The other day they took off, trying to do a burnout, and the smokers standing there waiting for the next shift to start started talking bout it and I was like "You think that's cool? Best vehicle I ever owned was a 1988 Toyota 4Runner. It had a 4 cyl 22RE motor, small lift with huge tires (like that when I bought it), and a 5 speed transmission. Before going to college, I gave it to my dad because I wanted something smaller for the travelling. It had 300k miles on it. He drove it for years, putting another 300k miles on it. The body rusted in half, and a guy bought the motor to put in his truck, and is still driving it today. Never had an issue with that little motor.

    The CVT in hybrid toyota is different from CVT in gas toyotas. The hybrid one is planetary gears (power split device) called eCVT. The other one is two cones and they are just like you said they do slip. The solution to that it has a dedicated discreet gear called launch gear.

    • @cc-tb3st
      @cc-tb3st 5 месяцев назад +1

      Nobody knows this. Everyone thinks the hybrid ecvt is a belt. No belt at all, it's actually a differential. Toyota does things and names things for marketing for the lowest common denominator customer. For example, using a gas engine instead of diesel on Prius, a car designed for fuel mileage. Diesel would be so much better but the average consumer wouldn't buy it because they aren't familiar with diesel. Or the artificial drag Toyota put when you release the gas to imitate the drag of a normal car. Even though that drag is being turned into energy stored in the battery for use later, it's still more efficient to conserve momentum and not artificially slow the car.
      I love my Prius, but I would love it even more if it was diesel and didn't have the artificial drag. I also wish the diesel was a generator and didn't actually drive the wheels. It just put energy in the battery and electric motors actually did all the work. Exactly like the new Edison semi.

    The biggest problem with American automotive companies is that they start at the bottom line profit and work everything in from there. The first thing they should do is make all engineers work on the assembly line and also make them listen to the production crew about problems or ideas. I worked in Research and Development with all type engineers/designers and were taught to keep our ears and eyes open for total input. An example is our operating manual was written by Tech Writers but tested by our secretaries who never touched the machine. So many little things were found that were left out or put in the wrong steps. Our production workers found steps to make it easier to install some of the modules.

    I see a parallel in the building industry: main companies using sub-contractors to finish a project in order to cut the cost of directly-employed staff. The 'subbies' and the transmissions from a different maker have less commitment to excellence because their name is not on the main product and they have no share in the profit (if there is one). Economists call this the casualisation of labour but Scotty with his poetic turn of phrase would probably call it 'a pile of crap'. He would be right.

And you also have different types of CVTs as well. the type they use on Toyota cars, uses a steel belt to transfer power between varying pulley. And a lot of tractors anymore, use a hydrostatic transmission; changes gears by varying the swept area on a piston pump. There was a bus, in the 1960s, that only had a single forward and reverse gear; however power was transferred straight through a torque converter. And of course my favorite example; every diesel locomotive, built since the 1950s, has used some form of generator to power traction motors; and they changed gears by simply altering the strength of the generators field coils.

      @MainMite06 4 года назад

      The CVT fluid isnt being spoiled from actuating motion from the pumps,
      *The fluid is getting spoiled from high engine heat*
      Modern day cars deliberatly run 180+ degrees fahrenheit as a homeostatic temperature to clean the emissions at the cost of engine power.
      Epicyclic transmissions are designed to handle high heat,
      in fact they can run their best in high heat,
      Because epicyclic transmissions use a mix heavy petroleum/mineral oil thats meant to control friction rather than lubricating metal as priority
      CVTs on the other hand use a mineral oil thats more relatable to dot3-4 brake fluid than ATF.
      The CVT fluid is designed to be more of a lubricant than a friction modifier,
      In truth
      CVT fluids dont like high heat,
      this is has been the true crux of why CVTs been failing before 50K miles.
      The poor CVT has to deal with the heat of it needing to actuate it's pumps while being to attatched to a lava-hot ICE
      The fluid can be poured in red or clear grey, and then after 40K miles
      it could be drained out motor oil black.
      CVT fluids are freakin' weaksauce

    the bulletproof CVT's are known as eCVT's, these are used in the famously reliable Prius lineup. Conventional CVT's remain to be known as crap.

    Toyota hybrid vehicles use a different type of CVT. It’s called an ECVT where it uses a planetary gearset instead of a steel belt drive.
