Avios has designed a beautiful twin-engine Albatross HU-16 flying boat. What could be better than a large monohull flying boat gracing the skies or taxing across a lake? This excellent plane is made of strong EPO foam and comes with scale plastic fittings for an extremely realistic look. It is painted in a US Navy rescue scheme of seagull gray, yellow and white for easy visibility under all conditions.

The Albatross HU-16 came into service with the United States Air Force in 1949 and primarily designed as an amphibious plane for search and rescue missions. It was extensively used for combat search and rescue in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. As an amphibian, it could land on both land and open sea and was optimized for 4-foot (1.2 meters) seas but could land in heavier seas.
The Albatross is powered by twin Aerostar 3536-850KV motors with scale 3-blade 10x6 propellers given ample power. The 30A reversing ESCs make it easier to navigate around the water and out of tricky situations. The addition of a water rudder makes maneuvering on the water even easier. The built-in flaps provide plenty of lift and make landings and takeoffs a real pleasure. The Albatross provides a great presence in the air and looks outstanding from every angle, in the air, on the ground, or in the water.
    Features:
    • Classic Flying Boat design
    • US Navy livery with pre-applied stickers
    • Twin AeroStar reversing ESCs (water-resistant)
    • Twin 35mm AeroStar brushless motors
    • Preinstalled electronics
    • Water Rudder
    • Navigation lights

I'd love to get this in all white so I could give it a U. S. Coast Guard paint job.
I was an Old Goat Flt. Mechanic on Goats.
    We call ourselves Goat Herders.
That was in 1976 to late 77 when I crossed over to Sikorsky HH52a SeaGuard amphibious helos.
A few years after my enlistment was up I helped restoring a Grumman Goose.
I got that job due to my prior experience as a C.G. Goat Flt. Mech.

I’ve owned this plane for the past 2 Summers. It flies very well with 5000 4s and makes a great FPV plane to use off the water. It has a ton of power but feels pretty heavy and thus handles wind really well. Flies best with a bit of rudder in the turns. I wouldn't do aerobatics with it because the wings might come off (but it can do it I guess). Land with lots of power on the water or it will bounce like all float planes. The rudder and water rudder have tons of authority so you don't really need the reversing ESCs. Tons of internal room for flight controllers or extra electronics. Remove the wing floats if you want to take off and land off grass unless you're using a golf green. I made public a 15 second clip of this flying from an FPV perspective off our dock if you want to check it out.

    • @HobbyKingOfficial
      @HobbyKingOfficial  3 года назад +1

You needn't worry about the wings, even in aggressive maneuvers, they are pretty much rock solid. Rudder in turns is always advised on most planes and the Albatross always looks better for it. Glad you are enjoying yours.
      Stuart.

When John VHRC flew this plane a year ago, he nail the flight in a way the plane look super scale and I had to push the buy icon. Still have mine in box, (to many planes to flight). But this plane is so beautiful, that will be a hangar queen. LOL Nice review Stuart and nice flying.

Great review - loved the chase boat video! Had mine since they first came out and still love it. Getting rid of the (non-scale) water rudder helps the appearance a lot - it's not needed if you have differential throttle. I used the servo to drive an elevator instead, giving some redundancy. I also cut the fin down to the top rudder hinge - still bigger than scale but it does look better (and flies fine). I use half flap 99% of the time and get easy 10-15 minute flights on 4S 4000. As mentioned a little bit of wind helps on the water, particularly to get smooth landings.

You are not wrong, for must my cruising I use mid flaps too. Stuart.

Stu, just for kicks, lets see some single engine performance takeoff, landings and cruise flight. Would be really cool to demonstrate if it has enough rudder authority, but I highly doubt that a single engine takeoff would be manageable except under ideal conditions, and just enough power. I sure would try it if I had one. My Cessna 310 does it beautifully.

Your video’s are great and very useful. I do have one piece of constructive criticism though, and that would be; please stop referring to these demonstrations as “reviews”. You’re not independent, you are the company as it were. I would not expect any legitimate manufacturer to offer up their sales demonstrations as being critical reviews of their Owen product. You’ve got a decent product, represent it as such, and leave the “reviews” to those who dont get a paycheck from the company that makes/distributes the product.
