Yes, all the moaning about a 'wet Spring' which is necessary for plant growth, followed by a warm stretch has produced a wealth of greenery and bumper crops for those who managed to get their planting done. Harvest time has been generally good too with ploughing started nicely in time for the winter varieties of crops.
It is a shame, though, at the lack of wildlife, especially insects, that could have taken advantage of this largess.

Even if there is a main lift or series of canals another alternative to a series of lock is ship rollers. they have 1,000'+ ships move on rollers so a canal boat would be nothing to push up a hill or push down one, and far more could be moved in this way an hour.

Had someone dang near cuss me out when I suggested they should build a handful of new routes for broad-beams so they could better access areas that take to long to get to (like this video) and access the entire network as much of it they can't access at all..... I know this is looked at as a project of the past, but when you see all the videos on housing problems in the U.K. it is obvious that a great solution would be making the boat housing market more attractive, as it would raise competition within the market, and many people who won't live in a narrow beam would live in a broad-beam especially if they could access the entire canal network. It would help with the political goal of helping second cities in England as individuals will have access to them with no new road or rail needing to be built, and most of the canal already built. It would also bring more money into the coffers to rebuild much of the destroyed network as more citizens would be concerned about the waterways.

The point of the original canals and railways were they were freight moving infrastructure. Passenger movement was peripheral and justified by the Parliamentary Trains that allowed movement of workmen at a penny per mile so giving a mobile industrial population. Today there is no vital need for the massive expense of canals other than tourism which is important to justify maintenance but difficult to justify new construction.
