beatmakers with the 2. While legendary BMs still worshipped the 3k. The 4k was a space ship and didn’t fly off the shelves (But I want one!) I want a XL too! I got a LE. Never messed with the rest BUT!!!! I respect them. And I respect that cats still love the MP. I worked at S.I.R. (Studio instrument rentals) on 25th st in NYC. (Ok so The Rolling Stones rehearsed and rented from them. Can’t get no bigger) I saw the MPC revolution happen in real time. The phone rings, a producer or his assistant, or his record company, requests the unit they want to rent. 3k dropped? Briiiinggg… Every other rental call… “y’all got a 3k available? 2k came out…. Brrriiiing “y’all got a 3k available?” Even more. Don’t get me started on names. Every multiplat in the game. Legend after legend. I’d love to enlighten you guys on all the people that HATED, DESPISED, LOST THEIR JOBS over the MPC. But that’s a real long story.
2k wasnt really a dissapointment, because if it flop we wouldnt have no XL no Akai probbaly. Many people didnt like that it saturated the sound a little, unlike 3000 which was a flagship mpc.
@@whatistau Eh? Akai is a million times bigger than the MPC, grab 50 musicians, every single one knows Akai, maybe 1 or 2 have heard of the MPC's, maybe one of them has seen an MPC in real life. Maybe. Zero have used an MPC most likely, to find one who has used it you'll need 500 or more musicians probably. I've been around musicians for more than half my life, I mean pros who live off music. Never heard of MPC's until a couple of months ago by chance, I was looking for an alternative to a DAW to sequence samples with that is better than a phone app. Akai is a staple brand, but basically second or third tier overall maybe, depends on what you do, pianists etc all know Akai from using their gear, but trumpetists etc maybe not beyond seeing it used by others, or tuning check tools.
@@noth606if you’ve never heard of an mpc up until a few months before you made this comment then that means you were never into the hip hop scene. Any musician or producer into hip hop from the late 80’s until now definitely knows what an mpc is
19:27 I freaking love the sound of the 2500 and the groove... I'll be keeping it. I dumped my MPC4000 as it was clunky in comparison... dumped the Z8 as well.
I think you are wrong about the MPC 2000 the 2000 had way better sound than the XL but the XL had the features. The 4000 was legendary it had the best sound sequencer and hardware along with the features.
I recently tried out an Mpc 2000xl for a few months, next to it was an mpc live2 The mpc 2000xl felt like it had a little more power. The drums were more powerful, but what I didn't like at all was the file system. I had a CF and SD drive and everything was still a hassle. The device was also slow as a snail. I think the 2000xl exudes charm, but it is no longer contemporary
the 5000 works with JJ ? When I had a 2500 with JJOS I remember that only the 1000 and 2500 worked with JJ. I think that info is wrong but if its true I want a 5000. JJ is the best OS for mpcs ever made.
The blue MPC1000 had shitty pad sheets on them while the “newer” black MPC1000 had a better pad sensor sheet for better response. Like Ave mentioned, the JJOS is a must for the 1000, 2500 & 5000.
Thats a misconception. The black mpcs also had the bad pad sensors, the ones that had the new style sensors were the black ones with the black back plate but even then it was a toss up

I like how you kept referring to the MPC 60II as a cash register 😂😂😂. A former roommate of mine has one and it was a beast! That same roomie gave me his 1000 about 8 years ago, and I just started using it earlier this year. Prior to that, I was making beats using the Su Preme MPA app for android, so that app was my training ground to transition to actual hardware. Also, is that a SNES cartridge of Zelda hanging on your wall?
the old ones are to limited to be everyday machines, but for that tone you cant beat it. i think the 4000 was the best all around machine. I miss my 4k i have the mpcx now
I've owned four 2Ks, 1XL, 5k over the years. The 2k USB will always be my heart, cause I knew it inside out and I started flipping USB versions with preloaded kits. I still haven't mastered the 5k.

The MPC Renaissance is not a current-generation MPC. I was hoping you put it in there. Also, you forgot to put a link in the description to Marlow Digs.

What’s with this tier list? How the hell can anyone put the 5000 in ‘sight’, let alone put the 2500 above it. The 5000 is clearly legendary, It has the highest spec of any MPC. Also as for song mode (5000 and 2500), it’s as simple as it gets… just chain sequences and then redub if needed, on top of that you can micromanage sequence events.
The XL all day, my very first Mpc. And i still rock with it.
2000xL is Legendary and KING! i said it!!!!!
MPC 2500 + JJOS all day lol 💯💯💯
I missed out on the 2500 twice at different secondhand stores that I buy from. I just take it that it wasn't to be. Same with the Roland MV8800
Yo! Can I just say, shoutout to you! The names you were dropping were not light by any means! That’s pretty cool.
Also, don’t be ashamed, but I’m considering swapping my 2500 for the 1000. lol true story. 😅
Kinda feels like I'm abusing my Push2 using drum kits sometimes.
I've come to a conclusion I need a mpc or machine.
Appreciate it
The 1000 was awesome I literally sold both of mine because those pads were terrible when they first came out.
MPC 4000 at 96K 😤
I regret selling my 2000XL! I've been trying to find another one
i still have the mpc 60II and a Zip drive and wont get rid of it.
I agree with your list order for the MPCs.
Whudd up Doc!
@@AveMcree just working on my craft my brother and checcing in to watch your informative videos.
Every model got a army
@@ChewoBeatssome more than others and for good reason when you see the pros against cons listed
My weapon of choice 2500 with JJOS
2500/1000 with JJos and 4K are beasts still till this day.
RUclips "sidechain compression jjosx2"
Sir, why do you have an image of a MPC5000 when talking about the 4k? 😂
I think cause people think there to close to the same
The 2k was a disappointment to early mpc heads because it was the follow up to the 3k.
The 4k was a space ship and didn’t fly off the shelves (But I want one!)
I want a XL too!
I got a LE.
Never messed with the rest BUT!!!!
I respect them.
And I respect that cats still love the MP.
I worked at S.I.R. (Studio instrument rentals) on 25th st in NYC. (Ok so The Rolling Stones rehearsed and rented from them. Can’t get no bigger)
I saw the MPC revolution happen in real time.
The phone rings, a producer or his assistant, or his record company, requests the unit they want to rent.
3k dropped? Briiiinggg… Every other rental call… “y’all got a 3k available?
2k came out…. Brrriiiing “y’all got a 3k available?”
Even more.
Don’t get me started on names.
Every multiplat in the game.
Legend after legend.
I’d love to enlighten you guys on all the people that HATED, DESPISED, LOST THEIR JOBS over the MPC.
But that’s a real long story.
Dope comment. Keep dropping historical gems, my boy. We gotta hear more from the people that was there.
@@noth606 yea, i ment their sampler divison not the audio recorders
@@noth606if you’ve never heard of an mpc up until a few months before you made this comment then that means you were never into the hip hop scene. Any musician or producer into hip hop from the late 80’s until now definitely knows what an mpc is
2000xl was my first after asr which was cool. But I just couldn't put it down it was easy to work with.

Do It!
The MPC5000 was first labeled as the MPC3500 by Nukai.
Sure wasnt
@@chrisjay3026it was. Alchemist owned one.
@@chrisjay3026Yes it was you can find a picture on google
19:27 I freaking love the sound of the 2500 and the groove... I'll be keeping it. I dumped my MPC4000 as it was clunky in comparison... dumped the Z8 as well.
Before all of that there was the Linn Drum by Roger Linn.
I saw one for 2600. I thought about it, but all I'm gonna do with it is make PRINCE beats! Lol!
Where would u place the new mpcs on this list?
I think you are wrong about the MPC 2000 the 2000 had way better sound than the XL but the XL had the features. The 4000 was legendary it had the best sound sequencer and hardware along with the features.
Yes I once owned the MPC 4000 plus. It sounded great. It was sluggish though.
I recently tried out an Mpc 2000xl for a few months, next to it was an mpc live2
The mpc 2000xl felt like it had a little more power.
JJ is the best OS for mpcs ever made.
i was kinda disapointed that none made the ass category though i was waiting that lol but very informative though good job Ave
The blue MPC1000 had shitty pad sheets on them while the “newer” black MPC1000 had a better pad sensor sheet for better response.
Like Ave mentioned, the JJOS is a must for the 1000, 2500 & 5000.
Thats a misconception. The black mpcs also had the bad pad sensors, the ones that had the new style sensors were the black ones with the black back plate but even then it was a toss up
Started on 2xl, 4K and 3k, touch the 1k and now with the X.
Terrible, that you ended up going to those newer low quality turds.
wait did I hear you correctly ?? I can pay for the jjos & get time stretch on the 2500
2k5 (great center midi piece even if with years i got me a few cool sequencers to play with) + S6k i'm good regarding sampling (on s6k you can set your bitz&rates). But lately i went for REGEN, i have to say, these units will be as usefull for a beat maker than a synth freak, aint no regret i didnt go for an X
lmao the 500 on top in the thumbnail
2000 xl here (since 15 years) with a zulu scsi card for better file management/storage.
i always wanted a mpc 60 but prices nowadays are ridicolous.
Great video. I learned a lot from this.
I bought my MPC 4000 brand new and I still have it. The hard drive crashed and needs to be replaced though. I have it connected via USB to my 1st generation intel Mac mini. Man, I'm getting old...
Mpc 2000xl Blue model is not stock fx & 8 outs it’s mcd card reader you’re failing 😅
True
Facts! But the blue one is awesome because of the CF. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about, Ski proved that.
the old ones are to limited to be everyday machines, but for that tone you cant beat it. i think the 4000 was the best all around machine. I miss my 4k i have the mpcx now
30 years later akai still trying to figure out what Roger Lynn did on the 3k
1000 all days cause its cheap, small, easy to use with JJ, and does everything.
I’m broke so I’ll stick to the vintage plugin on the new MPC to change to whatever old mpc sound
I've owned four 2Ks, 1XL, 5k over the years. The 2k USB will always be my heart, cause I knew it inside out and I started flipping USB versions with preloaded kits. I still haven't mastered the 5k.
2800 for a 60ll I sold mine for 1500 in 2020 that guy got a deal.
It sat on shelf for years i just bought the live 2 and now you got me regretting selling the 60ll just for looks in the studio.. I shouted you out ave cuz your the reason I got that live 2 ...I'm running it standalone and also with the software with maschine mk3 and komplete 14 ultimate as a vst .....best of both worlds
DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sad
@AveMcree you gotta do a vid cooking using the live 2 and the machine mk3 together inside mpc software ..I couldn't get kontakt 7 to run in mpc software but I open maschine in mpc software and the kontakt 7 in maschine
@@johnnieray2423 Ironically, you need Kontakt control or whatever it's called to use VST3 in the MPC Software.
@AveMcree most of them work with kontakt 6 just a few need kontakt 7 lol I just seen the fl studio video u post talking about mpc studio not supporting vst3 that is very crazy its been out for a long time how do these companies look over the simple things...some people are to smart for there own good lol...keep up the great work
The MPC Renaissance is not a current-generation MPC. I was hoping you put it in there. Also, you forgot to put a link in the description to Marlow Digs.
It’s a midi controller and one that people hated (and made Akai go back to the standard). It was called “ midi production controller “ just saying that disgust me.
I still want it though
@@AveMcree okay, but i love this Thing. 😊Reminds me a little of the mpc 3000 in terms of optics. and the blue display is reminiscent of the old mpcs Trying to familiarize old heads with the new world ( software)

Dope
You can't put JJOS on the 5000..... and brah piano roll came from Cubase ON THE ATARI ST back in 89/90
I loved the 2000. I understand why people prefer the XL. The 2000 had track mutes as well. Dunno what you mean by that. I found chopping easier on the 2000.
🤔even with all the information, I just couldn’t connect with the 2500🤷🏽, it’s still🔥though
Cool 😎 Bro. I like your List
MPC60 has basically no crunch to be honest. Clean as hell!
It can be crunchy and fat as well as clean. It depends on the sampling level. I sample vocals in the mpc for a clean to fat sound
I want a 60II so bad
Personaly il have the mpc 5000 and for me it's a great mpc i love it and i love the synth in it and and the 8 tracks recorder on this units !!! Peace from france bro !!!
😂
4000 reigns supreme……. But I’m having fun with this 60 lately
Sir nose in the white fuzzy suit!!! Got hit with the bop gun!!!! ❤️
No flakes on the 4k. Yours might have been on an older os 🫡 LEGENDARY
2000 classic was my first mpc also. I now have two of them. The 2000 also had three versions. The standard, the studio (8 outs) and the studio plus (8 outs and the fx board). It also had a visual wav editor like the XL and others that came after.
Great video, Ave! Just a reminder: could you put that Marlow Digs video either in the description OR pin a link in the comments?

The MPC 5000 is a underrated beast ...
Thank you! 🔥🔥
It's awful. Last time I saw one, it was on fire.
The 5000 became pretty good after all the updates
The MPC4000 does not have a synth engine. It sports the full fledged z8 sampler engine. It is legendary IMO.
What does it matters who used what model, it’s a tool :)
4000 screen is not fixed it’s tilt
Dont forget that the mpc 500 takes batteries. I don’t use mine cos I don’t like workflow but it does make it unique cos is portable.
good point
MPC 2500 for me followed closely by the 1000. JJOS of course
4k owner. No flakes here.
I love my MPC 4000 & 2000 xl
Yo I missed a 3000 for £50 😢
Still have my MPC 60 MK II
