Let's fly to the middle of nowhere. Sounds fun, right? That's what we do here in Alaska. The backcountry isn't far from home, and flying an airplane is the best way to get there. Many a bush pilot will come, and there will be a stiff competition. But I think it's more like a rodeo.
We link up with some flying friends to head to Skwentna, a remote Alaska village and roadhouse with a really nice runway. A bunch of flying friends, many of them bush pilots, are going to meet up there and do a STOL (short takeoff landing) competition.
A group of us fly formation from Anchorage. We have 2 x Cessna 172s and a Piper SuperCub. Just outside the airport, we're already in the wilderness and heading over some rivers leading up to Skwentna.
Once we get there, it's a party. Lots of people showed up to commit aviation together. Airplanes everywhere, and some amazing performance from the bush pilots. As always, it's a really fierce competition.
And then everything went crazy. Thunderstorms started to approach, and what was a sunny day turned into a scramble for everyone to get to their planes and do the best they could. Some decided they wanted to takeoff and leave, which I don't think was the smartest thing to do, and others stayed put.
Back at the lodge after the rain stopped, there was a big gathering. Music, food and friends were all provided in spades.
We jumped in our planes following the party, and headed back to Anchorage, Alaska. It was a really wonderful formation flight and the light was just so nice.
It was an awesome day of aviation for all of us, and it's something we really look forward to in the summer in Alaska. It's good to share all that with friends and see a lot of the other pilots that we call friends.

Thanks for being here! In the comments -- What's a place that's on YOUR bucket list to fly to?
Lake County Airport, Leadville CO.... in the summertime!!!! 😱😜
Counter clockwise around Australia.
Once the government dystopia subsides
Catalina island AVX, monument valley UT25, Amboy route 66, and all over ALASKA (never been...)
@@richardseton7014 bloody Dictator Dan!! 😡😠
Grand Canyon, MT Rushmore, Washington DC, Bahamas, Florida Keys, and of course Alaska
That clear call is now my ringtone...
Ha!
I love that you talked on the point about making the personal no go decision. Even when others were making their own choices that might not be in line with yours (peer pressure) you easily make the decision to not fly. 🙏👍💪
I've been through it enough I guess to leave my ego behind. Makes for some awkward situations sometimes, but I plan on having a long, safe career.
Those clouds on short final look sick!!!!
Great video, great music, cool event, 10 out of 10. Cleeeeeaaarrrr!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Where did the high pitch shrieking “Clear” come from? 🤣 I’m dying laughing. Gotta be a story behind that
Wasn’t it a mistake with Josh that took off and just became a thing?
It was totally intentional with Josh, but yes, it started like a week before that with a student.
My bucket list is to watch you guys living life doing what you want to do. I missed my chance this go around but maybe next time.
I just bought my first plane 57 182A 6098B and currently a student pilot 25hrs. I live in NW Montana just south of Glacier National Park. Last spring I was riding my bicycle up going to the sun road and saw a Cessna in slow flight come over Logan Pass from St. Mary and ease down the Glacier Creek drainage towards Ryan Filed and thought to my self I'm going to do that. Another bucket list item is taking our mountain bikes to all the cool places around the PNW. I should have my PPL this spring. Keep up the first class content. My CFI is from Alaska and doesn't watch much youtube but really gets a good laugh when i giver the ol AOA CLEEEEEeeeeeeeRRR
That's awesome! Good for you for making it happen!
I really enjoy all of your videos. Keep it up and be safe. Thanks.
Great Video! Love the dynamics of the Lake Hood / ANC complex
Yeah, it's really interesting actually.
Chris, Another great video. Glad you were able to get out a little bit this last summer.
Me too. Still not enough!
Breath of fresh air video! Thanks!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
That was a fun weekend... hope to see you at the pumpkin drop tomorrow!!!
Going to try! We will see!
Have a good time guys, Fly Often, Fly Safe!
@@1logpil man, you can’t make this one either??? Bummer. Be safe too brother!
I live in North Carolina. If I had my pilot's license and a plane, I would fly the NC coast line and Outer Banks. I would fly over and land in Kill Devil Hills, especially Kitty Hawk to see the monument to The Wright Brother's first flight. I imagine seeing the Cape Hatteras lighthouse would be amazing. Then back home to either KGSO or KBUY.
I did get one of my bucket list items done a few weeks ago - landing my RV10 at Sydney International airport. Both exciting and sad. Amazing to see the operations at a large airport, and they were very accommodating to this little guy driving around :-)
That is awesome! Bet you felt really small at that massive airport.
Every time you shout CLEARRRRRRR it gets me man 😂😂
another great video man. Keep up the good work 👍🏼👍🏼
cool video, fun time. Maybe one of these years....
Enjoyed this so much! Thanks Chris. Throttle on!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing video, flying in Alaska is definitely on my bucket list!
It always was on mine too, then I moved here!
I am glad you stayed on ground during the thunderstorms. As I saw you rushing towards the plane, It didnt sound like a good idea to depart with all that adrenaline and pressure. What makes me have a huge respect for becoming an aviator is to know how I would behave in those circumstances. Would I let myself be influenced by factors such a crowd departing in the middle of a storm? Or would I be smarter than that and have a serene mind to make a right and independent decision? This is one of the things that pulls me into getting the ppl. I believe there is much more one can learn and improve on by becoming a pilot than just the act of flying. Thanks Chris. You are a great inspiration!
We never intended on taking off. We simply wanted to be there to hold the plane down if some gusts came through.
Spend the day flying to every grass field I can in Kentucky
That's a great idea.
Cleeeeeear!!! 👏👏👏🤣🤣🤣You are the best👍 Great vídeo, as always! Greetings from Spain man! 🤙🏻
Thanks! 😃
I am hoping for delivery of my Aeroprakt A32 to Melbourne Australia in Dec / Jan and I can't wait to go to some fly in's !
But the first adventure will be flying it across country to home in Perth.
I would love to fly in Australia some day.
Trip to First Flight would be a good one from my area.
I've done that, it was awesome!
I love your videos. I spent 2016 & 2017 working in Bettles. I so miss Alaska, but it's a good season to stay put in Maine. Love the plane - I fly a '64 172E model.
Very cool! Bettles is something else!
@@angleofattack - My wife, daughter and I are a little less normal after living in Bettles, but that's okay.
"commit aviation" I like it... Bucket wise... Hop on over from South Africa on a commercial and then do a flying holiday of Alaska. The float flying looks awesome!
Float flying is the best!
after regional lockdown want to do my ppl here in Germany. My goal one day would be flying around in Alaska :-)
Sounds like the perfect plan.
Same! Unless I`m from Romania :))
YES! YES! YES!!! I got my dose of CleeArrrrrrr!!!! for the weekend! Now I gotta go flying!!! What is on my bucket list? I want to fly to Merrill Field to visit my brother and his family then fly down to Homer to meet you and get some bush flying time in!
Glad you enjoyed it. Make it happen man!
Not really a bucket list flight but, after 16 yrs of not flying (rusty pilot) I bought my first airplane a 160 hp pa-22 with Hendricks wing extensions. I need to complete a flight review and I need to fly it from my home in northern Wisconsin to Carlsbad NM where I’m working. I’m a little nervous and completely excited! Then I will dream about flying to Alaska site seeing and camping out of the airplane. Thanks for sharing your experiences with us!
You're most welcome. Sounds like there's a lot of fun in your future!
Excellent well put-together video, music and content. You keep making videos like this and there will be more of us show up...Would love to fly around your neck of the woods sometime!
Great video, this was one of your best. The formation flight was really cool with the super cub and the fly-in shots were exciting to see. The decisions you make and discuss really help set a safe standard for all pilots to follow. Keep up the great work!
Drew
Glad you enjoyed it! I'll be sure to make an effort to share those thoughts more often.
Outstanding video as usual. Looking forward to being able to get out like that again, Minnesota is getting tighter again, sad to say.
Always inspirational thanks for sharing
My pleasure! Make sure to subscribe.
Warmer winters than here in Manitoba!
Fly into Oshkosh for air venture.....bucket list
That's a lot of work!
WHERE ARE YOUR MASKS!!! LOl!
I love the vid!
This is exactly the kind of adventure I'd like to go on in Maine. Very similar wilderness. Can't afford a license and definitely can't afford a bush plane though, especially with a kid on the way.
Yeah, tough with family.
nice to find inside things in the comment section. things I woudnt learn from books sometimes :)) I m an aircraft engineer (degreed and also a A/C mechanic), but I am planning also getting a PPL licence somewhere in the future. nice videos, AOA!
I would fly from TX to Alaska and everything in between. Dream trip .... if I ever get a license to do so
Make it happen! Some day!
Bucket list. Iceland and Greenland
Did the shrieking CLEEAAR while hand propping my BC12D Taylorcraft the other day, friends came running with a garbage can and a scoop thinking I'd stepped into the prop...we all laughed...eventually.
Good stuff as always! And great edit!!
It's an AMAZING edit :D
My bucket list is soo big. But if I’d have to narrow it down, I think it would be over the Grand Canyon
Closely followed by all of Alaska of course
That's a great spot. Done that several times.
Great video.
Me and my girlfriend really would love to fly over the red woods and through Idaho backcountry
That would be awesome! Make it happen.
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing!! Question: Why did I hear the stall warning when you rotated? Could you have rolled a bit more before doing so? Thanks again.
Yeah, we could have rolled some more for sure.
So fun. Would love to see New England Pilots do a similar event in Maine or NH. It’s quiet out here and mostly pavement
That would be fun.
I remember flying over fire island on approach to PANC back when I was a FO for Atlas Air.
Yup!
Great video Chris. Looked like a really fun event and as you say great to fly there as a group. Covid has seen most events cancelled her in the UK. The only one I have been able to get to was at the World War One airfield at Stow Maries. Originally built to protect London from the Zeppelins. If you have the time (or the inclination) have a look and see what your cousin across the pond gets up to, 🤔 📽 A Really Great Stow Maries Wings & Wheels Event 2020. Take care and stay safe 😎👍🇬🇧Tim
Thank you my friend. Always great to see your name pop up.
One of the things I'd like to do when I get my ticket is tour the Lake Superior shoreline along Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The water is super clear and the beaches and rock formations would be fantastic to see low and slow. Check out Pictured Rocks!
I've done a little bit of that and it's FANTASTIC!
@@angleofattack I was just telling someone this afternoon that I'd like to fly from my parents place in Ironwood area (KIWD) along the shore to pictured rocks and then stay in my college town Marquette (KSAW). I did so much exploring on foot back in the day, I'd love to do some aerial recon now 😎
Not trying to ingratiate myself here, but definitely want to fly into Seldovia.
That's a great spot!
I've had a long time goal of landing in every airport in Washington State, still have a lot to go lol!
(At least I was able to get KSEA out of the way during COVID)
Have you ever trained an above knee amputee? And if so do you have any advice going in that they should know?
well done!
Thanks
It makes shire everyone gets home.
me and my grandpa have been going into the idaho backountry in his bushmaster
You make that call your own
I'm doing a world flight on my DA62 and will have a stop at anchorage.... Hope to meet you and take some guidance.🙏
Dang. Why don't you stop in Homer?!
@@angleofattack will definitely try to
@@KiranAgrawal Wow man you make me dream. Safe skies!

Great video! New sub for me. Just a flight simmer but I really enjoy aviation. 👍👌
There's plenty to learn from real aviation!
I d seen mosquitos up there damn near as big as a Super Cub, and pissed off
I want to fly from Montreal to Alaska and hangout with you guys
Billings to West Yellowstone in an Archer iii, than backpacking the 50 mile Thorofare Trail in Yellowstone national park. 🤟
I really enjoyed your flight to the Middle-of-Nowhere; unfortunately, I cannot fly anywhere as we are still in lockdown, Melbourne Australia.
Sorry to hear that.
Once I finish my PPL I want to take my Cherokee to Angel Fire, NM (KAXX). The approach looks cool from the north between two peaks and my wife and I love to paddle board at Grand Lake, CO which is about 40nm from where I park N7055R (KBJC). A lot faster than the 2.5 hr drive.
There are numberless awesome places in your area.
Hello I’m a great fan and love your vids. My adventure would be to fly from north weald essex uk to the st.marys Isles of Scilly in the uk hope to do the trip in 2021.
That would be awesome!
I want to take my “not done yet” yellow cub down to uncle Leif’s house and camp out on the couch.
Nice “Work” AoA!
Thanks Terry! It's work :D
Where is your airport? I want to search it cause I love the scenery
Commit aviation!!!! Bahahahaha!!! That should be a shirt!
I want to try and fly a formation flight with my other buddy who is also a pilot.
Make it happen!
Make sure you both get formation training first!
Ranger Creek in Washington by Mt. Rainier.
Oooooooo, yeah, that always looked awesome.
Hudson River VFR corridor with a couple laps around Lady Liberty 🇺🇸
Bucket list for me, too!
In response to your question, I live in eagle River so I would love to get my private pilot and do this same trip
Certainly doable!
Lets get this VID to 50k!!!!!!!!!!!!
That would be awesome.
I want to take a float plane, flying boat, or amphibian on a two week long fishing trip all the way to every nook, cranny, and corner of Lake Powell and then take it up to flaming gorge.
Invite me! I love Lake Powell
Hello AOA, that storm cell with such large precipitation would cause me concern (Australian:eastern seaboard) development of hail stones. I'd check the radar for CB.
🌏🇭🇲
There were CBs for sure. Which is why I was staying put.
*14:10** Stall horn, why dont u build up some speeds before pulling the yoke backwords* !? Greetings from Mozambique....
I am not a pilot but from what i have seen in other of his videos, it is due to non asphalt runways and tires. You lift off quickly to prevent damage on wheels or propeler. Then you build up speed on ground effect and finally, you start the climb. Hope some real pilot can confirm.
@@pi3080 You're correct. That is the technique for soft/unimproved (dirt, grass, etc) runways. You're perfectly fine while in ground effect until you can accelerate up to climb speed. The trick is to make sure you stay in ground effect until you're at climb speed though.
@@pi3080 Thank u!
@@Baseballjunky090 Thank u!
Just curious, what size tires are on 423U?
Counter clockwise around Australia.
Would be awesome.
I wanna fly a Cessna 172 to bora bora lol, it will never happen though.
That seems bold.
$12 for a hot dog?? $16 for a burger??? Yikes!
Alaska prices!
i have been looking for someone to go fly around Alaska with ever since a "friend" got his priorities messed up and bailed on me to get married instead
!32 aircraft?
Hey, do you think I can have a shoutout in your next video? Please
👍
I was watching flightchops and the instructor had to student crash and die. They loss power on takeoff and pulled back not push forward. If you can watch it.
it awesome everyone is wearing a mask and being safe.
What is it with everyone with the beards?
Any African Americans aviators in Alaska?
Yup! A handful of people of color are aviators here.
