The most difficult Metallica riff from each album (with tabs)

- Hello people! I'm a guitar player from Romania and a huge Metallica nerd. In this video I'll be playing the hardest guitar riff from each album, trying to recreate the guitar tone as well as possible and explaining what is particularly difficult about each one of them. For people offended about the St.Anger and Lulu joke in the video please keep in mind that it was all just for comedic purpose. I actually enjoy St.Anger every once in a while and I know Lulu is not a Metallica album and it just features Metallica. Enjoy the video friends!
I do not own the rights to any of the songs.

Fight Fire with Fire is by far the Hardest on Lightning.
dyers eve on Justice for All is the hardest song to play
@@marq5559 That's a tricky one too.
I find Creeping Death to be one of the faster songs I can play, definitely not hardest riff on the album, I would agree with Fight Fire with Fire only bc I cant speed alternate pick for my life
@@marq5559 I can play that easily don't afraid your self
I can play ffwf , dyers Eve, Disposible Heroes easily but I can't play Blackened and Master
Damage Inc is so hard that the guy himself couldn´t play it even 80% accurate
For damage inc with that riff I say screw it imma gallop not use broken gallop because that riff is harder than damage inc solo which is rare for music
It's my favorite riff to play lol
It is an awkward riff, but at least play it with E as bass note, this had A as bass note, completely off
The only time I can play it accurately is when I’m playing it slowed tf down😂
he also couldn’t play the second riff in metal militia
What’s funny is as someone who’s played guitar on and off for 14 years untrained, I can play every riff to every Metallica song, but god damn, put a Beatles song in front of me and I might as well be trying to order breakfast in Finland...
Tfw when you only play metal songs, I can relate
Yeah same
I can play master of puppets but goddammit I can't play chords like the master of puppets intro is easier for me than wonderwall
Ya i can play a difficult song on drums like dyers eve but i always screw up on simpler stuff like boulevard of broken dreams or something lol
syötkö täällä tai otatko mukaana?
0:11 Kill Em’ All
1:19 Ride The Lightning
2:21 Master Of Puppets
3:49 And Justice For All
4:35 Black Album
5:33 Load/Reload
6:49 St. Anger
7:06 😂
7:09 Death Magnetic
8:54 Hardwired to Self Destruct
now imagine playing those riffs while you sing 💀
yuup I do that some of them are very hard in that way especially battery
I swear Creeping Death is the easiest riff on Lightning, idk if it’s because I never had trouble with downpicking or the fact that you don’t really need to move your left hand much. But I’d say the spider riff on Ride The Lightning is the hardest. It’s so awkward.
yeah I can agree to some extent, but because I started off playing lead guitar that riff doesn't bother me that much, thanks for the feedback!
But creeping death has the hardest solo in the album it’s like tornado of souls it’s has insanely easy riffs but very difficult solos
Whenever I try to play this song my wrist feels like it’s gonna fall off
@@prodfossil tbh I probably got so used to downpicking because I never uppicked on Guitar Hero before I got a guitar so I thought the same way so downpicking was second nature to me
@@prodfossil everyone learning metallica for the first time goes through that trust me mate! xD
I wish I could play without a cable
Yeah, what's up with that? 😐 Not even a short cable for a wireless connection.
@@nckhed He probably recorded him playing and then recorded the video
there is wireless amplification systems i believe
@@PadawanIan But the transmitter still needs to be plugged into the guitar, his just isn't plugged in period
The video is mimed most likely
Even MetallicA self say that "the Frayed Ends of Sanity" is the most complicated song they have ever written. So... I'll stick with that one!
Yes, this.
Riff after 4:00 and under-solo riff is insane!
First and main riff into blackened are harder to play, but I completely agree that Frayed is the most sonically sound and Musically intricate song ever written by Metallica.
I guess the are talking about the rythm or messure changes, not about guitar tecnique.
Frayed is poorly structured, unpopular opinion but it’s on of my least favorite Metallica songs
The most dificulty song of metallica:
The four horsemen
Reason: dave mustaine.
(only joke.)
The most easiest songs of Metallica
1 some kind of monster it’s legit just 0 3 5 for most of the song I’m not joking check the tabs on it
2 unnamed feeling because it’s slow
3 shoot me again because it’s only a few notes
4 enter sandman it’s ridiculous easy the only challenge is the solo
5 to live is to die it’s the slowest song from metalica history
To live is to die is so good though even though it’s slow AJFA is just a masterpiece
Truth hurts...
Metal Militia is Mustaine tho
@@Mrnoobestreturns the solo doesn’t seem that hard once you learn it imo
Dyers Eve is easily the hardest song on AJFA if not metallica song in general
Definitely hard on drums but on guitar the speed fools you into thinking that it's hard. The tail of the blackened main riff is harder to get consistent at than the entire dyers eve song.
@@AllAboutMetallicaGuitar i agree with you, at least for me dyers Eve wasn't to difficult, but blackened it's another history
I would say Dyers eves solo isn’t the hardest on that album, IMO shortest straw is the most difficult thing Kirk ever wrote
@@AllAboutMetallicaGuitar well AJFA is my favourite metalica album and I know what is the hardest and easiest song
Easiest song is to live is to die
Hardest song is obviously Dyers eve for riffs
hardest solo is shortest straw
Easiest solos is One
I never found Dyers Eve difficult but blackened I still struggle with
I love how you remembered the unmuted hit at 2:04 at the beginning of that riff when it's played for the third time. So many people miss that little detail.
haha thanks man! I had to look for it cause I've been playing it like that for so long I forgot that I do that
That’s what that is. Thanks
I'm glad I've done this only by memory
YES!!!! And also, when they're ending the song, the second to last chord is actually frets 2 and 5 for the power chord, not 2 and 4.
@@mg682I’m pretty certain that’s only for the live version
What I believe has the most difficult riffs of each album
Metal Militia
Fight Fire With Fire
Damage Inc.
Dyers Eve (or Frayed Ends)
Through the Never
Thorn Within has a underrated (not difficult) riff
Fuel
St Anger
That Was Just Your Life (or B,B,& S)
Am I Savage (harmonics)
It's not that Lulu has a difficult riff, the difficult part is listening to the songs.
The St. Anger bit got me hahah, but as someone who enjoys St. Anger just as much as other albums, I can say that the hardest song on it would probably be All Within my Hands, especially if you're a maniac and try to downpick it like James does. Great video tho :D
To be fair St anger is hard to like it taken me years to like the songs on it
I say the hardest riff for that album is sweet amber
And the easiest riff being some kind of monster
Fun fact some kind of monster is metalica most easiest song ever created
@@Mrnoobestreturns Yeah it kind of depends on what other genres you like, as a fan of Nu metal, I instantly liked St Anger and the drums never bothered me for some reason. But I agree, Sweet amber is quite tricky, but I still stand by All Within my Hands being the hardest song in the Metallica catalogue to downpick. Harder than Master and harder than Blackened. And yes, this oppinion comes from a guitar player
I'd like St. Anger way more if it were produced properly and that fucking snare was fixed but the heaviness of the album and the lyrical content I do enjoy. Plus the guitar parts are great too but, personally I think frantic is the hardest song off the album. I didn't really have much trouble with all within my hands. Although, in Kirk's case, it's some kind of monster
@@dougwalker5807 a fan did that ruclips.net/video/h99nhdNnfm8/видео.html
And I think it lost the magic
First off creators put things there for a reason
So replacing the snare and reworking the tone just removed what makes St anger a unique album no one has ever heard of before
@@Mrnoobestreturns thank you but I've seen this multiple times. This is what I was referring to
7:58 also remember that James also sings while playing that riff!!
that's a very good point!
And this is absolutely unbelievable
a fucking maniac, that's what he is
*cracks knuckles and inserts standard Megadeth joke here*
This riff is not THAT challenging, it's about 7.5/10 as far as Metallica riff difficulty goes. What's really hard to sing over while keeping time is Fight Fire With Fire, as the entire main riff is super fast AND syncopated (off-beat). Remember that when playing live and singing, James often skips notes, economy-picks and alternate-picks entire parts of the song. Actually, Kirk is not credited enough for almost always playing the full riffs while James is singing.
Another one that's kinda tricky to play and sing is Eye of The Beholder - same reason, the chorus riff is syncopated.
So we're gonna act like Through The Never or The Struggle Within werent ther hardest songs off The Black Album huh?
Through the never has fast downpicking tho
Through the never is like master of puppets lite (main riff)
The Struggle Within riff right after the solo, that's pretty hard.
@@gamma7824 if you play along to a live version for example from Live Shit, then yeah it does.
through the never, the main riff's 1-2-3 changes are fucking brutal to get clean
Mad respect, I play for half a year myself, I really wish I had your skill, man
thank you man, you'll get there for sure just keep at it, if you love what you play the right thing will happen! \m/

I loved sitting here watching this. Awesome!
Dude your a legend keep it up!
forgot to mention you killed it bro its good to see the young gen taking an interest in classic awesome thrash metal
haha thank you so much man! means a lot! 🤘
For Kill 'Em All I would have put the Four Horsemen.
The palm muting at the beginning is hard to get right, the pinch harmonic is placed in a difficult spot, and the Sweet Home Alabama bridge is kinda hard.
That Sweet Home Alabama riff confused me for a long time.
Julien MENARD makes nice lessons on Metallica songs and Sweet Home Alabama riff is quite easy and fun, easier than how Skynyrd Lynyrd plays it
good vid bro keep going im subbing
thank you so much!
Master Of Puppets isn’t 220bpm, it’s 212
bruh where is ur jack cable
I think on the black ablum, through the never is the hardest for the downpicking
Yes, sire
Black album is hard to find the hardest because nearly every song is easy there
I do know the most easiest for that album it’s enter sandman
@Rock'n'LokoT alternate picking wouldn't be doing it the correct way. It won't sound right either.
I know it is but it’s a lot like a master of puppets riff
Very cool vid!🤘🤘
Amazing once again Mate
thanks a lot mate! 🤘
Blackened is their best riff. That one is just SICK. We have Jason to thank for it too!
hell yeah we do!
Best chanel for metalheads
Luv it
This man deserves more subs.
This is sick dude I’ve been covering a lot of Metallica songs on drums recently. Goddamn they are so iconic.!!
Youre picking like James Hetfield YOURE A GENIUS
yeaaah buddy!
@@AllAboutMetallicaGuitar I picked that way for decades before ultimately switching to a more traditional style of pick hold. The Hetfield hold was causing me to rip the flesh off the side of my middle finger after a set or so. Such a great hold for those machine gun gallops, though.... Plus, it looks badass.
@@SvenSvensvensonsson I developed calluses on the side of my finger so I don't really have that problem but I see how that can hurt
@@SvenSvensvensonsson I pick like him to and I can agree, I use to have to put tape on the sides of my fingers because it would rip my fingers apart
@@thanosquill5542 yeah. That’s why I stopped. I still would naturally catch myself doing it on some fast mutes or gallops for a while after I stopped regularly strumming like that, but at this point I’ve washed it out of my muscle memory, all together. I think his secret is he holds his pick perpendicular to the strings, so his fingers aren’t really coming in contact with the strings. I read an interview a long time ago where he explained why he picks so uniquely. He said it all stems from how he holds pens; with his thumb, index and middle finger.
I'd say fight fire is more difficult from ride the lightning, mainly the prechorus riff. It's just a weird rhythm to play.
trapped under ice is tough too
Awesome efforts man...!!
thank you so much!
well done!🤘🏾
On my opinion, you should add Disposable heroes to your list. The tempo of this song and the accuracy of the performance really make you tense up when playing it.
Black Album: "Through the never". That is pretty hard to play tight. At least I recall my forarm being pretty pumped up on that song, especially when playing backing riff for Kirk's solo. But maybe it was because I had already played 4½ albums before that 🤣
When I started to play guitar a thousand years ago, my first tablature book was MoP. That was also the first song I learnt to play completely, without Kirk's fast solo. I just practised and practised, usually 6-8 hours a day. I was 15 years old...almost 16 atm. Then about year later I played all five of their CD's in a row. I never learnt all songs completely, but most of them and many of the solos too...and at least some part from every song. Of course I wasn't that good at first, but maybe 6 months later I was actually pretty good already, and most people didn't believe that I had only played about 18 months. Well, it was only 18 months, but I still had more practise time, than most of the guys, who had played 3-4 even 5 years.
Love the tone with the guitar
ay thanks man!
Cool vid!
King nothing is such an underrated song. It’s not hard, it’s just badass
Bruh Creeping Death was the 2nd Metallica riff I learned after sandman
Great job!
Wow Răducu! You rock!!!🤘
You should have played Some Kind of Monster from St. Anger. The notes in between fucked Kirk for real.
Oooo, very good. I would love to see a Megadeth version of this!
I think St Anger gets a lot of flak for what it is (never listened to Lulu so can’t say) but that being said, the laughing edit you put over both albums was funny af and made me laugh out loud pretty hard. And the video overall was pretty damn good. Fucking bravo
Great vid, ur also a killer player
thank you so much!
We should appreciate tho how he played Blackened all downpicking and holding the pick the way James does
haha thanks man! I do that to get the attack I need since James is so heavy-handed
@@AllAboutMetallicaGuitar but every other bar you should be going down a tritone instead of up all the time, not sure if that's intentional?
Creeping death you have to downpick the entire song, but I personally think Ride the Lightning is a bit harder, just because of the bridge riff. Good stuff! Keep thrashing!
Because mustaine...
Fight fire with fire is even harder
Great job
good tone bro
My man butchered St. Anger
Also hardest song on that album is either All Within My Hands or Invisible Kid
The kick ass riff that Kirk wrote in my apocalypse is hard af imo, palm muting, downpicking, harmonics
Good video and excellent playing!! Although I would say Dyers Eve is the hardest song on Justice.
King Nothing is so good, especially with your tone, jeeez
Creeping death can be difficult at first but it’s more “finicky” if anything. Once you learn the verse riff properly, it’s much easier. Definitely a contender though
Wow, saying fuck you to St. Anger. Such a true metalhead... Really? Still?

about 4 years, self taught
@@AllAboutMetallicaGuitar nice job!

I'd argue Fight Fire With Fire bridge of whatever between the main riff sections are harder than Creeping Death. But also that's played only a few time in the song while Creeping Death's riff requires a lot of stamina :D
Excellent
I don’t care how long it takes me to mater that damage inc sequence. The riff is badass and I will make it mine some day
he is so good even though his guitar isnt even plugged in
Gotta agree on dyers eve being a pain in the ass
Hey man you‘re on a good way. After playing guitar and especially Metallica songs for 16 years, 15 minutes of warm up and those riffs come out naturally. Practise rhythmic precision, power, authority and especially consistency in your picking.
Holy moly I didn't realize that the tail of the That Was Just Your Life riff was downpicked...
That makes the song a lot harder.
(also, I think you were playing an F# instead of an F in the intro and main riff)
yeah downpicking that separates the notes better, there is a part in the making of death magnetic where James talks about it
Im having a harder time playing the alternate picking descending chromatic chords in ride the lighting and the solo section rhythm than creeping death
Not that hard, learn spider chords and it’s just a slight challenge to keep clean
M Thang Jameson yea but learning that riff it sticks to you. Take a break from downpicking you have to sort of re learn it get all your stamina back. And creeping death is annoying just repeatedly taking your palm on and off while down picking.
“Creeping Death is difficult”
Also Creeping Death: eeEeeEeEeeEe…
bruh
as a Guitarist who has learned Blackened, Im still struggling with my galloping, Downpicking and TIming at the same time everytime I play it
I remember back a couple of years when i would practice non stop i could load up master of puppets on youtube and play it at 1.25 speed with all down picks, now sadly im old and have wrist pains from hard jobs back then, god i miss my fast downstrokes
really sorry to hear that man, hope you still play with as much passion though!
When the st. anger appeared and that laughing noise came on I was dying also I was wondering what song you were gonna pick for the black album cuz they ain’t that hard but god that failed was a god choice
>St. Anger and Lulu skipped
>Not saying every song is hard to play as it is hard to listen too
😔
I would skip load and reload too
-Hit the Lights
-Fight Fire with Fire
-Master of Puppets
-Blackened
-Nothing else matters (full arpegio intro)
I think the verse riff off of Master Of Puppets is like 4/4, then 7/8 (4/8 + 3/8 at the end). It's tricky at first, but not as much when you get used to
Aside from some riffs played wrong, it was a fun compilation. Always fun geeking with fellow Metallica brothers/sisters! 😍
That's exactly why I make videos! I don't really have people I can go full nerd mode with about Metallica so this is my outlet. 🤘

@@nybakg so sick to hear man! I'm 21 and most of my metal friends went on to the new djenty stuff while I'm going backwards towards danzig and Sabbath 😂
@@AllAboutMetallicaGuitar Go both ways 😂it'll make you a better player
Dyers in my opinion is the most difficult Metallica song in general. It's just fast and oddly structured.
What I found when I was re-recording St. Anger, was that the hardest riff to get right on the album was the intro build-up of St. Anger. I'm sure you know from recording this video, saying you can play the riff is easy, recording it is hard. Having to make sure you're palm-muting in the right spot, lifting off to accent the notes at the right time, hitting every single downpick because if you miss one, it's over. None of the riffs on the album were hard, but playing some of them perfectly was. :P
Dyer's Eve and either shortest straw /beholder / frayed ends ..because they're too long..i agree mop damage inc and battery are also challenging. Trapped under ice and fight fire with fire are bad ass thrash riffs.
On ride The lightning The most difficoult song is trapped Under Ice
St. Anger and Lulu😂😂
foarte bine perfomat, excelent.

@@MNorris0783 I wish I had one, just fucked up lol
My take on this
Kill Em All: Jump in the Fire, main riff
Don't know what it is about this one but it always makes me cramp up by the end of the song so stamina wise it's tough for me
RTL: Creeping Death, main riff
Yeah if you're downpicking this thing the whole way, mad respect.
MOP: Disposable Heroes, main riff
Lot of tough riffs on MOP but the downpicking rhythm in Disposable is a pain in the ass (or wrist)
AJFA: Blackned, main riff
I actually find Dyers Eve to be pretty easy (aside from the solo) Blackned on the other hand is probably the most difficult Tallica' riff for me
Black Album: Nothing Else Matters, the whole thing
It's true that the Black Album doesn't have the most complex riffs but in terms of songs, Nothing is easily the hardest
Load/Reload: idk/Where the Wild Things Are, again the whole song
Nothing hard off Load but Where the Wild Things Are is something else imo (Unforgiven II gets an honourable mention)
Stanger: Title Track, main riff
The timing on this one is always a problem for me, could probably get it down with more practice
Death Magnetic: That Was Just Your Life, main riff
For added challenge try singing while you play this riff :)
HWTSD: Moth Into Flame, main riff
Again difficult timing.
I think the second riff from Fight Fire with Fire is the most difficult riff to play of all Metallica songs, but nice video
Noice man, yet St Anger is one of my favourite albums ever 😂

mocking st. anger but then also saying spit out the bone is the best metallica song since blackened 💀 that’s a hot take if i ever saw one.
WDYM, Spit out the bone is a banger.
Creeping death is literally the first riff i ever learned, idk why people say its hard, I think fight fire with fire is way more fitting for the hardest riff of RTL.
