    Sarah, loved this deep sharing around failure, acceptance, moving forward- appreciate the realness, cause you’re not alone! Also love your 4step tool to gauge where you are with a project- and where the “ stuckness?” happened. Thanks. Yes, very weird and disappointing winter in Maine.

    Sarah, you amaze me with how much crafting you accomplish with your job, commuting, etc. You are always inspiring. Your lovely new embroidery books brought to my mind a quilt and embroidery designer that I think you may really enjoy. It is Yoko Saito. She also designs the most exquisite bags and little houses out of fabric. Her choice of fabrics are along the lines of Japanese quilting fabric, also Diamond Textiles, very textural, earthy, neutral tones and colors. Her embroidery designs are far and wide. I hope you take a look at her work if you are not familiar with it. She has several books. I am steadily working on a knitted sweater for my husband, cross stitching, making a historical doll from a Gail Wilson Designs kit, and am itching to get back to some quilting. Seeing yours made the itch stronger. Soon, soon.

    Loved seeing that beautiful waffle on mother's Poppy trail plate. I always loved those dishes. I still use mother's waffle iron from 75 years ago. It was a wedding gift. Great to see Mom's Featherweight being used too. Lovely quilts.

      Aw...right? That metlox poppy china is the best. This is a set my mum secured for me over eBay and I love it. The featherweight has been a quilting game changer and I cherish it. Rob will be servicing her up soon with a a good oiling. I'm so grateful you made that happen for me.

    As is often the case when I watch your vlogs, I drooled more than once. The slo-mo syrup on the waffles and raspberries... oh my, seriously yummy! And your decision to rip back and move forward with the Seaweed Green in your Yell is outstanding - that colour is PERFECT. I really like using a Hera marker, maybe that would suit you too? Also, that single quilt block is so lovely, why not frame it or use as a wall hanging, respect all your hard work on it! IMHO😂

    Thank you for sharing your 'failures' which (I think) should be more accurately called learning studies. There is such value in setting things aside, giving the time and space needed for creative work. For marking quilting lines, I also started out with blue tape, used chalk, and finally now use a very dull butter knife and quilting ruler to mark the fabric with an indent path.

    It’s always such a pleasure to see what you’ve been up to. When I was making my 3 or 4 th quilt I used Taylor’s chalk for the lines. It was a yellow chalk on a cream and neutral browns piece. It didn’t come off. I was so bummed. Though since it was for me I just excepted my mistake and it wasn’t too obvious unless you looked close. I’ve washed the quilt a few times and I swear to this day I can still see some color. (This was probably 7 years ago). I should try oxyclean!!

    Glad you resolved the chalk problem to a satisfactory conclusion. If you get brave and choose to use chalk again sometime.., a tip …. I use white school chalk. I snap it several times for a sharper edge. I use a soft plastic surgical scrub brush to rub it off. Love your videos, especially how you talk about your creative process in making your projects. So love all of this, Sarah…that sunrise over the lake😁🌞. And the waffle iron! I had not seen one like that before-hot hot do you keep the water underneath? Boiling? Or was that just a spacer underneath?
    And it is not a failure to choose to spend your time on projects that bring you joy. We don’t have to accomplish everything to succeed 😂. I’m glad you only ripped back the green part of your Yell-when I saw the clip of you ripping back I thought you were taking out the whole thing!! Hope you continue to enjoy this transitional season❤

      Be cautious with the Frixion pens!!! I’ve read so many accounts of people who live in colder climates that see the lines come back in the cold. Ironing doesn’t fully erase them, so be careful! If you have a Hera marker, give that a try before the Frixion pens.

    Hi Sarah! Thanks for sharing your tip for ripping back knitting by picking up stitches on a needle back before the “mistake”…..I’d never seen that before! I made my one and only lace shawl about 8 years ago, and vowed I’d never do lace knitting again, the project shook me to my core, and had me questioning my very intelligence and sensibility! I had to rip it back so many times, the yarn got ruined, I bought a new skein, and forged forth. It was put on the shelf intermittently, and I eventually finished it. It was painful. I can relate to the feelings of failure you talk about….I did make peace with the project finally, and gave myself grace that perhaps my creative brain just did not do well with this type of patterning, and I moved on to many other knit projects happily! Learning knitting without my mentors (my grandmother and my mother who have passed on years ago) hasn’t been so easy, even with RUclips tutorials we have available to us, the learning can be an isolating journey in some ways! Love your content, and your videos are lovely. Happy crafting!

    • @FiberTrek
      @FiberTrek  4 месяца назад +1

      Egad! Lace! That is a painful experience...ripping back! I appreciate your poignant thought about mentors and the enriching experience that comes from working with a person especially a family member. RUclips just doesn't capture that wisdom. Thank you for sharing and happy crafting right back at ya!

    Have you tried paper piecing for the star block. Very simple but exact. Don’t give up. You need to get the straight stitch throat plate for your machine. Did you use a walking foot. Better to eyeball quilting lines using the pattern as a guide. Quilting small areas at a time. Practice. You’ll get there. I send mine off to be done. lol.

      It wasn't tailors chalk nor a clover product...I don't have the brand in front of me. I imagine I put it on too heavy and really gave it a good "mark" ;). I won't use it again but may experiment with clover tailor's chalk.

    Nice episode. I never look at my "unfortunate" projects as failures...they've all been teaching moments so when I do not achieve the result I was looking for, I see it as a lesson and know to try something new rather than seeing it as a failed project. The Nutiden sweater looks nice...not sure if you worked with Nutiden by itself before, it does tend to grow when wet blocked. I had to redo pullover sleeves as they grew 6 inches longer after I wet blocked the sweater. If I knit Nutiden yarn with mohair then this doesn't happen but the look is obviously different. I asked this question on your previous episode but I was wondering if you have a few seconds to let me know what pattern sweater you are wearing in this episode (you were wearing it in the previous episode as well)...I went to watch a few other episodes that I had missed to see if you had mentioned the pattern but I didn't find it. I bought a gorgeous undyed brown wool from Great Bay Wool Works located in New Hamphire and your sweater is the perfect pattern I want to use for this yarn. Thanks so much for your help and ispiration. Peace & Blessings!
