Seeing this video of yours and hearing why the owner made this place a thing made it much more amazing. I do hope it last for a long time and they get more machines as time passes. I don't know about Japan, but in Thailand, the convenience stores start to introduce vending machines under their brand to disseminate the vending points.
Aw, that's a little sad. The old vending machine makers have gone under - many of them. Demand was too low. The main focus of public interest in this topic seems to be the curiosity of the large number of retro vending machines, but the most significant feature is that the owner, Mr. Saito, does his best to make sure that visitors to his used tire shop enjoy their time waiting for their tires to be changed, and that those who come from all over the country to use the vending machines also enjoy their time there. This is why he has been reported in the Japanese media. He spends a lot of time and effort repairing old vending machines, they have even replaced the lights with LEDs to conserve electricity, making various efforts to save money so that customers can purchase products at low prices, preparing large quantities of food so that they can enjoy the delicious food, and maintaining the vending machines while dealing with the pranks of the mindless. It's great to serve others, even at the cost of one's own self. And John and his crew did a great job 👍

Great topic! A frequent Japan visitor over 40 years I couldn’t figure out why these machines were disappearing. Now I know, it’s the the rise of convenience stores! My first vending machine purchase years ago, based entirely on product name: Polcari Sweat.
John, I cannot tell you this enough times: this show is so good and upsettingly wholesome. Coca-Cola in a glass bottle is God tier. I share the sentiments with Saito-san that restoring old things and bringing them back to life is a holy act. I could sense the Kami emanating from the machines just looking at them on this video.
It's almost incomprehensible how much work it must require to keep all of the different foods stocked, and fresh in so many machines! Not to mention keeping all these arcane mechanisms working. I truly hope he sees enough business to sell through most of his food and keep the site alive for years to come. This is really a marvel I'll need to see for myself if I ever make it back to Japan
Wow! Its incredible that his hobby of collecting machines has expanded to something of that scale. It must take a lot of work to maintain all year round. Interesting to see the story behind a place like this.
What a great place! Thank you to Saito-San for preserving history. Thank you for sharing this wonderful place & Hope this continues with future generations. 💞💞💞
This was great, this is the first time I've ever seen a real behind-the-scenes of how these work. I loved all of it. I kinda understand how he feels about vending machines cause I'm obsessed with pinball. I love the mechanical sounds and moving parts. Nothing quite like it.
Aww. This was so awesome. The curry looked delicious with the rice. 😋 The inner workings of these vending machines are genius. 🤯I love that Saito San is nurturing his hobby. You can tell that it is a labor of love. ❤ I can see that this passion of Saito San may eventually be his full-time job. The tires will pave the way, right? Thanks for sharing this, John! Certainly a sense of nostalgia for many.
The thing that astonished me is that many of the food machines requiring fresh deliveries still have companies around servicing owners of their machines with refills, we wouldn't have that in other places. That and the curry rice machine that's the last one of its kind in operation is something that should be of note for visitors visiting there.
I asked about that. There’s a company in Ebina (Kanagawa, same prefecture) that provides him with it but it’s a special order, business relationship just to keep the machines going. It’s not just Saito-san. His passion fuels it though. There are a lot of players who don’t want to see them die out and THAT is a good story.
Love this episode John. I love a good passion project, for you and for the owner of the vending machine park. I love to see this park expand and keep running. It will not doubt be a good place to hangout for everyone, who wants to try stuff they have never heard of, and those who want to just be taken back to the old days.
New sub here, I wish I could go to Japan I love the culture and all of the food. Sadly my health will not allow it. As I can't fly anymore. Really enjoyed the video. I was the 181 like on the video.
It's always fun watching someone who's passionate about something talk about the the things they love; Saito-san clearly really cares about the place in history these machines have. Great video, can't wait to go back!
Thank you for another amazing video. This was one of the coolest places so far! Saito-san is an absolute hero for building and maintaining this open air museum.
They're almost all gone - sad. They can't get the parts, too costly to maintain and the food also has changed. Companies don't make it anymore, has to be done yourself. But it'll never go away as long as Saito-san and others with that dedication remain with an eye on the past nostalgia, which we love to live in as well. Thanks UFO Bob for watching!
Man, this place is really having itself _A MOMENT_ on RUclips lately. Deservedly so. 16:27 "I don't know how to put it into words, it's just more than my hobby." Everything in the world is transient, but some things deserve to stick around a while longer than others. This helps him stay in touch with society, with community, with history; it is the intersection of Wa and Iki, and he gets to be the showman, the shepherd, the tinkerer, and the teacher, to generations young and old. _Natsukashii, ne._ He's just a good man, making the world a better place. But then, so are you, John! Thank you for making the best video about this vending machine park I've seen yet. ^‿^ Now to go watch part two...
Japan is so unique from other parts of the world where one can simply have a whole day’s worth of meal just being around these vending machines 😋😋😋😋👍👍👍👍👍
THAT is AMAZING. I absolutely love that these aren't just sitting in a museum in a non-functional state but still preserved in a way they were meant to be used in their original release. It is so awesome to see machines with technology that pre-date microchips. This is the type of project that deserves extra funding from government or some charitable organization for preserving a piece of history. Respect to the owner for this accomplishment. Thanks for the fun video!!! 😁
This curry rice vending machine is totally amazing! The way it opens the bag blew my mind. So simple yet so effective :3 Actually I think that because those machines are on the 'analog' side of technology, it's even remotely possible to keep them alive. If it would be all about electronics, then it wouldn't be so "easy" to maintain. I dare to say it would be impossible for someone not affiliated with big companies.
So nostalgic. I remember watching the old vending machine video, and watching something similar, after all these years.. It just hits deep.. Thank you John, thank you for all these years!
U should have done this one with ericsurf6. Seriously this is cool seeing japan using these old not obsolete machines. There is just something cool bout this retro machines and the variety they...WOW
He's been here more than the owner! hahaha Eric is the original Vending Machine hunter and I am sure to catch up with him again real soon. Brother from another mother.
Standing in front of a food vending machine in Japan, you often wonder if the food is frozen or dried. It's somewhat re-assuring to see the food is fresh in some of these vendos! It explains why the dishes are often so oishii. PS does Scotty ever get mistaken for Craig McLachlan? (It's an Aussie/English thing)
Rental Car is best. You can take a train then bus - it’s not so easy. But it shouldn’t be or everyone would be here and it’s be packed! Have to work for it. I’ll see about the transport and add it to the video description. Good call thinking of that.
@@onlyinjapan thank you - im bringing my 10 year old son and we've wanted to see this since dancing bacons did their video too. would be awesome to know how to get there and back if we cant drive
Silly questions but how much energy would these machines use each month total and what's with the white things hanging off the ceiling (I suspected they are just chopstick noodle packets)?
I was wondering the same thing as well? I ended up searching the comments and found an answer!: "...they're fortune-telling slips of paper (Omikuji) from a vending machine there that dispenses them. You can see these same sorts of fortunes tied at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. Only the bad luck fortunes are tied to something where it is hoped the bad luck will remain there and not follow the bearer. While good luck fortunes are kept."
It would have been interesting to hear what machine was Saito-san's favorite and what machine he'd like to have but hasn't been able to find. Great video!
I think it’s the curry rice. I got that feeling. But they’re all special. He put in work in all of them. It’s like asking me my favorite video on the channel 🧐
S/o to John Daub for getting the owner’s permission to film the machines at work! This episode of Only In Japan is awesome! Always wanted to see the insides of these after seeing a few videos on RUclips.
If I had one more day I’d have shown a few more. Saito-san is quite busy and I’m so thankful for his time and generosity. The Popcorn 🍿 vending machine is in Scotty’s channel 😉 I let him have that exclusive. It’s pretty amazing!
Wow this is maybe a top 3 favorite video on this channel ❤ So interesting to see how these machines work inside😮 When you said this was before microwaves my brain exploded a bit lol🤯 I was born in 1991 so that's still before my brain can think about lol so cool though, I think the udon machine was super cool inside and the coffee and that bag opening situation 🤩🤩🤩🤩 So cool what an interesting topic the owner has a great story and the food looks pretty decent you would never find anything this good in a machine in America lol not even in office buildings or hospitals where people are stuck a long time definitely not at a car shop😭 Thank you for this knowledge that I didnt know I needed❤ I have literally never considered how the udon style machines worked but I'm glad I know now, you may have just sent me down a, "how it works old school Japanese vending machines work" rabbit hole🤯🤯🤯🤯🖤 Would love a series of different machines all over Japan...
Just amazing ,and Saitosan is a genius and national treasure. I'd seriously want to go there and spend a few days eating from these machines all day long. Thanks John for showing...
i’ve never even been to japan and i can feel the nostalgia. it is probably the design, the vibes, or the cutlery i don’t know. today apple launch a freakin vr device and yet somewhere in japan there’s a man taking care of machine dated back from where microwave haven’t even exist. great video mr. daub 👍
I love the way you saw this, so true. I think one of the great thing about Japan’s too heavy demographics is the way the country can both accelerate the gas on progress and also spam the breaks and look back too. The concept of MOTTAINAI is strong and one of my favorites. Don’t be wasteful. If it still works, it can still be useful. Don’t take more than you need. These machines still work well and serve its purpose and we remember that with places like this. (I’m not getting that VR headset 😂 … yet)
@@onlyinjapan Don't worry it reportedly won't be available for purchase until early next year. (I think the lag time is to give all the Apple adicts time to save up $3,500. :)
what a great episode! very interesting to learn a little bit about the history of the machines and the japanese vending machine culture. too bad they're not as common anymore but i'm happy to see that this guy has a passion for them and wants to preserve and keep this cool part of japanse culture alive :)
I can’t believe i just discovered your page today. I used to watch you on the old series then you left and I pretty much stopped watching it with different hosts. Was disappointed you had left and didn’t know why. Anyways, great to see that you’re still making content and I have a bunch of vids to catch up on now.
Welcome back! It takes a while to build a new channel. I got knocked down, but got up again 😂 🎶 anyway, it’s part of life. Just start again - the stories are out there! Enjoy the catching up! I started off again with another naked man festival in a freezing cold 🥶
I still remember that one of your first videos (I think the 2nd one) on the old channel is vending machines and this collab with Scotty is the next level for it, kind of like how Japanology Plus is a more advanced Begin Japanology.
Im bit surprised on the Udon machine part... Lil bit disappointed it was already assembled in the bowl but still interesting nevertheless... Also with that old 70's-80's i just wonder how much it electricity cost just to keep it up 😳
I am sure it is an electricity hog but they did do a good job insulating, you can see him LOCK it up air tight. All food in vending machines have been pre-prepared. Even the bananas 🍌 😂 they needed to be wrapped special.
This is something as someone who has an interest ( and a job ) in electronics repair on one side and now game dev ( tech artistry ) on the other, learning how things operate and then using that information to repair other of the same thing is really interesting to learn about. You almost become a surgeon in a way, especially with larger machines like the ones at this lot, that require such care and attention to both what you know and how you do it, that you really do need that passion for it. Plus it helps while your working on ones that you can step to the left of you for a meal in-between, especially if your spending quite a few hours repairing one.
Gotta have respect hats off to saito san!!! Loved the curry easily slide out of that shiney packet to get every drop out!!!! Great vid from the insides!!!! 👊🏻 P.s Scotty I could eat it John you are eating it!!!! 🤣👍🏻
The important thing is that these are maintained daily. Meanwhile, we don’t get new sandwiches in our vending machine until the old ones turn green or until the thing is pretty much empty.

Wow! Its incredible that his hobby of collecting machines has expanded to something of that scale. It must take a lot of work to maintain all year round. Interesting to see the story behind a place like this.
Lol, the irony of that Kodak machine selling Fujifilm rolls...
I've seen this place on lots of videos and it's amazing to see every single time. I really really want to visit Japan it looks amazing
Thank you for another amazing video. This was one of the coolest places so far!
Saito-san is an absolute hero for building and maintaining this open air museum.
Sneaking into an unlisted video from Scottie's link!
Welcome aboard 🎌
Those classic vending machine are so cool. I remember seeing many of those when I visited Japan 🇯🇵 in the mid-90s.
I hope Scotty doesn't pick his women the same way he picks his meals....
Man, this place is really having itself _A MOMENT_ on RUclips lately. Deservedly so.
16:27 "I don't know how to put it into words, it's just more than my hobby."
Everything in the world is transient, but some things deserve to stick around a while longer than others. This helps him stay in touch with society, with community, with history; it is the intersection of Wa and Iki, and he gets to be the showman, the shepherd, the tinkerer, and the teacher, to generations young and old. _Natsukashii, ne._
He's just a good man, making the world a better place. But then, so are you, John! Thank you for making the best video about this vending machine park I've seen yet. ^‿^ Now to go watch part two...
I think so too but no one had ever just asked him why. I’m glad I did, it was worth it! Good story behind this very amazing place!
hello
The only thing that isn't sold in a Japanese vending machine is a vending machine and I might even be wrong about that. 😂
Got here from Strange Parts, I highly recommend to make the video public! Its still set to unlisted 😉
That's because it's an early access for RUclips and Patreon members
I understand why, but it's was open regardless 😉
Another great vending machine video!!! I love how the owner still manages to stock his old machines with the original products. Thanks again John 👌👊
This is so cool, love that they keep all the old tech alive. The machine with the Nixie tubes is insane. Hope it stays profitable forever.
So simple yet so effective :3
Actually I think that because those machines are on the 'analog' side of technology, it's even remotely possible to keep them alive.
It's fascinating to see how some of those machines work, and I love his passion.
Not only is that man nice, and has a vending machine park, but has old school bbs wheels that I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR, FOR 5 YEARS
Wow! This is really great. The ingredients are of a decent quality considering it came from a vending machine. Nice video! 😊
@@onlyinjapan I really enjoy how u mix entertainment with info, helping us learn more bout Japan. Keep up the great work
The proprieter, Sato san is a visionary, for sure. How often does one sit in an automotive shop, dying of boredom? Great work, John & Scotty -!!
Thanks for interviewing the owner and getting his perspective, that was super cool.
13:10 More nixies! I bet there's all sorts of weird displays in these machines, panaplex, numitron, plasma matrix, early VFDs, exc.
So freaking amazing!! This is definitely on my bucket list of places to visit in Japan!!
Thank you for taking us behind the scenes!!
Looks delicious.
No vending machine museum is complete without a classic Japanese panty dispensing machine!
I'm glad you added that zoom in after "It's a perfect dump" 😂
John this is awesome - im heading to tokyo in september! how would i go about getting there? unless you want to take a couple new zealanders there? :P
Wish this was available when I visited Sagamihara. Alas, it was in 1989 (sigh)
So glad to stumble across this while I watch reborn as a vending machine kek
@@macavitymacavity Thank you kind sir!
@@onlyinjapan All the machines were great but I would say the curry rice was probably my favorite too.
That was fantastic, so much retro machines, one can get nostalgic by less, its a living museum. Thanks for the video John 😃
The soup vending machine is actually really cool , I wish they would show the insides.
Awesome 🎊 🎉😂! Thank you👍👏🙏.
Excellent video thanks for sharing.
Great video, thanks looking forward to see them face to face😊
Wow this is maybe a top 3 favorite video on this channel ❤
So interesting to see how these machines work inside😮
When you said this was before microwaves my brain exploded a bit lol🤯
I was born in 1991 so that's still before my brain can think about lol so cool though, I think the udon machine was super cool inside and the coffee and that bag opening situation 🤩🤩🤩🤩
So cool what an interesting topic the owner has a great story and the food looks pretty decent you would never find anything this good in a machine in America lol not even in office buildings or hospitals where people are stuck a long time definitely not at a car shop😭
Thank you for this knowledge that I didnt know I needed❤
I have literally never considered how the udon style machines worked but I'm glad I know now, you may have just sent me down a, "how it works old school Japanese vending machines work" rabbit hole🤯🤯🤯🤯🖤
Would love a series of different machines all over Japan...
あのバーガーは特別な場所にいる雰囲気補正あってのものだからねw
Just amazing ,and Saitosan is a genius and national treasure. I'd seriously want to go there and spend a few days eating from these machines all day long. Thanks John for showing...
I absolutely miss these kinds of documentaries! Thanks so much John for doing these again!
i’ve never even been to japan and i can feel the nostalgia. it is probably the design, the vibes, or the cutlery i don’t know. today apple launch a freakin vr device and yet somewhere in japan there’s a man taking care of machine dated back from where microwave haven’t even exist. great video mr.
I saw the behind the scene video from Scotty and now we get to see the food being eaten
We need an Only In Japan vending machine! What would we sell?
what a great episode! very interesting to learn a little bit about the history of the machines and the japanese vending machine culture. too bad they're not as common anymore but i'm happy to see that this guy has a passion for them and wants to preserve and keep this cool part of japanse culture alive :)
"Its a perfect dump" -John Daub 2023
TM hahaha - it didn't come out the way I 'd expected.
I always loved the old automats and this just keeps that dream alive.
This is so cool and nostalgic. Thank you for putting in the effort to share this place and I am so glad I found your channel.
Love this video John! Informative, interesting and heartfelt all in one video! 😊👍
Looks like fun! I can't wait to go back. I went back in 2017 and I miss it
That vending machine with the bottle opener is the icon of convenience to me 😌👌. I wish we had these machines near where I live 🤗
I've seen a lot of RUclipsrs visit this site, but this video is on another level. Great video John.
why in the world is such a well produced video unlisted im lost
This park is a time capsule from an era long gone. Aah the nostalgia!🙏🏻🙏🏻
Your vids are the best, John! :D
Gotta have respect hats off to saito san!!!
Loved the curry easily slide out of that shiney packet to get every drop out!!!!
Great vid from the insides!!!! 👊🏻
P.s Scotty I could eat it John you are eating it!!!! 🤣👍🏻
The important thing is that these are maintained daily. Meanwhile, we don’t get new sandwiches in our vending machine until the old ones turn green or until the thing is pretty much empty.
I love this. I want to try the curry.
Very cool video, John. Thanks!
Saito-san and all the people keeping the machines stocked and maintained are heroes.
Two of my favorite people taking apart one of my favorite devices. Doesn't get much better than this.
