This is what every "reviewer" out there should do. This is what we "listeners" want. The BEST roundup/shootout i have ever witnessed. Im a metalhead and every shootout video i find out there its either slaphand, jazzy moves, or some weak attempt to play something for ME. You did it exactly the way everybody else should be doing it. Short simple elegant and of course.....the riffs has to be the same whatever style you play. I found the Warwick to be greater than i expected. Le fay surprised me (never heard it b4) Dingwall sounds too "solo" for me and the MM is maybe just ok. Peavey too. Im going to listen many more times but today my money is on the W and the LF :-) Thank you. Thank you Thank you.
Peavey and Dingwall were my favorites! Under some themes I kinda liked the Warwick as well, but overall is not my taste. I am surprised on how disappointing the Music Man sounded to me!
This is my exact reaction! I've played a Peavey Cirrus 5 for years so I was obviously biased going in, but it, along with the Dingwall, was just far more balanced sounding to me than any of the other ones. That Stingray sounded absolutely horrible on my monitors!
I am horribly dissapointed as well ! I always thought that 2 MM's Humbuckers give much more... "punch", but they're super trebly as I can see ! But Dingwall, Peavey and Warwick kicked ass. Le Fay... as I thought.
Yeah, compared to the Peavey with the clean tone, the Warwick sounded a little flat and lifeless. Now, with distortion, the Warwick sounded great. Then again, not every setup is right for every instrument.
Except the Music Man sounded best for slap by far. But the bassist left the slap EQ for fingerstyle, when he should have rolled off the tone knob. But overall, the Music Man sounded puncher and better than the rest. The neck thru design of the Peavey makes it poor for slap. So it was Music Man, Dingwall, the last one, and the Peavey and Warrick tied for last place. Sorry.
This format is an excellent way to hear the difference between basses. Nathan's precise playing and meticulous recording left all the differences to the basses. I think based on this, the Peavey is the all-around best bass. Surprised? I'm not. I've owned all kinds of basses, amps, and etc, and Peavey can really make stuff. But Dingwall? WOW. I had never heard one really played before. It is the kind of pure piano tone that Entwistle was always headed toward with his Alembics. That is a fantastic bass. The other three did not impress me, and I was surprised to find the Music Man kinda taking last place, in my opinion. Looking forward to Nathan's other vids ...
Great video man! Usually I like Warwick, but to me, today, Peavey and Dingwall are the winners. BTW congrats for the collaboration with Devin Townsend. What a blast!!!
Agreed. I'm almost always in favor of Warwick in any sort of comparison, but in this specific demonstration, overall, I would list: Le Fay, Cirrus, and then a toss up between the Thumb & NG2. Both excelled in different categories, and both have equally arousing sexy factors. My biased opinion would choose the Thumb over the Ng2. Last and certainly least is that strange looking Fender. 😜
THAT FINGERSTYLE DRIVE TONE OF THE MUSIC MAN AND THE DINGWALL SHOOK ME TO MY CORE. THEY SOUNDED LIKE GROWLING BEASTS OF THE UNDERWORLD AND I AM IN LOVE WITH THEM NOW.
The dingwall and le fay seemed the most well rounded and versatile. The warwick was very good for the slap and distortion. The Peavy was decent all around. But I made a few stink faces to the music man
Stewart Ross thank you. People seem to forget that flagship model or not, the thumb is one of at least 6 Warwick models, and most have a true neck pickup.
This is what instruments should actually be. I love that we get a clear sound of the open low B. So many 5 string reviews barely use it, and never use it open. And that baseline used in the beginning was absolutely wicked.
When I got my Cirrus it felt like it was just made for me. I was gigging a lot at the time and wanted a backup bass just in case the electronics ever went out. So I did the only thing that made sense... I bought another Cirrus. I've had them for about 20 years now.
DickEnchilada I’ve got a Peavey Grind 5 BXP (think Squier to Fender, as the Grind is to the Cirrus), and I absolutely love it. The tone, the slender neck, the sustain, it’s just a really nicely-crafted instrument. I’d love to snag a Cirrus 5, but it’s too pricey for my budget. Maybe one day.
The sound of peavey and the mm stingray is just awesome. When slapped the peavey got the better tone at first. When it comes to the look... Maaan do i love that green
The Warwick and Musicman were both really bad tonally on the B and E. I've read a ton of reviews on the Warwick Thumb bass and a friend has one. For 3k-5k for a Warwick Thumb I expect a lot more. When the Peavey and less expensive Dingwall blow it away where is the 1500 dollar price difference justified, unless you like saying I play a German made Warwick? It's a beautiful Bass but for me the premium price isn't justified.
The Peavey and Dingwall for me. The Peavey was solid in every style with a nice bottom that filled the the low end nicely. The Dingwall has that nice snarl in the upper mids that give it a more defined tone while still filling the sound.
Years ago Peavey promoted a "clinic tour" with Neil Zaza, Bill "budda"Dickens, and Bobby Rock. They were ALL totally awesome. The Budda was playing a Peavey Cirrus 6 string, it sounded incredible....!!! Bobby Rock had a huge drum kit...he played like 7 or 8 different drum styles at one time..fuc**ng nuts !!! ALL were INCREDIBLE...!!!!
I'll say, as someone who never thought they'd own a MusicMan because they always sounded too scooped...try out a Bongo5. I now own a Bongo and it's because of those neo pickups and that 4 band EQ. The high and low mid adjust makes such a huge difference. Plus, you can pick a used Bongo5 up for almost half price of a new one. :)
Dude get one. I absolutely love mine. The multiscale gives the low B a serious punch, and they're very light considering the size. I've got a few videos on my channel of me playing it
They all sound good under Nate's skilled fingers. I was surprised how distinctive the Warwick and the Musicman are; they really have their own sound. The Dingwall fairs very well.
Dingwall and Lefay were overall most convincing to me, with special mention for the Peavey for it's neck pickup clean sound. If I had to chose one, I'd buy the Dingwall.
It's not a typical Warwick. The best one is probably one with a wenge neck and ovangkol body. This one looks like maple, which changes the sound and feel dramatically. Personally, I have an NG2, but I love Thumbs too!
So happy to see demos of a 5 string where the B string is actually used. Sick to death of dudes "demoing" 5 strings and playing crap jazz solos and neglecting the low strings.
I’ve owned quite a few “nice” basses but my Cirrus 5 has been my number 1 because nothing comes close to how great these sound. If you see one don’t hesitate, get one!
I agree with this dude, they can do it all and in my opinion just sound the most full in every style of playing/sounds variation. Really all comes down to watch each person likes
@Mike Murphy sorry but Spector doesn't have the growl like Warwick does. Only ones that are similar are Warwick Streamer Lx and Spector Euro Lx. Only thing that is same is their body design. In terms of tone, electronics, pickups,... they are completely different.
Mike Murphy Not true are all! True that the owner of Warwick copied the NS-2 for the original Streamer (I actually owned a 80’s and it sounded just like a Spector with NO growl), but NO Spector has the distinct Growl of a Warwick. None. I own a NS-2J and a Warwick Jazzman Corvette FNA and the Warwick growls and the Spector sounds like a Spector. No growl.
Man. That Dingwall. The tone of the lower notes on the E and down to the B is just amazing.
The Warwick Is to play Brbr Deng
Well, yeah duh
Of course this test cannot be completed until it has played

I'm with Jayme. That Dingwall has made me GAS rather badly for one. Crazy tone through every demo section.
@@julianfairall2722 Agreed!
That Dingwall is MASSIVE!! Totally blown away.
i have both an ng2 and a super j dingwall. i play both both fingerstyle and with a pick. tone is amazing.

I feel like Warwick’s just have such a snappy punchy sound and I love it, I feel like it’s just so unique compared to the others.
And this video confirms why I want a f*cking Peavy Cirrus
Peavey Cirrus is SO SMOKIN' hot. I own a bunch of them. Best basses ever.
Old reply here but this video is why I bought a Peavey Cirrus 5. Love it. Amazing feel. That Dingwall sounds damn good too.

agreed, the MM was surpringly thin.
Yeah it was pretty cringe. Which is weird, because they're not exactly cheap basses, either.
That musicman bass is used for more deeper songs. You can see that it does pretty good in drive. Not in the others since its more of a metal bass.
I have a MM and I love them. But it's not the most versatile, so maybe grab that Dingwall for other stuff
I thought the music man sounded badass
Im shocked at how great the Peavy sounds and how thin the Warwick sounds.
I agree I have a similar Warwick and I love it but compared to the peavey and the Dingwall it's weak and yeah disappointed in the music man
If he turned the treble down and boosted the bass just a little the Warwick would sound devastating. They have way to much treble from the get go.
@@brandonelliott7399 agreed mine can be very harsh if not eq'd properly but with some fine tuning it's really quite good
Because it’s a Thumb. Did you use your eyeballs to look at the pickups positions?
Stewart Ross thank you. People seem to forget that flagship model or not, the thumb is one of at least 6 Warwick models, and most have a true neck pickup.
The Cirrus killed it.
I have a MM 5HH Special. If the treble was rolled off some it would have sounded much better.

The Dingwall was an outstanding sounding bass. But my always favorite is the buttery smooth sounds of a Warwick.
I think the Peavy was WAY better sounding than I expected! Wow! The Dingwall was pretty good too. Disappointed by the Warwick and MusicMan.
Ikr everyone's saying they didn't like it but I think it was just a different kind of sound to the others
Music man was good. . Its sounds like polyphia, it fits their genre
Musicman is too flabby on that low string. But their 4 strings sound great. Classic sound.
The Warwick and Musicman were both really bad tonally on the B and E. I've read a ton of reviews on the Warwick Thumb bass and a friend has one. For 3k-5k for a Warwick Thumb I expect a lot more. Peavey, Dingwall and Le Fay best sounds to me.. Dingwall with the clearest low end on open B so would be my choice of I had to pick one
the 37" low B is nice and tight. Can also put a low F# string on there as well (for super low F#-D tuning) and it still sounds great :O

Wow that Peavey really surprised me. I am a Warwick fan but that Peavey was killer. Excellent shootout vid!
Warwicks have a distinctive woodiness to their sound - the trick is to replace the preamps or pickups for something more sonically malleable...
@@cd0u50c9 I personally love the Warwick tone. It sits perfectly in the mix.
Love that Dingwall and Musicman
Peavey and Dingwall damn hot sound
All my life I considered Music Man the most versatile bass. After this video, I have only one thought - to buy a Dingwall and forget about MM.
Think something was wrong with music man bass pickup?

That Peavey is amazing. Making me wanna get one
It's a shame that these basses have been discontinued, they're just incredible
Peavey all the way with these 5.

I really dig the Stingray. It’s got a super unique tone compared to the others and I love it.
That Dingwall was incredible dude
Surprised at how nice that Dingwall bass sounds. I didn't expect it to have such a nice full tone like that, it's definitely my favourite.

I'm with Michael B. The Peavey Cirrus is best out of all. Those basses are surprising. Even the ones that aren't made in the USA.
That last riff was so awesome and I really think showed how tight and articulate as a bassist.
The one I least expected but the Peavey absolutely owns this comparison.
