Check out the CRJ-100, a beast of a plane at 39.13 meters long, landing on the runway at Bern Airport, which is only 30 meters wide and just 1730 meters long! Don't worry though, there's a widening at the end of the runway for this big bird to do a safe turn. It's one of the largest planes here at Bern in Switzerland!
I fly the shorter variants of the CRJ (700 and 900) as we dont have the 1000 in the USA and anything under 6000ft is short indeed! These guys did a great job with a safe and firm touchdown right in the touchdown zone with no float. The shortest runway I've landed on in the CRJ was 5200ft (~1580m) in Lake Charles, LA. This was the absolute shortest runway allowed as our SOP requires 5200ft or more. The departure captured in this video appears to be a "maximum performance" takeoff. Bleeds closed (I can see the APU door open and therefore running), flaps 20 with a stationary MCT takeoff.
Thank you very much for your profound comment, Ryan. It's always nice to hear from a pilot. Much appreciate your interesting information!! The CRJ1000 was expected here in Bern even the weekend before last. But because the runway was in a wet condition, although the weather was dry, the plane could not land according to the pilot's radio. The braking distance simply seems to be too long for the 1,730 m short runway. And as far as I know, only up to 60 passengers can be transported from Bern, i.e. 60% full. In my opinion, this is not the right aircraft for Bern. It's really nice to see this plane here in Bern for me as an aviation enthusiast, but I think it's completely unprofitable to operate from Bern. Wishing you many happy flights and thank you very much again for your nice comment, Matt
That maybe a smaller airport, but they get a great variety of aircraft. We're lucky we have a diehard enthusiast like you to capture it all for the rest of us. Thank you again Matt!!

Nice tight approach and firm landing, that's really cool to see this long CRJ visiting Bern! Great surprise seeing the stunning DC-3 in there as well, what a beauty. It looks like the pilots really have to pay attention handling the CRJ on the ground there, that turn-around at the end of the runway looks tight. Love that close-up shot of the CRJ powering down the runway!

Very interesting capture! You don’t often see that aircraft in Bern! Indeed it’s not worth to take only 60 pax to Bern back and forth, so that charter flight was quite unusual! Great filming! Loved that sound during departure!!

@@MattsAviationChannel I can never shake off the feeling that a Q400 is a CRJ with props the noses look so similar! But yea this 1000 looks massive at that small airport. I rode in the smaller version (on Eurowings) and found it very quiet. This must be a big deal at your small airport there. Dont want any noisy howling jets!

Vielen Dank!

As I'm watching this video, I was thinking how much parallel evolution applies to airplanes as it does to animals. Just as pythons and boa snakes are completely different families from different parts of the world, the CRJ-1000 bears a striking resemblance to the DC-9 stretch variants like the MD-80. And those planes bear a marked resemblance to the Fokker 100, also a stretched aircraft. Form follows function. The DC-3 also got me thinking: The age difference between the DC-3 and the DC-9 is surprisingly short: a mere 30 years between launch dates (1935 and 1965). That means the DC-9 was launched almost 60 years ago, *twice* the length of time between that and the DC-3!
Thank you very much for your nice comment, George. I really hoped you would watch this video because of your beloved Douglas DC-3. Hey Bruce, thank you for your question! The CRJ-1000 is the largest member of the Bombardier CRJ family, with a length of 39.13 meters, making it longer than other CRJ models. I'm thinking that plane was heavy. They spooled up before brake release, sounded like flex power was set to max, slow acceleration, aggressive flap setting. I don't know the airport altitude though or the temperature so there's that.
Thank you, Bruce. You are absolutely right, the take-off was indeed very special with full power, flaps settings, APU running... it was not that heavy but the runway length at Bern is very limited. And the engines are rather underpowered compared to other aircraft models. Certainly a question of taste, but I think the constant extensions of this aircraft have long been exaggerated. In terms of design, for example, I find the length of the fuselage in relation to the tiny engines downright ridiculous.

Thank you! It's truly impressive to see such a beast of a plane maneuver on a relatively narrow runway. However, these engines are considered underpowered compared to those on other aircraft models. Thank you for sharing your observation! The CRJ1000 does have a unique appearance, with its elongated fuselage and seemingly oversized engines. This aircraft, manufactured by Bombardier, is actually the largest of the CRJ series, capable of seating up to 104 passengers. Thank you for watching the video! ✈️🛬It's one of the largest planes operating at Bern Airport. ✈️📸
👏👏👏
This morning in my airport. Charter flight with Skyexpress A320Neo SX-CRE to Larnaca Cyprus
And of course it isn’t only the runway length that matters, it’s what’s at the end of it!
WOW! Was für ein Landeanflug! Ich bin begeistert!

And yes, you are right. It is always fascinating to see the Grand Old Lady DC-3! N431HM was built in 1943 as a USAF military transporter 42-24133. From the USA to the UK, serving as a movie star and air show attraction, it then found itself in Switzerland. After serving as a spare part donor, it was overhauled and revived by Classic Air in 1986, taking flight with a new registration as HB-ISC. Today, under a private ownership, this legendary aircraft continues to captivate audiences, leading the Classic Formation at airshows.

A flying cigar !
So Matt - what does the CRJ-1000 have that the other Bombardier CRJ models don't have?
Hey Bruce, thank you for your question! The CRJ-1000 is the largest member of the Bombardier CRJ family, with a length of 39.13 meters, making it longer than other CRJ models. One key feature that sets the CRJ-1000 apart is its increased seating capacity, with the ability to accommodate up to 104 passengers in a typical two-class configuration. It's impressive to see such a large aircraft maneuver on a runway that is only 30 meters wide and 1730 meters long. But no worries, the widening at the end of the runway allows for a safe turn. It's one of the largest planes operating at Bern Airport.
But it is very impressive to see such a large aircraft maneuver on a runway that is only 30 meters wide and 1730 meters long. Wow not much room for rejected take off 💪🏻😎🛩

Wow! A bit of a big boy that one is..

Is this Iberia flight from/to Mallorca ?
Yes, that is right. They have a weekly service between Bern and Palma de Mallorca.
Its so big, but the engines look disproportional lol. Its like the opposite of a Citation X
Still a beauty though!

Any flight details known?

Hab es gefunden: Palma-Bern Palma am Sonntag...
Genau, steht auch so in der Videobeschreibung.
Certainly a question of taste, but I think the constant extensions of this aircraft have long been exaggerated. In terms of design, for example, I find the length of the fuselage in relation to the tiny engines downright ridiculous.
Waah
Thank you very much!
waw

The engines are so tiny, the shorter business jet derivatives Global 5500 and 6500 have bigger engines.😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you! It's truly impressive to see such a beast of a plane maneuver on a relatively narrow runway. However, these engines are considered underpowered compared to those on other aircraft models. The proportions of this CFJ look all wrong, pencil thin fuselage, engines look oversized…
Thank you for sharing your observation! The CRJ1000 does have a unique appearance, with its elongated fuselage and seemingly oversized engines. This aircraft, manufactured by Bombardier, is actually the largest of the CRJ series, capable of seating up to 104 passengers.
