Official LEGO Press Release:
BUILD YOUR OWN ICON: INTRODUCING THE LEGO TECHNIC LAND ROVER DEFENDER
LEGO Technic Land Rover Defender set launches alongside New Land Rover Defender at 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show
2,573-piece LEGO model developed with Land Rover to include authentic bodywork and a host of realistic functions
Features in-line six-cylinder engine, gearbox with high and low ratios, independent suspension, expedition roof rack and a working winch
LEGO Technic Land Rover Defender on sale globally from 1 October 2019
Frankfurt, 11th September 2019 - The new LEGO Technic Land Rover Defender is an automotive icon you can build at home. Developed in partnership with Land Rover and launched alongside the New Defender at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the 2,573-piece model combines the boundless creativity of LEGO with New Defender’s instantly recognizable silhouette and unrivaled capability
The LEGO Technic vehicle echoes New Defender with a host of realistic elements and functions, including authentic body panels and rims, four-wheel drive with three differentials, fully independent suspension, a working winch and LEGO Technic’s most sophisticated gearbox yet - all designed to provide an engrossing and rewarding building experience for car lovers and LEGO fans alike.
Niels Henrik Horsted, Marketing Director at the LEGO Group, said: “With every LEGO element, children can build anything they can imagine. I’m very excited about this new model - a truly impressive job done by our LEGO designers. Together with Land Rover, we’ve blended elements, design and innovative engineering into a set that shows the boundless creativity of LEGO play, and that with LEGO Technic you can build for real.”
Joe Sinclair, Director of Branded Goods and Licensing at Jaguar Land Rover, said: “The Land Rover Defender and LEGO brand are both iconic across the world, and the launch of New Defender felt like the perfect time to bring them together. The level of detail and engineering that has gone into creating this LEGO model perfectly reflects the work of our own designers and engineers who have been so dedicated to bringing a motoring icon back for the 21st century.”
Opening doors allow access to the model’s elaborate cabin with its working steering wheel and detailed dashboard. A new transmission system has two levers for engaging high or low ratios and a selector for changing gear - LEGO Technic’s most sophisticated gearbox yet. You can also fold the rear seat forward to view the four-speed sequential gearbox, lift the bonnet to view the in-line six cylinder engine with moving pistons and turn the rear-mounted spare wheel to open the rear door.
Reflecting the action-fueled accessories available for the full-size New Defender, the model is finished with a working winch, removable roof rack with storage box, pannier, ladder and traction mats.
The LEGO Technic Land Rover Defender set will be available globally from 1 October 2019.

Look great Greg my hubby is a bit of a car enthusiast....lol that what he likes to watch on you tube I’ll tell him about that LEGO one but we probably not get it.
I doubt it's everyone's cup of tea, although it is rather cool if you like Technic. A lot of good stuff packed into it, although don't think the photos they've shared really do it justice from what I can tell! They shoe-horned a lot into it!
Hi Greg
On the set: I think it’s darn good. No, really very good! I think it comes with a “working” engine so I’m not sure if you can motorise it? But the designer has knocked this one out of the park!
On the car: on the face of it, I think it looks awesome! But, having watched a few videos on YT, I’m not sure how this once-workhorse of military organisations all over the world, including the British army. And a vehicle beloved by farmers everywhere, will work? JLR have taken a tough and hard working vehicle and turned it into the type of vehicle driven by hairdressers from Billericay!
Unless JLR are also building a stripped back military/civil defence version I can’t see the MOD shelling out £40,000 plus for what is essentially a Chelsea Tractor!
I can imagine the new Defender being quite polarising. They were never, ever going to make everyone happy when something was as iconic as the old Land Rover Defender! But I like it! Think it's bold and smart in all the right places. And not a terrible price.
And likewise the technic version is a good price and packed to the brim with features that I don't think came across in the video - unless you froze it at the building screen where you can see how much is in it! I am tempted by this set I have to say...
To your "workhorse" version, I think you might be surprise with how it's engineered from what I've read. Let's hope so anyway as I want it to be more than a hairdressers car so I can buy one when I'm maybe rich one day!
GJBricks ...I did read today that JLR are releasing two commercial versions of the Defender. I can image they’ll be stripped right back.
I agree, I do like the real version. And, to be honest, even at the end of its run, it had become less of a farmers runabout to more of a Chelsea Tractor. A bit like how the Mercedes G Wagon has gone from being an everyday military truck to a car owned by rappers and soap opera stars 🙂
Hi Greg,
As for a 1:1 landrover in general, i will stick with my 1975 series III 109 SW and pass on the new defender . I am curious though how the 85 computers hold out over the years.
As for the new defender, i would not be surprised if the lego version will outlive the 1:1. We will know in about 10 years i guess ....
I will probably get the lego version. It seems like an interesting build and having an official lego piece with an official lego landrover logo on it is a big bonus :D
thx for the video :)
It’s a pretty rad looking set in terms of how much they’ve crammed in. I was watching the designer video and you can really see how packed in the mechanisms are.
And I like the new design. Think it’ll do well unless they’ve gotten something wrong in the mechanics - always the risk with lots of moving parts, motors and computers. Old one didn’t need any of that! Lol
I know nothing about cars or technic sets but what bothers me a bit is the color LEGO has used. I don't think it's a very good translation of the actual color. I'd have used the dark green instead to be honest but I guess it's too close to the mini then. Anyhow, interesting news and I'm looking forward to your video on how to motorize it ;-)
I agree that it's an odd green, but the dark would have been wrong too. It's a bold design that I like in both the real and LEGO version. Tempted to dip my toes into some LEGO Technic for this one. Be a good candidate review and motorization videos for sure if I do!
@@GJBricks yeah, you are right - none of the fit too well. I'll be looking forward to those videos then :-D
Will likely buy it. Build it. Have it collect dust. ha ha Love these models but never really bought to many motorized units. They seems to have underwhelming abilities at least when LEGO build them. The MOC'ers have built some pretty cool units that are speedier or have better climbing abilities.
Ha ha! A good looking dust magnet 😃
I think there’s more to it than you can see. It’s really packed in if you watch him building it. Will look forward to seeing more about it though!
Lol you better motorize it 😄i chalange you 150 is good
That means I have to buy it first... Challenge accepted!
