I can understand that. But a jacket it really just like making the top half of a dress. I find that making a mock up first in cotton, instead of the more expensive fabric, helps me figure out what I'm doing and lets me practice all the steps before I cut into the real fabric.

The mesh is called netting or net. It has a different name is each area. It is the fabric that the under layers of a tutu are made of. You can buy it from the costume/cosplay/dance section of a large, cheap fabric store.
