This is beautiful...endgrain has depth and your techniques are flawless...like using a glue that allows the wood to expend and contract. I wish I had known that before.
Lovely board, I like the end grain and the 3 D effect of it raised out of the frame. FWIW the pieces were set up across the board, the bottom right hand square is white, H1
I'm just here to watch because I'm looking toake a chess board for my daughter. I haven't done anything with wood since shop class in high school. This is lovely work🌹
That's a nice looking board. Have been trying to make a gift for a friend that has everything and you gave me a perfect idea. Thank you for sharing. GW
Very nice, but now it needs a separate case to store the pieces in that matches it. I owe my daughter a chess board too, so another really handy video - thanks for taking the time to make it.
nice....like the End-grain idea. didn't think of that. made a board before..you have nice machines/tools. I actually just went ahead and bought a couple boards from House of Staunton, clearance for like 50 bucks each...Can't make them for that. but would like to make a nice one some day...unique one...and this End Grain idea might be the way to go
Humm, this is supposed to be a chessboard but it's not. Where are the coordinates, the letters and the alphabets? Not hating but it's an incomplete project. Nice job from a no chess player BTW.
Agreed, theirs an exquisite elegance to the glass pieces on the wood board, and I love the board itself although, maybe rounding off those edges on the boarder would have been a nice touch and also, if it was me, I would have put a little more craftsmanship into the legs, just to give it a more raised look. Man I gotta get me a wood router!!!!
love that u can see the grain, u don't see that alot... since u have experience, would it be a good idea if I wanted to use a long metal wire, heat it up and use it to burn in and separate all the individual squares?
So are you saying you would just have one big board and use the wire burning method to make the grid pattern? I don't see any reason why that wouldn't work.
That`s a beautiful board and would be at home in any high end chess set, for that reason i think you should make a 4 inches king set of pieces to go with that.
Nice job... love it. FYI... when setting up the pieces, each player should have their righthand rook on a white square. ie. Your board needs to be rotated 90 degrees. :)
Great job on the board. Wish I had the skill and tools to do that. I have an old board that I made in high school that needs a new edge around it. Just don't have tools to get it done.
Thanks Tony! Have you looked to see if your area has a Maker Space somewhere? You could probably build a new edge easily and have every tool you can imagine at your fingertips.
I would say hold the high gloss lacker, I hate playing on shinny boards, very distracting - actually ignore me, board looks truly stunning...great job!!
It looks stunning with the glass pieces on it though! You might be on to something on ease of use though. There is a balance (hence staunton style in general)
Thanks Damon! That is black walnut and ash. My family actually has a small tree farm so all of my lumber comes from trees that my Grandfathers planted. ruclips.net/video/smBRsF9NTAI/видео.html
Man, I've had the opposite experience with lacquer as far as Not being forgiving. Perhaps I should try brushing it. I always spray it, and I find any imperfections or uneven spraying shows up. Board looks great btw.
Can you please tell me how did you make the 'soft' rounding of the edges of the top surface of the chessboard? And also, what kind of varnish did you use for the surface?
will an end-grain board not collapse if the wood expands or or shrinks? or does it depend on the dryness of the wood as well as the wood species? I am going to build a board myself and am deciding if just to follow the grain.
You definitely want the wood to be dry. Technically, this style should be stronger because everything is glued edge grain to edge grain. If you go the other direction, you end up with lots of end grain to end grain joints, which isn't very strong.
amazing work, using your design as reference to make one for my sister (newbie here). What is that glue you used? Can’t seem to find info on it. Is it some sort of silicone?
I don't remember for sure, so I'll take some guesses. The frame is probably 5/8 thick, and the board is probably 1" or more. Since the board sits into the frame half-way, we are probably talking about 1 to 1-1/4 overall thickness.
Just curious. Was there a reason that you routed the recess into the frame after assembling? Why did you not route before assembly? I am newish to finer woodworking and looking for more tips and tricks. Nice chess board and thanks for the video.
Beautiful chess board! I also enjoyed watching your process. Your videos are very well made. FWIW: the chess pieces at the end clip are set up on the wrong edge of the board. The dark square of home row (a1 or h8 in chess notation) should be on the left side of the board with a rook. I'm gonna go check out some more of your videos. thanks!
Haha, thanks for the heads up. My wife and I actually looked up how to set them up because it's been a long time since I played and I didn't want to look dumb. I didn't realize there was actually a front and back to a chess board.
Gunflint Designs lol...I here ya! it's a little pet peeve of mine in TV and movies to see if they set up the board properly. most set the pieces in the correct sequence on the board, but have the board turned 1/4. this isn't a chess video, it's a wood working video, and u rocked it!
Beautiful board! I was slightly annoyed that you set the chess board up wrong though. Black square is always on the left corner. Queen goes on her own color.
Thanks Pedro. I'm a builder, not a chess player so I had no idea that there was a front and back to a chess board. I have had lots of people point this out to me since I posed this video... some of them weren't as nice about it as you.
I’ll tell you what I think. I think I’m going to quit woodworking. I should just pick up my hot tar mop like I used to. It seems that roofing was the only thing I was good at. It’s been so long, I’d probably fail at that too. Man, I suck at everything. Beautiful chessboard 👍🏼
I'm not worried about it, but because I'm curious I've just had it sitting out and check it every week or so. It's been 6 months and is still completely flat and no cracks.
This is beautiful...endgrain has depth and your techniques are flawless...like using a glue that allows the wood to expend and contract. I wish I had known that before.
What happens if you dont? (Use wood expanding glue)
Great job. Like how you used the rabbeting bit to recess the board into the frame.
Lovely board, I like the end grain and the 3 D effect of it raised out of the frame.
FWIW the pieces were set up across the board, the bottom right hand square is white, H1
Stunning man. Absolutely stunning.

That's a nice looking board. Have been trying to make a gift for a friend that has everything and you gave me a perfect idea. Thank you for sharing. GW
Thanks Guy, I'm glad I could help!
I like the final outcome
Absolutely marvelous! I bet your friend's dad loved it. Thanks for the inspiration.
Lol marble ous
Very nice job !!! I love its simplicity and overall gorgeous finish. Well done my friend . 👍
Started looking at chess stuff after watching Netflix's The Queen's Gambit. Top Job brother!
Love it man. Like all of your projects, it’s awesome.
Thanks Wesley!
Great work, currently working on a board for my granddaughter, great tips 👍
Very nice, but now it needs a separate case to store the pieces in that matches it. I owe my daughter a chess board too, so another really handy video - thanks for taking the time to make it.
Thanks Matt! I'm sure your daughter will cherish a chess board made for her by her dad!
That’s a beautiful board.
Love the finish
Stunning!
Love the board
Beautiful well done
Very simple and beautiful, thanks
Beautiful board
This is beautiful. Thank you for posting this video, I enjoyed watching your work and more importantly your comments.
looks great, really nice finish.
Thank you!
Love it! That looks fantastic!
I think it looks great!
Looks great!

FYI, set up the chess board with a white square in the right corner. You set it up sideways, and yes, it makes a big difference.
Good info. Someone already pointed that out to me. I don't play chess myself, so I never had a reason to know that before.
Not like you can't rotate the board 90 degrees or anything...
It is just a good tip in case he, or anyone watching, ever does another one with the alphanumeric grid references carved in.
"Light at bottom right". That's how I remember. I think I'll attempt this project myself, only with much worse results.
Humm, this is supposed to be a chessboard but it's not. Where are the coordinates, the letters and the alphabets? Not hating but it's an incomplete project. Nice job from a no chess player BTW.
Great work! When I eventually get set up, that's my first project; a Chess board. I like your design!
Thanks!
That is a very nice chessboard. I hope that you love doing woodwork.
Great video, Mark! The drum sander looks key. I really like the drill press branding tip.
Thanks Scott! I really like using that brand, it looks cool and is fun to use.
Great job!
Very well done work sir 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great job man!!
Beautiful Work!!
Thank you Marty!
Bonito. Lástima que hayas colocado mal las piezas en el tablero. Juegas tú ajedrez??!
I said "wow when i saw the thumbnail! I didn't think I'd like the glass on wood either but it's really amazing
Very cool!! I'm making an end grain chess set right now
Awesome! I'd love to see how it turns out.
Gunflint Designs unfortunately I won't have a video on it but once it's done I'll have photos on my Instagram account @jtwoodworks
Beautiful !!!
Very cool. Nice job

So are you saying you would just have one big board and use the wire burning method to make the grid pattern? I don't see any reason why that wouldn't work.
Beautiful.
Coordinates makes it look a lot more elegant
in my opinion.
First time in your chanel. I loved it! I've learned about making this board. Congratulations and thank you for sharing your knowledge!
You're welcome, I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Nice video! I have a freind asking for a chess board for christmas, but I've never done one so this helped give me some ideas. Thanks :)
Very nice!
That`s a beautiful board and would be at home in any high end chess set, for that reason i think you should make a 4 inches king set of pieces to go with that.
Thanks!
Beautiful job!
Fantastic
Great work. Just a suggestion... the white case must be at the right (6:24). Thanks for the video.Regards from Brazil.
Thanks for the heads up Marcelo. You can tell I am just a builder and not much of a chess player!
Great work
Love it, nice design!
I like it!!! good job.
Nice job... love it. FYI... when setting up the pieces, each player should have their righthand rook on a white square. ie. Your board needs to be rotated 90 degrees. :)
beautifullly made
Thank you Anne!
Gunflint Designs thanks for the info. Nothing like that around here .
Field A1 (lower left corner) should be dark. You have to turn the board 90°.
Awesome work!
Cool! Thank you!
Beautiful job
Only one thing, , , ,
Final shots,
White square to the players right -
Beautiful work 👍
Nice board how did you do your measurements for the rabbit to be so perfect?
Great chess table. Do you have the dimensions of the table and the surrounding trim
06:19 bottom right should always be a light square!
beautiful
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
I would have liked to see some more of your glue up in real time though.
Great video. Great chess board. Is there a way to buy a custom chess board like this from you?? Thanks.
Muy hermoso!! Cuánto mide y cuánto saldría uno en pesos mexicanos? Muchas gracias.
I would say hold the high gloss lacker, I hate playing on shinny boards, very distracting - actually ignore me, board looks truly stunning...great job!!
Thanks Kaine! High-gloss might have been too much, but I wanted a thick coat of something to keep it protected. Satin might have been a better choice.
It looks stunning with the glass pieces on it though! You might be on to something on ease of use though. There is a balance (hence staunton style in general)
Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful finish product, however an easy way to remember board setting is light on right. Not nitpicking just friendly advice.;-)
I had no idea there was a right way to do it, but hat makes sense. I’ve had several people point that out, but you’ve been the most polite about it!
Gunflint Designs cool man, yea some people get a little over zealous when the see even a minor mistake made by someone else. Thankyou for your reply
What flexable glue did u use??
As a player, there needs to be more contrast between the frosted and clear pieces. It's beautiful, regardless.
Muito lindo mesmo seu trabalho. Parabéns
Love the wood,is that walnut?where did you buy that awesome wood..?been watching your videos, your spot on...
Thanks Damon! That is black walnut and ash. My family actually has a small tree farm so all of my lumber comes from trees that my Grandfathers planted. ruclips.net/video/smBRsF9NTAI/видео.html
Love the board but disagree with the glass pieces. I think you'd be best to either go with some hardwood pieces or stone on a board that nice.
Nice man
Do you have a link for the glass pieces? I like the contrast
Those pieces came from a while chess set and board I had when I was a kid. Not sure where it actually came from.
Man, I've had the opposite experience with lacquer as far as Not being forgiving. Perhaps I should try brushing it. I always spray it, and I find any imperfections or uneven spraying shows up. Board looks great btw.
Very nice.
I would put polyurethane on it. And make it little more thick.
Endgrain has a tendency to twist and bow.
Anyway very nice video.
Did you go with 2" or 1.5" squares?
Can you please tell me how did you make the 'soft' rounding of the edges of the top surface of the chessboard? And also, what kind of varnish did you use for the surface?
Are there plans for this anywhere?

Hi, where did you get your branding iron
brandingirons.com
What are the dimensions of the board itself and the dimensions of the squares?
Good job...
Where did you get the branding done?
www.brandingirons.com
sick. great video.
How did you measure the frame so that the rabbeted pieces fit together?
amazing work, using your design as reference to make one for my sister (newbie here). What is that glue you used? Can’t seem to find info on it. Is it some sort of silicone?
Hi What thickness did you end up with? the thickness doesn't have to match the square width does it?
I don't remember for sure, so I'll take some guesses. The frame is probably 5/8 thick, and the board is probably 1" or more. Since the board sits into the frame half-way, we are probably talking about 1 to 1-1/4 overall thickness.
Do you find a market for selling these?
Are end grain boards the most common and strongest?
Just curious. Was there a reason that you routed the recess into the frame after assembling? Why did you not route before assembly? I am newish to finer woodworking and looking for more tips and tricks.
Nice chess board and thanks for the video.

Beautiful board! I was slightly annoyed that you set the chess board up wrong though. Black square is always on the left corner. Queen goes on her own color.
I'm a builder, not a chess player.
Yeah. I felt weird being bothered by that. I love the board and hate the fact I may have an OCD
@@GunflintDesigns Even if you aren't, it is your obligation as a good builder to know what you are going to build that actually works for the game.
@@GunflintDesigns what's the use of a wrong chess board one can't play on? Less excuses, more attention.
lol
thats awesome
the only problem is the set up at the end, black square on the left bottom
Thanks Pedro. I'm a builder, not a chess player so I had no idea that there was a front and back to a chess board. I have had lots of people point this out to me since I posed this video... some of them weren't as nice about it as you.
Pedro Marques Moreira what do you mean?
Anthony Patricio - the left rook (black or white rook) its always on a black square
Pedro Marques Moreira but if he's to rotate it, it will be placed correctly, right?
Anthony Patricio - 90° yes
