Yep, I was 17 when I bought it, saw them at L’Amour and the Beacon Theatre in NYC when they were touring for this album. Lemmy and Motörhead were complete douche bags for yanking the King offstage, as they knew it would not be easy to follow them, much like when Metallica opened for GnR, GnR knew they were in trouble.

If you're talking about Speed Metal, Progressive Metal or Doom/Death Metal, this album is essential. Mercyful Fate were at their peak on the record. Timi's bass playing is off the hook, the dual guitars are masterful, the drumming is top-notch and King's vocals are insanely good. Sadly, no one makes records like this anymore. Thankfully we have this masterpiece to enjoy for years to come.

Aside from everything else being tight af on this album, the engineering/mix is quite excellent for it's time

Yep. Those solo tradeoffs in the last minute or so are unparalleled imo. The solos in Judas Priest's Painkiller are a worthy contender.

To me this is the apex of Mercyful Fate but that's not to take away from their other albums. Each one has strengths in their own way and a supply of musical styles that, sadly, maybe are in their twilight of the metal genre. Each member of this epic band was at the top of musical proficiency when they recorded this Satanic masterpiece.
