Half-Life: Alyx - Strider Battle

- Alyx Vance faces off against a Strider in the penultimate chapter of Half-Life: Alyx.
In a game with so many stellar moments, this one ranks as one of the best. The intensity of getting pinned down by pulse rounds, running from cover to cover, and seeing the beast towering over the player is just amazing. Russel's desperate cries of encouragement to Alyx as she guns down the synth is just icing on the cake.
I really should have left this comment ages ago, but there were a couple of things that I missed in this video or could have shown way better. I'd re-do this video entirely but at this point it has generated such a wealth of discussion around the Half-Life series that I think the best thing to do is leave this up. That being said, there are a couple of awesome scripted sequences in this battle that I show much more clearly in my updated full playthrough of this chapter, linked here: ruclips.net/video/8cI_vbQRJpw/видео.html
1) At 4:34, as the Strider backs up after using the Warp Cannon, if you peek out from cover, you can see several Combine soldiers mobilizing onto the destroyed building on the other side of the crater. A Combine Captain can be seen jumping the gap between two buildings, and one Combine Grunt slides down to the first floor of that building (shown at 36:39 in my full video of the chapter)
2) For a much better look at the Strider as it walks over Alyx at 5:09, go to 37:30 in my updated video
3) At 5:36, the Strider actually repositions itself before destroying the apartment wall (shown at 38:03 in my updated video)
4) FUN FACT: If Alyx takes too long to kill the Strider with the grenade launcher, it will kill her with the Warp Cannon ;)
I like how you showcase and act like you were there, Great impression!
@@bige007 Thanks! Definitely tried to go for that
On one hand, this Strider is a lot more elegant and destructive than the ones you blew up by the bushel in HL2. On the other hand, the new Strider's sound effects don't have the same impact they did in the original. The HL2's autocannon had a distinct thrum and heaviness that set you on edge every time you heard it, and their main cannon sounded like the world splitting open.
That's a great description - the warp cannon sounding like the world splitting open.
I can still hear the sound in my head
and you will never hear that sound again, its your age not the game ... also maybe the reverb tech witch i'm glad they did not include
I also very much liked how the synths in HL2 sounded alive in a way. The striders in Alyx sound too robotic
@@Thlormby I agree. A lot of this game sounds very Portal 2, which isn't a bad thing but it doesn't sound like anything Kelly Bailey would create :(
just gonna say this is some really clean gameplay, very cinematic. nicely done.
Thank you! I flubbed the reload at 2:07 though, not really proud of that haha.
A lot of uploaded videos have the player clearly not knowing what they're doing, and their heads are shaking all over the place, making it really hard to follow. I'm glad you found this clean and cinematic.

@Rodimus Prime i typed youre you fat nerd. learn to read.
@Rodimus Prime boi do i gotta spell it out for you. i wrote youre, you can scroll up and go see the comment right now. i swear im not lying.
@Rodimus Prime Could you shut up please?
5:11 Watch how the Strider looks around, checking several spots before actually looking down at Alyx, and changing position. Its movement here is absolutely amazing. The small details, bro.
Yeah, the way they animated the Strider was so satisfying to see. Definitely the most mobile-looking one from any Half-Life game.
@@Sexy_Nutella Oh btw, this is a month old i know, but I love the way you played this game. The way you acted like you were Alyx, stumbling when you jump, moving stuff with force as if you were actually struggling, reaching down for the ground as if you were crawling up the ramps. It's very pleasing to watch.
@@Resi1ience im glad you liked that :) i try to make the game as immersive as I can when I'm recording. Definitely tried to play as if I was Alyx herself
In HL2 the Strider's sharp movements and slow speed made them feel a lot like drones that were much more machine than organic. But this one really had a lot of intelligence that is both amazing to watch, but also even more terrifying than just a towering machine.
They animated the Strider the same way I would expect it to be in real life... These things are living entities that were controlled by the combines. Basically like K9 unit dogs... Its a small touch but helps us understand the way the Combine worked.
2:07 did you get that? The combine stumbles, and the catches himself. holy shit !?!?!
The animation for the Combine is great this time around. I believe they are all mocapped. Nice catch on the stumble!
Holy shit, never saw anything like that in the game. How detailed are the animations??
@@Sexy_Nutella Can be Euphoria ragdolls too, like GTA IV but updated
That was amazing
@@Ivan_Berni More like L4D ragdoll systems but updated. L4d ragdoll look really good at that time.
how could you look at this and not think it's the coolest shit ever
This game was very much worth the 13 year wait.
@@Sexy_Nutella for the groundbreaking new features presented, the innovative gameplay, and that phenomenal ending, yeah. I completely agree
@@dgbeck well, it doesn't have much groundbreaking new features, but the gameplay, animations, and story are phenomenal.
@@Sexy_Nutella Best thing is that the aftercredits tells us Valve are not yet over with this franchise... What a time to be alive
Because it’s a strider.
I could hear HL2 strider screams when it died.
Yes, there was a "mix" of a few original sounds of HL2 when it died.
Yeah, I definitely heard the original mournful death wail right before it fell
It was like wouuu errere
you can actually hear HL2 sounds every time it gets hurt
I'm kind of disappointed that they seemingly left out a lot of classic and recognizable HL sounds for something that sounds a lot more generic. Too much mixing, i dunno.
I love how they incorporate old Half Life 2 sound effects into the game, and it still works which makes it great
HL2 sound effects are forever engrained in my head, a testament to how well they were designed.
When a game from 13 years or more ago still has fitting sound design, you know it’s good.
A lot of those sounds you heard that were imported from HL2 were also imported from HL1
Valve is always ahead of the game in sound design
@@Sexy_Nutella my thoughts exactly.
I like how at 5:10 the strider takes a second to look around, then looks surprised when you're under it.
And I also like how he recreated that Strider scene from the trailer
Its actually funny.

The graceful and agile movements of this Strider are kinda terrifying compared to the bumbling and clumsy movements of the HL2 Striders
Agreed. It's a pretty resourceful Strider for sure, using its legs to break walls.
I wouldn't call ramming your head into a wall "graceful", i though it more terrifying in half Life 2 how they blew apart any cover you got with theri larger cannon.
@@MrZeromaster95 That I agree with you on
@@MrZeromaster95 I guess he was damaged by the debris. In 4:35 the crack on his shell glowed and he burnt shortly. His cooldown systen could be damaged, forcing him into other means.
Or the devs wanted to make a strider more ressourcefull
His armament is joke. On E3 demonstration he burnt the car and destroyed concrete steel pillar by pulse canon.
The soundtrack is so damn good, Jesus.
Mike Morasky did a good job!

not as much as the hl2 sot
I'm only a recent fan of Half Life, and got into it after the announcement of Alyx, seeing the Strider this fluid and this fast just reminds me that these guys aren't machines, they're biomechanical aliens. Comparing this to how the Striders in Half Life 2 moved, this is a massive improvement, I love it!
Thank you so much for this video, I can actually analyze how this thing moves and behaves.
Hey, welcome fellow Half-Life fan! Glad you enjoyed the video, and happy that you're enjoying these games as well.
Play Black Mesa Source ASAP
One thing about being a Half Life fan is that you're constantly dreaming of Valve making Half Life 3 some day...15 years and counting, it will happen soon!!!🤩
They aren't biomechanical, there's no evidence for this in game, and they were never said to be biomechanical. They're called SYNTHS for a reason.
@@cringechannelwhichshouldbe873 Dude, the devs never referred to them as organic, they were even going to call them "Mech" before they came up with "Synth"
They also called them self replicating robots that evolve
Playing this in VR is seriously something else. Such an intense scene and perfectly paced. Valve truly made a masterpiece with this game
Totally. I was actually gritting my teeth when the Strider was firing at me, I really loved how they made your cover crumble away as well, adds a lot to the intensity and forces the player to keep moving.
@@Sexy_Nutella When I was playing I had NO ammo.
In the car park part I only had 2 grenades
By VR standards definitely.
5:54 That looked so dang realistic
Are you talking about the "stumble" I tried to imitate when I was going down the ramp? That took some time to make it look like that but I'm glad you thought it was realistic!
I love how this guy perfectly reacts to the heights as if he was really in that situation.
Haha, to be honest it's something I do even if not recording. Feels weird for me as a VR player not to brace myself when landing
7:18
"Who's a good cannon? Who's a good cannon, yes you aaare!"
the way that the hands snap onto surfaces makes it very fun to just rub them against objects and surfaces
I had died a few times at this point and got a little frustrated so I stood up, grab the launcher and went full auto. If you do it again, try it. It's such a feeling firing it that quickly
2:09 the way combine trooper reacts to gunshot there, just wow
He just fell
@@SirKolass The animation wasnt just him falling, it was him getting back up too. it looked hella good.
@@yeth797 The fall wasn't an animation, it was just physics
@@SirKolass It wasnt completely physics, literally got shot and fell off the car, and got up in a pretty cool way.
@@SirKolass It was a mix of physics and animations. Most likely they have some sort of trigger or node at that car that tells the ordinal what kind of animation and what physics state he should be in when he falls off the car after getting hit by a non-fatal shot.
So, is nobody gonna talk about the strider saying "I see you" at 2:08?
You mean 2:09?
He said: "we see"
@Tristanbul U yeah, a little hard to hear it
0:50 I love this part. Just shows you the scale of the Strider. Also when playing in VR, it reminds me of the scene from Jurassic Park when the kids are looking out the window at the T-REX.
That's an excellent comparison! I loved how they designed it so that the Strider rose in tandem with the elevator. Like you said it really hammers home how tall it is.
I knew these Striders were huge but *damn* are they a completely new beast in this game.
I think this is do to VR real person scale. Headcrabs are also huge if you comper them to HL2 model
im pretty sure theyre like 50 feet tall in half life 2, like 2x taller than a gargantua.
can the literal senator armstrong even handle those
I’m getting real Portal 2 vibes with the Strider ripping into the building like Wheatley
Makes sense because the composer compose Portal 2.
When the strider activated... I felt that

In VR it's even crazier!
Do you think Eli tried to stop alyx getting in because he knew that the gman is there and also knew what will happen
Definitely, or at the very least he knew it wasn't Freeman inside the vault.
@Fargo They think it's Gordon because Alyx overhears a conversation between an unkown scientist (most likely Mossman, though others think it could be one of HL Decay protagonists, Colette Green) about a survivor of the Black Mesa incident, that raised hell and then vanished (just like Gordon). We don't really know how Eli (possibly) realized it was Gman right before Alyx went in though.
@@EatThePath-7 what if it was Adrian
@@EatThePath-7 maybe he found out due to discovering more info about the vault itself, then he remembered the impact Gman had on black mesa. After all, Gman has had interactions in the facility before, even directly to Eli himself. He did bring the Xen crystal that started it all..
I love Half Life Alyx don't get me wrong, but I seriously miss the old Strider sounds, they were so much more unique. I don't know why they changed them :l
Half Alyx happens 5 years before HL2, maybe the striders received updates.
Same! Same thing w. the headcrabs.
It's just sounds guys, relax
you can actually hear half life 2 sounds every time the strider gets hurt and especially when it dies
randomguy6679 no, sound design is pretty fucking important.
I miss the strider sound effects from hl2. So much scarier and impactful.
I do miss the HL2 warp cannon sound. It was so terrifying.
theansweris421 you can actually hear half life 2 strider sounds when it gets hurt and when it dies
3:17 what just happened to that combine soldier? did he blow himself up with that grenade?
I guess the player shot the grenade and it ignited
Yeah, I'm pretty sure one of my chest shots with the SMG ignited it. The explosion might have been due to my shotgun, but it might also have been due to the timer running out from the first shot.
Oh men they changed the strider warp cannon :( in hlf2 was perfect
Yeah, it was such a frightening sound to hear them charge up the cannon.
That strider was damaged. Notice that a huge ball of dark energy was created here. Maybe its cannon was malfunctioning and created some sort of small singularity? You can see that it even set the strider ablaze for a moment

Can someone tell me how good Half-Life Alyx is? I'm getting really close to convincing myself to buy a Valve Index VR. The only thing holding me back is; will there be more games as good to play in the future?
Honestly, Half-Life: Alyx is immensely good, and the quality is what you'd expect from a Valve title. I would rank it on par with HL1 or HL2, it's that good. Now, in terms of spending $1000 on it, I'm not as sure because I played this on a $300 Samsung Odyssey+. I have heard that the Index is basically the top of the line headset though, so I'm sure you'll have even more fun using that one.
There are other VR Games that are fun, I played through Superhot and Gorn, both good games. However, I will say that Half-Life: Alyx is the first AAA title that fully embraces the VR platform to make a kickass single player game. VR is an expanding market, and I'm fairly certain that Valve will continue to make games for VR, maybe even the next Half-Life installment.
@@Sexy_Nutella I played Alyx "the cheap way" with a WMR headset HP VR1000 that i purchased for 199€ and oh boy this was incredible. You do not need a Valve Index to enjoy this wonderful game
I bought an index (actually also built an entire machine) just to play Alyx and it was totally worth it. Like nothing I've experienced before in gaming
@@jcolvin2 I don't think wasting so much money to play 1 game is worth it.
I played Alyx on my oculus quest by streaming my computer screen to my Quest using virtual desktop and my god it was one of the best experiences I have ever had with gaming. Seriously you do not need a high end headset to experience this masterpiece
Yeah, I agree with the comments here when I say the Strider sounded much better in HL2, and I don’t know why the devs just couldn’t remake the sounds and put a fresh sounding spin on them, but I have to say, the Strider LOOKS awesome, that damaged scarred carapace just adds to the menace, like it’s a deformed damaged monster after you, love it. Musics great too.
Yeah, I REALLY miss the warp cannon sound.
I do not have vr but if I did I would be so terrified to fight this thing lol. Ever since I was young girl playing in my dads steam I was too scared to fight striders I would just hide lol. Now not so much but in vr? Oof the fear will be back lol
Yeah definitely a lot scarier in VR. Its because in VR everything feels so realistic and you sometimes forget that you are playing a game. Everything has depth to it and looks truly 3D.
7:18 "WHOS A GOOD BOI?!"

6:16 that weaponized ver of prisoner car made me see how big and scary cp's unit actually is rather than see them only as normal police units.
LOL no they're incompetent pricks, the cannon was probably just cargo they were carrying
The strider literally crouched at 6:31 like a Minecraft character you can notice sorta
I finished the whole game without knowing that you could put grenades on the Combine Rifle.
You need a specific upgrade for that
Also, it's the Shotgun that can take grenades, not the SMG.
It's also not a rifle. This comment is a trainwreck.
I always wondered why a destroyed wall, or even a metal sheet can resist energy bullets of an alien weapon?
Because videogames

I don’t think this is scripted, so yes this is very realistic
It probably is, but I'm not sure, because we don't have those kinds of ragdoll in this game, I think valve just spent more time in this specific soldier(they show its A.I in the locomotion video on Valve RUclips channel).
@@aquelecientista4491Wait, this combine is ragdoll in this animation?
One thing I noticed is that you can hear car alarms in the background when moving through the parking garage, meaning some cars are still functional in some way even fifteen years after the seven hour war.

Now that’s build quality
2:42 that's some star wars shit right there.
gordon be like ok
Haha right? Guy takes down striders for breakfast
It makes me question even more if it's mechanical or biological
Its both, as with almost every Combine creation.
Yep, I believe the synths (Striders, gunships, etc) were all species conquered by the Combine and integrated with their tech to serve as their war machines
The gunships and and dropships probably were sea creatures judging by thier looks and striders were somewhat giant hairy bugs since you can see some hair coming from thier knees and thier isect-ish legs and skeletal design
And i am sure as hell they're bio-mechanical since striders possess a brain as you can see in episode 2 when dog tears the strider apart
Night Wolf
Yeah, for sure. There’s definitely a synth combination of mechanical and bio living creatures. It makes them so fascinating.
Someone, somewhere, once put forth that Hunters were the Combine adaptation of the Houndeye from Half-Life/Black Mesa. I personally think that’s a bit of a stretch but very interesting nonetheless.
The combine are the most fascinating antagonist faction I’ve ever come across in any story, game, movie, or otherwise. They have very specific design and operational elements that I’m afraid a lot of people misunderstand or would butcher if given the chance. That’s why I’m a little pensive about any potential Half Life related movies. I was hoping to see the 7 hour war and the transfer and evolution of the trans human arm of the combine over watch in Half-Life Alyx, but we didn’t get too much. There’s a great potential for a 7 hour war game but I only trust Valve to do it. I really felt I could feel Marc Laidlaw’s absence on the writing staff in HL:A. It’s a real shame he has no interest in coming back. It’s a great game nonetheless to explore and expose ourselves to our favorite villains! :)
@@nateweter4012
Yeah, I believe what made the Combine so unique was Laidlaw's creativity. I hope he comes back, I dunno how but I really hope it happens.

You can hear the joy in russel and alyx's voice when they kill the strider, i find it adorable.
Yeah. Russel is such a good companion in this game and he's hardly there in person.
At 2:09 the strider said "see you"
I've never seen such an animation like 1:42 before.
It's seriously impressive. The way the wall crumbled looked so natural.
God, the part where you hide directly under the strider as it walks past and then looks down is fucking scary
It's HUGE in VR as well.
Playing this was so intense.
4:25 I know for most of people it will be an insignificat thing, but I wish they had kept the original Strider Charge Attack sound effect. It was so impacting, so "oh god, we are dead now"

The Strider is probably my favorite Half-Life creature.
fighting them is so intense! their repositioning being so accurate, the way they always seem to sneak up on you in the middle of the battle, their sounds, reactions, oh my god its such a well design creature

Definitely my favourite moment.
I honestly did not expect to fight a Strider. And then to think how hard it was for Alyx to take one out, while gordon eats them for breakfast.
5:16 So...why doesn't it just step on her?
Probably just a bit awkward for it to step on it from that angle, or perhaps it's anticipating that Alyx would move out of the way so it just repositioned to fire at her instead
I like the old strider sounds better.
They are kinda "retro" sounds at this point. They wouldn't really fit HL:A's atmosphere at all
I do miss the OG sounds, but the new ones are pretty good too. What I really wish they brought back was the signature Dropship WOOPWOOP sound :(
I suppose you could make the excuse that this one had its vocoder or whatever damaged, hence the different noises. I mean, we do see it buried under a ton of rubble, with what looks a giant crack in its head. Bit of a stretch, but it sort of works.
Wish I could say the same about the gun sounds, though. And the dropships. I got nothing for those.
@@BeastlyAbWorkout We can make up any lore excuses we want, but we all know the sound changes are official stuff, if they don't listen to the critics we'll have them again in the next game

The thing I find the most weird in this sequence is the fact that cars still have working alarms. You'd think after 15-ish years of abandonment their batteries would die by this point. Instead this feels like the 7 Hours War was a couple of months ago.
Haha, I never thought of that!

We need the HMS Thunderchild for this one.
Nah we just need tom cruise
Indeed.
One thing I hate and love about half life is they don’t give much lore on the creatures, only little fragments. You could tell that strider was already damaged because alyx dropped a vault on it and that it was extremely desperate to kill alyx to the point it used its body to smash through houses with its head and fired the warp cannon so close to a wall it caught itself on fire.
Yeah, the strider is such an interesting creature. I loved how all the Synths in the game have animal-like vocalizations, it makes them memorable and different from just a generic "boss" type creature you need to kill.
I can see why the Combine loves Striders so much.
Yeah, you can really tell that their mobility gave them an edge over traditional human vehicles used for warfare
The way the music builds as you get to, and into, and raise within the elevator, is wonderful.
I'm a big fan of how the initial score as you escape the Strider the first time fades away to an uneasy tune, then explodes again as the Strider bursts through the wall, culminating in the badass track that starts when you fight the Combine in the garage.

I love how at 2:55 when he kills the suppressor, he just stands there and falls over slowly shortly after the player looks over. Its so funny!
It's also slightly haunting that he collapses that slowly - like one of the Colossi in Shadow of the Colossus for me personally
Such an awesome scene/fight, I enjoyed this! The music, the atmosphere, the energy gave me goosebumps. Also nightmares!
Glad you enjoyed it!
2:33 I wouldn’t be surprised if this part was inspired by the garage battle in F.E.A.R, the layout is very similar. The combine charger even looks like the replica heavy armor.
Agreed. Gave me massive vibes of that game as well
i like your username
Haha thanks!!
Should have added the cannon in half life 2 and gordon makes it looks easy.
Who wouldn't want those gloves?!
did you finished the game?
I just did :)

This battle is so sick. Easily my favorite part of this game from watching it.
Yeah, I was expecting to fight a Strider from the trailer, and it was definitely a worthy final boss for the game.
Dunno why they took such a departure from Half-Life 2's sound design.
