- A unique and creative collaboration between students, teachers, concrete artist Jackie K. Persson and Finja has resulted in this instructional video. In an accessible and inspirational manner, it demonstrates just how easy it is to create with concrete.
The motivation behind the film is to increase understanding and curiosity regarding our most common building material - so that, using an easy-to-follow step-by-step guide, more people will feel confident and motivated enough to give it a try.

I’m so thankful I found this video. I got the idea yesterday to create 7 to 8 foot tall palm tree bases so I can add actual ferns to them. And you gave me so much inspiration. Thank you so much.
For people asking about what kind of cement mix to use in the USA, look for stucco mix at the hardware store. Stucco uses the same process as these sculptures, with wire mesh covered by a base (scratch) coat and a second (brown) coat on top of that. Another possibility is mortar mix that is normally used to stick cement blocks together. If you have sanded tile grout left over from a project you could use that too.

What about the plastic deer fence to use instead of metal wire its a bit more flexible but giving smaller holes for concrete to adheres to also what about magazine or paper to use build up areas instead of styrofoam???
what about "sand mix" which I have, which contains portland cement & sand, plus some acrylic additive?

Hi! Concrete is a durable material and should be safe even really harsh winter. But we only sell our products in Sweden and Norway. So we can't vouche for the types of concrete you have in Canada. Happy scuplting!

Jackie, I just found your channel and am so exited to see how easy it seems to do sculpting in cement. The product you use is not a brand I can get at my local hardware store. What would be the equivalent that can get in USA?

In the USA, I’ve found that mortar works good.
@@jacquelinepersson1578 Based on my research, type m or s mortar, that can take stress... or better yet, I am going to first try "sand mix" concrete with a much higher strength, & that can take additives for even greater strength, like acrylic additive for concrete
once you finish the sculpture does it protect the foam from fire? Id like to make a fire pit out of cement but I've never sculpted anything like that yet.

Would it be posible to use plastic fencing to keep say deer out instead of the hard wire ? It would seem more plyable then the wire and easier to shape?? Alot of land scapers and home gardeners use this type of fencing? Enjoyed video found it interesting and adaptable to try..✍👩🎨🇨🇦🇺🇲💛

Great work with the kids! For an instructional video I would have preferred a description of the kids more 3d sculptures not the flat sun.

Thank you for great video! What is the working time in both layers?
I would recommend 1-1 ½ hours on first layer and 3-4 hours on the second. This is an example of beginner time for a sculpture like the sun in the film.
Does the glass need to be embedded below 50% or is the concrete like glue and will hold the glass?

I recently had some quickcrete mixed that I wasn't going to use, so I formed it in the shape of a sea turtle quickly. I want to now paint it, but it's very rough- is there something I can use to smooth the surface? This video will be a great help for future projects!

Why do we need the styrofoam between the metal structure?
Thank you for your comment. In certain parts of the sculpture that don’t need too much support in the overall sculpture, Jackie found that putting syrofoam(garbage picked of course👍🏼) holds the concrete in the net for a thinner layer(s). Also to make the sculpture not as heavy. But most importantly, concrete when dried moves in hot or cold weather. Having parts of the sculpture hollow (using styrofoam) prevents any deep cracks from that movement. / Finja

hello, I would like to make a cement sculpture of a horse head...can some one recommend a soft material that will stay soft for 1-2 weeks until I finish sculpturing it and than prepare a mold?\thanks

Hi, what's the purpose of the Styrofoam and wire? Could I just leave that out for my project? (I'm doing a face planter)
Hello Sophia and thank you for your question. The Styrofoam makes the sculpture lighter, a sculpture only made out of concrete can get pretty heavy. The net is used as reinforcement which partly makes your sculpture durable and partly makes the concrete attach better. Good luck with your project. Thanks for watching. / Finja

Jackie uses a dry concretemix, Finjas Finbetong, and just ads water to it. For small projects you can mix it by hand, with a shovel for example. Always use gloves and safetyglasses.

What’s the point of two layers of u want couldn’t u do it in one shot?
Hi Nicolas and thank you for your question. Jackie makes two different layers as the first layer is a little harder and offers a good foundation for the second layer with concrete. This makes the sculpture easier to work with. There's really no right or wrong when it comes to making art, so just give it a try:). Thank you for watching our movies. / Finja
You have more control with sculpting the second layer if the first layer has hardened .
3 weeks drying time?!?

The time for drying is based och how "wet" your concrete is. When you're working with sculptures and a mixture with more water, the drying time gets longer.

You are sculpting in cement, not concrete. They're different materials. Concrete has aggregate in it.
