- While sabotaging the Vault, Alyx Vance comes across a Vortigaunt that was imprisoned by the Combine.
A brief excerpt from my playthrough. Loved this little exchange between Alyx and the Vort. Beautiful animation by Valve, top-notch voice acting for both characters, and a nice break from the claustrophobic corridors of the Headcrab hotel.

The vortigaunts have so much personality now, they really did an amazing job animating them and updating their models for source 2. They look as expressive as a human now.
First time seeing a vortigaunt smile was so weird but now I love it

I love the Vorts. My favorite one is still the Victory Mine Vort from HL2EP2. He was a badass and had great voicelines.

The movements are so realistic. The animators at valve definitely did a good job.

seeinga vort move in a true 3 dimentional space makes them so much more fucking frightening than the run in a straight line hl one vorts

Interestingly enough, back in the Half Life 2 Beta, the Vortigaunts were to have been used as living batteries by the Combine. Nice to see VALVe reviving an old concept.

Also, the devices were called Vorticells and I believe you were supposed to free them since they would have been powering gates etc. to prevent you from proceeding.
its a shame the only job the vortigaunt slaves have in half life 2 is to sweep the floors of city 17

In Eli's lab in hl2, you could see them powering the labs generators.

After Gordon freed the Vortigaunts from the Nihilanth's shackels, they owe humanity their lives quite literally. Gotta say the animations Valve did to every possible living entity there is in this game is absolutely ground-breaking. My favourite one gotta be the way the Strider moves when Alyx fights him.

In canon they probably did do that, which probably contributed to the HECU losing

First time in a Half-Life game I saw a vort being that nimble. No wonder they were able to take down the other substations, they must be deadly against the Combine when they aren't imprisoned.

i love how in episode 2 you had to do things like, give power to an elevator because a vortigaunt couldn't use a ladder, but in this they're like leathery magic monkeys

If I'm not mistaken, that Vorti couldn't use the ladder cause he was carrying Alyx.

Vortiguants are not like us, they are all connected each other. When you talk to one, actually you're talking all of them in the same time, when they sees you they sees the day you die and the day you born at the same time. I think they also can open portals between the dimensions to, because in the HL2 ep: 2 while they resurrecting the Alyx Vance, you can see her all blooded version of her too.

I like that they made the chest hand actually do something instead of it being just a still prop
I like how the chest arm acts kinda independently from the vort when it senses the vortessence

My lord, Vortigaunts are such powerful creatures
and yet, during the Black Mesa Incident, we've killing them by the dozens no problem.

This hit me so much harder than it had any right to. In a world full of scary aliens and multidimensional overlords, the vortigaunts have chosen to be sweet and thankful for their new human companions. You're our friend too Mr. Vortigaunt.

God bless Tony Todd. One of the best actors in horror, and one of the most iconic voices in gaming.
His vortigaunt voice is incredible. Also I didn't realize he was Candyman until now...that makes a LOT of sense, his voice is exceptional.

I like to think that when the Vort got halfway to the next station, he remembered all the other prisoner pods at the Northern Star (Likely also full of Vorts), and had to go all the way back and get them out, too.
I'd love to think that's what he did as well. I'd imagine an army of Vorts can be quite unstoppable.
Not to mention all others Vortigaunt pods scattered across the quarantine zone. No wonder Alyx met few Combine soldiers in the way to the Vault. They were too busy fighting against an army of Vortigaunts.

@@ladyselin35 I mean Freeman is both their jesus and also apparently part of the Vortessense due to killing the Nihilanth
They let Alyx get put in stasis to prevent the combine from getting intel of the Borealis. That's the only good reason, because if the combine finds and make use of the ship they will be able to get reinforcement from their own world and end the resistance with no effort.
@@thecommentguy9380 that's a hard topic to think about since it's uncertain at what point in time she was taken. Also it is certain that combine know about borealis from the footage where Judith Mossman's crew was under attack of combine. Maybe it was because at the moment vortigaunts weren't as powerful as they were during ep. 1 since majority of them were used as powersource that is capable of containing g-man and it drained them. While vortessence allows them to percieve all moments of time simultaneously, they hadn't enough power to save her at this particular moment. However it raises many other questions regarding her disappearance in the past and simultaneously in the future. Now we are at full circle, geez

I'll be honest, I've never seen the vortigaunts animated as lively as this in the series before, it's amazing.
The acrobatics of the Vortigaunt leaping up onto the wall and across to the higher catwalk made me immediately understand why they were the initial ground force in the Black Mesa incident. In combination with the Grunts it's no wonder how they managed to force the HECU to retreat.

I honestly love the Vortigaunt's insistence that he can save the others of his kind on his own. For how much the species has been used and abused across its history, it's fantastic to see that not only have we helped them as Gordon and Alyx, but that they're getting to a place where they can control their own destinies.
The vortigaunt's power is incredible. They have such an awesome power. I think they are so cool.

Half Life 2 Beta Content (The Vorti-Cells look it up, cause they keep the beta files of Half Life 2 as possible concepts to implement in later titles and franchises) is back in a way better way than it ever could have been imagined back a few years ago.

So vortigaunts probably knew about G-man inside the vault despite holding him off away in HL2Ep1, and the combine probably knew from another timeline how to hold off G-man as shown in HL:Alyx, somehow this is probably the only multiple universe/timelines story I'm actually excited about, as far as authorship and time went, no one seems to display something dumb/self-contradictory yet. Maybe even Combine learned from Cave Johnson about that 'taking ideas from another universes'
Personally, I don't think that there are other universes or timelines. Just a single one. G-Man use young-Alyx to save Eli then he took old-Alyx and put young-Alyx back in her time without memories of it. From there, events did go exactly as we know them.
@@eragonbromsson1122 Nah, there's definitely other universes and timelines; and they interact with each other. One timeline *literally* interacts with the other at the end of this very game.
Think about it: HL2 - HL2EP2 are the OG timeline, then the HL:A Timeline presents shall we say, a two way split. In one G-man accepted Alyx's first request (you can even see him split off from the one that stays behind), creating the OG timeline, and in the other G-Man accepts the second request, creating the new HL:Alyx timeline.
Multiple timelines exists.
vortigaunts always make me feel sad
They are too pure. I always feel sad too whenever I see them in trouble :(

This is actually for-shadowing the G-man's release from the Combine's prison. Also the Combine were using the Vortigaunts energy to contain the G-man, similar to how the Vortigaunts were able to block the G-man from Gordon Freemans reach.
Yeah, it was a neat bit of tying into the lore and also that moment in EP1 where they were holding G-man back

Friendly reminder: In HLA, the Vortigaunts strangely have three fingers on each hand (as opposed to two in previous games), and three-toed feet (unlike the previous hoof-like appearance).

I have to use the teleport movement because the regular movement with the joystick makes me so dizzy.
yeah, it made me sick the first month I got my VR headset. But after a while I got used it, now I can't play using teleport haha. Keep at it, maybe you'll get used to it too!
You won't get used to it if you keep using teleport. The teleport also ruins the immersion

@@SirKolass I'd say better mix and match, sometimes walk and sometimes teleport. I still have the tendency to get sick but I can play longer now than I used to be able back when I first started playing VR. It's good to have breaks too.

Why are they sending her to the G Man. It's one thing to release their kin, it's another thing for them to want the G Man free and Alyx in his briefcase. Combine vs G Man employers (Shu’ulathoi) vs Vortigaunts vs humans seems complicated, hopefully it plays better than Lost.
If Alyx didn't free the G-man Gordon will not came back I assume, so the real rebellion never starts and soon combines capture all of them.
@@whiterunguard3116 Makes sense to me, given that G-man puts Gordon in the right place so if he was trapped he would not have been able to kick start the events of hl2
My speculation: They know she will save Eli when G-man offer her the chance, and Eli is very important because he has intel of something the combine wants... The Borealis. With Alyx saving Eli, she just given the resistance more time.
