      @tuckerbowen4626 ,
      5-minutes of googlin' after your question sparked my curiosity produced the following unofficial uses of the term in regards to psychology:
      1) as an alternate term for pathelogical compulsive lying.
      2) as a symptom of Gelotophobia (pathelogical fear of being laughed at) in which the subject takes on "wooden" and lifeless movement and expression. Gelotophobes may also lash out violently at anyone they perceive to be mocking or ridiculing them or not taking them seriously.
      So, it's not a terrible title for a psychological thriller/puppet horror story.

    My personal theory about this film is...
    Having spent the majority of her career defending murderers, the mother has lost the ability to see *anyone* as guilty, even making up a justification for their actions; such as her first client.
    Her refusal to look facts in the face, is what leads her to seeing the puppet come to life and attack her.
    She literally can't believe that her daughter is capable of such things and thus her mind invents a killer doll.
    After all, the doll was *made* by a killer, so it *must* be the killer.

    • @garrick3727
      @garrick3727 Год назад +10

      This is also what I thought. The film is careful to establish that the daughter is a little psycho BEFORE the puppet is introduced to the story. The scene with the puppet's lips moving is there to establish that the daughter is hearing voices from the puppet, since we see the same scene again from the video tape and the puppet's lips are not moving from that perspective (which would have worked better if they did the lips for all the scenes with just the girl and the puppet, but it was probably expensive to do). I think the whole film is about killers finding excuses for their murders (the "I heard voices" defense) and people who are willing to believe that demons are responsible. As you say, the film takes many steps to show the mother will not believe clear evidence, to the point where she sees the puppet rather than her daughter.

      I mean... it's pretty spelled out that the mother is a screwball as well. She's coming up with crazy theories about demons possessing inanimate objects and forcing people to kill than just accepting some people fucking kill other people. She's so fucked in the head, she physically can not see her daughter as the murdering psychopath that she is and instead sees a doll. She's unable to see actual people as guilty anymore, even if it's happening directly to her. Honestly, the fact that the mother isn't in a straightjacket and locked away in a padded cell at the end is the biggest injustice of the entire movie. I was rooting for the puppet/daughter to rid the world of her idiocy/crazy. If she's allowed to continue working, she's going to get a murderer off on appeals or early release to probably go and kill again. She's a danger to herself and others. Lock her up. I think the movie would have been better if the title was different and the puppet wasn't alive, but instead it's revealed that there was a fungus or mold growing within it that affects people mentally (hallucinations, violent tendencies, changes in behaviour, brain damage, etc.). The serial killer and daughter would be affected because one was working on the puppet and the other had the puppet with her so often. The mother would still be affected but only experiencing hallucinations due to the limited time she was around the doll.

      True its not a Hollywood blockbuster but still entertaining with an interesting story.
      Pinocchios Revenge is in this way not a slasher movie or a killer doll movie but more a psychological Horrormovie.
      I really like the fact that the therapist is here not some useless character but instead is the first one who points out that the daughter needs to be committed while the mother refuses to accept that heir child has violent outbursts (For gods sake lady, your daughter bit someones ear!).

    My mom and I watched this on TV when UPN was still a thing...
    Also want to mention your joke about the Nanny being dressed like Chucky might have some grounds in the making of the film. Apparently the concept of the film *WAS* based on the original pitch of Child's Play where Andy was the killer the whole time and just creating the idea that the doll was possessed. Like they actually took the plot and it wasn't just a coincidence. So what we're looking at is what could have been Child's Play if they went with the first draft.
    As for the plot line with Vincent, a lot of people have theories that his kid was the one who was doing the original murders and he only killed his son out of madness to stop it. He took the fall because he knew no one would believe that his son did it and getting the chair would have ended his own shame of killing his child. And as for the mom seeing the doll attack her, the idea was that after Zoe hit her she was hallucinating and with her mind wanting to protect her own child, she kept seeing what she had always assumed was the cause of everything, that being the doll. Zoe was already shown to be a bully and having issues but her mother didn't want to see that she could be a monster. When she mentions Son of Sam, it was her deflecting blame on the actual murders like they did onto something everyone knows is bullshit. It's why the doctor at the end sort of pulls off on showing sympathy because he knows Zoe committed every act of violence but her mom is in denial over it, which was part of the problem.
    If any of that is true, it makes the movie so god damn heavy handed. There's the notion this is just the OG Child's Play idea ripped but it also comes off as a worse version of The Bad Seed. And need we mention that Pinocchio is just molded vinyl? Not even the best quality high gloss paint on wood shines like that on top of the damn thing bending more than Luffy in a Twister game.

    I feel like if we remove the scenes with Pinocchio actually moving around and being an evil puppet - while the movie as a whole still takes itself way too seriously, it at least makes it possible for us to take it seriously. It's that point where it breaks down and stops committing to the ambiguity of the premise where it actually breaks down.
    Setting things up so that some form of insidious force causes children to go on killing spree is among their peer group and ultimately ending with their parent "killing" them? That's pretty good. Throw in a couple of scenes where you establish that this is been going on for much longer, get rid of the actual puppet-killing, and you have something that at least works.
    The problem here is that the movie denies its own premise. And that's sad.

    • @varanid9
      @varanid9 3 года назад +3

      No, I don't see it that way at all; when we see Pinocchio move, we're seeing him through the eyes of the little girl, not how he actually is. • @varanid9

      Then, to add to the mystery, maybe the doll WAS possessed. Maybe unknown entities are influencing weak minds to commit horrible acts. Who would believe it? So, it goes on. As the film points out, there have been lots of actual cases where the killer claimed to have been told what to do by a face in the wall, a TV, an animal, a doll, etc. It seems obvious to me that the director didn't want us to know one way or the other for certain, and I like that; sometimes, answers ruin the story.
