@@harishsharma7568 Lol I first ignored it, but gradually the problem grew and it led to a crack in internal screen due to pressure...
Ultimately the screen went green/pink/black and then one day it just switched off. It was a mess and it cost me about 2000 inr to fix the screen AND the hinges. If you're facing the same problem, do get it checked before you also go through the same shit I went through :')

A cracked screen bezel in the corner of the screen was my first experience with opening from the side back in the late 90's. The shop accused me of opening the screen back too far and because of that accusation I never returned to them. A couple of years later I found out about opening from the corners will cause damage. This was at a time when laptop screens were latched closed in the corners so that didn't help with the behaviour.
I've told everyone since then open from the centre.

Just had this happen to me with my Dell 3511 which are notorious for broken hinges. Thanks to Ebay for new parts and RUclips videos I was able to do the repair myself for about $40 which included new cover, bezel, and hinges. Taking it apart and putting it back together was a lot easier than it looked, (take your time). One of the repair videos I watched suggested adjusting the tension in the hinges to make it a little easier to open and close which should make your repair less likely to need repeating.

Thanks for sharing this. I also do repairs like that occasionally. Most of the time lenovos, they get brittle after a couple of years. I always make the friction of the hinges a little lesser. That way the stress on the enclosure parts is a bit lesser. I also use abs plastic and AB glue to reinforce the enclosures.

As you say the plastic degrades over time and on the hp one side failed quite badly. Used a resin to effect a repair but not sure how long that will last. Very disappointing given this weakness will lead to a lot of laptops being destoyed well before what should be their useful lifetimes.

  • @nrich5127

Most laptops have hinges that have a nut that controls the tension and it is too tight which causes the hinge to break the plastic housing over time . The hinges seem to get stiffer over time and this causes the problem. The laptop makers don't care and try to charge you when you make a warrantee claim. I have repaired my laptop by passing a screw with a nut through the hinge and the cover. My next new laptop I will loosen the nut slightly on both hinges to take away the strain. If you are afraid to do this get a computer repair tech to do it for you.

I always open from the center, and believe I’m pretty gentle with my computer, but this issue came out of nowhere with no warning for me. Anyone else have that same experience?

@@sushilmhetre8625 lol just don't close the laptop and you won't do any damage to it. After all, it's just the hinge (to allow for closing and opening just like a door)

Sigh. This just happened to my laptop. Managed to get it opened tho & its still working. Ill just never close it again!!
Looking at that 2 hinge design in and Im not surprised it breaks. Im no designer etc but shouldnt the whole bottom of it be one big hinge so it spreads the continuous opening and shutting of the laptop out across the entire bottom of the screen? or shouldnt there at least be a third hinge in the centre to help the 2 on the sides?.... Meh, I bet they design these things to break after a few yrs so people have to buy new ones. Anyway good explanation of what happened. Thanks for the upload.

I have an HP Chromebook that I just bought last November...and it looks like the hinge is already starting to crack on the right side...unless it was a manufacturing issue. Can't prove that yet. I'm hoping it breaks before the warranty. Unfortunately, I was told it's cheaper to buy a new Chromebook than to get it repaired. :(

duct tape and super glue that shit, may not fix it but it will help delay the issue or, fix the issue and keep the screen open forever now. lol. I been through this myself. I now learned what to do :(
