    Bischoff used the same concept (invasion/inter promotional feud between two rival companies/factions) as NJPW vs. UWFI but that's where the similarities end. Not sure how that is stealing. However nWo was vastly different in presentation and execution to NJPW vs. UWFI plus did things that were ground breaking and revolutionary. The reality is NJPW copied WCW's nWo aka nWo japan. I could be wrong think NJPW may have even paid WCW for the rights to use the nWo trademark and sell merch. nWo got over huge in Japan also.

      It’s that at the end of the day there are no original ideas, it’s wrestling. It’s been around for over 100 years. Everyone borrows from each other, goes back and puts their spin on it.
      Not to make this an attack on Tony Khan but all his ideas aren’t exactly original either. The difference is he hasn’t figured out a way to put a spin on it that resonates with masses the way the NWO did. You just said it, the NWO didn’t just help raise the interest of the business in America but worldwide and across 2 companies. The idea of an invading company isn’t new and New Japan didn’t invent it either. For a man who proclaims himself a historian Dave should know that.

    • @markv1274
      @markv1274 3 месяца назад +1

      The bigger picture was that WCW versus the NWO was faction versus faction. That was hardly a new idea. The earliest example of this that I can find in wrestling was (wait for it) The People's Army versus Big Bad John's Army in the Australian version of World Championship Wrestling (the feud taking place in the early '70s).
      Guess who was the head of that promotion?
      Mah boy, mah boy! The promoter was Jim Barnett.
      Now guess where Barnett was working in 1996?
      Mah boy, mah boy! Barnett was working for the American version of World Championship Wrestling.
      When I say faction versus faction, I don't just mean a faction of three or four against another faction of three or four. The People's Army versus Big Bad John's Army was almost like the promotion had been split in two.
      A lot of folks take credit for the WCW vs NWO angle, yet I never heard Barnett speak about it. For all we know, Barnett could've casually mentioned the idea to someone else in WCW, and others ran with it.

      @ShadowAngel-lt8nw 3 месяца назад

      And how is that not a fact? He ran WCW into the ground, a promotion backed by a billionaire, owned by a TV Business and yet, what did Bischoff accomplish? 9 million lost in 1995, 9,7 million lost in 1999, nearly 64 million dollars lost in 2000 and despite live TV, PPV, Hogan and tons of other big names, out of 6 years running the promotion he had success for barely 1 1/2 years, in between, what were his ideas? Battlebowl? One of the lowest drawing PPVs ever? Kiss and the stupid demon? Making the karate teacher of his son a wrestler? Ripping off Mortal Kombat, when that franchise was dead and buried?
      Then he did the Ringrats stuff and it doesn't even start because he screwed up.
      Then he went to TNA and once he, Russo and Hogan took over, the ratings crashed and crumbled until Impact drew a record low of 0.5

      @@theconductor20 Stop reading Death of WCW and arrive in the real world.
      1. Yes, the sale of WCW was orchestrated by Brad Siegel (Time Warner, not AOL) and Sty Snyder (Turner) in a basically illegal inside deal, we know that since Bob Ryder's interview in 2001.
      BUT
      2. doesn't change the fact that:
      - Bischoff had everything on a gold plate, not even a siler platter, a gold plate. He got live TV because Ted said so. He got Hogan. He got Savage. He got Nash. He got Hall. He gave ridiculous contracts to everybody, because he had no business sense (and never forget the insane story of Fake Diese and Razor leading to Hall and Nash getting more money because Bischoff was so dumb to believe they jumped ship - despite valid contracts)
      - He wasted money on the most idiotic, absurd, retarded things that ever happened in wrestling. Road Wild. PPV on a Beach, Kiss, Megadeth, Glacier and his stupid expensive entrance. The guy had, again, no business sense whatsoever. He doesn't know how to control finances. He said so himself, he constantly shifted finances from one year to another, he said so on the podcast. We're talking about somebody who doesn't even know what EBITDA is!
      - he fired all the future superstars, that has been talked to death
      - he insisted on driving the one idea that worked into the ground, because had nothing else to offer. creatively he was as bankrupt as he was financially in 1992 and 2017.
      It's amazing how Meltzer, and the WWE narrative turned Bischoff from what he was: Ultimately a failure with 5 minutes of success, into this "god", the whole "he nearly drove the WWF into bankruptcy" claim is just absurd. The WWF was still doing bigger numbers attendance wise and unlike Eric, Vince understood how important foreign markets were. While Eric won the ratings war of 1 show, the WWF was operating worldwide, making a ton of money in Camada. Europe, India and other places.

    In all fairness here, Meltzer is referring to the storyline in NJPW of the young blood against the old guard which Bischoff has stated numerous times that was his inspiration for the nWo.
    Whether he "stole" the idea or did like every creative person does which is take elements from things you perceive in life and mix them up with ideas from your imagination to amalgamate them into a solid concept is kind of splitting hairs. Every thing you see creatively was _inspired_ by something that has already happened. The nWo wasn't a "copy" of the NJPW angle anymore than D-Generation X was a "copy" of the nWo. They all shared a common theme which was "upset the established order," but had very different paths to get there.
    Ironically, D-Generation X was the only one that succeeded as they run WWE now. 🤣

      Here's a question: how else do you acquire a job with a company? You talk your way into it. Isn't that how it's done? The squeaky wheel gets the oil.
      (Or you can just nail your employer's daughter.)
      Face it: wrestling is a business full of carnies, hucksters, con men and charlatans. You're expecting Eric Bischoff to ask for a position in the same way that a Girl Scout sells cookies?
      I've said it elsewhere: Eric is full of crap, yet he knew what industry he was in. He knew that he had to be loud and persistent to obtain the position he wanted. If that meant he had to spread some bull manure, so be it.
      A *lot* of people use varying degrees of horse dung in their job interviews. It's not as if Eric Bischoff just walked off the street and became the Executive Vice President of Operations. He was *working* for WCW at the time. Additionally, he'd worked for the AWA.
      The world is *teeming* with people who are dreadfully unqualified for their positions. If Bischoff wasn't qualified for his post, well, he was hardly the first person in history to fit that description.

    Per wikipedia
    The nWo storyline was an idea created by WCW Executive Vice President Eric Bischoff, whose inspiration for the angle came after attending New Japan Pro-Wrestling's Battle Formation show at the Tokyo Dome on April 29, 1996.[citation needed] The show was headlined by a NJPW vs. UWFi match for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, as New Japan's Shinya Hashimoto defeated UWFi's Nobuhiko Takada. Bischoff wanted to do an invasion-type angle where World Championship Wrestling (WCW) was being sabotaged by another wrestling group, initially insinuated as being the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), since the nWo's founding members had previously wrestled for the company.
    I would argue Dave was someright right, although I wouldn't call it "stealing", more like getting the idea from New Japan and putting his own spin on it

    That's ridiculous to say Eric stole the idea for the nWo from Japan. The idea is something a ten year old could come up with. It's so basic and obvious. And that's not an insult to Eric. I say that because he made the right moves, hiring the right people at the right time and this organically grown angle came about. It was the obvious thing to do. He didn't need to steal ideas from Japan. His implementation is the difference. There's a reason people still talk about the nWo all of these years later but no one even knows the name of the faction in Japan he supposedly stole the idea from.

    the UWF invasion never seemed like much to copy. I think some people still hear that Bischoff stole the idea from NJPW, then show pictures of nWo Japan, that happened after the nWo started in WCW because even they're mistaken on the topic.
    it might have taken a cue or inspiration, but there was nothing to build off of besides "wrestlers invade other promotion". nWo was only the guise of an invasion anyway. WWF and WCW werent working together. Id say how it played out was more uniquely clever than the UWF invasion and NJPW ended up profiting off of it 2 fold because they inherited the branding and talent trading from WCW, helping them as well and growing their audeince from the America side.
