It's really incredible to hear Stan's account of his impression of Steve's art being so impactful that he wanted to cheer for Spidey despite having written the story himself. I think we often underestimate the effect that art has on a story, or rather the emphasis it can have on the writing.
I love this specific Issue as well because it encompasses the fundamentals of Spider-Man, who he is, what he does, the rough road he goes through and the people he helps along said road.
Great vid! And thanks for the reminder to continue to read the spectacular run because I have only read the first 2 paperback volumes and kinda just stopped because I couldnt find other volumes at the bookstore
Thanks for watching! I feel that, I usually just go on amazon even though I prefer book stores. I swear Barnes and Nobles never restocks their comics section.
I absolutely love Chip's run of Spider-man. I grew up on Ultimate, then from Straczynski to Spencer, but Chip just fully understands the character of Peter.
It's amazing how this issue visits the different aspects of Spider-Man. We get the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man we all know and love, as well as the compassionate side and menacing side to him. Yet the story never loses what makes him Spider-Man.
the last bit with Stan's speech on that comic is why I like Spider-Man so much, as well as why I feel the character of Peter has been thrown in the bin for the last couple of years. It is important to have your heroes struggle, but it's also important to see them win. Peter Parker lives by the motto "with great power comes great responsibility", and that constantly puts him at odd with doing the hero thing and his personal life. He makes decisions, he makes mistakes, but he always learns from them and moves on. Unfortunately, the recent runs just refuse to acknowledge his growth. I used to like Dan Slott's works a lot but as time went on, things started to just repeat themselves, particularly in Peter's personal life. Lord knows OMD is a permanent blight in the character's history and we never fully recovered from that to this day (Nick Spencer was on the tracks, but he was cut short). Now when I look at Spider-Man I can only imagine what kind of shit cake the writers will throw at him so he can go back to the single broke student life.
You hit the nail right on the head. I don't get editorial doesn't want growth for Peter or at least not have everything suck. It's even weirder when you see DC give Wally west a break in the comics.
Zdarsky’s run on spider man is my absolute favorite (just barely beating renew you vows). And it’s so underrated, I’m glad it’s getting some much needed attention. Definitely going to hunt down more of the issues at some point.
The beginning issues were really rocky but man as it goes on, you realise Chip's true strength is writing character drama. It's no wonder Marvel immediately gave him work on Spider-man 's cousin series and my personal favourite superhero Daredevil.
Spider-Man is my favorite Marvel superhero. I have read some of the older comics, and they quite good. Few years years I bought The Amazing Spider-Man Back To Basics in trade paperback collection. It was written by Nick Spencer and drawn by Ryan Ottley. I really like the story presented in it. But I have never read The Spectacular Spider-Man comic written by Chip Zdarsky. It sound good though. Maybe I'll buy it some day.
Commenting to boost this video, but also I just love Spider-Man and this video, from the hype montage to Stan Lee's words, made me feel such a powerful wave of nostalgia and admiration for the wall crawler. More people need to see this video just to know how amazing he is, spectacular even, superior perhaps.
I grew up on spiderman. Saw every spiderman movie and animated shows. I'm hype for marvels spiderman 2 and across the spider verse 2 myself. Thanks for this video 👍
I’ve discovered that I have a hard time hearing Stan’s voice, since his passing. Never met the man, but it’s an emotional experience sometimes. Heck, two appearances by him after that really took me by surprise: Spider-Man PS5, and Into the Spider-verse. He’s the only non-related/friend that does it to me. I think it’s because how early I experienced him. Comics back in the 80’s, with Stan’s Soapbox… it was like the intro to the letters section at the end of the book. THEN came Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends. He intro’d every episode. A grown man with such a unique voice, talking about my favorite superhero. He had me at True Believers. Back on topic… you know what made Spidey’s stories interesting? Little things like his webshooters jamming and coating his hand in the middle of a fight. The time he was fighting Hobgoblin, and he webbed a lit pumpkin bomb to his hand, and he had to put it out in a toilet. Imagine the quippy dialogue. I’ll never forget it. That time he dislocated his own shoulder falling from the sky because he ran out of web fluid (does that happen anymore). I think that was Puma’s first appearance. He’s had some bad stories, for sure, but the character is ever enduring. I’m going to stop here… I could go on forever.😅
I really loved Life Story and didn't know there was other Zdarsky Spider-Man stories. Thanks for the recommendation. I was an Ultimate Spider-Man reader so have a lot of old stuff I get to read.
One of my favorite Spider-Man comics is actually part of Wark Waid's Daredevil run, where Daredevil teams up with Peter and Black Cat. Spiderman has recently gone through a breakup, and we get to see him be a vulnerable goofball, hoping to rebound with Cat while she and Daredevil bond.
This Comic Run hits hard. Peter Parker is just a guy & then it became one of favorite comic run even despite its short,it helps to guide what peter parker is. And why i love about spider-man he's just a guy who loves to help people who looks up to poor & stands up to the little guy.. At the end its a great story and simple as well. EDIT:Sorry for being emotional its just i love the character since i was born even ( weird huh..) its spidey that help me to never give up, even if i was tired, stress, lonely etc. spider-man is inspiration for generations to come.. THAT'S IT PEOPLE!!!
I love people like you who are just like me, I get so damn emotional over Peter and spidey. What he stands for, who he is, that humanity that he brings out in me every time.. I’ve stopped counting how many times I’ve cried or teared up while reading or watching Spider Man stories. He has a huge place in my heart, im so thankful for Stan Lee and Steve Ditko ❤
I have never heard of this comic series of Spider-Man this issue was how you should remind people of who, or rather what Spider-Man is. And the lack of dialog for the flashbacks on spidey hit harder than nesseray.
This is still my favourite Spider-Man comic issue ever and I'm glad there's finally a video highlighting its greatness. The best part for me was Peter saving the kid from getting arrested and helping him out with his homework, before he was sadly killed. This single issue made Chip Zdarsky my favourite comic writer.
Such a well made video, as much the editing is simple, it's so effective in capitalizing and expressing the emotions the comic book wanted to say. Bruh, your editing got me bawling as well as ending the video with Stan Lee's thoughts on the series just makes this video so special. Happy I'm subscribed to your channel and seeing you make quality content
Chip Zdarsky is very here and there for me. Most of the stuff from him i read is either horrible or amazing. His Peter is either a clown who nobody in their right mind can take seriously or he is actually Peter Parker - THE SPIDER-MAN. I suspect i must be because the editors are stupid, cause sometimes it feels like he has split personality or something.
Honestly speaking I just stick with the 90s, tbh it's the same thing with d.c. like until I officially join one of those companies I'm not going to read any of the garbage that's out now you know
I grew up with Dan Slott's run and Ultimate Peter parker. It had a lot of good moments. Especially between brand new day-700& superior. But man Zdarsky's short time with Spectacular and Spiderman life story was something special. I fell like Zdarsky and Slott(before Peter got Parker industries, that was more of a Ock thing) just understood Peter, he's a good person who feels the pressure of his situations but manages to pull through in the end and be kind to people when he can. Slott's issues 654 through 657 just got what made Spiderman likable and more importantly human. Same with Spencer's Amazing spider man but that one was a bit rough. It's hard seeing(cause I'm not wasting my money on that trash) Wells' run cause Peter and the FF are almost like family(issues 657&658) and Peter through a bunch of poor thought out (writing) decisions throws it away. It's disappointing really that not only Wells(and/or Editorial) for the time being has thrown out the Spencer's progress with Peter and MJ but made all the hardships , lessons, and connections Peter had during the first 3/4's of Slott's run in the gutter for some lame mystery box story full of coincidences and Peter being pathetic and pity.
I could never get into Ultimate like other people idk why. I know prefer BMB writing Ultimate Peter than 616 Peter. My only criticism with Chip Zdarsky is Life Story should've a bit longer lol. Thanks for watching btw
Chip Zdarsky is such a great writer I’ve been enjoying his daredevil run I have life story and spiders shadow I haven’t read his spectacular Spider-Man run yet I read the second volume and I’m reading the first almost done then I’ll read his and maybe one day get the trade for it as well wish he was writing the main series but until editorial gets their shit together or is replaced entirely he probably won’t do an amazing Spider-Man run anytime soon
@@MrToonMan yeah I swear but just saw gameplay footage of insomniacs spider-man 2 and it looks awesome glad in other forms of media we have dedicated fans who actually give a shit about Spider-Man
Okay THANK YOU! Superior was great. It gets way to much crap. It was an excellent run. (immediate sub) Edit: That issue by Zdarsky is one of my favourite issues of Spider-Man.
Funny that in my upbringing there was a Spider-Man carton, those old 70’s movies the Mego figure and the occasional comic at a newsstand. I loved Spider-Man. Still do. Haven’t read this Well’s run. But the bits I see where we see ourselves in Spider-Man is now the writer wants to see himself in Paul? Maybe that’s a reach. Why can’t Peter just have a home away from all the bad stuff with MJ? Paul along with the Mephisto shenanigans and the gross story with Gwen and Norman Osborn can now go in Spidey history as some of the biggest mistakes ever. The Tomes of evil like the Necronomicon. Bury them in a vault in a secret location never to be seen again.
hey man great video! I made a video tonight ready for tomorrow about this comic and I hadn't checked before hand if anyone else had done something on it. The “Marvel method” gave the artist a lot of say in the story, so Stan might not always have known how the conflict of the story would be resolved.
I love this specific Issue as well because it encompasses the fundamentals of Spider-Man, who he is, what he does, the rough road he goes through and the people he helps along said road.
The Fundamentals Of Spider-Man: Deeply flawed, but still doing the right thing.
