the irony of the ending is that lindsay was going to go to the summit, and mr rosso introducing her to the grateful dead is what eventually made her not go
If there was a s2 Lindsey would have had a near fatal OD while watching the dead and Rosso would have felt tremendous guilt for his role in teaching her about the dead.
If there was a season 2 bill would have learned basketball from fredricks and he would have became a jock, Neal would Have turned to drama to cope with his parents getting a divorce and sam would campaign against Cindy, who would absolutely hate him after they broke up, for a spot on student government
It stayed true to the theme of the show and Lindsey. She kept going back and forth from Geek to freak. She had to be her own person. Weather or not it was a good choice, that was the point of the show. It didn't always represent the "right" choice. But it showed the angst, emotion, and reality in there choices. However, I like that they foreshadowed that decision as an amazing one. A peaceful and exciting life changing experience. That rivals the academic summit in a completely different way.
I get really sad when she looks back at her mom and almost starts crying, she knows that she will be disappointed in her and that her life will never be the same. ;⌒;
That's right. She said in the last episode she'd always wanted to travel but either she didn't have the money or Daniel didn't wanna go anywhere. But now she gets to travel the country with Lindsay and the Deadheads.
HOW IN THE WORLD DID THIS SHOW ONLY LAST 1 SEASON.....its a travesty because it was one of the best season 1's ive ever seen, it had so much potential and then it was gone so quickly
You can see that they didn't break role at the very end either, and they actually did a good job of setting up for a new season even though it didn't happen; you can legit see Kim Kelly mouth 'I broke up with Daniel' at some point, then Lindsey acts really happy for her lmao
Questionably the best scene i've ever seen..seriously this episode is so great, it's a shame they ended the show so soon but im so glad that this is how they ended it. perfection.
The ending was great, but I think it would have been perfect if Nick, Ken and Daniel also would have been at the bus station to at least say good by and give her a hug..I think there was something missing without them
I actually liked that they weren't there and that it was only Kim, it made me think how as you grow, you make new friends and maybe you stop hanging out with people you used to be really close to, maybe you see their faults and you have matured and have different interests, that's okay. But I understand how you miss them, we got to know them a little better and they weren't in the final scene, and those two others were.
I'm so sad. I wish this show never ended :( Lindsay is the ONLY fictional character I can relate to because she's just like me. It's scary how accurate this show is. The only thing I can't relate to is having a best friend like Millie lol.
Man oh man this show was brilliant, but the ending has left me bitterly disappointed. Don't get me wrong it works in terms of wrapping up the story, but we know that was never the writers intention. So many unresolved story lines, think it will always bug me now knowing what became of the characters, especially Nick and Lindsey, seems almost cruel that their stroy had to end as it did.
I feel like that was a story arc that would never go anywhere on purpose, the point of the show was to represent accuratelly what it was like to be a teenager. That storyline felt particularly powerful because of how real it felt, things don't end, they just keep going. I really wanted the show to continue, but I also felt like that storyline benefited from the vagueness at the end, that last scene when they both know what happened, but can't do anything about it, and just keep going on doing their own things, felt really satisfying for me for how unsatisfying it was
am i the only one who thinks the ending would've been more perfect had it ended on either of these verses in Ripple: "There is a road, no simple highway, Between the dawn and the dark of night, And if you go no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone." or "You, who choose to lead, must follow But if you fall you fall alone. If you should stand then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home." I mean the ending is great and Ripple clearly struck a chord with people, but not using the above lyrics really feel like a missed connection. Maybe they thought it was too on the nose
Wow. I agree. While the song is a beautiful song to use for the last episode scene, and the entire song should define Lindsay's actions, using these exact lyrics for the end, while Lindsay's, leaves the camera, on the road, in the Dead-head van, would have been just flawless, and left you with a bit more to consume. Great idea, man. A truly missed opportunity.
In an earlier episode, Lindsay was intrigued by Jack Kerouac and the Beat Generation ....in this final episode, she's taking a trip "On the Road" to leave her home, separate from her family and become "her own person" - to go out into the world to explore, expand her consciousness and grow up into an adult. It's the perfect ending to a Coming of Age story. The characters are growing and changing .....the paradox of her initial enemy Kim becoming her close friend is so sweet. The poignant Grateful Dead ending song "Ripple" made it so beautiful.
I know it's been a long time since this episode aired, but I still find it hard to believe that this show is over and that everyone has moved on. This show was so amazing! I loved all of the characters and could relate to them all how we all can be a freak or a geek. Everything Sucks tried to be like freaks and geeks for this generation and got the same outcome. I don't know what's wrong with people how crap reality shows can last decades but great shows like this only get one season.
I think they should have showed what each of the main characters was doing at the end. I would have liked to see one last scene of Nick, Ken and Daniel.
I love how she feels sad for lying to everyone she loves, but still needs to experience something new just like me now, very conflicting, u wanna have fun, but ur parents want whats best for u, so u have to lie to not disappoint them
The Dead played some great shows in 1980, so Lindsay is in for a treat. Maybe she'll make it to a few shows during the Radio City Music Hall New York City run in October's 1980.
Hell yeah! Went to my first show in 88. Lost my ride home and just went on tour. Ended up living on a school bus and moving to California. It was awesome!!!! Best decision I ever made!
A nice detail to all of this: Lindsay is supposedly leaving to go to the academic summit. But we know that she meets her friends to hit the road for the 9 show stretch that the Grateful Dead played in 1981. The first show they were going to attend was on 7/2/1981 at The Summit in Houston, TX. She certainly will make the Weirs proud. Bob included.
Actually, they're sophomores, except for Daniel (and maybe Ken). Lindsay, Kim, and Millie are in class together in the episode where Millie's dog dies. Later in the episode, when Millie's mother tells her she can't go to the concert, she tells her "I'm 15 and I can do what I want." Unless Millie is smart enough to skip a grade, I'd assume she's a sophomore, along with Lindsay and Kim.
So she listens to American Beauty once, then proceeds to ditch her life to become a deadhead? My favorite show, but I always thought that was a little off
Nope, that was definitely true to the times. Back then here was no "badge of fandom" based on years followed or how much knowledge you have about the band. All were welcome.
2 Weeks of following the grateful dead on tour with friends is a waaaaay better use of her teen years than to go on an academic thing for college, she'll probably go to college anyway
The bus came by and she got on ... then she got off and got on a smaller bus and headed for Houston. The fact she's off on tour for about nine shows in a row for her first experience is a bit much, but very believable. She's not so much becoming a deadhead as just off on an adventure ... that happens to be awash in Grateful Dead.
@commandoslayer This is how it ends, its up to you to decide how it went on. From her personality I´d say she enjoyed herself doing what she wanted for the summer and then went to college. Up to you :D
Thanks for the info, Stephanie! I just watched the show for the first time last week.....watched all shows in 2 days, lol. Again, I didn't recall any mention of what year they were in, other than Daniel repeating twice. To tell the truth, I don't even recall the episodes in which his mother or parents were even in them, but I was fairly certain that they weren't Seniors. Again, thanks!
It's in the episode where Daniel goes to that punk rock concert (Episode 15). At the beginning of the episode, his mom asks him to stop at the pharmacy to pick up his dads prescription and he tells her that he can't because he has to go to school. They argue about it for a bit and she says, "You're 18. You're going to be the oldest junior in Michigan." It's the only time we see any of his family. I just started watching this 3 days ago myself. lol
I think that this show being only one season is the best part. They could burn through all of the good ideas and develop the characters in a logical manner. Any additional seasons would be watered down and ruin the pure awesomeness
My library had the whole season so I checked it out. I had never heard of it and debated on whether I should get it. I've renewed the dvd's the maximum amount of times now because I have a hard time returning them. I watch the show every day. I'm glad I can watch the episodes on RUclips.
@0xindependent23x0 Actually, the fact that it only lasted 1 season makes it all the more special. I've wacthed this series with my oldest son and am now just getting set to watch it with my youngest son now. I look forward to seeing each and every episode again and now that when that last scene plays out and I hear "Ripple" again, I will again shed so many tears. Thanks to Paul and Judd and the cast for such a special experience.
I just watched the final episode, after watching the entire season on IFC, and actually cried because I realized that there are no more episodes :( I really wish they would consider a reunion movie
Greatest TV show ever, along with Mad Men, in terms of historical accuracy. anyone that went to a public high school during the 1980-1981 academic school year will tell you how spot-on F&G was. It's a time machine to 42 years ago.
I always hate watching this episode, because I truly am saying goodbye to ALL of these characters for the last time. I especially hate that this was the start of Lindsay's "drug addiction" arc, as her following The Dead would lead to some bad habits.
Remember in the Halloween episode when she's dressed like a cowgirl and one of Sam's friends told her she looks like Richard Benjamin in WESTWORLD? LOL
There was a hippie resurgence in the later '80s and when I was in high school in the mid-90s there were a couple kids in my high school who were into the Grateful Dead and dressed like hippies.
If you think about it, if the show wasn't cancelled, it wouldn't have lasted much longer anyways. It is implied that Lindsay and her friends are Juniors. The school year ends in this first season which means they would only be in high school one more year, which would probably only account for one more season, two at most. Yeah, they could show her life after high school, but I don't think it would have been as interesting with only Sam dealing with high school social problems and not Lindsay.
According to the writers of there was a season 2 Lindsey would have a near fatal overdose at a dead concert which needless to say would have infuriated her parents especially since Harold saw the summit she blew off as completely non negotiable.
That is such a good point! They let you know enough about Lindsey to be assured that she wouldn't ruin her life. She has one hell of a backbone when pushed against the wall and she's only trying to find whats right for her.
Honestly... the best show I've ever seen. It's sad when it's all over but at the same time it's great that it never jumped the shark and outdid it's welcome. It went out on top.
She went to college after the summer? I never got the impression that she or her fellow "freak" students were Seniors, since they didn't show a graduation scene or anything. I never could tell as the story never really referenced what year of High School they were in.
@commandoslayer The interviews say she would have had a drug problem in the second season, it doesn't say what happened after that. I think Lindsey would have eventually gone to a good college, her grades managed to remain good even after hanging out with the freaks during her entire sophomore year. She is very smart and doesn't need to try hard.
When I was a kid, I thought Lindsay made the right decision going with Kim. Now many years later. I think she should have went to the school. But maybe that's because I hung out with hippies so long, I grew tired of their phony personalities and can't stand being around them anymore.
I wish this show went on forever...

Well you just hung out with the wrong hippies
This show deserved so much a better fate. It was great.
It just feels so fitting that the person Lindsay goes with is Kim. I loved this ending so much
Is that green army jacket keepin ya warm tonight Lady L
F&G is the story of my teenage years (somehow managed to straddle both paths simultaneously)

You know what happened to all the characters of this show? They died!
