The director, Raja Gosnell, wanted a real-life couple to play Daphne and Fred. His first choice was Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. Prinze Jr. didn't originally want to do the movie because he felt it wouldn't live up to the Scooby cartoons, but Gellar talked him into it. This was the last Scooby-Doo project franchise to be created and produced by both William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Hanna died on March 22, 2001. After filming was completed, Freddie Prinze Jr. had to shave his head, because the bleach ruined his hair. Sarah Michelle Gellar hated wearing Daphne's purple go-go boots and would change into comfy sneakers whenever she was able. Freddie Prinze Jr. hated wearing the trademark ascot Fred usually wore in the original cartoons. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jennifer Aniston were considered for the role of Daphne. One of the few Scooby-Doo films to reveal the real first names of Scooby and Shaggy as, respectively, Scoobert and Norville. Frank Welker, who has voiced Freddy Jones in all the Scooby-Doo cartoons, provides his voice to one of the evil creatures in this movie. From 2002 Welker has also taken on the job of voicing Scooby-Doo. Despite the movie poster of the gang being in front of the shadow of the Luna Ghost the villain only appears in the first few minutes of the film. This is because the Luna Ghost was originally intended to be the main antagonist in an early draft of the script. In reality, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar are married, having had two children together. Ironically, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who is blonde, portrayed the red-haired Daphne, while Isla Fisher, who is redheaded, portrayed the blonde Mary Jane. Linda Cardellini and Isla Fisher were fans of the cartoon before they were cast in the film. The very last Hanna-Barbera live-action movie. Originally, Scrappy Doo was not going to be the main villain. At the end of the film, Old Man Smithers aka "the Luna Ghost" from the beginning of the movie was going to be behind the event of the film. Throughout the film, there are hints that Mr. Mondavarious is actually Scrappy. He is seen scratching behind his ear as if he had fleas. His office also has bookends in the shape of dog heads and a carved dog head statue. Though James Gunn hasn't entirely disowned the film, he has expressed regret in making Scrappy the main villain of the film, after receiving some backlash from the character's fans. James Gunn's original screenplay had the villain finally revealed as actor Don Knotts, a payoff to Fred's line referring to Scooby's mistake at his Christmas party. The kitchen in the Spooky Island Castle where Shaggy and Scooby have their burp/fart competition is the same kitchen in which the brainwashing training video was filmed. This explains why there is a camera in the kitchen and Shaggy says "lights, camera, action. Huh Scoob" when he notices it.
Scooby Doo IS for kids... Kids from the 60's, 70's, and 80's... all of whom just happen to have advanced in age well beyond that of a "kid". I was born in 1981, and I still proudly love Scooby-Doo. 40 year old men (or 20, or 30... whatever your current age) can still be child like in some ways... with nothing to be ashamed of!
Mary Jane also served as a way to draw attention away from the question of whether or not Shaggy actually hooked up with any of the girls. which if the old shows where 100% in continuity he he at least hooked up with Daphne to the point of a common-law marriage and basically starting a family by unofficially adopting flim-flam. In those spin offs they lived in the same house but censored (separate rooms) as to not draw any intimacy connections Beyond everything else pointing to them to being an item besides a marriage certificate and wedding rings. Which goes against two narratives 1.) the whole pandering to the possibility of the gang secretly just being two gay couples. which is where the hole Velma Daphne fan comes from. 2.) it destroys the newer pandering continuity of Fred and Daphne being a couple but being too stupid and chicken to initiate it. Because they went with the cliche jock and would-be cheerleader and nerdy feminist with hippie slacker. Essentially the pairing of societal Alphas with their Polar Opposites in the literally and metaphorical sense.

I've usually found the whole, brainwashed/possession plot to be very creepy. Also, I agree on the scene with Velma in a bikini. That, Daphnes Spirit Thingy, the alternate intro should've been in there.
I'm a huge Scooby fan. The first live action movie could've been better with some more adult humor slipped in. This movie (for better or worse) inspired a lot of my fashion choices at the time. :p
Perhaps the reason Monsters in 2002 Scooby Doo movie can't survive in the sunlight are: Sunlights has Positive energy while those monsters are made from Negative Energy(this fact is what's Ghostbusters of Super Sentai aka Gogo-v brought up)
The only thing that’s ever bugged me about this movie is that all the posters and dvd covers have the shadow of the old man Smithers ghost on them. That always bugged me as a kid because they literally brought him down in the first 9 freaking minutes. Aside from that, this movie is amazing.
+Marion Ette True confession: I have a crush on Shaggy. Then again, I have always had a thing for lovable goofballs, and also for Matthew Lillard. Don't judge me, please.
I laugh a lot with the Daria joke. I do think a darker and edgier version of Scooby Doo as a movie could have been better, maybe with a real dog (obviously inhence with some CGI for some parts) althoug probably with current state of CGI won't be necesarry anymore (like the racoon in GOTG or the apes in PoA that look very realistic) but still, real to CGI is always better. But is curiously how Zombie Island is really one of the best direct-to-video animated films and is much better than this film. That's why I think a movie with that tone might work. And if the writer also write GOTG so he knows how to make the balance between the two styles. Anyway...

Aw, the Scooby-Doo cartoons, good old times. I've seen almost all of the shows when they were being aired on Cartoon Network, including the one with Shaggy as a wolf in a race. I even remember them parodying 'The Blair Witch Project' once. Who else remembers *that* being on TV?
Hilarious review! This is a guilty pleasure of ours as well. Our son is a huge Scooby fan and he loved this video. Also, we gotta agree that this movie would have worked better as the sequel to Monsters Unleashed. And yes, Flim Flam is an abomination! Also, we gotta know, what is your favorite Scooby Doo series?
As for how something can evolve and still die in sunlight, in real life scorpions avoid sunlight because it kills them after prolonged exposure. So it does make sense.
I get that Scrappy was hated, but making him be the villain? That's beyond insane! Where & when did he manage to get a cult of dog-rabbit demons? Why does he want to take over the human race with them while the humans souls are forever trapped in a pool? If this was all to get revenge on Mystery Inc., why did he have to make others suffer along with them? I thought Scrappy idolized his uncle Scooby, and the gang wouldn't just leave him out in the middle of nowhere (they would just drop him off to his mother or any other Scooby relative to watch over him).
I feel that Scarappy pulled a Syndrome ( from the Incredibles) in that their plan was filled with selfish intent and from a misunderstanding that blew out of proportion. Then again they just drop him off in theirdke of nowhere, I would be pissed too.
Great review as always Wolfula. Hopefully the copyright police won't give you too much trouble. Do they even understand what "Fair Use" is, or do they get paid by the click for reporting stuff?
Tommy Carr actually, they make a direct-to-television prequel and the prequel was succesful (in context) and so they make a sequel of the prequel (with the same cast and still chronologically before the first movie) so...
It's funny you mention Speed Buggy cause if I'm not wrong, there was a crossover episode with Scooby Doo back in the 80's or 90's (If I remember right, it's due time I looked at my old video tapes)
As a continuation of bad live action incarnations of an animated medium, you should review Guyver (1991). Or if you feel like torturing him beyond compare, have Goulash review it.

15:15 The gang was frequently referred to as Mystery Inc. in "A Pup Named Scooby-Doo." :)
I'm a huge Scooby fan. The first live action movie could've been better with some more adult humor slipped in.
This movie (for better or worse) inspired a lot of my fashion choices at the time. :p
Perhaps the reason Monsters in 2002 Scooby Doo movie can't survive in the sunlight are: Sunlights has Positive energy while those monsters are made from Negative Energy(this fact is what's Ghostbusters of Super Sentai aka Gogo-v brought up)
Like a nutron
Vincent Price looked like he could have played Doctor Strange. What a shame he wasn't alive in 2016.
18:34 One guy called the creatures the "Big Muchachas", but then again, he was a Mexican wrestler so he was just calling the monsters big girls
The only thing that’s ever bugged me about this movie is that all the posters and dvd covers have the shadow of the old man Smithers ghost on them. That always bugged me as a kid because they literally brought him down in the first 9 freaking minutes. Aside from that, this movie is amazing.
There is a great poster with Spooky Island mothiffs behind the gang. It's pink, and I take it as the official one...
Did I hear the tone correctly? Sounds like someone else has a crush on Velma...
+Marion Ette True confession: I have a crush on Shaggy. Then again, I have always had a thing for lovable goofballs, and also for Matthew Lillard. Don't judge me, please.
+Maggie Koch Can't imagine why I would. I've always had a bit of a crush on both Shaggy and Velma, as well...

That new new intro was nothing short of brilliance.
I love this film but making Scrappy Doo the villain is the one thing I don't like
I guess they made Scrappy-Doo villain just to erase him from the history books.
I've watched this review countless times, I love it. Your the man Doc
Cartelini's velma is hot actually.
Anyway...
Anyone remember the "Scooby, Scrappy, and Yabba-Doo" show? Or was it just my teenage fever dream?
Every time my parents took me to Blockbuster, I would get this movie. I watched this movie every weekend until Blockbuster wen't under. I'm 23 now and haven't seen it since Blockbuster stopped being a thing. Gods this feels so weird.
DVD copies are easy to obtain. Though get the Widescreen version.
I loved this movie as a kid! I'm 18 now😂 All the actors fit their roles pretty well! Especially SMG. I watched this before I ever watched Buffy so the fight scene at the end weirded me out a little but I've been a Buffy fan for two years now so... Lol. Great review!
I love this film and its sequel, I know they’re not perfect but my favorite of those films is Monsters Unleashed.
They’re guilty pleasures of mine right next to Inspector Gadget 1 and 2. ❤️
Interesting.
I'm from Australia.. we dont ride in the pouches of Kangaroo Jacks to school and say "mate" in every sentence like some people believe, just had to throw that out there. but heck i didnt even know we had a Movie World, so going now XD Dr. Wolfula your reviews are getting gooooood and i was charmed to sit through the whole thing :)
unpopular opinion: second film was better.
Shocker: not so unpopular most people agree with you
Aw, the Scooby-Doo cartoons, good old times.
The adult version of this is the film we all deserve
Then again they just drop him off in theirdke of nowhere, I would be pissed too.
if you look at shaggy he is one of the killers in scream1 if you look closely i forgot his name but the guy who got killed with the TV
that ghost thing at the start of the movie was one of the scariest things in my childhood
One of your best reviews to date. Cheers
, doc/sid :)
Great review as always Wolfula. Hopefully the copyright police won't give you too much trouble. Do they even understand what "Fair Use" is, or do they get paid by the click for reporting stuff?
PuppetDungeon It's all automated, unfortunately.
Red shirt shaggy movies have a special nostalgic place in my heart
Are you gonna review Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed?
Brandon Network im from the future and yes he just did
Wolfula please review the other 3 live action Scooby Doo movies
PrimusVsUnicron 3? I know there's the sequel, then there's the prequel, what's the other one?
The sequel to the prequel
Woah woah woah......they made more after 2? We're the first two that popular?
Tommy Carr actually, they make a direct-to-television prequel and the prequel was succesful (in context) and so they make a sequel of the prequel (with the same cast and still chronologically before the first movie) so...
Tommy Carr it was on Cartoon Network
How do you feel about the ''Scooby-Doo'' knock offs of the 60's such as ''Jabberjaw'' or ''Speed Buggy''.
It's funny you mention Speed Buggy cause if I'm not wrong, there was a crossover episode with Scooby Doo back in the 80's or 90's (If I remember right, it's due time I looked at my old video tapes)
if any of you are curious what his outro music was it Marylin set me free by Casino versus Japan.
I now want to see Daphne get a deep voice and challenge people to a card game for the fate of the world. TIME TO DUEL!!
I actually liked the Animated films of the 80’s and later on.
Dude, that fart-off in this movie was pretty lame, but the pay off, when he notices Daphne was totally worth. Still cracked me up.
Rowan Atkinson was FANTASTIC in this film.
You forgot to mention Leatherface is in this movie bro
omg when you mentioned Scooby doo on Zombie island i said to myself im definitely watching that later lol
Wow. A lot changes in five years... keep up the awesome work!
A pup named scooby doo, damn, how could i have forgotten!?!?!
As a continuation of bad live action incarnations of an animated medium, you should review Guyver (1991). Or if you feel like torturing him beyond compare, have Goulash review it.
Hey Doctor Wolfula where you been? Scooby Doo is my childhood I would stay up and watch it every night at 7:30 after The Flintstones on Cartoon Network.
Now I want to watch Scooby doo on zombie island
Gotta love Cereal Killer as Shaggy. Hack the Planet!
Going back through your catalog. REALLY glad you dropped the voice.
22:05 I wouldn't have been jealous if I ever saw Velma & Daphne kissing each other. I would simply go up to my screen & ask if I could join them
During the opening of the video is the music an edited version of darth nihilus theme from Star wars
Great Review once again Wolfula!
Hope you review the sequel! I didn't like the sequel too much.
12:34 I wasn't as clever to come up with a witty name for it, but that is pretty much what I thought.
i genuinely enjoyed this first time i watched it was great to see charachters i grew up on and the island being awesome always helps
I've been on that scooby doo ride you said about. i waited 2 and a half hours in line. the ride was fun and i loved it but i got out just to see that the line had shortened down to 5 minutes. at least i got a cool mid roller coaster photo out of it.
the photo is somewhere. its been ages.
Tom hardy was great as bane
What is the orchestra music right at the beginning? It sounds cool.
Awesome as always Doc.
Got a Q&A for yea....(More like I got the "Q", you gotta supply the answer........did I think that last part, or type it? No I typed it....Yes I celebrated 420....)
Happy 420.....(started the review before midnight.)
ANYWAYS....
When is the next Dr. Wolfula Q&A video? Those were the shit :)
supermarky123 Planning to have another Q&A soon.
Would you do a retrospective of Scooby-Doo, like what you did with Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers?
wstine79 I'm thinking about starting a new video series on the side where I talk about random Scooby-Doo movies, games and episodes. I just need to get some stuff out of the way, first.
MLP fans walked -with ponies- so Dr. Wolfula could run -with Scooby.-
Movie world is awesome, the superman ride is crazy.
