I don`t normally write comments on RUclips, but this time I have to. I`m from Denmark, and we`ve had 2(3) of these machines on our golf course for about 6 month now. I work as part time mechanic in the club and know my way around machinery. Sadly I can`t recognize the piture painted in this video. We`ve had all sorts of problems and breakdowns. We have had to put up big transmissions masts in order to reach entire lenght of fairways. Two machines and two charging stations for 9 fairways. Our knives certainly don`t last that long. They get dull or torn off the machine if they meet a solid objects as rocks/branches/pile of dirt from animals ect. We have to check them on a daily basis to make sure everything is ok. As you can tell I`m not a big fan (yet). Solid improvements have to be made to the machines and software..........
great little machines. Our local course has 2. one to cut grass on driving range and 1 to collect the balls up. our local range has large tractor tyres for aiming at and these just stop withing inches of them, turn and cut around the edge.. excellent kit.
they are tremendous bits of kit i have one for the lawn at home after seeing one at our club that cuts the practice area. Brilliant in the summer coming home from work having a cold beer while waiting the lawn being cut .
I play sometimes at Cranham golf course, which is in Essex. They have these and they run all day. All golfers are used to them and are careful to avoid them during play. I think they are fantastic. The fairways are some of the best I have played.
As a green's keeper I think that is awesome, it would open up time for the guys to do other stuff, I am going to show this to the club owner, great video Liam
That’s what I love about Liam and Golf Mates , not just mates travelling together around the world but also innovative new ideas and products that can only help the game we love , absolute no brainier that clever little electric machine .
Good Evening Graham and Warren You have overlooked one major 'con' in the use of these machines at night ie THEFT. Two men could lift and carry one of the mowers off. I wouldn't advise their use during darkness unless you beef up your security.
They won't work with out the Dock and the mast which are both programmed to each machine. And they are GPS tracked. And I can see where it is anywhere in the world. One got stolen in Merseyside and the police tracked it to the car it was in.
So basic business laws here, these mowers increase base line costs as an outlay so 1, charge more to cover that 2, reduce other costs to cover expenditure, I think they are great they even go back to there charging points to sleep and charge, I've built little kennels for them at a rich folks gafe, (orange blob on lawn offended there eye) didn't sack gardener just reduced his hours. Tethered goats better at keeping grass in order but golf ball in head often upsets them.
I bought one 7 years ago as my garden is 3/4 acre, and used to take forever to mow, 3:58 plus I ended up with tons of clippings. Now I have time to play golf instead of cutting grass. One of my better decisions.. deffo this is the future for golf courses.....
That was a wow moment video, Liam. Going by the owner and green keeper, these machines are a win on costs, a win on labour, and a win on environmental costs. Well done to Team Golfmates.😊
What a great video Liam 👏🏻👏🏻 like some people have already said the only down side I can see is vandalism but as a course purchased more machines over time the usage at night would reduce. using solar power for recharging has to be the way forward. The freeing up of greenstaff time for more labour intensive jobs has to be a benefit.
The beauty of automation is that it gives people the time to focus on those things require human attention. Now, greenskeepers can spend their time perfecting the greens, altering courses, or those other tasks they would love to be doing instead of sitting on a mower for hours at a time. Keep exploring the business side of golf in your videos; it's very interesting.
Green keepers will still have a job fishing these things out of bunkers and ponds. Would imagine they are pinchable. Would be Interesting to see what they did if they came across cows sheep rabbits rabbit holes
I’ve seen these ‘gadgets’ come and go over 30 years of club management; from the promises of 50% savings on watering programs, to eliminating pieces of equipment, savings on chem and fert, to 50% savings in f&b. Thinking that this will not eliminate jobs is akin to putting your head in the sand. This is a great idea for a government golf course, but any Director of Agronomy or Golf Course Superintendent worth mentioning would only consider something like this for a driving range or possibly the facilities short course if you are lacking labor. No chance in hell of being proud to put your name on a golf course maintained by this product.
these are a great piece of equipment, and should be on every golf course in the country. The only thing I think stopping certain courses is vandalisers, because it's bound to happen in certain parts of the country where courses are free to walk around etc
Wow That could be a game changer i know what its like to cut fairways with a machine and its noisy sat in a tractor with gangs behind you and very hard to get the lines absolutely spot on . Hopefully they catch on . Great video Liam
we (Germany) got them (2) for fairways since nearly 1,5 years and they do a great job! Better than ever before with manpower and cut fairways 2 3 times / week!
Liam I seen these working last year when I was on a Golf Holiday in Vilamoura and wondered what they were all about. To be fair they were using the small one as it was cutting the semi around the practice putting greens. Unbelievable how technology is changing and taking over everything, like you my fear is how many more jobs will be lost to robots 🤔
This was fascinating! Thanks so much for putting on your reporter hat and kudos to the fellas for being interviewed and educating us all on something very innovative.
Great video Liam...I'm surprised that this isn't taking off everywhere. My neighbor has a robotic grass cutter and it automatically finds its way back to home base...its charger and then when charged, goes back out. It's really pretty cool.
Warren showed me them a few weeks ago, I thought they were awesome.. I’ve mentioned them to numerous clubs since (including my own), definitely the future.. As for greens staff, there’s a huge shortage and fewer youngsters coming into the industry, so this could/would solve that issue.. Let the green keepers green keep, let the robots cut😉😉
"Robots" Lane machine put down oil patterns in bowling alleys. Set the program for easy wall patterns to difficult flatter patterns and only stops to have tech/mechanic add oil depending how many lanes in the house/bowling alley. So, this is the future for golf I'm sure. Still need the tech/mechanic to get these robots going and put away.
This is the type of thing that will help clubs survive, the savings must be enormous. The benefits of reducing the carbon footprint is a must for all businesses, it shows that somewhere like Carus Green is trying to its bit. Great vid Liam. 👍
These look brilliant for clubs, means the staff can concentrate on tip top greens. One problem I foresee, what stops hoodlums pinching them in the middle of the night?
There’s a robotic mower at Cranham but it’s the Belrobotics one that AMS do and they are probably the best fairways I’ve played especially for the time of year
Only a couple of issues I can see with this, 1 if your out playing this can chop your ball up, (as he said the balls on the range need to be collected before it can start cutting) 2 the great British weather as you know we do get a lot of rain and our course is closed due to being waterlogged it is possible it could get stuck if mowing at night, just my opinion everyone’s allowed one 😊
Its a fantastic concept, here in Manchester I wonder how long they would last if cutting overnight with the local "Scroutts" who like to cause damage on the golf course. We have had 2 portacabins ruined in 6 months one was completely burned down!!
Perhaps an ice chest (esky) strapped to the back full of beer could be a secondary use also !!! Stand in front of it, walk up, grab yourself a nice cold beer!! Always thinkin’ I am. 🍺🍻
I wonder how long the batteries last before having to be replaced and what new batteries cost? Also will these mowers stop if there is a golf ball in their path?
I was extremely interested in this and made enquiries with Husqvarna for a demo. But having read through the specifications for both EPOS 544 & 546 units, the minimum cutting height is 20mm. Which poses the question how useful it would be for UK fairways as most are cut at a max of 15mm ???
That was really interesting Liam. Quality of cut looked superb, as did the straightness. They'll cut in any weather too as theres no weight to cause ruts or depressions in wet conditions...doesn't look like they will miss much with them being smaller than the cassette reels on a traditional triplex Looks like the way forward 👌
This is definitely a game changer for golf clubs. Massive savings for a start and I reckon it would work great on even the uneven ground of the links courses up here in Scotland.
Hey Liam, anything that helps a golf club work better for it's members and staff is a worthwhile investment. My business specialises in business finance and we have helped fund these type of machinery but not yet for a golf club. Would be great if we did more. Hope to see you next year when I'm back playing
Really interesting video, it looks like it gives big savings and also would improve the quality of golf courses as green keepers can work on other improvements to the course.
@@GolfMates I have, they can say they will spend more time on this, that and the other but any business will want more profit over lemmings wages, automation WILL mean the loss of jobs worldwide and I won't support businesses that do. I refuse to use self-serve or cashless businesses.
i understand it will stop if a person is in front of it. but what about a ball you just hit in the fairway will it see it or will it run it over and chop it to bits?
I hope it works out for owners, greenskeepers and golfers. I wonder what the actual longevity is (not claimed by manufacturer), at less than 10% of the cost, compared to gas mowers? Also, I'd hate to see one catch fire like the Toro zero turn did in the U.S. at an outdoor equipment show. It burned so hot the fire dept just let it burn. If I could only get a robot to hit the ball for me😁😁
Nice idea and a huge cost saving ...but!.......... it takes away the evil from the greenkeeper for say a club champpionship when they narrow fairways just because they can ! :D ).
Great idea but very stealable at night .Need Trackers on them if not already on . Some undesirable will have a go .let's hope all is ok Gives green keepers time to do more intricate jobs. Low level Drones needed to blow dew off on greens👍
You asked about the pros Liam but didn’t press anyone re the cons. What happens to the grass clippings? Seems like they’re just left rather than collected. I’m no expert but wouldn’t that lead to issues with disease and excess thatch etc?
I'm only a 3rd of the way through an he will prob say it but taking the hrs away from mowing the fairways will free the green keepers up to do other jobs about the course that they otherwize couldn't do 🤔 it's a clever idea

My mate over in Northallerton has one of these mowers for his acreage, he calls it "Bob" LOL it goes out every day and cuts the whole acreage.
