It's just funny how in the original Half Life you do a few platforming across smaller islands before reaching the main island itself. Then in Black Mesa, you have to jump across chasms, power through an abandoned human base, traverse a space jungle and swim through a flooded cavern before finally making it to the first island. Crowbar Collective replaced that little insignificant platforming part with all that!
I will forever adore the original, but the Black Mesa creators showes such creativity, sense of detail and dedication that you can't help but love them. They really made Xen into its own game.
@@thesenate8268 Could you elaborate what puzzle we had to solve that many times in a row? I just replayed Xen the other day, and I never saw a puzzle that had to be done more than 3-4 times total. Which seems to be standard in the Half Life series.
Maybe it's the fact that in Half Life, you are in control 100% of the time. Cutscenes play in real time as you play and you're always looking through Gordon's POV. HUD is also very minimal, and there are never messages showing in the screen telling you what to do. I don't know any other game that does this and I would like to see more of it.
When i first played this as a 12 yr old, i can remeber seeing dead Human bodies laying around wearing the suit that Gordon wears exept they had a helmet. Can anyone explain this??
I love those healing water pools, their ambiance is soothing. I alwayz wondered how it's possible that the healing waters of Xen are singing. Maybe the healing particles emit this sound while decaying? Damn, I wish I could be around there for a while, I'd love to find out the secrets of Xen healing waterz.
@@carolbonnell6675 you shouldn't have to worry very much about this thing, i mean the long jump pack is given to you before a scientist is ordered to open a portal to Xen. it's basically forced to you before you travel to Xen. if you somehow manage to get to Xen without the long jump pack, then God save you.
I like this version of Xen better. Honestly such a welcome change to finally ditch the Black Mesa facility after like 10-12 hours and see something different. Xen isn't a real place, and that's exactly what I like about it. It feels very ethereal, trippy. The soundtrack is subtle, with a slight feel of unease and tension, like everything isn't quite there. It all has a very dream-like quality to it, and the dated 1998 graphics in a weird way help create that atmosphere. It reminds me of the Ocarina of Time dungeons every time I play the Xen levels, and I haven't played OoT in a decade and a half. The Black Mesa remake feels more like a Halo game, aesthetically speaking.
Which do you recommend for a first time playthrough? I loved HL2 on xbox and just got a gaming PC. I want to experience the first. I have nothing against older graphics BTW.
@@CutThroat_Kid I’d play the original. Both are good of course but black mesa changes a lot and is more of a reimagining than a remake really, I say play it after your done with half-life 1.
I think he's referring to the big ol bone pillars on Interloper, you have to go through the alien cave and break into meat/bone barrier on the vent like hallway which leads you to a bridged sewer like place with gas throwing spikes in it. There's gotta be some headcrabs and Bullsquids around, get past them and you'll see another boney barricade covering one of the bone pillars root. Break it and the pillar will slowly shrink into the size of a circle plate, stay on it if you wanna jump on the Manta Rays to enter the exit portal. If you mean the anus hole thingies, those are timed and can give you a high jump once you step inside one of them. I know this is like 3 years ago but I gotta write down all of it
Yo, idk if it’s me but I just can’t make the first jump. And it’s not because I’m slipping on the edges or anything but there is like a huge gap. And I’m doing everything right. The distance may be more with me. Is that possible?
You have to utilize the long-jump module. It's a bitch to use, I admit, and thankfully, you won't need to use it very often. You have to crouch first, and then quickly release the crouch-button and press the jump button + direction key. It should work.

Black Mesa did it so well. Made it feels like actual environment that these alien species could live.

I agree but final parts were unnecessary in my opinion, solving a puzzle 30 times in a row isn't fun.
