    Im surprised he didnt mention the introduction of loot boxes, and the shift away from earning cool skins and acolades to simply purchasing them. That was a huge reason people lost interest, there was no reason to invest time into the game anymore, and if you did it felt worthless because people could just buy cooler or more useful things.

    People never talk about the feeling that the newbs had, when they get killed a few times over to get that 1 kill back at your nemesis of the match. That feeling was like crack, which is probably why even newbs loved playing the game. That feeling of crossing the skill gap, if only a for a few seconds, and relishing in it. The destruction of that skill gap had undermined the very foundation of what made the game fun to play.

      Skill based matchmaking makes it very difficult to feel as though you are actually improving at the game as when you get better you play better players and thus keeping your performance relatively similar. Unless you have a real love for the game why would you continue to play if you don’t get the feeling of climbing the skill ladder…

      And your point is irrelevant to this topic, on your way to global elite you can visually see your rank improving which is validation of your improvement. When you add sbmm to casual modes ie. cod multiplayer there is no visual improvement, and for your higher performance you meet higher skilled players meaning your overall visual performance in the way of kills/deaths/score roughly the same.

    Xqc is wrong about SBMM. Sure you are not good at the game if you cant beat people at your own level, but sbmm doesnt work exactly like it should. You dont really get opponents who play like you, you get opponents who have similar stats to you. Or number of wins etc. That isnt a perfect measure of skill. Also in sbmm, every opponent is your mirror opponent. Its good for practise and getting better but it completely eliminates casual play. The fun thing about random matchmaking is that you find people with random skill levels. You beat those you are better than and lose to the more skilled ones. Or you even beat them. But every match has ups and downs, some easy fights and hard fights for every player. Sbmm makes every match the same, every fight 100% tryhard level. It is simply not fun. And that is where competitive play and casual gamers differentiate. Sbmm should be in competitive ladders only. But so many games are just pushing it as the default.

    • @aesthetic7574
      @aesthetic7574 Год назад +25

      Exactly what I was thinking. Imo the last good game they made was bo3, everything after that is just unplayable with the SBMM that was implemented. • @Hietakissa
      @Hietakissa Год назад +9

      even if it's casual without sbmm you will get opponents who absolutely destroy you, and you will get opponents who are trash and you obliterate them, neither scenario is fun, sbmm when implemented properly makes the matches fair and thus more engaging and fun

    The idea that skill based matchmaking is good makes sense when it’s rewarded (such as league play) .. if you are playing against people who are evenly skilled every game then high killstreaks (especially Nukes) would almost never happen and these high kill streaks are part of what made cod so amazing .. if everyone is perfectly even then it’s 50/50 every time your fighting. This means something like a chopper gunner has a probability of 0.5^9, which means you’d have a 0.1% chance of a chopper gunner. One of the best parts about COD was pub-stomping (I think that’s pretty widely agreed upon) and they ruined that with their SBMM. If you want skilled play against even players all the time then gtfo and queue league play but why should everyone be forced into that? Pub stomping made COD great and it was the removal of it that killed COD.

    The Problem with SBMM is that it's waaaaay to strict. I 100% believe that it should be in the game, I don't want to play against little 7 year old Timmy who got on his dad's PlayStation to, nor do I want to play against disabled gamers, it's not fun for me and it can ruin the experience for them, same reason why playing against bot's is only fun for a little bit before it gets boring. The problem arises because if you are any good at the game you basically play against players that are of your skill level or better than you, so if you're of a high or moderately high skill every single one of your games turns into a sweat fest. They need to open up the pool more 1 for better connections and shorter wait times, but also so people that are good at the game don't have to tryhard every single match, sure don't take out SBMM but loosen the restrictions.

    Sbmm literally ruined fps games. Idiots that don't understand the full picture will say that it was implemented to satisfy good players but that's bogus, the reason it was added is to keep shit players happy and let's face it there are more new/shit players so it's a obvious marketing move but with that said people don't improve as much now. Back in the day you were forced to practice and play for hours because you were tired of getting shit on by good players so you finally became good and you were the one shitting on the bad players that's why the games were so fun back in the day. It gave you a reward and feel of accomplishment that you don't get anymore. And if you wanted to be more ambitious and competitive you always had the opportunity to play ranked where sbmm should be a necessity. It's also simply impossible to be the best at a video game not everyone wants to sweat and try hard like their life depends on it plus at some point you fall off, younger pros come up and smack you down, and that's why people prefer casual over competitive and even without sbmm you never know who you'll face so you always had that hard match once in a while, keeping every skill gap together simply makes games much more fun

    Being bad at a game never, ever got in the way of people's enjoyment. If that were the case, these games would have sold significantly less until they implemented SBMM.
    One of the biggest draws to the game was getting killstreaks, which has become significantly harder as the years have gone by. Learning to get good enough at something so that you can dominate in that field is so rewarding I don't think people understand, and that's just not a feeling you're EVER going to get with SBMM. There's only one state you're going the be feeling, and that's indifference.
    I totally agree that noob-tubes and dumb goofy shit was the key to MW2's success. It was just bonkers and balls-to-the-wall fun to play with your friends. Sometimes just loosening up as a developer and not worrying so much about grinding the game down until everything is perfectly balanced is a good idea.

    COD used to be really good, Black Ops 2 I remember being one of the best besides the MW Series because that series was honestly just legendary.
    I feel like the downfall though was when they released Ghosts, I mean don't get me wrong, the Story was good (to an extent, considering the scene reusal in some aspects) but it just didn't hit. After that it kinda just went downhill with Treyarch leaving the COD series behind and just Slegehammer and Infinity Ward making it instead. It's just been one letdown after another and I honestly don't see any point as to buying it anymore because it's the same formula that they've been doing for years without introducing anything new like they did back in the day

    SBMM doesn't belong in unranked casual game modes like 90% of cod. Make a couple Ranked playlists with killstreaks and MLG settings or whatever for the sweats to play each other in. Theres no reason I should be getting put on 80-100ping servers at 8pm just because my SPM and K/D are above average. Match make based on ping, stop putting dogshit players on my team just because there is a 3-man premade on the other team with decent stats

    I think the reason it lost popularity is more complex than this. First of all, there is a lot more competition now than there were back then. Fortninte, Apex, PUBG, OW, Valorant, CSGO, the amount of popular FPS games are just a lot higher now than it was then. Second, I think the reason games like CSGO and League of legends are able to maintain such high playerbases for so long despite the games being mostly the same (core gameplay atleast), is because people actually have time to play them, and improve on them, plus the devs are able to adjust and tune the games over time into something that is more balanced and enjoyable. COD releases every year which means everything you did in the last COD, doesn't mean anything anymore because everyone moves on to the next one. That includes progress (levels, guns etc) but more importantly, knowledge and familiarity. Losing everything every year get's boring after a while. I think if activision made ONE, call of duty. The best maps, the best guns, and the best mechanics from throughout the series, and actually stayed with that game for a long time, then I am certain COD could make a great comeback. So many of the great maps in COD are lost, because the new games has to be somewhat different. No cod is perfect, and if there is a perfect COD, it mostly last about a year or two anyway because of the constant releases.

  • @_Unlived_

    Ghosts was my first cod game because it was 15 years and my mom would never let me touch 16+ games. When you have no expectations, anything that beats them even slightly is fantastic to you. I loved ghosts. I spend half my total multiplayer time in infected playing hide and seek on public lobbies. The aliens were also suprisingly fantastic. The extreme difficulty (for a 10 year old) and the progression through the map made it so entertaining to keep trying and trying to beat it.

    I disagree with X's skill based matchmaking take. In competitive modes it absolutely makes sense. In quick play gamemodes it doesn't and I'll explain why I believe this.
    You start out trash at the game and you have to earn the skill. You essentially earn the right to "shit on noobs". You get a larger queue of players to play with and against of all skill levels, so the games are more dynamic in skill level. Some games youll get a mix of good players, bad players, more of one or another. With skill based matchmaking, every game is essentially the same as far as challenge. You are constantly playing against sweats which a lot of people find boring when you just want to run and gun for fun in a quickplay match. If you want to take the game seriously and sweat, play competitive and tryhard all you want while progressing your visual rank that represents your earned skill.
    My take is the reverse of X's; trash players want skill based match making so they don't have to worry about getting better.

    He used repetitiveness as a reason why it failed.. but really, it failed because of the opposite. Because they tried to change things that weren't broken, innovate things that don't need to be innovated, added mechanics to the game nobody asked for or wanted. COD died because they constantly tried to change a tried things. You ask anyone who likes the older cods and they'll say they'd rather a remake of the older ones than something new. I want a remake of BO2 rather than them trying to reinvent the wheel of COD. Not only that, not releasing a game every year as well. People like to shit on COD for being the same every year when it really isn't. Also, SBMM ruined it as well. Casual gamemodes should never have SBMM. Add league play or something similar and then have SBMM. Shitting on a bad team or being shit on is part of the COD experience. Having all one or the other is bad, which is what SBMM forces.
