Just curious if someone can talk a little about the overall use of these types of samples in terms of them not being "cleared". I get that everyone enjoys sampling from records for fun, but in the end you can't use these beats commercially or to make money correct?
I’m a longtime Maschine user. Been contemplating a standalone beat machine for years. What you think about the SP? Is it easy to pitch and time stretch samples? Doing it on Maschine is stupid af and Native Instruments should’ve fixed it years ago.
I think pitch shift / time stretch is pretty easy to do on the MK2, I like being able to grab samples from different places n make them fit. Never used Maschine so I dunno if it’s better, how does it do it?
BUG ISSUE: I’ve seen a few times on Reddit so not isolated to just me. It’s a rather big bug but probably not notice because a lot of users aren’t using the export project/import project function that much - so it’s going under the radar. If you export a project then you try to import it into a pad slot it doesn’t work...sometimes. And sometimes it does work... and sometimes it doesn’t but it’ll work if you try a different slot. The issue has a second tier - When it doesn’t work it still creates a space on the pad you imported to. When you go to “delete project” and try to delete it it doesn’t delete...kinda...It does delete the information but it doesn’t delete the light indicator until you power off on the unit and delete project again...sometime. Lol So basically it works but it’s not stable.
This is like something big pun would’ve tapped over, great video. I want to buy an SP404 MK2 so trying to learn as much as possible. Can I make beats exclusively off sampling records or do I need software?
Thanks heaps, appreciate it! MK2 is stand alone, no software needed so if you’re looking for that experience of sampling 100% everything from vinyl and not having to involve your laptop at all it’s def a contender.

Hey man, I felt like it kept the pace of the video moving more interesting, wanted to focus on using pitch & fx to get the samples to fit together. Always a balancing act to offer something up for the new viewers vs the returning viewers who’ve seen me sample & chop many times, some rudimentary steps they don’t need to see me do over n over again or have to skip past when I feel like the real juicy part is the manipulation of the sounds…more or less. If you have any questions about how I recorded the samples I’m more than happy to break it down.
@@Nonjuror yeah I was asking because I just received mine Thursday morning central time and was trying to record but I figured it out now I need to know how you can change the midi channels as in having an external sequencer control the sp404mkii?

Regarding midi, that I don’t know too much about sorry, I’ve gotten the MK2 to control my MPC60ii but haven’t tried the other way round yet or from a DAW. Must be a way tho.

@@Nonjuror was hoping they could make the reverse function like 303 + 202. That should be really easy to do and makes a huge difference for stretching out samples on the fly

I have a question about sampling. Here you are sampling from different vinyl records , even if all this music is in the same key, but the chord progression is different, how can all these semelas be adjusted so that they all sound harmoniously? 🤔
I usually try to chop out just the parts of the chord progression that work - if it’s in Am but the chord progression of one of them is Am G C E, I might not use the stuff when its C…I dunno, it’s tricky to force different chord progression together. Another approach might be to filter them differently, have one layer more lows / less highs and the other more highs or just the the mids with Isolator, they may clash less then.
@@Nonjuror Thank you for the detailed answer. You helped me understand some of the nuances of sampling. And is it possible using warp and pitch to adjust some of the necessary chords to the key? Thank you again for your reply. I'm just a beginner and I'm waiting for the delivery of my first ever AKAI mpc. I'm trying to understand the principles of sampling. After all , if you move the chord with a pitch , the intervals will remain the same as they were , for example , for a major chord 1+4+3 half tone, for minor 1+4+3 the halftone intervals will be in triad. Theoretically, for example, it is possible to make any minor chord from Am using pitch. Isn't that right? And build a completely different progression from them than in the original sample .
Definitely you can get close with time stretch and pitch, it’s usually tricky but not impossible. I usually have one of the samples are the more important one(say a jazz piano type thing) and the other is an additional thing which I will alter the most to make it for the key/bpm.
This vid was was the turntable connected directly into the mk2’s line in. If sampling from my laptop I do it via USB. I often also sample with the sp202 first to get that low sample rate sound first then bounce that to the mk2.
Thanks man! 99% of the time I mix in the box these days unless someone's paying me for track-outs in which case I use Pattern Chain & Mute Bus to methodically record them into my daw...it's a little easier than it used to be on the older 404s.
Nope, first time! Yeah, easily. When you connect the mk2 to your computer or ipad or whatever it can be selected as the audio interface for that device, this then means it’s receiving the audio from anything (youtube, netflix…etc) directly.
Thanks a lot man! It’s kinda good for my brain, if I don’t film n have an upload deadline I’ll tinker n tweak forever n that shit ain’t healthy. Especially recording patterns under the camera, it’s almost like that performing live feeling n once it’s done you gotta be cool with it.

What’s your process of recording the samples into your MK2? I’ve been struggling
This vid was was the turntable connected directly into the mk2’s line in. If sampling from my laptop I do it via USB.
I often also sample with the sp202 first to get that low sample rate sound first then bounce that to the mk2.
@@Nonjuror yo thank you! For the longest I’ve been trying to sample through the usb-c port but nothing ever came out. Thanks for the help 🙏🏽
🔥💯🙌
Cheeeers! 🍺🍺🍺🍺
This is awesome! question tho, how to you approach the mixing stage later on since you can't really export separate stems?
Thanks man! 99% of the time I mix in the box these days unless someone's paying me for track-outs in which case I use Pattern Chain & Mute Bus to methodically record them into my daw...it's a little easier than it used to be on the older 404s.
@@Nonjuror Oh cool. I was wondering about this too. Inspirational beat mate thanks. I've made up my mind about the Sp404mk2 thanks 👍 subbed
Apologies if this questions was already asked. But can you record from like a RUclips video directly to the 404?
Fire beat btw
Nope, first time! Yeah, easily. When you connect the mk2 to your computer or ipad or whatever it can be selected as the audio interface for that device, this then means it’s receiving the audio from anything (youtube, netflix…etc) directly.
@@Nonjuror That's so sick!
Hello....Where can I buy it?In Italy we have to wait about 10/13 weeks....Thanks....
Dunno sorry, I know this delay in Europe is torture
Did you plug the sp into the record player ?
Yep, directly
Good shit bro 🔥🔥🔥🔥. Man I wish I can breakdown my beat process in this way. So tough to do since most of what I make changes direction in the end XD
@@Nonjuror Damn that must be super difficult but it is productive. You don't do that all of the time with all your beats though right? I'm sure there are those beats where you gotta go ham on
Haha yeh, since I got the mpc60ii back up n running I’ve been going down to ham town on that for suuuure. About to figure out how midi it up to the mk2 which’ll be a whole new rabbit hole…
@@Nonjuror Oh man I can't wait to hear what you cook up with that combo. Cheers home Happy Friday!
