    Actually I think this is way more "green" than building all new cars. The positioning and use of existing structure, cutting no new holes etc and compartments is amazing.

    Just seeing this video now, but just wanted to say. This is my dream hobbyist project. Specifically an ev conversion of a classic porsche 911/912
    I want to build Johnny Silverhand's Porsche from Cyberpunk 2077. But as an EV, instead of the "future biofuel scifi weirdness". The design, paint, futuristic touches on a classic design, simply perfect.
    Hopefully i can start it in the next 10 years. Im starting as an electrician soon so ill definitely have the skills and training to approach doing to project diy.
    I know im a weirdo, but same reason i want to be an electrician, i find electricity fascinating. I find EVs cooler than ICE vehicles but i love a lot about classic cars.
    EDIT: I know some may dislike the idea of "defacing" or "ruining" a classic car, but honestly, its a never been done before project creating something from a popular piece of fiction. I think its worth it. And even though theyre collectible and "rare", theyre not that rare. Id attempt to get a salvage title so itd already be a "ruined" porsche.

      Shifting gears and revving an engine to maintain an ideal RPM is not what defines the driving experience. A transmission is a necessary evil because internal combustion engines are incredibly inefficient and have a very narrow power band.
      The driving experience comes from becoming one with the car, using a deft touch on the wheel to ease into turns and then nudge the pedal to accelerate through the apex, launching out of the curve like a shot.
      Having to dick around with shifting, even with an automatic actually takes away from the experience. There has never been a more pure driving experience than having a single speed with maximum torque available at all times.

      Well, 14 parsecs, of course. 😉

    • @bobbarker14
      @bobbarker14 8 месяцев назад +1

      The traditional Kessel Run is measured in Parsecs - a unit of distance. I’m assuming this is because the run is time limited and the distance one travels in the allotted time is one’s “score”.

    • @darwinskeeper421
      @darwinskeeper421 8 месяцев назад +3

      @@bobbarker14 I remember hearing once that George Lucas assumed that a major part of the Falcon's ability to go from world to world in the shortest time was related to the ability of its navigation computer to figure out the shortest way to fly between two worlds. That is supposedly why he originally the boast that the Falcon could make the run in less than 12 parsecs.
      In later stories (which Disney now calls "Legends", it was noted that the area around the planet Kessel was surrounded by several black holes, which cast gravity shadows into hyperspace. Ships need to travel a distance from these shadows to keep from being pulled out of hyperspace. Smuggling ships, with powerful hyperdrives can travel closer to these black holes and their gravity shadows and say in hyperspace. Thus Han was bragging that his hyperdrive was so fast that he could make the Kessel run very close to the black holes.

    Great kit and no doubt a useful. Quite exciting to think that as battery energy density continues to improve the options for an even more compact kit will arise. However as a 911 owner I am a bit conflicted, on one hand the small slippery shape of the 912 / 911 make them perfect for conversions, but the loss of the boxer engines is hard to take. Perhaps the engines could be made into a display piece?

    • @jonathantaylor1998
      @jonathantaylor1998 9 месяцев назад +6

      I'll stand to be corrected by Richard and his ECC Team, but I would imagine the car's original engine and componentry gets boxed up (no pun intended...! 🙄) and handed back over to the owner - that way, the car can be retro-converted back to ICE spec if required.

      There are already such shops sustained by subsidies by government in France. Those are specialized in conversions costing less than 10000 Euros suitable for cars which regular commoners can afford.
      This channel is dedicated to classical expensive cars conversions.
      I am not so sure why those generic car conversions shops do not develop yet in the UK or the USA. Maybe the difference is in lack of subsidies or need for higher market penetration of EVs in general to prove the commercial viability of those shops.

    reply: and that's Shawn's opinion - thank you Shawn. Anyone that is going to do this, such as myself for example, doesn't give a flying fu*k what the market wants. My cars are to drive, not as part of my portfolio. Thus the chasm appears to widen between opinions and...well opinions... something of note Shawn, you are aware than on a 911 nothing is added, cut or removed - so if anyone is "worried" they should just place their golden egg of a winterized numbers matching engine on a pallet covered up in the corner of the garage and use the car as an e911 and enjoy - time to sell? Sell the pallet with the car. EVERYONE IS HAPPY!! problem/concern solved.

    Brother, beautiful job as always.
    You used the keys words-experience and engineering. A winning combo.
    I'm sure you noticed I put experience before engineering.
    Your moto is definitely not-WHAT WE WIRE, TURNS TO FIRE!!!
    Cable management is key and keeping the high and low voltage separate is key.
    We deal with that for fire alarm life safety systems with high-low and power limited circuits.
    A lot easier to run wires than cables and convert everything to electro-mechanical systems with control and verification.
    Still looking forward to the Volvo 240 conversion you hopefully will do one of these years.

    In 1969 Porsche extended the chassis 6 to 7 cm longer for handling so if your 912 is a 68 then it has the shorter chassis. In fact I'm not sure they extended the 912 chassis as the engine was lighter although I think the 912 handled better because during the early years Germany didn't allow different width tires on the front and back. Remember the 912 was the first iteration after the 365's which were all fours.

    Great job! Imagine those 911 from the late 70s, 80s and early 90s converted to EV! I hope to see it one day! Keep pushing!

    I love this way of bringing classic shapes to the electric age and you are definietly on the right road. Unfortunately I am very sure that german legislation will not allow such substantial mods of cars. Seems I have to apply for a british passport ;-). Good luck for your endeavour.

    So this is the equivalent to adding the 6 cylinder engine to the 912 ‘back in the day’.

    I can't wait for the day that Diyers get a crack at electric "off the shelf" parts ... I have 87' Suburban of Mom's and a 67' El Camino that was Grandpa's, that I want to electrify and make right hand drive with su*c*de doors" ..I'm disabled and cant bend my leg enough to get in the car as left hand drive .I started restoring it, then I messed up and bought a house and land so now it sits :( BTW my lil town here has what's called the Texas Mile "One mile no limit" 2x a year and a few other shorter races .. so can we get some 200 mph race EV's please :)

    Are a lot of these conversions for London city residents?
    Having a classic is nice to own.
    But with London restrictions it’s not practical to use one of these gas guzzling beasts on the streets anymore in the City.
    Would this be a cheaper option if they already own the donor vehicle than having to purchase a standard EV.

      Most of our customers don’t live in London. 👍

      There are many more cost effective solutions for people who live in London. These are expensive classic cars with a bespoke professional conversion... so if you are already using the expression "cheaper option" I would say you are barking up the wrong tree! There are many alternative EV options for everyday transport.

    I've got a long term (Bought as a Californian import around 2001 ! ) 912 project, so the idea of an EV conversion is something I might consider. As for the differences, as well as the 4 speed gearbox, I know you could get the 912 with 3 dials on the dash - was this also a lower spec option on the 911s?

    Eek - I hope you’re changing out the torsion bars for larger diameter units. As the 912 engine was lighter than the 911 engine the torsion bars were different. If the mass of all your electrical stuff in back rivals that of the 911 engine then I suspect the torsion bars will be rather undersized. Similar for the front torsion bars if the front batteries weigh more than a full tank of fuel.

      Yep, new hollow torsion bars and shocks fitted front and rear according to the new corner weights. 👍

    Is there regen with this kit? Or is regen/OPD and braking somehow combined like in modern EVs? Or just coasting once gas pedal is lifted and then normal brake system behind brake pedal?

  • @1sostatic

    Being in the EV - PHEV, full electric and hydrogen industry. I would just say watch your protection circuits are correctly dailed in for failure mode current draw. .... a fire is not what you want. Look for your wire traps, where the narrow gauge wires are going and what threats they're under. In contact with abrasive surfaces and vibration, humidity (forming of Algae and other microbiologics), insulation weakening due to thermal cycling, material ingestion etc. Do these cars go through FUSA- even just basic safety inspection, REG85, REG100, VCA etc? .... its a nice idea ... but you do run risk of a crispy 912.

    • @ElectricClassicCars
      @ElectricClassicCars  9 месяцев назад

      Yep, protection circuits are correctly ‘dialed in’ as you call it. 😉👍 All is tested to Reg100 by VCA. 😆👌

      @@ElectricClassicCars You got a sub, happy new year 🎉🎊... glad you're looking into safe systems... so many forget to examine "fail states" . Some systems dont cut circuits in these modes because designers design under a falsehood that their stuff will never go wrong. So fail states can draw less current than what the protection has been set to (but enough to cause consequential damage) .... hence bad happens .
