  • This HP 15-bs158sa (TPN-C129) laptop was incredibly slow, and both of its hinges were showing signs that they had broken out of the top plate / palm rest. In this video, we clone the hard drive to a new SSD and install the new drive, and we also repair both hinges by creating a resin using bicarbonate of soda (a.k.a. baking soda) and Super Glue.

    I have just spent three-quarters of an hour watching someone fixing a very tired computer, and it was both informative and very calming. Thank you.

    With a 2.5 mm drill drill through the palm rest from the back. Attach the hinges with 2.5 mm flat head machine screws and nuts. There is enough space on the bottom tray to accommodate the nuts. Works better than new.

    I've seen so many of this same laptop with the same problem at the hinge.

      Same. Coincidentally, this very laptop returned to my shop for something else this week (exactly one year after this repair), and the Super Glue + soda has held strong this entire time!

    I just fix same laptop as the 1 u repair, same model same problem. It took me 5 hour to fix the screw base. After all done, that laptop doesnt align with lid 🤣🤣🤣. Perhaps i need to trim resin a bit, anyway Thanks for sharing the material & how to fix it.

    • @ComputerHelpNI
      @ComputerHelpNI  2 года назад

      Yes it can be hard to get everything aligned after this repair. As long as the metal screw inserts are in the right place, you should be able to trim down the resin to get the hinges to fit properly. Good luck!

    Thanks for video man!
    IS that resin bond stronger than epoxy?

    • @ComputerHelpNI
      @ComputerHelpNI  3 года назад +5

      I'm not sure, really; I haven't tried epoxy for these repairs. It's pretty good, but it's not perfect. Perhaps I'll do a comparison video to find out!

    Hi...
    I have a HP Pavilion 17,3"... I have the same problem with the hinges base... Do you think I shoul replace te hinges too??? Or just is enought with this metod to fix the bases??? And maybe put a little bit of WD40 to the old hinges.
    Best Regards...

      Hard to say if the hinges need to be replaced or not. Sometimes you can loosen the nut to make the hinge easier to move and reduce the amount of force it imparts on the chassis.

    Thanks, a good insight here. What's the name of that software for cloning hard disks?

    • @ComputerHelpNI
      @ComputerHelpNI  3 года назад +2

      Thanks. I use (the paid version of) Minitool Partition Wizard. With the 'lifetime / pro' license, I can install it onto three PCs and also have a bootable USB version. It makes it easy to clone to and from drives of differing sizes.

    Hello!
    If I just leave my laptop open the whole time, will it be OK?
    Coz everything is working fine now, I'm just scared that this broken hinge might cause some other problems if I keep open/close it.. 😐
    Thank you!

    • @ComputerHelpNI
      @ComputerHelpNI  Год назад +1

      Yes, there is nothing wrong with leaving your laptop open all the time. If your hinge has broken away from the frame, each time you open or close the lid you risk causing more damage.

    this works wonders if there are enough pieces of plastic left, when the plastic pieces are completely gone, it's A LOT harder to put the bronze nut in the correct position and height...you can't just glue it to the chassis, it has to go a few mm in the air, so the screw can reach it...AND the hinge must rest over the nut, leaving a space between them is a recipe for prompt failure

    • @ComputerHelpNI
      @ComputerHelpNI  Год назад +2

      True. I've seen Sorin (www.youtube.com/@electronicsrepairschool) use hot glue, which looks like it could work in those cases where the plastic is so damaged that you have no good reference points for the bronze inserts.

      When the plastic is completely gone, glue to the bottom and use a longer screw. Worked for me.

    I have facing some problem in laptop it cannot power on. I think it is because of the baking soda releases some water inside the laptop how to cure it ?

    • @ComputerHelpNI
      @ComputerHelpNI  Год назад +1

      I've never seen baking soda release water. I can't say what might be wrong with your laptop. Sorry!

    I used Gorilla weld after using super glue alone to line up the broken pieces. Gorilla weld is way stronger than superglue and not brittle.

    • @ComputerHelpNI
      @ComputerHelpNI  Год назад +1

      I've had great results with this method: The laptops I've seen again a year later are still holding strong. I'm sure you're right that Gorilla Weld is excellent though.

      I don't know; I've never attached a Razer LCD panel before. On other laptops, I've used this double-sided tape with good results: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00IDAQA8K/

    Which Glue you have used here to repair hinges

    • @ComputerHelpNI
      @ComputerHelpNI  2 года назад +1

      Liquid Super Glue (the brand). It has to be the liquid version of Super Glue, not the gel.

    Is this video for anyone, or just experience computer repair professionals? - The right upper corner of my HP Laptop 17 ca0xxx hinge just snapped and I'm pretty sure it's do to broken plastic inside. I'm thinking of buying a repair kit, watching a video such as yours to try and fix it myself. - Is this video for people like me, or for experienced professionals? - Thank you.

      It's for anyone who feels like they can do what they see in the video. To be honest, these hinge repair jobs were some of the more difficult ones I ever tackled. It's very rewarding to fix one of these though!

      Most important is not to get glue inside on the threads.

    Not sure what customer paid for the repair. But it seems to me that the cost would not be worth the price. Probably not too much more money for new depending in the processor, but with 4gig of ram it surly was not a higher end unit.
