Hello Ryan, shortcut for deleting pads from the sequence: hold pattern edit and del button at the same time, select the pads you want to delete and push enter, big time saver you don't have to wait 8 bars. Love your vids !
As a multi-instrumentalist ( guitar , bass, synth, sampler ) and someone who respects music composition, KUDOS / Thanks for giving proper credit to the original artists when you do these tutorials.........Youre the ONLY person I've seen do this in years. 👍🏽❗ Respect for appreciating the original artists.
Been looking for vids about how to make beats in this style and was about to give up until I stumbled upon this - great vid and thanks for the inspo! 🙏❤
This video was just the thing I needed! I've been looking into buying the SP-404 MK2 for a hot minute now, but I felt like I was jumping into unknown lands due to all of the shortcuts and the workflow being a bit different compared to other machines. Luckily, there are videos like this that make it clear how to do a thing and what you're doing with the thing. Now I'm 100% certain I'll be buying this thing :)
Did you end up getting one? These talented/technical guys always make it look easy. Once you try it out yourself, you will have question marks pop up over your head. 😂
@@iShredStreets Yes I did get one! But the thing they say about the learning curve is true. It's quite challenging to remember every shortcut and how to activate a certain action. But it comes naturally after some time
@@TheMusicWarioAh, nice to hear! I had an SP404SX but I didn't have the patience at the time and I oversaw some things. I've been checking out videos of the MK II and it seems like the problems I had, are solved with this one. Thank you for your reply!
Hoping to see more SP404 MK2 videos! Got one awhile ago, but sample based production is so new to me that my SP404 has become an effects unit for my Syntakt and Digitone. Been drawn back to trying to do more sample stuff, but sadly very few people do full beats/tutorials with the SP404, so thanks for this video showing the full process.
Nice vids man! When you chop a sample you can also press remain (with v.2.0 on) and it will chop it exactly at the closest 0 crossing so you don´t hear the blip :)
i discovered kimiko kasai because of this video. so, i did what any normal person would do: went to japan to dig through crates of vintage vinyl. found this exact album in perfect condition and i love it!
Also ,...Dude you've chopped up Weather Report for you intro music 😲😜.....Outstanding,...I've never heard that. You've got a pretty good ear for a young guy. Wayne Shorter's sax over Zawinul's keys were so distinctive.
I can make 4 bar phrases or ideas pretty well but struggle with turning that idea into a longer piece that isn't just the same thing over and over. For a future video could you go over turning those shorter loops into a stronger and more diverse song?
Your facial hair has this magical quality of never seeming to change very much, and yet always being just a little different the next time you see it. Amazing and inspirational channel. Even though I can only directly apply the knowledge from your videos on the akai mpc, I really enjoy watching you work with gear that I'm not familiar with. The SP404 seems like something nice to have in addition to the mpc. The different workflow automatically inspires different ideas and approaches, plus it looks like a much lighter and portable toy to bring along for those long journeys where I end up with the free time to lose my head.
Thank you, I’m really glad you’re enjoying the videos! That’s definitely why I got the SP, I love the portability aspect. Appreciate you for watching and love the beard comment lol!!
Can you make a video using both the Akai MPC One and the Roland SP-404 MKII. Another request would be how to link them together. Great content that is easy to follow! Thank you!
Hey Ryan I absolutely love your videos and find them very helpful, you’ve really helped me get better at sampling. I’m not sure if you’ve heard of the band tv girl but I was wondering if you are able to figure out the key components of their music because I’ve really wanted to make a similar sound to them but don’t know how, if not that’s fine I just can’t really find anything online about it, keep up the great work and vids!
The most overly complicated machine ever made. I tried to get with it. But there’s just to much. I don’t get why you can’t just record a beat and add what you want without making patterns and deleting patterns then resampling patterns. When I could grab my mpc and do all that in 10 minutes. Not a diss to your video. Well done on that part. You made the most sense outta all the reviews on this crazy thing. If mpc made a product this small and compact and portable I would love to see that. Anyways just a small rant to anyone thinking about gettin one that’s not a genius like me. Or if you just like finger drumming and recording on pads this device isn’t for you either. Mpc can do all this and more and make full songs. For song making I don’t think the sp404 is capable of coming close to mpc. Oh yea I really like mpc lol 😂 good review I’m just not a fan if you can’t tell. But I did want to be. 😢
For me as a beginner who picked one up. I would say it’s amazing for beginners Atleast me for me. This machine gives you inspiration haha! It’s so fun and I do believe it’s good for beginners. There’s so much content out there for the sp 404 mk2
I agree, if you’re looking to get into sampling, it has a ton of features for the price. It also is a machine you’ll be able to grow with and use for a long time. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I do have a question. So I’m currently working with samples (mostly from Splice since I apparently racked up over 4000 samples before canceling, haha) and I find it hard to come up with more than one variation since most of them are just a simple progression. Any tips on how to work with different melodic samples and making them gel with each other?
One thing I'm looking for is how to auto stretch a loop to fit 16 steps without having to change the tempo or do any beat matching, something so simple yet I don't believe it's possible on the 404mk2. Other samplers do this natively. Basically how to do everything you did without chopping and using the original break.
Do you every use your iPad along side the sp404 as was wondering if you can trigger patterns of the iPad onto the Sequencer on the sp404 not many peoples showing this so I’m guessing it’s not that straightforward I’m yet to get my sp so would like to know if I’m using a sequencer externally as I’m not that great a finger drummer
Why is it that whenever I resample onto a new pad the sound becomes quieter? And it seems when I record out of the SP into say Logic or Ableton that it's never hitting 0db
The percussion point about there being no key is a bit misleading. Depending on how you are making/mixing your tracks you might want to make sure your drums actually are tuned to the key of the song. It’ll make the final mix tighter but… that’s if you want that.

This machine is a masterpiece for the price. Sampling is a true art. If done right, it's amazing and saves you so much money and time. Great videos.
You're an awesome teacher, thanks a lot for these!
This beats fire that bass slide is filthy 🔥
Thanks brother, yeah I was really feeling the bass in this sample!

Nice beat and video, sir. I can't stop using my mk2 since I got it. Peace.

Try making two songs and then linking them with a transition.

i have had every version of the sp
and sold all of them at one point looks like i maybe getting this one soon
Nicely done.

Dop vid Ryan!
Thanks man, appreciate you!!
Good work…👏🏾👏🏾
Thanks man, appreciate you!!
Dope video once again, will carry over some techniques to my MPC Live 2. Love how the compressor made the drums knock.
Thank you very much! Absolutely, I have done the same effects process on the MPC and it works just as well!
The sp 404 is the classic revolutionised ...I wonder what the mk3 be like in future
For real! I love how it has been completely redone, but still has the same vibe and inspiration as the original! For me at least
I only wish I could hear what he was bobbin' to instead of what was playing in the video.
That beat broke my brain.
Great one!
I Hope You’re Doing Amazing ❤❤❤❤
Cool stuff. Great beat. 🔥🤗❤

Yo what’s up Ryan! Love your intro man. 😂 I really need to mess w the compression. I usually just layer my drums and eq the second layer a bit lower.
Thanks man, appreciate you! Yeah I started using it a bit ago and love it. Thanks for supporting!
You can clearly see by the full beard, sweater and hat that Ryan has just played with the 404 for a month straight since the last video 😅
LOL you’re correct, I’ve just been locked in the studio cookin up 😂
Hey Ryan, was the sp404 mk2 easy to learn? I have no musical experience and would love the purchase one for sampling.

@@tainem2385 ... no there needs to be an auto stretch function... they actually did add one in the latest feature update.

nice video. drums do have a key though. and it's actually quite important in most genres to tune your drums correctly

Why was the resampled drum break quieter than the original one so that you had to normalize it?
Why is it that whenever I resample onto a new pad the sound becomes quieter? And it seems when I record out of the SP into say Logic or Ableton that it's never hitting 0db
btw I have fixed velocity ON and volume set at 127 for all pads

u should sell an online course ;)
