Me too. There's nothing else quite like the sound of non-turbocharged EMDs. This video presents the sounds of my childhood. I love the Nathan M5 on the Green Mountain Geep.
I recognize this spot, at 10:46, being in Miller's Falls (a village, part of Montague, MA). Just look at the difference in condition between the two railroad's tracks and roadbeds! Noticeable? At 11:41, the CV's rails/grade starts to rise as they will (further south) cross over the B&M's (Guilford's) tracks, over a plate girder bridge, with a steel plated floor (a "minimum thickness" bridge floor, keeping it as thin as possible, for clearance/grade rise issues), right nearby the Route 63 overpass, continue on going south, to Amherst, MA. The B&M's tracks go south, nearby Lake Pleasant, then, turn westward, going to the East Deerfield Yard. At 18:59, that is the village of Three Rivers, MA. This is just a few miles north of the Palmer, MA interchange, with the (now) CSX Railroad.
I live in Michigan, the Grand Trunk railroad had a yard in Port Huron, Durand, Detroit, Battle Creek, Flint . I was lucky enough to have an uncle who was the train master at Port Huron, I took many over the road ride ride alongs in these Geeps. When C.N. fully took over I was able to attend engineer/ conductor training in 1990, worked for a year and had to quit due to marital stress from the job.
April 2023 for this comment. In the early 1950's I lived on Salisbury street in Randolph Vt; the street ran parallel to the CV line so the house was 150 feet from the tracks. This was in my preteen years. At that time the Geeps were just being put into service, so there was still steam power being used along with brand new GP units. There was two local switching trains each day, at least 4 through freights, and I believe a total of 4 passenger trains. One thru freight went thru at midnight, you could hear that thing coming for several minutes before blasting thru town, shaking the whole house. I can remember seeing Budd self powered passenger units replacing the passenger trains. This reminds me how @#$#@*&^ old I'm getting.
Love this video! I enjoy all things New England railroading. Living in IL we don't get out there anymore but were regular visitors many years ago when I could still drive that far. Thank you...!
For 47 years or so, my family has gone to WRJ and the Green Mountain RR runs along the campground at Route 5. When it comes through, It actually shakes the campground. We can hear the whistle at the intersection of Route 4 & 5 in Hartford VT. I love watching trains so this is really cool. Thanks for posting these cool videos.
Whenever I start feeling nostalgic for the old CV I have to watch this video again and touch base with the coolest railroad ever and feel good all over again .
***** Hi Steve, Good to hear from you! My attention to youtube has been pretty sporadic lately....scanning slides has been taking most of my time, I did set the VHS capture system back up this weekend and did a couple of Moose tapes.
Yes, but now, it had later become the St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad. It did also pass through the town of Groveton, NH (nearby the former paper mill), heading SE on to Portland, ME.
Yes it did, it ran west out of Portland,ME thru northern NH and VT to Canada, the line is now the St.Lawrence and Atlantic, a Genesse and Wyoming property, Craig
Not too much pre-Guilford, but i've got one coming soon with two harvest gold U18B's (and five other Goofy...I mean Guilford units) on a westbound, Craig
+Khadijah Brown a Geep refers to an EMD GP unit which stands for general purpose. Not a whole lot of them on the mainlines these days, especially not ones these old but there are tons of older ones still in revenue service on shortlines.

I'm sure everyone is crying tears of nostalgia as they watch these videos I know I'm getting close to. Nice catches and lash-ups
Even eight years later.

Great video, my old stomping grounds! Love the clip through Miller’s Falls, only thing that could have been better is if a B&M eastbound came along.

Brings back so many great memories of chasing those beautiful Geeps!

Didnt the GT at one time run across Northern Vermont and Maine?

Cool bells on the Green Mountain motors! Are they manual like the steamers or air?
