How to Diagnose a 2014 Chrysler Town & Country 3.6l with an Engine Misfire - P0300 P0305

  • A tricky misfire diagnosis is no match for Bernie. In this video he tackles a misfire on a 2014 Chrysler Town & Country (minivan) with a 3.6 liter engine. Spark plugs, fuel injectors and ignition coils have already been installed in the engine and those new parts did not remedy the problem.
    When reviewing scan tool data, the engine is running rich (-33 on both banks) and low engine manifold vacuum (2.3 HG). There were two DTCs stored, P0300 Random / Multiple Cylinder Misfire and a P0305 Cylinder #5 misfire. The low engine vacuum is causing the fuel tirm issue. This engine is a speed density system., it used a manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor to determine load. With low vacuum, the ECM assumes there is a load and adds fuel.
    Using eSCAN’s built-in relative compression test, two low cylinders are identified. Next, the eSCOPE with the low cylinders are identified using the built-in CKP Misfire detection tool. Cylinders 1, 3 and 5 are misfiring. Bank 1 (the right side of the engine) is misfiring. Tailpipe pulses help to confirm a timing issue and then finally the root cause is determined by testing cylinder pressure (using a pressure transducer), a faulty VCT (camshaft actuator / phaser control) and faulty piston rings (blow-by).

    I just had a 2002 CRV where they had done the chains and still the same issue of phase incorrect detected P0341. I ended up finding the time being advanced about 40 cam degrees. I unplugged the solenoid to ensure it wasn't being commanded on; same issue. I took the solenoid out and a piece of a mesh was missing, I recommended to replace that solenoid because there is no way it could be advanced any other way; waveform kept showing advanced as soon as it was started; I had them open up the valve cover to verify timing as I did not have my pressure transducer. After they replaced the solenoid, the car ran fine. What happened was that the mesh had been jammed inside the seat of the solenoid which was causing oil to pass when it should not have as it wasn't seating correctly. I actuated the solenoid and it worked fine before I advised replacing it.

    first thing first compression test next leakdown test on 1 3 5 cylinders following the leak you determine if it's a valves or rings on compression test on 5 ads oil in the cyl and retest to see if is not a wash cyl by fuel ! if it's valves ex or int, cover valve off to see spings ,rockers or guides (those 3,6 have a real problems with guides valves ) if it's the 'ring you will know the blow by in the crankcase so my diagnostic is a guide intake valve dropped and washed the cylinder by fuel so you have blow by. it's well know that the head on 3.6 have problems and it's not rare for cyl 5!

    That much blowby wouldn't be caused by a worn ring. We'd be talking a hole in the piston. Also, isn't it strange that all the problems are on one single bank? What are the odd that you'd have one bank with some radically worn rings and the other bank is near perfect? Also the problem bank has a radical difference in the amount of wear of each set of rings from cylinder to cylinder. I think a closer look is needed before a diag is complete.

    • @cyberslacker5150
      @cyberslacker5150 6 месяцев назад

      Your right. But maybe a cracked ring or a stuck ring would also cause a real bad blowby. Or a cracked piston, and yes, a hole in the piston. Probably a boroscope would help. Maybe pouring some thick oil and running the compression test. The oil sticks to the bottom of the cylinder and so the oil would increase the pressure somewhat. Also maybe look at the spark plug, see if it has oil.

  • @dfb1111

You’re getting lots of info from this tool no doubt, but I’m not convinced all bases are being covered here, and you could be setting yourself up for taking this engine apart a second time should something be missed

    • @scientist100
      @scientist100 Год назад

      no need, he can actually see what is going on as components are moving, camera can only see when the engine is stationary, also, a leaking VVT will not show when you remove the valve cover, it will show in time because oil pressure is no longer present to make the phaser over advanced. As soon as you get oil pressure in there, the phaser is over advanced, I had this happen and I was trying to catch the phaser movement as oil pressure builds up but the oil pump is so fast, you can't even see when the phasers are advancing as the engine turns, crazy.
