Reviews:
"I didn't see this episode until some thirty years after it was produced...but for me, it is one of a precious few Bonanza episodes that I hold dear. Inger Stevens is an absolute marvel as a dying young woman who is sadly part of a criminal family that has crossed the Cartwrights--and she falls in love with Hoss when he shows her the "beauty" that hides beneath the "beast". Hoss, while acting as their protection as they return to California, proves to be her knight in shining armor--but she know that she is dying; as a result, she cannot allow him to love her, either.
Eventually, these "dying girlfriend" plot lines would become routine in Bonanza (I used to use the line "that lasted about as long as a Cartwright wife")--but this one was the first--and the most powerful. We see the gruff Hoss blossom as he clumsily but tenderly reveals his emotions, and as he tries to understand why she won't--and can't--love him in return...and we feel his pain and loss.
This episode, along with the tragic "Forever", represent the Bonanza franchise for me." Written by Popeye-8 on IMDb.com
"Inger Stevens made Bonanza history with this third episode of the series where she becomes the first female to fall for a Cartwright son and the first to die. It was the preferred method of the writers of Bonanza to keep the all male Cartwright family unit intact.
An expedition is led by mining magnate John Larch and his partner Robert Knapp. Along with the group is Knapp's sister Inger Stevens who is in an advanced stage of tuberculosis. Knapp wants to also get her to a dry desert climate." [...] Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

Hoss was the absolute BEST‼️ He was big and strong 💪 with a huge heart. This episode made me cry. Dan Blocker was an excellent actor.
So it's indeed Hoss, and not Horse!?
Dear Marie, in order to keep the world fragrant it is very important a flower doesn't droop, in the same way it is very important that you stay happy and don't cry. I pray may your beautiful face always glow with happiness and shed tears only of joy.
@@rReclaimer Apparently he was the easiest cast member to get along with. Went far too young. Hoss is the boss and always will be.
I think acting was easy for him,he just played himself.

You know many years ago people use to ask me which was the best family TV show on the air . The one that depicted the best family values , the best lessons the best parenting if parents were involved . They expected me to say "Father knows best" " Leave it to beaver" "Bachelor Father" or a couple of others whose names I don't recall. They were surprised
when I said Bonanza. Their response was oh that's just a western .
My response to them was, " Really, you have not been paying attention "
I love you saying/ writing this.
Ben Cartwright and your boys fight for what you believe in good job Cartwright family stick together 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
When things get a little crazy I always like to take a visit to the Ponderosa !!!!!!!!!!
Oh I cried just when Hoss, met a pretty, young, girl who loved him.
Hoss conquers another woman, man, child, animal, with his gentle, kindness, patience and lovable personality. Love it
The world needs more broads like you, Olivia.
Reminds me of Inger, his mom. She had the same loveable personality, she was kind, gentle, sweet, and patient. They both were amazing.

“We talked it out Hoss, we think you can do this best” and did! Dan Blocker’s acting was superb! One of my favorite episodes
Hoss was so loving. I could see falling in love with Hoss. He would make a wonderful husband. So romantic ❤️❤️❤️ RIP Dan Blocker. You were a talented actor and a wonderful human being❤️🙏
You know HOSS , you don't know DAN BLOCKER! Any more than I do!
Oh, yes he would. Hoss reminds me a little of his mom. She was sweet, kind, gentle, and pretty. Hoss is the same. He obviously inherited his mother's kindness, sweetness, and gentleness. Hoss would be an amazing husband for sure, you are so right.
True, but we can imagine.@@analoguecity3454

Emily is such a sweet girl, I wish she would recover somehow and show up to meet Hoss in Spring time!
Ugh!!! I was in tears with this episode it got me. Hoss loving someone who is dying and finding out after she tells him she loves him.
Another good western Hoss is so caring with people and Animals love watching Bonanza
This one tore my heart out. When Hoss is alone after Emily left, & asking God to help him understand why she had to die, I really felt it. My husband was very ill for several years & I lost him almost 2 years ago. I'm still trying to understand why I had to lose him, especially since he wasn't that old (57). Dan Blocker's acting was so good... I had to remind myself that his heartbreak wasn't real.
When she promised Hoss she'd be with him in the spring, as one who has faced and accepted her death, I believe she would be there with him
Sorry to hear that Darlene, but please let your heart be relieved and consoled by the following information which I am giving you, not just to cheer you up but as an undeniable truth and fact : I also thought I lost a loved one a while ago and couldn't face it. I became really weak and knew I would not live for long. I asked God for help and I received a verse from the holy koran Scripture where God tells us that if any dispute that how can the dead be brought back to life then reply to them 'the one who gave life can easily bring them back to their original form'. and this is what will happen even if they have become ashes etc, everyone will return to their original form. The power, glory and generosity of God is too great to allow something he created to perish. I prayed to God and was assured I will see that person one day Alive. As gratitude I give regular charity, have donated for water pumps and pray for the wellbeing of others. Your husband is resting in a good hands. Just do good deeds in his name, pray to God, eat well, hope for the best and keep yourself assured. Sending you prayers for your good, health, happiness, tranquillity and peace of mind.
Dear Darlene I have written after your comments on the bonanza episode newcomers hope it helps you.
And my husband died from a glioblastoma multiflori brain cancer. We had only been married one year and two months. He was only 37 years old when he died and I was 30 years old and left with 2 girls and 1 boy all under the age of 9 years old. I never remarried, I’m 78 years old and I live with my oldest daughter and her husband. They and my four granddaughters take excellent care of me. I had tongue cancer so the doctors removed most of my tongue and made me a reasonable facsimile from the skin off of my left wrist. Radiation ☢️ treatments ruined my teeth so they had to be pulled. All of my food has to be blended except things like jello and things soft enough that I don’t have to chew them, I can just swallow them. Sometimes I’d give most anything for a medium rare steak 🥩 or a Whopper burger 🍔 from Burger King 🤴🏼 or an order of chicken 🍗 thighs and French fries from Kentucky Fried Chicken 🍗. 😋😋😋😋
I could listen all day long to this theme song 🎶.
Dan was such a good actor and played so many different aspects of Hoss’s character during the series to create a character that everyone loved. R.I.P. Dan 🙏🏻

I loved this show as a baby boomer back then it was a favorite because it was in " COLOR " !! I watched not for the characters so much but because it was in color. The only one who had a color TV set was my aunt and uncle they.lived in queens ny. So when I would visit them I would sit one their carpet in the living and watch BONANZA!! I was just a kid then as I grew up I started liking the characters in the show I had no favorites right away but later on I started to like the episodes with Parnell Roberts the best. All of the actors who played the characters that they did were great!!!
The cartwrights curse always make me cry

yes
And Emily a demoness......well, at least she started out like that, especially when she called Hoss ugly and told him to leave her alone. But, towards the end, she became an angel to Hoss. And at least we knew why she seemed satanically hostile....it was due to her terminal illness!
What a fine actor Dan Blocker was!
I was needing a visit to the Cartwrights it always gives me a good feeling.
Hoss had the most episodes where he had a love interest. During the entire BONANZA run he played the romantic lead more times than any of the other brothers.
Such a good actor! Always a smiling face. Such a talent. Hoss Cartwright. I am in love with this character.❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊
I love Hoss so much.
Hoss is the best of them !
Haha @ Senior Cartrights burns and doo. Love bonanza! was watching it at age 3.
I just had to watch this one again.
A real heartbreaking episode here people..
Hoss is my favorite character
This was such a good episode! Poor Hoss. It's so sad loving someone who's dying.
💘
Its not sad..its tragic
Interesting history behind this series. Bonanza was one of my favorite shows but it is interesting to note that when this series came out it was one of the first TV shows to be broadcast in COLOR! NBC owned RCA and RCA at the time was pushing a brand new technology of Color TV! They were, as a consequence really pushing this series because it highlighted this new technology! Today with internet, HD video etc., we take this early technology for granted.
A little more research is in order for you, William.
Color TV was novel, yes, but brand new? Not exactly.
First, RCA owned NBC, not the other way around. RCA had developed their all-electronic B&W compatible color system (as opposed to CBS's electromechanical color system with a spinning disc in every set) years earlier but had to wait until December 1953 to get approval from the FCC to actually use it. But once they did, they pretty much pulled out the stops. The Rose Bowl Parade was broadcast in color on New Year's Day 1954 on NBC.
An interesting thing about "Bonanza" is that its being filmed in color was what saved it from cancellation after the first season. Ratings reportedly weren't that great, and NBC execs were considering pulling the plug, but since they had already invested the money in expensive color film AND, as you correctly pointed out, were pushing color TV hard because their *parent company* RCA manufactured the sets, and because you can't promote a color show if you've canceled it, it was decided to keep it on.
What a sweet gentle soul hoss is! What a heartbreaking experience for the big man, hoss was always my favourite even as a child in the 60's!👶😊🤠
This episode has so many great comments it shows how popular the show was to many people.
This was a great episode. I did not know Ben Cartwright was a rolling stone buried three bady mamas.
Oh my. The show here I liked was Hoss & Emily who were given that special, rare moment of knowing what love is, what it feels like at first, the dreadful pain of losing it. This is one of the finest, maybe the shortest though...love story I have seen in a long time.
I experienced what Ol' Hoss did over 55 years ago, but it was not to be and it still pains me yet every single day.
I Am so glad that girl changed her mind toward Hoss so she wasn't ugly after all
That dam Cartwright curse strikes again with women this time with Hoss, great episode 👍🏽
AND it's only season 1, episode 3!
0:52 I don't get why ppl hate that version of the opening theme, I like it.
So sweet. And always a moral to the stories here. Old America was so cool. Now….Hollyweird has ruined this art form.
Boy! This was one of the Most Emotional Episodes I experienced watching as this being just episode 3 with other emotional episodes to come! Always Loved the character of Hoss the most! The murder of Jose and the Botanist was tough enough! Also, I love the shirts the Cartwrights are wearing. Adam looks really good in tan/khakis.
Yeah, it was a great episode. But what I don't get is why didn't Emily want Hoss to know she was dying? He had a right to know. He was planning on marrying her.
Adam looks good in everything. But I don't think the blacks he settled on eventually really did him justice.
@@crimsonrose5594 it was hard enough for her to face her death on her and seeing how it would hurt Hoss would have been terrible for her
little did they know the blue stuff turned out to be silver and the biggest strike ever "Comstock Load"
Interesting how an attractive, beautiful woman brings the best and most powerful emotions from the heart and soul of a gent [ Dan/ Hoss ]. And when there is a reciprocating spirit of love and understanding the two become one in harmony and rhythm. As well when there's the pain of loss drawn into the picture the family brings the pain into a full circle that makes everything seem to balance itself together again.
A brilliant series, I like all the Cartwright family characters but hoss is my favourit.
Hoss in his prime , look at the size of him. 1 in a million.
Poor Hoss. He fall in love with Emily and came to really love her. She too. First Hoss loses his mother Inger when he was just a baby and now he's found Emily only that Emily was very ill and only has a month to live must tear Hoss apart. Even though Hoss doesn't remember that much about Inger his mother. Ben tells Adam,Hoss and Little Joe all about their mothers because Ben loved Elizabeth Cartwright(Adam's mother)Inger Cartwright(Hoss's mother)and Marie Cartwright(Little Joe's mother). So losing yet a woman the Cartwright brothers came to love deeply end up dying just like their mothers did.
One of the best shows every made u think your lonely..anyway thanks for posting 📫🙏👍BLESS U 🙌🙏❤
The mining man was pretty dozy - he didn't know anything about the Cartwrights but thought that everyone in the area would be keen to burn down their ranch
Inger Stevens was secretly married to African American Ike Jones from 1961 to her death. This beautiful 🌹 lady sadly committed suicide on April 30, 1970 at the age of 35 😢.
That is terrible! Such a princess ending her own life like that!
Q
From what I heard there was going to be a longer than usual continuation of this heartbreaking episode but due to other ideas it just didn't get done.
That script/episode was something like this -
'Emily wants to see Hoss one last time before she is about to die.
Hoss becomes too weak and ill with grief. hop sing (who is particularly close and sensitive to hoss) notices hoss isn't eating well and decides to do something about it, despite being told nothing can be done. Hop sing summons his uncle Mr kong kong from China who happens to be very well versed in herbal medicine. Upon arriving to the ponderosa hop sing's uncle requests for arrangement of Emily to stay at the ponderosa so he can start checking her. While Joe shows kong kong around the ponderosa, Kong Kong notices two very rare and much sought after health giving herbs which although very rare in China are abundant and plentiful in the usa - the passion fruit and the custard apple. Kong Kong immediately arranges these fruits to be administered as medicine for the terminally ill Emily. An emotional hoss sees this as a light of hope, slightly gets back on his feet and starts praying to God for help. Emily's cough disappears and she suddenly says she feels very healthy. Kong kong keeps giving her the two fruits as medicine which hoss feeds her with his own hands. Eventually the Dr comes with Emily's death certificate and after a thorough medical is shocked to see her fully recovered. Ben rips the death certificate apart, Adam, john, Joe, and everyonelse is overjoyed and a wedding gets planned. Happiness, love and laughter abound the Cartwright household once again. The health benefits of the passion fruit and custard apple become big news and Many famous people such as mark Twain (who in real life did speak highly of the custard apple) come to Ben to do business in promoting these fruits. Kong kong arranges a deal with an overjoyed Ben and the government of China for the import and export of these fruits. Just before the film is about to end, a transcript is read that speaks of the importance of looking after and protecting trees and forests.
Inger Stevens also played in Hang em high with Clint Eastwood.

Dan Blocker was my favorite, even as a little girl. I always wanted to have a husband like him and I surely do...lol
Maybe one day you will. Or if you already have.
Lucky you.
They were a bit rougher in these early episodes. I don't know if the show would have lasted if Ben hadn't become a wiser, more moralistic leader of his family.
The Death count was pretty high in these shows....

I live in a state with many deer hunters coming in from other states. It is amazing what people mistake for deer.
You know most had crush on little Joe -- Not me! My babe was always Hoss!
If there was ever a gal that would of been perfect for Hoss it would of been Emily. (I don't just say this because we share a name either!) I was really sad that she had to die, but Hoss's grief was way harder to watch. (It always hits different when Hoss cries then when any of the other Cartwrights do.) I never would of thought that Hoss was the very first Cartwright to have a romance in the show. It kinda surprised me! You actually hear about Emily again in The Philip Diedeshiemer Story when Hoss is consoling Helene after her fiancé dies in the mine. (I'm pretty sure this is the only time one of the Cartwrights brings up a lost love in another episode, besides Ben's wives of course. I could be wrong, but I'm in season six and I haven't heard them mention any girls who've died or left them.)

Never seen this episode before.
Excellent show
Why wouldn't she stay on the Ponderosa, where the climate was better for her and Hoss could take care of her?
You are right. It seems any reasonable woman, although deathly ill, would stay with the man she loves. But that qouldn't provide a tidy ending for tv executives. It's so frustrating to have an ending like that because Hoss doesn't find love easily. He doesn't generally pursue women.
@@ashiengher131 TV executives or the show's writers? Maybe both. Maybe the writers were doing the bidding of the guys who pay the bills (NBC executives), who knows? But you're right about romance never working out for the Cartwright gentlemen. You're also right about Hoss not pursuing women, but in this case, it was almost inevitable in that they were in close quarters with each other by virtue of the fact that he'd gotten her out of harm's way and was taking care of her. They got to know each other and she came to love who Hoss was underneath the big brutish exterior.
She knew she had a month to live, according to the doctors. Emily didn't want to put that on Hoss. She never told him just how ill she was. When she said she will be with him come springtime, she meant in a spiritual sense.
Your videos are wonderful please and clear please could you do The Ride and Jackknife i would love to see them clear and bright
