The GHOST Roads of England: Part 2
Просмотров 10 тыс.6 месяцев назад
It's time to head out once again, in search of some lost roads which over the centuries would have once served as main routes for locals. The first road is located near Marston Moretaine, about 6 miles south of Bedford. The second road ends up being a bit of a nightmare - but I manage to talk about a recent sad story involving the A1. This time, for the third example, I venture OUT of Bedfordsh...

Brogborough 'Round House' in Bedfordshire is a 17th century house that fell into irreversible decay in the 1980s. I head over there to check out the site, as well as a nearby medieval church near Ridgmont, dating back to the 11th century. A brief history concerning some of the land which Universal purchased for their potential UK theme park. You should check out this channel for further updates regarding the progress: @UniversalStudiosGBUpdates Thanks to Julian Clode @jktc777 for letting me use his shots taken of Stewartby Brickworks in 1990. The GHOST Railways of England
Просмотров 41 тыс.9 месяцев назад
I take a look at two former railways which were closed in 1960s and have remained so ever since. The first example is a section of the Varsity line between Bedford and Sandy, which the National Cycle Route 51 now occupies (I think I forgot to mention that in the video). The second line is part of the Bedford to Northampton branch, which is partly-occupied by Stevington Country Walk which I trav...
The GHOST Roads of England

In this video, I go and take a look at a few stretches of road in Bedfordshire which are no longer in use, and have since been left abandoned. Some people refer to these forgotten routes as 'ghost roads'. A few old artifacts are found by myself along the way. I also have a quick look at the piece of land near Bedford that has been recently purchased by Universal Studios, with the ambition of co...

First EVER video! Taking a look at the ruined Houghton House, Bedfordshire. www.buymeacoffee.com/brickdust
Dude you ok? As you haven’t uploaded for awhile
@trapdoorspider9211 Yeah all good mate, I just haven't had much time to film recently. But I'm getting back out there soon! Got loads of videos planned 😁
@ alright dude just thought I’d check. As there’s been a few RUclipsrs that I sub to have died. And one particular one where his life was threatened then he disappeared along with his channel said RUclipsr ex copper was exposing particular info as a result his life was threatened and lost his house so was living in a van exposing from his phone on RUclips said channel was called Gary. Other people he got involved one of which got took to a mental hospital to be assessed that being Laura Nina RUclipsr. Good to hear your ok👍
One of the most stupid closures by British Rail - and Beeching wanted to keep it open!
The ‘old coal train bridge’ had nothing to do with coal trains. No idea where that label appeared from. It was a farm occupation bridge. The coal trains which ran to Goldington power station left the route way before this at what’s now the car park entrance to Priory Park, and crossed the river into the power Stn. You can see the abutments from the now road bridge by Barkers Lane. The line was actually in situ right up to about 1981 long after the rest of the line to Sandy had been removed. I remember the very odd coal train crossing what was then a recent level crossing on the new dual carriageway on the Cardington Rd. Only lasted about 5 yrs before it was redundant. Bedford, or Goldington power station shut in about 1982 and it’s all housing now.
If someone said to me that only three RUclips channels can remain, then BrickDust would definitely be in there. Let's hope there is more to come in 2025.
@@stevenharvey1447 Cheers mate!
This is such an excellent channel.
@@stevenharvey1447 Thanks Steven. Hoping to get some new videos out soon 👍
Love these videos but could you do a video on the old Bedford to Hitchin rail going through old warden
I want you to see the abandoned railway behind Safari Park
Thumbs up,I wonder if there was any iron age shops in the area.Thanks.
@@mikego18753Cheers Mike. I'd love to go back 3,000 years and have a look!
Thanks
Well put together vid, thumbs up. Also may I be the first to wish you a merry Christmas? Thanks
Need some wellies
Really really enjoy your videos very interesting 👍 loads of Ghost Roads in Scotland I'm sure you would like
@@ChrisWest-q9s Cheers Chris!
Think you need some wellies. Oh you just said it as I watched!
you should go to march to wisbech line as its still got track on it
Another great interesting watch thanks for taking the time out for this. By the way, my favourite crisps are ready salted french fries. I wonder if we ever find out who the phantom crisp graffiti artists is, it is getting a bit like Banksy.
I'm not sure if you're interested or not, or if you would even be able to gain access to it, but Northampton once had an underground railway from town centre to kingsthorpe. I'm told you can still see part of it in basements of the shops along the route.
Sadly with the crt just caring about paying fat cat bonuses this won't go ahead they are cutting maintaince and utilitys on all other canals can't see them stumping up cash for another canal that needs to be maintained when they skip repairing most already .They are more intrested in paying huge salarys to the ceo Mr parry on over double what the pm of county's on and its supposed to be a charity
I got told originally there was a connection but they removed it.
The A421 could easily be converted into a canal to link MK and Bedford. It seems to hold water very well indeed.
Another 200 years.
I remember getting the leaflets through the door in the 1990’s about this project. A great video, as always. Love seeing my local area on RUclips.
Very interesting indeed, especially as I had a winter mooring in Milton Keynes two or three years ago and was fascinated by the project. I did a good bit of walking in the area, looking for clues.
If they stop funding migrants and Ukraine, the money is available.
Brilliant! And no, you’re not the only one who would get up at half six to do this sort of stuff.
How does the cost of this project compare with HS2?
Will it be as expensive and destructive as HS2
Massive exaggeration!!!
This was promised when Blair came to power. Just another empty promise. The business case said it would take 400 boats a day! Reality intervened.
Well if Universal Studios does happen, Bedford council won't be short of a bob or two to pay for it.
Love this. I find the exploration of old roads and railway lines fascinating. Thanks for posting and the time/effort it took.
Will it take widebeam though
really good
really good
Great video, a lot of fascinating information.
Feel bad for Bedford residents having to be connected to Milton Keynes
I went up to the house when it was still complete and took some photos of it, which I now need to find. It was pretty imposing to say the least. I wonder who owns it?
@@jrbs I'd love to see the photos!
People are rightly commenting about being disgusted by the demolition of brick viaducts and Victorian railway engineering but forget about the context of when these things were demolished. Viewing Victorian architecture as positive and worth preserving is a relatively recent phenomenon, the 1950s saw brick the same way that many people view concrete and glass buildings today. They were literally everywhere, they cost a lot to maintain and were often caked in soot and dirt from the environment. We like Victorian buildings and brick viaducts today because the good ones survived and the bad examples of slums, crumbling bridges and smoke stacks didn’t. The same thing has started to happen with the brutalist architecture of the 60s & 70s where people morn the loss of buildings like Robinhood gardens and say how innovative and bold the Barbican is but forget about the awful Tricorn in Portsmouth or crumbling, nameless apartment buildings that have all faced the wrecking ball.
Building new canal infrastructure when the CRT doesn't even have enough money to maintain existing and restored canal and river infrastructure 🤣
Back in about 2005i became aware of the missing link plan. How many years prior to that i do not know. I do consider it would be fantastic addition to the canal network and with it huge tourist potential which will help the economy. It is however not a new or even recent idea.
Love your channel. Am from Bedfordshire but live in Cambs. I wondered if you thought about looking at the old road and abandoned houses off Salford Road where the A421 ends in Milton Keynes by the M1. What3words location is: endings.realm.brighter
What are you on about? Either it’s a vlog about the link or milk bottles
it will never happen
Don’t tell anyone but you can get to the Brewery Tap from the towpath by reaching through the gate and pressing the big green release button.
@@halfbee My lips are sealed. I'll keep that in mind for next time!
It's a pity Milton Keynes didn't stay as a 'small farming village'.
How has this project escaped the attention of local environmentalists? Surely the environmental impact could never be justified by any possible potential social or economic benefits? If this canal is getting government funding then it needs to stop now. Local and national opposition should be raised against this waste.
Autoshenanigans did a video on the Black Cat roundabout.
Is there any chance of linking north to south for broad beams?
Thought not
I love your warm gentle enthusiasm.
Why don't you go up to see the work on the Litchfield and Hatherton Canal trust who are somewhat down the line with canal restoration in progress. You could also to the Strafford Riverway Link. I have a video on this. That is a shorter walk into the fascinating town of Stafford. The lockeepers house there, whose ruins you can see belonged to my ancestors.
@@marieascot Thanks for that, I'll do some reading on that and check out your video.
@@BrickDust Cruising the cut channel has also done a video in the last few days "The plan to deliberately breach a canal, to join it to a town."
An excellent video.
@@marieascot Thank you very much!
