Hey Marjolein, love the vunerabiltiy & honnesty! Dank je wel for sharing!! Keep going, seems your fan base is growing and we love youtube channel. Groetjes & knuffel uit zwitzerland.
I think it's easy to romanticise your life, but it's important to remember that there are huge challenges to live like this. I appreciate the honesty. I hope things have gotten easier since you posted this. Hello from Malaysia!
The honesty is one of the many things that make these videos unique. There is no posing, no 'look at me!'. So unusual and refreshing. I am totally hooked..😏💕
I just discovered your channel, it's absolutely amazing. To me, a simple, every day life is the most interesting content even though for you it may seem dull or not good enough. I think a lot of people would agree with me that watching your everyday life challenges and happy moments is more than enough.
Hello from Toledo, OH in the US. Love watching whatever you post. It’s so cool to see a life so very different than mine. Stumbled upon your account awhile back and have loved watching your island life since. Thank you for showing us what life is like there. I would love to see a tour of the whole island, maybe where you talk about the different kinds of plants, trees, fruits, what’s edible ot edible etc. and maybe the wildlife, too. I’m a city girl, and island life is fascinating.
Hello from Wisconsin, USA. We have our challenges here too. We just had snow, flooding and a power outage. Trees were up- rooted and blown over. Every place has its challenges. I enjoy hearing about yours because they are so different from mine. I'm always happy when you post a new video.
Another greeting from Wisconsin a northern state in the U.S. Just started watching your channel. I appreciated your stories of how you live on Mentawai Island. Coffee chats are a good video. I like learning about your and An’s culture and have a lot of respect for the way you are living. I am impressed how you make curry from scratch and don’t open a can or carton of coconut milk to make it. It must taste soooo much better. I 🙏 your mosquito bites have healed. Thank you for sharing your lives.
Your story of inconvenience is so incredible! I love it. I know it must be hard to appreciate, but you live in a place where time moves differently. I know that with Amazon Prime you can get like a toaster on the same day you order it, but, I know I'm not living your life, but everything you own and every action you take is so much more valuable, and considered. Sorry for your trouble, but you'll get through it! OH and I love your videos, amazing stuff.
Oh yes 1000% percent! Could not agree more! Time definitely moves differently here, and that’s part of the beauty! (But also a bit frustrating at times hahaha 😆)
I have just started watching your videos, i very much enjoy them and i and my wife can relate to your trials and tribulations because we live on an island that has about 5000 people, no cars , more infrastructure but it takes us about an hour from our island Boipeba, located 88klms due south of Salvador, Brazil to the nearest city Valencia if we want to get building materials, appliances ect and about 5 hours from the nearest airport. We live in a jungle house and i just got over 10 days sick from Denge and my wife breaks out from mosquito bites just like you. Keep up the great videos . We also have trials and tribulations, but what doesnt kill you makes you stronger . 🇧🇷👊🌴Rob and Alessandra
I just discovered your channel a few days ago and have been binging your videos. I am really enjoying them. I like this “coffee chat” style very much. I would love to see more of them and hear more about your adventures. If you are looking for ideas, I would love to know a bit of your history - how did you end up in the Mentawai Islands, how did you end up learning to surf, how did you and An meet and start dating, how did you learn to speak the Mentawai language, how did An learn to speak English, where does An’s family live, has your family ever come to the Island to visit you? Your life is fascinating!
Yes - these are all the things l really want to know too! More of the backstory would be so interesting and give context to these fantastic videos. Please! 🙏💕
I get your Island fever ! Was living on a small Greek Island over 40 years ago.. summer ok...then came winter ! No phone...stores closet..far from mainland and expensive to go by boat or small scary planes...lol..yes its in many ways a rich slow nice life, but also hard and stressful ! Glad you got Internet now. Will change your life tons. Hugs from Spain (Im swedish)
Very important to vocalise how you are feeling - I find it is the best way to clear those feeling out. Even though nothing changes, it feels like speaking it releases it 💚 Thank you for sharing so honestly 🙏 we've nearly caught up on all your vids now ✌🌿
Oh we're here to listen to you at any time. We would never get bored watching your every videos you have. Regarding the mosquitoes problem maybe you can light some citronella candles on every corner of your house or get a ThermaCell which is chemical-free, or those coils you can wear in your arms. There's some chargeable electronic thing too you can carry with you wherever you go that would deter the mosquitoes to bite you. What's your address if we want to send you something?
Ooh that’s interesting! Thank you for the tip! As for sending things from outside of Indonesia, it’s quite difficult as many things get stuck at customs thousands of km away from us 😅🫣
Succes!
Another viewer here that just discovered your videos and also am enjoying them very much! Had the great fortune to live in the Philippines (am married 48 years to a Filipino) and have had several memorable off the grid "primitive" experiences on various island--no matter some of the inconveniences the test of my ability to cope generally had me feeling accomplished! And of course, knowing all was temporary helped with that victory! Admire you and your husband for taking on this living arrangement and thank you hugely for sharing your lives with us!!
Hello my name is Carri from Ohio in the United States 🇺🇸. I just came across your channel. So great to meet you and learn your way of life on an Island. 🤗💖
Listening to this makes me appreciate my "normal" problems. NEVER AGAIN will I complain having to drive to the hardware store when my drill bit breaks! I would go absolutely bonkers having to deal with all that stuff on a remote island! Love from Cape Town ❤
I just found your channel from the video Strick and Fran (B2B Castaways) posted today. I'm enjoying your videos and stories. Good luck with the upcoming solar panel install and looking forward to following you all. Take care from Oakland, California.
I absolutely love your show I'm from a small island in Central America so I can so relate to a lot of your struggles I absolutely loved it when I was a child I didn't know any different❤
I love this ! Living in the busy USA, I often fantasize about living a life like yours. I really appreciate the reminder that we all have our challenges, just different types of them. You come across as a very warm and genuine person. Have you ever done a video on your background , how you met An? I just came across your channel, so I have some catching up to do!
Hey!
Really enjoy your videos always theres ups and downs in life but there's always a way out yup its its always a challenge for things you want to accomplish in life but you are blessed so enjoy life and be happy thankful always live life happy with whatever God provides for us thanks for the videos
love your chanel. i just found it by accident. i also live on an island. 2,5 h from the mainland.. so i feel you. :) sometimes is hard. and you are even more extreme. best wishes
Hello, I understand you very well. People have to tendency to imagine or confuse the everyday life on a island as tourism/vacation. Life is life with the good and the bad wherever to decide to live. Enjoy the good and hope the bad will go away fast.
Wow, it was really good for me to watch this video to put my own situation in perspective. Although I suspect I could be your grandma (for sure your mother) in terms of our age difference, I too am building a house with my husband. Most houses in the US are built by builders, not the people who are going to live in the house. People have jobs to make money so they can buy a house not built it themselves! But it has always been my dream to build my own house and now we're finally getting to do it. It's very exciting and rewarding. However, as YOU know very well, building a house can be totally overwhelming at times. There's such a learning curve, and we're building things as we can afford it rather than taking out any loan. So that, combined with our lack of experience and having to figure out the right way to do basically everything we need to do to build the house, can make it extremely frustrating at times. But we have a Home Depot (HUGE hardware and building supply store) 30 minutes away as well as an equipment rental place where we can rent any really big construction machines or equipment to use anytime we need it. I can also order basically anything from Amazon and have it delivered right to my door within a week, or even over night! In addition, we have electricity and water and refrigeration and heat and grocery stores and restaurants and high speed internet and...well, everything relatively close by, and a pickup truck to drive there! We have all these things and so many other advantages that make our house build sooo much easier than what you two are having to do to make your dream home come true... So the next time I'm feeling sorry for myself because I forgot something and have to drive an hour round trip to the big fat hardware & building supply store that has practically everything, I'll remember just how lucky I am compared to what you two have to do just to get a new drill bit! Don't give up, you're doing an amazing job!!!
Aawww yes exactly! Thank you so much for the encouragement. Building yourself is definitely not easy, wherever you are. But as you say, it’s also so rewarding! Though i wish for a home depot at times 😂😅
Stuff like drill bits especially those prone to breaking e.g. small ones or those often used, always buy spares. At least 3-4 of each size. Same with screws. Even when we have shops nearby, its still a hassle to go get something when you are in the flow of doing something.
l'm from hong kong, just retired and move to thailand and stay in a small village with my thai wife and their family. lt's a big different l know, please enjoy it. Live will go on, everyday is fresh with sunshine.
Living in Indonesia, especially on remote islands, requires a lot of patience. Sorry, this is just a little advice. Hope you are have fun and enjoying your day by day. 💪👍🍹😋
Lemon grasses, dill plants, basil and mint are supposed to help with controlling the mosquitoes. Please be very careful with all those bites. I grew up in the village in the Philippines and my Papa always did burn some dry coconut leaves to kill mosquitoes.
I can imagine your frustration with the drill bit breaking and running out of the materials you need for your project. Not being able to source tools and materials locally is definitely a challenge. Take care ❤
Thanks for this video i wiil not complain anymore walking 15 mins to take the tram going to the city center (Brussel) to buy things and food that i miss from Philippines ( we got a lot of Asian store here 8 mins by tram (not 1hour and a half)😊
Lived many years like that as well in the Phillippines, when half my age. Far in the hinterlands, build a native house and no electricity and running water etc....all takes so much time to complete (even little) projects.
OK so you had enough of island life let's swap places 😂 you can come live in rainy UK il come fish Swin eat from your garden oh and I might learn to surf too lol 😂 love your channel when you going to built visitors lodge for us to come haha
THE FOLLOWING IS NOT PROFESSIONAL ADVICE: My experience in South East Asia is that antibiotics are over the counter, as opposed to in the US where we need prescriptions for them. If you don’t already do so, you should keep a 10-day course of antibiotics on hand to take WHILE YOUR IMMEDIATELY SEEKING MEDICAL DIRECTION FROM A PHYSICIAN. I’ve heard you refer to the dangers of skin infections in two different videos. You’re correct: the potential for disaster is great for an uncontrolled, acute skin infection. Penicillins, 1st generation cephalosporins (I.e., cephalothin), ciprofloxacin, etc. If you get an infection bad enough to initiate a course of antibiotics, you must immediately seek advice from a physician.
You are brave, have watch 27 of your videos now, you and your husband inspire others to learn. But l want to advice you in a little way, as a grandma my son is 37years, l know you people eat organic and natural food, but you need some food supplement's to boost your homose, pls reduce your coffee. Coffee kills female cell, it doesn't allow female eggs to fertilize. Just advice, l can see both of you have a good heart.
People feel a bit 'blah' sometimes, no matter where they live. You're living in what looks like paradise to 99% of the global population, if that makes you feel any better lol.
I appreciate your life in forest but I am surprised that for how many years you will live life like this as you will have child and then their future will be your prime objective in life.
Hi Guys ALOHA From NZ. I have just watched one of your docos so far!! AND LOVED IT THANK YOU FOR SHARING and Wanted to CONNECT to help ease Your Loneliness and Mine!!
Hello from Bali! Although we kinda feel like we are in mainland over here, sometimes things just don’t work… and we have so many of those days also. There’s no pretty perfect paradise in this world, we will always have days like this. 🫶🏼

Would you share your recipe for the pineapple cake? It looks like it was pretty tasty
I would love to see what a surfing camp is all about.

Yes 💯 we usually have a course of antibiotics here at home.
Thank you for watching all our videos! 🙏🏼
And yes you are right, there are many things that can disturb our health. But we’re all trying our best ☺️
People feel a bit 'blah' sometimes, no matter where they live.
You're living in what looks like paradise to 99% of the global population, if that makes you feel any better lol.
Yes exactly!
Wow
☺️
I appreciate your life in forest but I am surprised that for how many years you will live life like this as you will have child and then their future will be your prime objective in life.
