  • Breast and Chest Lymphedema is a side effect after radiation and/or surgery. Compression is always a great treatment option (see my post from September 30, 2022 for more treatment ideas!), but Lymphatic Drainage for breast lymphedema is very important because of potential dense tissue, scar tissue, and radiation fibrosis.
When lymph nodes are removed during surgery, damaged through radiation therapy, or genetically someone has a dysfunction of the lymphatic system, then the body may have a hard time draining lymph fluid, which can result in lymphedema.
Here is a sequence we follow for manual lymphatic drainage for breast and chest lymphedema.
➡️ For a lymphatic drainage printable handout with step-by-step instructions and diagrams, found here: www.cancerreha...

Thank you! It’s been 8 years since treatment but i got stung by a yellow jacket and had an allergic reaction which really taxed my lymphatic system and caused swelling in my frankenbooby!

Thank you. I have a lump between my armpit and breast for several years now & it’s tender. I believe it’s a blocked lymph node. I was told it’s not in the breast and “probably musculoskeletal” so it didn’t come up in the mammogram but it doesn’t go away and that area looks inflamed as does my armpit.

I went to PT the other day and my therapist said you can get lymph that gets stuck and gets almost honey consistently. Sometimes it can turn hard leaving behind the minerals and fluids it's trying to move around the body. The best thing she said is to keep moving so the lymph stays fluid and not stuck. I have a lot of scaring in my chest from medical lines and now dealing with swelling from radiation/axillary node removal. So I totally get it. The first time I had any relief was digging holes in my garden! But at least now I'm in PT so I can learn how to manage the pain/swelling. Hope you can find some relief. If you can ask your oncologist for a PT referral for lymphedema that would probably help a lot ❤
