I have the same 5 string F-bass for a couple of years, and man,I do love that bass! It’s a killer bass for shure! 🤩👌🏻
What strings do you use? I have that bass. The F Bass Strings were coming in with bad strings.
I have SR 2000s on it now…open core over bridge saddles…(except the G) BUT…I don’t think SR 2000s are being made. They also had some major string defects with dead strings from a new factory.
Let me know!
I thought the end of the video where you talked about playing bass while sitting down was interesting, I'm in a wheelchair, so I've been trying to work out the best way to position my bass
I have been noticing that bass in recent videos. Love how the pickups blend into the paint job and it sounds wonderful. 5-strings really aren't my thing (I often use a heavier gauge strings on one bass, so I usually just it tune down to B-E-A-D when I need that low B sound), but I got to say that BN5 rocks!
at 6:06 you finally explained to me my posture issue. I love you scott you are the literal best teacher of bass ever, thank you.
I've got a Dingwall combustion three-pickup and it has a 4-way selector dial for the different pickup configurations. Works much better for me than knobs and switches as I just never stop messing with the controls!
Never quite understand why Scott avoids the fan frets. We love our Dingwall. C'mon man! Show us what you got on the multi-scales! That plug out of the way, that is a VERY SWEET bass, Scott, as always.
@@shelleyberry188 His colleague Ian Allinson did an EXCELLENT comparison between the classic Gibson and ultra-modern Dingwall D-roc so the channel has it covered. To be honest, as much as I rate my Dingwall I think the main thing is to have a bass that INSPIRES you. Doesn't matter what it is, how many strings or frets or pickups if it makes you want to pick it up and play it it's THE BEST BASS IN THE WORLD YEAHHH!!!!
@@shelleyberry188 Probably because if you get your hands on a really good bass you might find that there is no real advantage to fanned frets. Many luthiers can even make shortscale fives and up with phenomenal B string performance. The idea that scale length alone yields a better B is outdated. The nail in the coffin for that old trope was discovering that the best performing string sets for me have been 120 to 40. Takes very little effort to get massive performance with a good bass and low action. Most guys are shocked when they play my basses. How could it be that easy? 😎
@@Brad5161 Oh we know this fact, but we love all the basses, so we always like to spread a little love to our fan-fretted family. Along with the J's, P's, J-P's, T-Birds, headless, bodiless, fretless, loud and soft - we are large and bass charged. ;)
@@KimSE4 This we heartily co-sign. Every bass we've had the opportunity to play - those we still hold and those we've let go to other good homes over time - has been the best bass in the world at that moment! And so the next one will be too. ROCK ON!
Bass up, mid up, treble down. Very interesting vibe. I think I'm going to spend some time experimenting with this new fangled vibe. I can already hear that my 3-way mid toggle switch has more effect on the sound. Intriguing.
I run the bass at 80%, mids 100% and treble all the way off and just modulate the tone control for extra brightness
I must say, and this is pretty random, but I actually really enjoyed the camera work with this. It in a way brings a vibe as if he’s giving you a personal lesson himself. Great look and atmosphere sbl.
I got addicted to 5 string in 1997 and haven't looked back since! My #1 is a Warwick Corvette $$. I also recently delved into the realm of 6 string, picking up a Kiesel Icon, which has a surprisingly narrow nut width for a 6. If I pick up a 4 string these days, it feels like a guitar lol
I have a Carvin Icon 5 and it's a incredible bass!
However I have it strung with a high C string not a low B and I'll never go back to the low B.
Good luck with your kiesel 🤞
@@ImaginaryMachines I got hooked on the low notes so the low B is here to stay for me 😉 awesome to hear from a fellow Carvin/Kiesel player!
One of the best sounding 5s I've ever played was a Corvette $$. I wish I could have gotten on with the neck and string spacing because that thing sounded nasty.
@@fistinair1979 bummer the neck didn't feel comfortable for you... I really like the neck carve and string spacing on all Warwick except the ones (I forget the name) where they basically use the next neck size up for less strings (6 string neck for a 5 string bass, etc)
@@chrisggoodwin777 funny enough I bought a factory second Rockbass fretless neck for a parts bass I built and that one I love. 🤷
After your review of the five-string basses and its philosophy, I bought a five-string bass and have been playing it for three years now. I'm glad that you switched to five-string bass, I wonder how you will use it.😊
That F sounds so good! About 2 more months and my BN 6 Deluxe will be finished . Can’t wait to get my hands on it 🤤🤤 Thanks for the sweet member discount , SBL! 🔥
Wait, there's a SBL discount? How much?
@@strathound yep! 10% off a build at F Bass . Many other discounts as well. Bergantino, Trickfish, and Fodera to name a few.
The Schecter Elite-5 SLS has similar specs > and available for LEFTIES!!!
On all of my basses , I use to turn the bass and middle , mainly 50 &250 hz, all the way up and add some treble for the buzz ..Best for my gusto at home but doesnt work for recordings or live gigs...The more bass ,the better ...
Been doing some research on f bass recently and I REALLY REALLY WANT ONE!!! Sounds and looks AHMAZIN!!!
I went 5 string in the 2000's and won't go back. Added a 6 string bass but for me and the music I end up playing, it is more of a novelty but does come in handy for full sounding chords if we end up with just a guitar/bass/drums for a set.
Lovely bass. I always thought posture was strict!! when I'm sitting down playing I find it very difficult to hit the high notes! Great lesson! These and other videos have helped me improve my technique and my knowledge of music theory! I love your podcast!
Very cool!..... But please boys & girls: play what you are comfortable with. My feeling when extended note range became accessible was; It is a bass. A 5 appealed to me immediately since I'd heard plenty of recordings(jazz, Classical, & rock) where the existing bass guitar didn't get those pedal tones. Enjoy it!
My Bass is also a 5 String but it's a fully functional one complete with Volume knobs for each pickup.
😁
I have an Ibanez SR500 series and that bass gives me exactly the feeling of how it feels an extension of my body. Been playing with the idea of getting a 5 string and I loved the Ibanez so much wasn't sure if I should just stick with Ibanez or not but this F Bass seems to share a lot of similarities in terms of body shape, tone diversity, controls, etc. Great quick review of the bass Scott, definitely put it on my radar!
I have a custom 35" scale bass and that 45° angle is spot on. I thought I was kind of alone with having the the boby turned more so on my hip rather than flat on my stomach. Nice info
I have an LTD Active 5 string with EQ. Having the EQ is great to really dial in the bass sound, just don't like the need of batteries... always get nervous around show time and end up swapping out batteries prematurely just to make sure the bass doesn't loose power mid gig.... but it is fun for jam nights at an open mic night. lots of flexibility on the sound. my primary Bass for my bands is a Fender American Pro 5 string P Bass. Simple, good bass.
Keep the bass unplugged when not in use. There are battery testers that plug into your output jack. I don't use them, my basses give sonic warning when they're near the end of life. Funny thing, some develope a cool growl, sounding better than ever.
Most of my basses have active bypass. Zero anxiety. Going passive typically just means adding some gain at the amp to compensate and use the amp's EQ if needed. Simple.
Preamps are often redundant. And most don't seem to realize that.
Yeah, learned pretty quick to keep it unplugged when not in use. This active bass doesn't have a passive switch, so the bass just starts to act unruly/cut out all together when the battery is almost dead or entirely dead.
I ought to look into a tester for it since it really gives me no indication of how the battery is doing. I now mostly use it for open mic nights so it doesn't see as much use as it did with my other bands.
Already got my BN5 Deluxe order in! Can't wait
BOOM. You'll LOVE it mate!
Love, love, love that bass! Not only does it sound good, but it looks fantastic! the coloring on the fade is amazing! And, again, shirt game is on point! Back to the original shirt from the beginning of the series! Mom would be proud!
I bought a BN5 a year ago and I’ve hardly played any of my other basses since. It just sounds and feels sooo good.
Definitely my dream bass actually
It's just a more powerful jazz bass but damn it sounds amazing and looks killer
What a beauty !
Dude it’s an ibanez shape all over all day. They just contour to your body all over, simple. They feel great.
I played an F Bass at Bass Center in LA in the 80's and I thought it was the best sounding bass I had ever heard, but even then it was $3500 and far, far, far out of my price range. Beauty!
What kind of strings are you using with this bass?
The key to a great 5 string is in the set up . When the b string resonate like an E string not, flapping around bearly autobial . When the b sound as tight and clear as an e string, you have a great 5 string.
The Fbass Alain Caron fretless is my bucket list bass.
That Bass sounds 👌🏿
These days, I'm experimenting with Bass and Mid all the way off, Treble at 12 o'clock/halfway, Pickup blend at 11 o'clock or at the center. 😎
Really great bass. There is something about the strings that have this sound even when the electronics aren't turned on. WHICH brand/model/guage STRINGS ARE THOSE? I think they're worth trying. It's interesting that F built the scale length in 34.5", kind of midway between standard length and what Ibanez (BTB) and Lakland have been doing.
F-bass manufactures their own strings that are tapered and their bridges are only set up to fit tapered strings (for their stock basses, of course! Who knows if there's some custom stuff going on here)
@@milanimorphs Labella actually makes those strings in collaboration/for us!
Standard string gauge for a 5-string would be .128" to .43" 🙂
@@amehdi13 should have paid more attention when I visited the factory! Good to know!
A 4-string passive F Bass has been my main axe since the early 90s, I've never found anything better to upgrade to.
F bass is the tone that's always lived in my head. Playability and comfort is off the charts. Ruined all my other basses for me :)
Am i the only one that laughed when he said EFF bass? Emphasising that F.. great video and great bass man! Keep up the good work 😎
What strings do you use? I have that bass. The F Bass Strings were coming in with bad strings.
I have SR 2000s on it now…open core over bridge saddles…BUT…I don’t think SR 2000s are being made. They also had some major string defects with dead strings from a new factory.
Let me know!
This is my favorite bass now too because of you Scott lol
Just by hearing it, looking at how nice looking it is and watching you having so much fun playing this F bass is just convincing!
I have the same bass! What strings do you use? The F Bass Strings were coming in with bad strings.
I have SR 2000s on it now…open core over bridge saddles…BUT…I don’t think SR 2000s are being made. They also had some major string defects with dead strings from a new factory.
Let me know!
Even tho I’ve never played a music man bongo, John myung is my favorite bassist and my dream is his signature. Just ordered a ray35hh tho
About time too! I love 5 string and can't understand why people still buy 4 string when 5 string are so readily available now. WELL DONE! Great playing as usual too.
Cats are still buying 4 string Basses because they sound better.
1. If you use drop d tuning a lot, a low B gets in the way (and playing the d on the B string isn't the same thing). 2. Slapping is generally better with a 4 string. 3. The low b often sounds tonally different to other strings with many 34 string basses. 4. The low b is most useful when you're playing high up in the fretboard. I prefer to play the same notes lower in the fretboard tonally. I'd prefer a high c instead in most situations. There's a reason many virtuosos prefer 4. I use a mix, but would always prefer a fretted 4 and a fretless 6.
Made in the Hammer! I'm the first in my family in generations not to have worked in the steel mills. Check out Hamilton's finest rock & roll band... Teenage Head!
That's the bass I was hoping you'd give away last time, and that I would receive... I love that finish. Unfortunately the nearest F-Bass retailer to me is about 5 hours away.
Esse baixo é uma máquina !!! 🙏👏👏
Get this man a signature bass!
I notice that you pick right on top of the pickups. I have trouble getting used to feeling the pickups under my finger. Should I just get over it?
Really nice and delicious, and I've had expensive 5 string basses with electronics handmade, but wouldn't trade it for my 37 years 4 string ESP I Navigator Jazzbass. Yes, I guess you're allowed to be a little conservative.
Falling in love with F-Bass from afar. I’m afraid to pick one up in the store as I will likely go into debt for it if it ever touches my hands. But questions for Scott: is the BN5 a “better” bass than the VF5? Is there tonal overlap between them? Do they feel different to you whilst playing, or is it more of an electronics difference than a structural thing?
Thanks!
there is tonal overlap between most of the F-bass range, the big step change is the BN Deluxe because that has a different preamp and a new generation of pickups. BN vs VF is much less, they do have different body shapes but if you really want to get into the fine details I would recommend contacting F-bass themselves (they are lovely people) and they will be able to give you a more in-depth break down!
@@devinebass first of all, wow. You guys actually read and reply. That’s awesome. Thanks! Secondly, if you ever have some side work worth about $4k, I’m your man. (I have no idea what I would be doing but anything to fund my first F-Bass short of organ sales will be considered…well, I do have two kidneys, soooo…)
Thanks again!
🕺🏼🤠
It might be a good instrument for own pleasure but I will always use a 4 string when instructing because most of the beginners have 4 stringers. So when a student player looks at your hands they can identify which string and which fret you play much easier
F Basses are amazing! Even their 6 strings are super playable and I’m a basic four string guy. That bass is gorgeous!
The P basses are now scowling at you haha. What a beautiful looking and sounding bg
The deeper Tones are the best, and some slides are not any more nesserery with the deep b String. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😊👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🎸
How does this bass compare to the Yamaha Nathan East signature in your opinion
Beautiful bass and a nice tone palette!!!
Fantastic sounding bass
🤤🤤🤤
I have a BNF5. It's a great fretless. I have bright flats on it and sounds great!
I prefer playing with the classical guitar position. It just feels more natural to me. Definitely not the norm so I feel some pressure to switch.
Nice bass Scott! What brand and kind of strings are on that bass?
l come from same town as F bass. They make great instruments. For me I like 4 string. but if you listen to modern music 5 makes sense.
Hi Scott, thank you for showing this bass and its tonal variations. Would you mind clarifying your EQ? Is it "all the way up" or "all the way off"? I can't quite make the distinction, other than watching the knob positions; hence I assume that bass all the way "up", mid all the way "up", and treble all the way "off". Also, what are the center frequencies of the bass, mid, and treble EQ that are being adjusted? I can't seem to find such info on FBass BN Series website. Thank you much!
Rich Brown mode, treble off, mids and lows maxed.
You can get alot of tonal variations adjusting the two volumes or balance knob. You can set the EQ flat or more towards a brighter sound then fatten it up by rolling back the passive tone knob.
All of the F Basses I owned had static centers on the EQ... not adjustable. I've found switchable or sweepable centers to largely to be useless. Example: on my basses with Bartolini NTMB preamps with one or two mid centers, I typically don't use the mid control.
You also have a coil tap. George F. built in a ton of flexibility with only six knobs. Experiment... it's fun and informative.
And that's not even mentioning hand position and touch.
@@Brad5161 This is always helpful reminder - the tonal variety these days throughout the signal chain is just off the charts - sometimes that slight twist of the knob is a pot-sweetener for a certain space and time - kick it up a notch or 11.
Damnit, how do y'all keep us chasing these bass rabbit holes 🎸🎸🙃🙃💗💗
Canadian luthiers baby! Some of the best in the world. Kinal, Dingwall, Fbass.
my favorite bassist from my favorite band plays bn5 and bn4's all the time! he has a killer tone, i wish i could play one of these sometime
Just great you found a bass that really fits. I found that Warmoth gecko medium 5 is that for me which is great I’ve made a few with different fretless / fretted and different electronics. 35 inch scale is what works for me. Anyone who can I’d recommend trying one out.
OMG... Wonderful Demo. I have one.
Beautiful color 😮
Hi Scott! Love that bass!!! What strings have you got on there please?.. I see the f bass strings are core overvalue bridges usually. I need to try those strings also!
Thanks
🙏🙏
These are Dunlop superbright nickels!!!
Sounds like COVID delirium, to me... 🤪 Feel better!
Maybe, lol! ;)
bass is slick, shirt is slicker
That is a beautiful bass.... I can only dream about owning a work of art like that!!!!
Did see you were playing this bass in a lot of the recent videos. Really lovely looking instrument, sounds great too.
I too would be outright giddy with a new bass of that quality. I guess I’m glad I got a great bass(or two) already lol!
Oh hey, you found my bass. You can go ahead and send it back to me now. But seriously what an awesome finish.
just have coil taps on my gibson eb5. vol/vol/tone sounds pretty dam good. love the fade on your f-bass nice
How much does this bass cost? Thanks in advance 😊
They range from $4-6000 USD 🤑
@@devinebass Ah. 😐
Looks nice, sounds nice ... what string spacing?
I've been pining for an F-Bass for almost three whole decades now. It's kinda pathetic, actually. I'm glad you like them. I still fancy one or two before I die, if I can ever swing the ticket price. George & co make damn fine guitars.
Used. There was a period in the Nineties where this range of boutiques were being given away on the secondhand market. That still baffles me but I definitely took advantage of that. 😎
F- Bass..what brand and cost? I'm searching for a bass that is made to withstand the humidity in the Philippines 🇵🇭 can you recommend something for me Scott?
Yall should check Ryan Stasik of Umphreys Mcgee. Plays the bn5 as well a lot.
What a gorgeous bass! Right on brother!
Made in Canada. Long live us Canucks. Foremost user, Quebec's own Alain Caron. The Master of the fretless 6-string F bass.
Absolutely Crazy Greatness! 🤟😝
I *almost* bought a 4 string (after playing only 5 for like 23 years)... Whew... Dodged a bullet there 😅
What speaker cabs are you using here
Cheers, Dude
Isnt all the eq on full just like a general boost?
I ordered a Bn5 2 months ago, 14 more months for it to arrive 😭 can’t wait to have it with me!
Fbass is INSANE! That’s true! Fire🔥
When playing with my band, I'm standing upright, so no bass on my lap. What is the best position in that case?
What a beauty!😍 An that sound…🔥🔥🔥
Interesting, but, what's the price of this bass?
It would be cool if you described the video in the description.
Love the jazz bass!
Honestly five strings are the best. Super versatile and beautiful instrument
great vid! love the bass, although Im a neck through kinda guy.
It would be awesome if you could get your hands on a Neuser Courage 15th anniversary or maybe give Neuser fretless bridge system a review :-D there's not much info to find about it online, but if someone were to find a bass like that and review it, it would be you!
Out of curiosity how much does it weigh?
after seeing u play it its become my dream bass
It would be handy if you put the make and model in the description.
I loved my five-string jazz bass. The "d" on the "b" string was a drop "d" for me.
F Bass is on my personal top 5 list of inaccessible (to me) beauties. 😍
Those basses sound amazing
