The first 5-string bass in metal?? Probably (Bass Tales Ep.3)

- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2024
- Today we’re back with Episode 3 of our Bass Tales series featuring David Ellefson, legendary co-founder and bassist of iconic 'Big 4' thrash metal titans Megadeth.
In this week's video David invited us to his home in Arizona for a guided tour of his personal bass collection, including what we believe to be one of the first 5-string basses to ever be used in a metal band (and on a groundbreaking metal album). This bass couldn’t be more heavy metal if it tried.
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

Dave deserves The Peace Nobel price just for puting up with Mustaine so long
I think they meant 'prize' but their writing was cryptic.
@Mister Problematic Best mistake ever hahaha
He knows, peace sells.
Do you mean Putin? English pun is short for Putin?!
Facts😂😂😂
The fact that Ellefson got 86’d from Megadeth but we still celebrate people like Jimmy Page or Stephen Tyler is insane to me.
From what i understand he didn't even do anything wrong, just that nobody wanted to see an old guy fuck on camers😂
Get Steve digorgio in this to talk about this fretless bass in metal since I’m fairly certain he was one of the first to bring that into metal
him and sean malone would be great
@@oktaperdana9414 what band is he from?

Not that much really...
@@IRieAsAVirus37 Oh alright, would you care to explain why? How much of his work have you listened to?
@@IRieAsAVirus37 I'm sure you can do better, right?
OMG YES
You should do Robert Trujillo next or Geezer Butler
Edit: Victor Wooten, Jason Newsted, John Myung, John Paul Jones, Geddy Lee and Gail Ann Dorsey
@MomoTheBellyDancer I think wooten has some damn funky lines like "U can't hold no groove". I would argue that he isn't musically boring, since "music" isn't about just the melody aspect either.
@MomoTheBellyDancer Ever heard of Vital Techtones?
@MomoTheBellyDancer I kind of agree BUT Wooten explains a lot of aspect of music and bass differently than the majority of musicians. He is a one of a kind IMO
I would love to see Trujillo
I would lovs to see john myung
“You can get in a fight in an alley and kick someone’s ass with it.” Now that’s my kind of bass!
Reading the comments... no-ones mentioning Alex Webster?! He's a player that does stand out bass work in his genre.
He’s my biggest inspiration! Would love to see Scott do a video on him one day.
Alex Webster is one of the most outstanding metal bassist's of all time 🤘🏼
And what about Eric Langlois from Cryptopsy? That stuff was INSANE
Although it can only barely be heard on the album, Jason Newsted used a 5-string on ...And Justice for All. Still, all respect to both him and Ellefson, I love the bass playing of both
It's a 5-string Wal bass (the bass featured in the 'One' video)
First Metal album recorded with 5-String bass is Back for the Attack Dokken. When I bought the album, I knew something was different. This would be Nov 87. 🤟🏻
He was also ripping 5 string alembics long before 1990. I don't understand the clickbait titles in this series.
@@Tu3ePh0x200 Conquistadores is the first metal video with a 5 strings i believe Port Royal is from 1987 but i don't think you need a 5 strings to play on the album
It would only be the first 5-string 8n metal because Jason Newstead's parts were mixed out of ...And Justice for All.
Yea I wouldn't claim "first" about anything in music. There is always some guy sitting a shack in Siberia or something that already did what you thought had never been done before.
I think what they mean is first 5 string bass made for metal. There were plenty of fives and probably a few metal bassists using them, but they weren’t engineered as metal basses until Jackson cane along with the flipped p and all.
@@thebassphil1160 That's a fair point. But it was framed as being the first used on a Metal record.
Not really, Yes Jason is seen playing a five string WAL bass in the video for "One" and on the "Justice" tour.
But according to both Jason himself, the recording engineer and the band's crew, he recorded the entire album using a four string Steinberger headless bass.
i.servimg.com/u/f44/15/74/43/12/tm/screen10.png
And if you look up the "And justice for Jason" remastered version of that album, you will hear that there's no low B anywhere on the album.
@@RastaSaiyaman Even still, the One video came out more than a year before the Rust in Peace sessions began. Not that it matters because none of Jason's parts made it to the album.
Ellefson is that cool uncle everybody wish they had
[Nope, this comment didn't age well]
Yeah but nobody has such a cool uncle.
I catched up with him after a masterclass he is son chill and laid back
Uhh
oh boy this didnt age well did it
That did not age well
I humbly suggest that Billy Gould would be a great addition to this series.
Yeah!!!! Matter of time !!
I agree. Huge influence on me when I was a teen...
Very Underrated.
Hugely underrated as a bassist and songwriter...and a huge influence. Beam Billy up Scotty!
he is too underrated, one of the best in metal
David Ellefson underrated? He's been praised by fans and critics since the 80 's , made the cover of countless music magazines around the world since that time and is still hitting the spotlight like on this video. What must happen for him being not underrated?
@@bassmaster5387 nah, he still underrated. he must be mentioned along with harris, burton, sheehan, myung, etc. probably one of the greatest pick player ever
@@oktaperdana9414 agreed, he's still underrated
@@bassmaster5387 Praised by _fans,_ of Megadeth, is the key thing here. He gets nowhere near the praise from the wider metal community that Burton does, and - very unpopular opinion here - I feel like a good chunk of the praise Burton gets is rooted in his tragic death. If you objectively analyze his technique vs. Ellefson's, Ellefson is the more impressive player hands down. Everybody brings up Anasthesia but even I managed to master that one back when I was a complete green gill of a bassist, it's really not as flashy as everyone seems to think. In the grand majority of Metallica's early albums Burton wasn't really doing too much aside from underlining the guitar riffs as you'd expect. Ellefson, meanwhile, occasionally gets to shine with cool riffs like those found in Fatal Illusion, Hook In Mouth, Five Magics, My Last Words, and many more. Even his regular riffing in Holy Wars outclasses most of Burton's riffs.
In no way am I trying to shit on Burton, he WAS very important in developing Metallica's sound with his knowledge of harmony theory. Just saying that he has a bit of an overhyped legacy that tends to unfairly overshadow awesome bassists like Ellefson and even Newsted.

@@thanksgivingsandwich Not everything I say is sincere
This is why I like multiscale basses. A 37" scale allows you to thin up your B string gauge and then it doesn't sound as "farty"
David Ellefson is an impressive player and a great guy, I really enjoyed watching this video, thank you for sharing!
A Rex Brown's episode would be a blast!
I love that thing at 10:07 like "hey let's play this major third to finish the lick" in his mind and his face shows "mh.. why not ..?"
Just like the Billy Sheehan video, I can't say I'm a fan of Megadeth, or metal, but how can you not like a video with such a nice and entertaining person? And you can tell he's enjoying making the video as well. Good job, thanks to all those involved.
The older Ellefson gets, the more you can tell he's from Minnesota....... He sooo looks like an Upper Midwesterner!
Yahhh…Soon he’ll be okey-dokey to go ice-fishin’ again.Yahhh…

Jeff Walker of Carcass used a five-string Aria Pro II bass on and after their Symphonies Of Sickness album (1989), though. :) Maybe even in 1988 on their debut album.
Was going to say this myself.
Jeff Pilson played a 5-string on Dokken’s Back for the Attack album in 1987.
Yep!
Probably a Jackson too, huh?
@@johngilbert1634 I think his original one was from a company called Ripley but he played Jackson for a lot of years so it stands to reason that he had those too.

@@badnoodlez I think he's often overlooked because he uses a pick. Suits him down to the ground though.
@@fuzzydunlop1988 I’ve always thought the same, but Ellefson can fly with his fingers too. With an interview with Frank Bello he fucking tears it up. He also does bring up good points in that interview on why he uses a pick. I only use fingerstyle, but every now and then ill secretly jam with a pick after all there are no limits in music :)
We should show some love for Jason Newsted. I know he is not so much in the metal music any more but he needs some attention too. Lets make him happy with our love.

It would be amazing to see Jason show off some of his bass collection for sure. Love Jason.
@@Maggai No offense to other musicians of that time and now but Jason has really good clothing style. Down to the earth guy really honest and with huge heart. His bass collection is also very nice and badass. No funny ,stupid shapes or colors.
@@vidanmitkovski7785 I just love how humble and nice Jason is.
The first 5 string bass used in Metal was used in 1988 by Running Wild bassist Jens Becker. Guys like Dave Ellifson and Alex Webster made it more common though.
I was searching for this comment!
Jeff Pilson, Back for the Attack Dokken Nov 2, 1987. Esp listen to Burning Like a Flame. Unmistakable. Threw me for a loop. I'm pretty confident he used a 5er on Black Album.
@@iamgribs Jason used a multitude of basses to record the black album, but the main bass for the album was a 4 string Spector NS-2
Cool interview ! Dave Ellefson is a great player and such a nice guy . I mixed sound for Megadeth 86 -87 . At that time everyone in the band was using BC Rich guitars . Then Ellefson and Mustaine started playing Jacksons . A real game changer in terms of look and sound .
To think about it, idk if Ellefson played a BC Rich bass. He's just so symbolic as a Jackson bass player
But that BC Rich guitar tone and sound on Peace Sells is ... magic.
Ahh! You were there during the classic line up! I LOVED it when Gar and Chris were in the band….That was a special time!
Ellefson just seems like such a cool dude and definitely the kind of guy that you would love to hang out with and get a lesson from
Not a slave to any brand. Whatever gives the sound/feel he's looking for. Awesome.
GEEZER! GEEZER! GEEZER! ... It'd be great to hear from Geezer Butler. or Dusty Hill maybe Ian Hill. I'd like to make a suggestion as humbly as I can. Could a new Title logo be made for this series of video's loved all 4 so far but I almost went right by this one because I didn't actually get what it was right off. a nice easy to get it logo for the series would be a wonderful add. thank you for your time be safe be happy and please. Rock on!!
If only we would have gotten that Dusty Hill video...
Newstead played a 5 string ESP in 88 or 89 on Justice tour. so he probably is the first
and on the black album in 91
I was thinking exactly the same thing. What makes Ellefson's claim so painfully absurd is that it's so easily disproven by almost anyone: Jason Newstead is seen playing (miming really but still..) a 5 string bass in the video for 'One'. It's a Wal he used to record some of the parts nobody could hear on ...And Justice for All. Despite this, it's still there.... While I doubt either of them were really the first to use a 5 string bass in a metal band, Jason Newstead was definitely playing them before Dave Ellefson.
David Ellefson is one of the reasons I started playing bass back in the day. Him and Cliff Burton were my heroes. My favorite bass I own is a Spector Euro 5 string with his signature EMG pickups in it.
Jason Newsted used a 5 string Wal on '... and Justice For All' back in 1988 (it's seen in the One video), he also used a 10 string bass during the recording of the black album.
Unfortunately, the bass tracks on AJFA were eighty sixed.
@Inabón Díaz If you would pay f***ing attention, people are trying to a 5 string bass was used on the recording of AJFA which was released before Rust In Peace. I brought up that AJFA does not count since the bass tracks were omitted from the recording. So, before you call someone out for being "stupid," you need to have your crap together.
He said Jackson first ever 5 string bass. The title may be wrong but Dave didn't say the first 5 string bass ever.
@@crazeyjoe "Omitted"? Jason still used a 5-string bass on Justice, and the Garage Days Re-Revisited EP. Dave can say whatever he wants, but he is still incorrect.
Back for the Attack 11/2/87
Wow.. I thought octavers just sounded wierd. That 10 string sounds just like a pedal..
Or, octave pedals sound just like 8, 10, and 12-string basses.
bro that 70s P bass is beyond gorgeous!! Ellefson has been one of my biggest inspirations since i started using pick with bass along with Jason Newsted and Rex Brown, hopefully we can see them on the show too!!
Dave is the cool Uncle everyone wishes they had. Gene Simmons put a bass in my hand, David Ellefson kept it there. Awesome content!
I’m a guitarist not a bass player, but I could sit and listen to Dave all day.
Dave is one of my favorite bass players. Thanks for doing this!
Love Dave! Thanks for this video. I think Jens Becker from Running Wild used a 5 string first on the track Highland Glory of the Death or Glory album in 89.
Very good. Very cool. I've heard so much about him, but have never heard him speak. This was very eye opening for me to see his talent without all of the guitars drowning him out. I loved it, thank you.
I was in an almost successful metal band (opened for Metallica, Megadeth, Spinal Tap...) in the SF Bay Area in '84. Our bass player played a 5 string. He was monsterous. Used an SVT for a preamp, had a tone like the klaxon at the swimming pool. He would break a string on his bass every night.
Great interview with Dave thanks
David wearing an Artillery shirt is one of the coolest things I've seen in a while
Actually in 1987 Monsters of Rock, Jason Newted from Metallica played a 5 string HORIZON bass from ESP, (Which Bass Channel)
From what I know, the first five string bass played in a metal album was in Port Royal, album from the band Running Wild. But it obviously isn't as big as Megadeth, so the the biggest influence in that matter is surely David Ellefson! Cheers from Brazil!
Edit: you can check it in he video for the track Conquistadores, recorded in 1988
Never knew this had a 5 string bass! I love Running Wild, one of the greatest heavy metal bands for sure!
White Yamaha 5 string. I remember his thumb permanently anchored over the top of the neck.
David is one of the nicest guys in the metal world! Awesome video, Scott. Thanks for that.
Dave Ellefson : One the most tight, original, and humble Bassist in Metal History. Strong personality, unique and recognizable sound from the first note. If you have any doubts, check out the isolated bass tracks from the (classic) album "Rust in Peace" on RUclips ! ("Holy wars", "Five Magics" just to name a few). ROCK ON Dave ! (and Thanks Scott for this video !)
That 10 string is the coolest thing I've ever seen
I believe Jason Newsted was using a 5-string live and in recording before Youthanasia.
You are correct, sir.
Great Vid. Thank you for expanding your musical horizon this year.
David Ellefson is one hell of a bassist. So glad that he is a part of SBL academy.
Let's get a video on Al Cisneros!! One of the few people to ever get a signature Rickenbacker. Absolutely massive bass player
I like that he kept that P-bass totally original. He even left on the thumb rest even though he uses a pick.
Such a nice guy David! and what a player! also a LEGEND
Man, he truly relishes explaining that 10 string
Makes me even more proud to own a Modulus Quantum 5 :)
Dude this is so awesome! Been watching your videos for a good bit and Megadeth has been one of my favorites since I was a lad.
This is one of the guys, I would say top 2 or 3 that the number one spot bounces back and forth between that inspired me to play bass. Very grateful for this I got 2 more payments on my Fender Vintage 1970 Jazz Bass to make , then I am signing up. What a great way to start my Saturday off with this video.
I was fortunate enough to meet Dave and buy his Jackson 5 string black bass which he played at the show and signed . Totally cool dude, we are OG’s so got to chat a lot about the old days. That Jackson 5 string is a beast
I love this series and Junior has got be one of the coolest dudes in metal. Seeing him and Dave is a bucket list show for me.
My eternal respect and admiration my brother...I remember the 88 tour w/ Dio; thanks for the great memories
Jason Newstead toured on the "Damaged Justice" tour in 1988 with a Wal 5-String. He recorded the album however with a Steinberger 4-String according to an old tab book I have (printed in 1989), though a sound engineer claimed he used the Wal 5.
he also had an alembic 5 string. You can see it on the seattle 89 concert
So cool you got David to be part of your courses. Well done
Love the Countdown To Extinction frame record on the wall, such a classic album cover, the one that got me into Megadeth actually. I miss the days of bands having such iconic artwork, I remember I used to watch that CTE picture in my room so much while listening to the record that I felt like I was transported inside the image or something like that, it was a weird but awesome feeling. It's been long since I saw a record with an album cover that struck me hard, if my memory serves me well, I think that last "straight to the hall of fame of album covers" was Mastodon's Leviathan. Love Dave, he definitely has done quite a lot for bass players in metal.
David says “ it’s little harder to shred 10 string bass” continues to shred that shit like cheese! What a guy
Jimmy Bain was playing a 5 string bass with Rainbow back in the 70s.
Great video, interesting to hear that Ellefeson seemed to be following Newsted's lead on experimenting with a few different bass brands, spectors in 92 and then Sadowsky in 99 🤔
And you hear him live. Dude is gonna be heard on the bottom end! Love Dave. Love how down to earth he is. Both he & Brian Johnson very easy to like. Seen Megadeth 7 times, Last show Dystopia tour 16’

Happy bassday! I still remember the day I switched, nearly 30 years ago now. Completely changed the way I hear and think about music. Wrathchild America's Climbin' the Walls precedes Rust in Peace by a year, 1989. Brad Divens was using 5 string basses for Metal back then.
I met Dave Ellefson when he did a bass clinic at The Bass Place (when it was in Scottsdale, AZ probably in 1996). He and I both play Modulus Quantum series bass guitars, he a QSPi5 and me a QSPi6.
