Chrysler Town & Country: P2308 ECM Failure
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 мар 2019
- In this video I have a look at a 2008 Chrysler Town and Country that came in with a misfire on cylinders number three and six. It also has a code P02308. It does not take long to chase it down and find a failed ECM. -Enjoy!

"They get to sell the parts, we get to fix the car"
Best quote of the day, well done on the fix.
i will bet the new PCM/ECU/WhateverU was not cheap!!!
An epic line "They replace the parts ; We fix the car ". You are the man, sir !
Your understanding of circuit design and field experience makes the process move along quickly. I'm constantly impressed how seamlessly you work.
I really noticed that in this video.
My thoughts exactly. Eric O seems to know his way around this stuff. When it comes to mechanics on RUclips IMO they're; Scanner Danner,Ivan(PHAD),Eric O,Keith and ETCG. These are these are the best in the business. I'm not saying there aren't other good mechanics out there but these seem to defy the odds and get it right the first time.
If you like electrical diagnosis, then you should check out DiagnoseDan. Eric O mentioned him on What’s Up Wednesday, and Dan is very good too.
Yes!! ERIC O., IN THE KNOW!!!
It's all in the edit :)
Welcome back to the Chrysler Electrical Problem Auto Channel
I'm a mechanic, and when I see a chrysler coming I'm there like "OMG! this gonna be a shitty day..."
It’s relaxing to see a mechanic that KNOWS how to do things proper .
I'm a 74 yr. old retired engineer/shadetree mechanic. Love your videos!!!
Eric would make a awesome auto tech school instructor, I would think his classes would have a high success rate.
Eric is the head of the auto tech department at the university of youtube mechanics lmao
He’s one of the best I’ve ever seen. I do this for a living.
He would be a great teacher.
@@brianburns7211 He is a great teacher.
Robert Weir Like your name. I’m planning to see Dead & Co. in Saratoga, NY.
I am retired now, but man I ran my own business for years and I had to laugh when I heard you say they get the big job I get the little and I knew exactly what you meant. You are an awesome technician and you have a beautiful family I used to work the same exact way course I was a technician to the 158 travel centers of America and that’s where my career and thank you for keeping me out of the boredom wagon
Lets put a ECM behind the area that gets most road salts, dirt, water. Yep nothing will go wrong.
of course! nothing can go wrong there, specially on a chrysler...
Mark Wolf My cars ECM under the glove box way better spot for it then the one in this video
hilarious thing is theyve been putting them there on these vans for over 10 years and still havent cared enough to change it
Right? Most of them are inside the car behind the dash or in the firewall
I was wondering if I was the only one that saw that the vital connections for engine spark creation were stupidly located near the wheel well! LOL Great Job Chrysler Engineers!!!!!!
Eric, great video as always. Just want you to know that watching you and your excellent diagnostic procedures saved me an untold amount of money and time. Short story: 2014 Grand Caravan, 110k, running ok until it's in 6th gear and light throttle is applied -it starts shaking like the trans is falling out. My regular shop (not SMA quality, but honest) can't get me in for 3 days. No codes. No misfire data on my Autel scanner. In desperation, took it on the highway and floored it - NOW we have a code (forgot the number) indicating a problem with cylinder one. -15 wind chill and no garage. What to do?
Here's where watching Eric's diagnostics saved the day. Process of elimination was: wiring is likely ok cuz the engine runs normally otherwise. Plug is likely ok cuz engine runs normally otherwise. Chrysler coil - likely to fall under high demand. Buy non-Dorman coil, replace #1 coil, problem solved. Granted, I didn't prove the coil bad by swap-tronics or measurement, but did I mention the-15 wind chill and no garage? Your diagnostics gave me the confidence in MY diagnosis, Eric, and I thank you by purchasing a bunch of of stuff from your Amazon store.
PLEASE keep making videos, even the "boring" brake jobs you do teach me something new every time, and I know there are thousands like me in the RUclips-sphere. Thanks again from a mechanic that stopped wrenching commercially 25 years ago but never sold his tools.
*Chrysler.*
One of only a few single words to inspire absolute terror.
That is so funny
I have had good luck with the Gen. III T&C's. Three of them still going.
@ 6.4 and 6.0
{Fiat ~ Christ what was I thinking ler} my 92 Doged mitsubishi ran 250K no real problems I was blessed.
Don't be afraid.. Every car breaks!
Eric, you are the savior for all the repair shops in your area, those shops got to be the worst repair shops around, when they botch the jobs and then send out to another shop to fix the original problems.
Those other shops should watch SMA videos!!
I'm going to start trusting Hannah with seat-of-her-pants electrical diagnosis abilities. She understands my Two Basic Rules of Electricity. I saw "O2 Sensor high" and immediately thought "busted wire". What did Hannah say? "Did they hook it up?" Ding-dong, indeed. :P
It’s sad that a shop would leave the O2 swinging instead of fixing the mistake. Some people take no pride in their work. You won’t see those kinds of shenanigans at SMA.
He's smart enough to hit delete
Makes me wonder how those other "garages" manage to stay in business. There's only so many customers who will only take so much stupidity before they find a better business.
@@stanpatterson5033 that's the most discusting thing about the auto repair buisness; the shops that throw random parts at cars end up making the most money, while the honest guys get stuck cleaning up the hack's messes.
I do think customers are partly to blame too. Most customers will go to the guy who says "oh u need this, this and that part" INSTEAD OF GOING to the good honest technician who says "i dont know exactly what is wrong yet, u need to pay for the time to do a proper diagnosis."
@@michaelstjohn6086 you nasty bastard lol
@@mikec3104 I disagree. The honest guys will be the ones that give the higher price estimates because they will do it right which is usually more expensive and/or more time. This video was a prime example. The discount shop can offer a cheaper price to "fix" the car by using some cheap universal CAT. Compare that to someone like SMA saying you need to pay more money for an OEM cat so that things like this wont happen and the customer will think "Well I'll just go with the better deal for the same fix."
Glad Ms. Hannah is back to assist you!
I thought Miss Hannah went away to College? Blink twice in the next video if you are being held against your will.
Spring Break!
Yeah, instead of going to Lake Havasu or Panama City, Miss Hanner came back home to frigid NY to help out Mr.O!
iskandertime747 I’ll bet that it’s because she’s a little more industrious than the kids who go to the beach for the week.
@@brianburns7211 I agree!
THAT was fantastic!! Me thinks you are loving that new Bosch Scanner. DO NOT ever say again that you are not really that good. Modesty is one thing, open honesty is another. Thank you for sharing Eric. TTFN
To be from FL. And see a vehicle in a shop with snow on the hood like that is mind boggling . Great work as always.
Eric,
Getting it done once again. It never ceases to amaze me that you keep the cars rolling in and out and still have time to record, edit, and upload video for all of us to learn from. I appreciate it for sure and I know the majority of your subscribers do as well.
Keep on keeping on, and I owe you quite a few cold ones.
I try to watch as many videos as I can of yours because I like how you thoroughly diag things which is what I want to better at
Coincidentally I had the same exact van today at work with the same type of misfire on 2 cylinders and and I did the diag exactly as you did it with the test light while cranking making sure you have ground from the computer.luckily for the customer it was just a bad coil.
So thanks for the videos and keep them coming so I can keep learning lol
I'm in Australia and most of the time i watch your channel more than any other. Your straight to the point, Honest, and not trying to mislead people. Love your channel keep up the good work.
Hello Australia.
Hi, Sir you are the biggest asset on the face of the earth to the Automotive Industry diagnosing vehicles in the most technical way ever. You will be making a lot of high quality technicians ever
by your tapes. Your rewards are so great beyond words description. You and your family are the greatest people ever.
Thanks to all of you for your devotions.
Thank you Eric. Good job. I appreciate your videos. Have a blessed and safe week.
I love how you dont just throw parts a cars for a fix. I run into too many so called mechanics that do that. I get people all the time at my store that want me to just sell them a part based on the code that comes up on my little scanner but I always recommend that they go and have the issue checked further as the code just gives you an idea where to look for the problem but not always what is exactly wrong.
Best mechanic ever, you’re knowledge is incredible. Thank you.
It’s nice to see a tech that actually follows the problems and finds the root cause. Doesn’t just jack it back together. Rare these days.
I just want to thank you for your time and effort to share these videos with us. You have helped me several times. Merry Christmas!
I like how you do alot of diagnostics on your videos.. Not many RUclips channels do that.. Keep up the great work.. Love your videos
I've been to repair shops that charged for "voyagers of discovery" and parts replacement to see "if that will fix it"
and that's why I do it my self if possible. Sometimes I get it wrong but it's still cheaper than paying someone else to F**K my car!
21F that -6 C !!!!!
Love your show - keep it up!
They make an 8 inch extension harness for Chrysler product oxygen sensors. Must be a common problem. Your local salvage yard hasn't gotten up to date with the lingo. Around here, they call them previously tested parts, not used parts.
Great diagnosis and repair, no parts shower, just logical and targeted.
Thanks for sharing and best regards from the UK.
Love videos like this with a lot of diagnostics, I may do it for a living but definitely learned a lot from your videos as far as how to properly diagnose vehicles. Really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I work on semi trucks but the same concepts apply for the wiring it’s crazy how complicated vehicles have become.
Your videos are outstanding as is your knowledge and work ethic thank you for showing it still exists you rock!
A bad ecm on a Chrysler product who wooda thunk it! Thanks for sharing! 👌
A bad ECM after a new cat was welded on by a retarded exhaust shop. I'll bet a dollar the welder killed the ECM. Chrysler electronics are sensitive as fuck and won't handle that.
@@mannys9130 Nearly everthing electronic does not like arc weldring. Disconnect alternator & both battery leads, make sure welder has good ground, cross fingers and hope!
What do you drive that's so great ? Never once needed an ecm on any of my many mopars. Most mechanics put their kids through college on GM and have no idea how to work on Chrysler products. Please keep the hating allows be to buy my Jeeps and Dodges New for $4-5K off sticker.
1992 Shadow turbo, 1995 Stratus, 1995 voyager, 1998 Ram pickup, 1996 Dodge 3500 van, 2000 Dodge 1500 van, 2001 Chrysler Voyager. Not 1 ECM replacement, not1. By the way 2 of these vehicles are my son's.
@@mannys9130 Likely considering the very high quality of the weld. Probably had someone who had only rudimentary knowledge of the vehicle.
One of the best vehicles i ever owned was a Chrysler and one of the worst is a Chrysler. I had good and bad Fords and GMs in the mix. They all have their own common failures. Gives mechanics job security. Well done, Eric.
👍 to Hannah for diagnosing the O2 code! You’ve taught her well. Too bad she’s leaving for the people fixing business because she would be a great asset to the automotive aftermarket industry.
Never underestimate the ability of some hack mechanic to surprise you. We just got rid of one at my shop. (They have a VERY short life expectancy) Although I love the hacks at other shops, when their “work” shows up at mine. 😎
There's lots of "hick town" type mechanics who still chew bubble gum calling themselves mechanics.
EVERYTIME I watch you, you make me proud to be an AMERICAN
Fixing crappy AMERICAN cars. Correcting bad jobs by AMERICAN mechanics. I hate nationalism. Sorry nothing personal.
Bobby Brady being American.. I do agree to a point of what above stated due to the fact that Americans have lost a generation of skilled labor and there’s nothing more we can do.. other than stop makein robots to take our jobs over an than ultimately human race is irrelevant...🤷♂️😱. Js
@Bobby Brady No, I think he was pointing out a contradiction between being proud to be American because Eric fixed the problem, as it was an American that caused the problems to start with. I don't think it's anything against the USA. I would say it applies to any country, if you stated the same thing, but just insert another country into the statement.
Excellent video, i like how well you explain what and why you do things, very informative.
It’s nice to see a mechanic that’s not a parts replacer.
Excellent diagnostic skills, as usual! Keep up the great work brother!
"They get to sell all the parts and I get to fix the Car" Love it, I was rolling! 👍👍
I am so continually impressed by Eric O. so diligently wanting to Get It Right diagnosis. Like he says ' If you put a part in it, you've married that problem forever ! ' That is ( seemingly ) so rare these days, that techs take the time for what's right for the customer. What I like so much about Eric O. is he tells you WHY he is doing something. My wife's ride recently needed service for a very annoying intermittent problem - squeaky cold start water pump belt. Because the once reliable shop down the street went to crap with personnel changes - uh, billing me for sh-- that didn't get done -- I tried a different shop. I was very fortunate to deal with a service writer that is also a tech-mechanic-wrench. He totally Got It when I told him I wanted the old water pump back. He took it apart because he was intensely curious as I was.He says, ' Turn the pulley really slow, you'll feel the flat spot' - yep he nailed it. They'll get my future business. BTW, this is a pay techs by the hour / salary shop. As service writer-tech-mechanic Todd put it, ' That pay by the job rate hour stuff doesn't help anyone! It doesn't' help the customer, it doesn't help my guys, it doesn't help me. I don't believe in it. It just plain doesn't work. ' Wow- music to my ears ! I love techs like Eric O. & my guy Todd that get it right. BTW, no more squeaky water pump belt in the Wife's ride. Happy Wife, happy life.
This Doc. Does more than practice, he knows his stuff and shows it every video..
A Chrysler ECU and a new EGR Valve. Quick and correct diagnostic tests! Love that 02 sensor plug in! HEY! It was in the "correct area!" Nice Job! Looks like a "whiteout" outside that door window!
Get the old EGR valve from the other shop and put it back, it was part of the previous parts cannon " FIX "
Logical Guy for real huh maybe it’s the egr valve no it must be the catalytic converter
Way to go Eric o. # 1 mechanic in Avoca ny.
# 1 in World Wide!
He's good but he's not the best in the world.
Sounds like the default strategy check is step one now. The Commander ended up having a blocked oil passage. Great video!
Blocked oil passage? Causing a circuit code? Can you fill me in on this?
@@SouthMainAutoComment was referring to the Jeep Commander Dead Misfire / No Parts Needed video (code P1417). Code came back after a couple of thousand miles. Reset the ECU and the code came back instantly. In the original video at 26:34 it says to inspect the oil passages. I took the intake off and removed the MDS solenoid. It was covered in crap. The magnet was 1/4" larger in diameter, the screens were plugged and one of the screens was gone. Changed the solenoid and so far the code hasn't come back. Thanks again
Nice job Eric O. You know your good when other shops send you their jobs.
It appears Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep is keeping you in business. I'm not being snarky, I'm just noticing the repair videos of these makes. You make good videos. Thank you
Another great SMA video. Those town and country vans can really put you through hair pulling sessions. My 2010 Routan (which is a VW badged Town and Country) with the big 4.0 had a random stalling issue a couple of years ago. Ended up being a faulty egr valve. Put in a new one from napa, stalling fixed. After several weeks, I started getting random EGR range codes. Napa warrantied the part and I swapped it out. It was fine for a little while and then started throwing the same code. Bought one from the dealer (for not much more than the napa part) and it's been fine ever since.
Yes, NAPA isn't on their game as much as Gates is for example. If the part is about the same cost as an OEM, always buy the OEM. I have a few older vehicles and I'm forced to use after market new parts. I never am satisfied with NAPA merchandise.
That van looks like it is well maintained, clean under the hood at least...lol!
Always love watching your videos Eric, learn something new every time!
Enjoy ur videos so much I have to watch twice to understand how u did the electrical test thank you
Awesome video as always! Great job 👍
Hi. I just come to see one of your video them a finish to watched almost all your videos ..they are super interesting and professional 👍👍
Wow, that was packed with good stuff. Thanks Dr. O!
Amen
Smashing job as always :-D
At least the replacement ecm didn't have to be a new one, you always do your best to keep the cost down, i hope the customers appreciates you.
You replace parts when you have no talent for diagnosing. Amazing that a business that claims to be a repair shop pulls stuff like this.
FYI Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics has a recent Volvo repair video you might be interested in
Happens all the time. They read the code, then look at the info of which parts are commonly replaced for that code and fire the cannon. When the light comes back with the same code they get nervous and call in someone like Eric or Keith to actually diagnose the problem. Then charge it all to the customer...
Sweet a new video while watching an old one!
Thank you for another great diagnostic tutorial.
Wow sounds like they fired the parts cannon at it.
Bingo Hall came here to post that :)
@@DontCryAboutIt aka.. Paymore...😬
Great video, never gets old! Thanks.
I always look forward to your videos, thx for sharing.
This video really shows why so many of the repair shops just throw parts at it. The reality is most of us don't have access to the "Erics" in the business so we're all doomed.
Amazing troubleshooting methodology as always.
They get to sell all the parts and we get to fix the car. Story of my life. It sucks sometimes to be this good don't it buddy. Sending love from HB auto
Eric - if you want an idea for an April 1 video how about making a parts-cannon episode, with Dorman content, some bathtub caulk for IM leaks, 3M tape for wiper blade inserts, coat hanger antenna, a few Xmas trees around the mirror, 4 different size mostly bald tires, and weld in a captain’s chair and a make-out knob on the steering wheel. Do the high-beam, low-beam connector swap, so outside lows become inside highs.
I wish I knew electrical like you. When you bust that peco scope it's like a magic trick. Wish I had a mentor like you!
Thought someone was standing there. 1:07 creeeepy, LOL
Great video. My 2007 wrangler has the same motor and had the same issue. Thx for the video.

First time commenting on here Eric. But to quote you "They get to sell all the parts; we get to fix the car". That was classic. I think that quote should be on your SWAG!!!!
It's amazing how many shops just fire the Parts Cannon and hope for the best , they are just simple and I mean very basic mechanics with no back up training , so easy to change this and that without doing true diagnostics to make sure the right things are really done . I do as much my repairs as possible , got so tired of bone head slack job mechanics doing so so work , It's so nice to see a true Technician going that extra mile to find a REAL solution before replacing anything and discussing all options with the client , after all your only as good as your last job and customer service is REALLY EVERYTHING , Word of Mouth goes long way , if you fleece your customers your doors will only stay open so long , when you take care your customers and give real satisfaction , your doors and phone don't stop ringing . Keep up the great work and your vids have helped me out . Great Job again Eric O. !
I have a Dodge Caravan with bad ECM , Only 60,008 kms on the Damm thing just over the mileage , was friggin angry I tell you , fought with Crysler and won , You could not give me Cry/ Dodge POS Product for free ,
Nice to find you guy's that works on them. Have to watch the mechanic channel. To learn how to repair, what we bought.
thanks for reaffirming that the low amp test light wont hurt the ecm ,great video
Great Diag Eric as per usual 👍
superb video dr O . cheers.!
That's why I find it incredible difficult to bring a car to a mechanic. I am 65 and I can count on one hand in my life that I have brought vehicles to mechanics and received the parts cannon approach and nothing is fixed or I have ended up with a fist full of other issues. But I don't have a SMA in my neighborhood otherwise I would. I know there are great mechanics out there but hard to find.
my dad just throws parts at our cars and usually fixes our problems cheaply, sometimes it takes several parts but still cheaper than a shop
@@SurviventheOnslaught I try to avoid that but is does sometimes happen. I have several vehicles so I have the luxury of not having to use the vehicle that is down. Research helps a lot. That's why I watch SMA!!! Idea??? A SMA preferred mechanics list.. sounds risky!

Notification squad representing! love the videos, if I didn't live in Virginia I'd have you fix the broken exhaust manifold bolts on my 2010 Ram 1500 LOL
So often techs/mechanics get a bad rep because of the things you found on this job alone. It is amazing that people do the things they do all for a buck or because they are afraid to say they simply don't know and take a small fee and send it to a more qualified shop. You do such a great job going above and beyond that I swear to God if I can afford to drive my truck up from Texas for the work it needs I'm bringing it to you. It is a pos old 98 F150 with at least 227K miles the odometer stopped working there. I may have to do it in several trips but I believe my wife has family around there anyway. Well within a couple of hundred miles which isn't that far. I love the videos and information your provide, I'm recovering from a major neck surgery I had last Wednesday hope to be able to catch wuw next week. I have some questions. I need an engine rebuild/replace, tranny rebuild replace or a tourque converter and I think the clutches in the rear end are slipping. Figure a nice easy southern truck job so you know how nice it is, when it isn't 140 in the shop anyway hahahaha
Great bonus footage
Nice to catch up on videos! Back to routine with my day, etc. Vision was nice, but routine is better to me! Can't wait to talk about the trip when I see ya....
Great job again like always A+

Good job. Most shops would simply replace parts if the customer would okay it !!
Good find and replacement of the ECM
