  • Watch this America Right Now - Patriot of the Week interview about how Warriors Heart is Helping Vets One Step at a Time and a bold climb to Mt Kilimanjaro that required support systems. During this inspiring segment, Host Tom Basile interviews Warriors Heart President/Founder and Master Sergeant Tom Spooner and Warriors Heart Executive Director Command Center and US Marine Corps veteran Michael O’Dell about their journeys.
When asked about what started the journey to create Warriors Heart, Former Delta Operator Tom Spooner explained the program first started to combat the unacceptable veteran suicide rate.
Spooner expands that their 42-day in-patient treatment program helps active-duty military, veterans and first responders struggling with addiction, PTSD and co-occurring issues. He adds that their team works with clients to tackle both the trauma and the substance abuse.
When asked about his two climbs to Mt Kilimanjaro, O’Dell explains why his second climb in 2024 with the Task Force Expedition was much harder. Similar to his recovery journey, O’Dell had to take it One Step At A Time because he lost his prescription glasses on the plane on the way to Tanzania, which made it very difficult to see.
On Summit Day, O’Dell said it was especially challenging to climb in the dark. O’Dell then emphasizes that sometimes life is hard, and we have to have support systems to help us continue to take One Step at a Time (similar to the Warriors Heart recovery program, Alcoholics Anonymous, and his personal long-term recovery story).
