    The beginning of Black Mesa's Interloper chapter is another impressive showcase of how the game takes the building blocks and key concepts established in Half-Life 1 and invigorates them. The Vortigaunt Village is a key example of this - the location, as well as the many scripted sequences within it, "humanizes" the Vorts and provides another layer of story complexity to the game - these aren't aliens hellbent on world domination - they are but slaves to the Nihilanth, forced to do its bidding on whim. There is also a large amount of connective tissue to Half-Life 2, stuff that long-time fans will eat right up - the cooking of the headcrab, the coughing Vort, the sketches on the walls, the Vortigese and flux shifting. While the fact that they were slaves to a higher power is revealed in HL2, having Gordon witness their autonomy being stripped away firsthand once the Controllers teleport in is a very creative way to show (not tell) players this.
    The Gargantua chase that follows is also a good sequence, though I have to admit that it was borderline silly for me, given the fact that all of these Gargs were just chilling in their nests until Freeman came along (perhaps there is a lore reason for this?). That being said, it is a great send-off for the Gargantua as an enemy itself, as each encounter with the beast has steadily escalated since its introduction in Power Up. As well, it is inherently an exciting chase given that by this point, players know that they can't kill it with conventional firearms and the only way to survive is to RUN.
    Finally, I just wanted to touch on the atmosphere. In Gonarch's Lair, I had mentioned that the change in things such as the lighting, ambience and skybox from the first Xen chapter to the second, and now to Interloper, really helps sell the idea that Gordon is descending into the "belly of the beast" (he literally enters the Tower, which is highly implied to be an organism itself). The smog that clouds the Tower now blots out most of the sky, distant storms fill the soundscape, and the Tower itself looms over the player by the end of the second map. One great touch that Black Mesa instilled into the game is the sense of journey that is conveyed through its atmosphere and environments. The Tower is very reminiscent of the Citadel in HL2, which drew closer and closer as Freeman fought through City 17. Similarly, the sense of reward and accomplishment once Freeman finally gets to the Tower, after all the obstacles he went through, both in the Earthbound chapters and Xen, is unpalpable.

      I really like how many aspects of Xen in Black Mesa are inspired in HL2. Some people might think it's lack of creativity but i think it's cool.
      I played Black Mesa before playing HL2 (i'm relatively new to the hl fandom and the full version of BM was already out) and when i played it i immediately noticed some similarities, like for example the Xen puzzle and the reactor puzzle from ep1, or the Antlion Guardian cave from ep2 and the Gonarch chase... etc
      What I don't like is that they removed the Manta Ray section :(

      When I saw that message "Freeman press on, science team" I really felt bad for them. Most likely, they still have hope that they can survive the incident and after closing the portal, the aliens would be gone from Earth. Unfortunately for them, G-Man will activate an atomic bomb soon and all people we met in Black Mesa will die. Many of them will have lonely death. Some of them are thinking about their families and whether their loved ones were able to be evacuated to safe locations. And yet, despite all the efforts of the scientist their will be no such thing as "safe location", since after the end of one invasion, a new one way worse will become...

    8:12 This is the moment it clicks for Freeman. The hierarchy of the alien races in Xen, and the kinship of the Vortigaunts as another race being beaten down by a mysterious oppressive force. This is the first time in the game that Freeman realises he's fighting for more than just the human race. And he stomps - deftly evading the mind-controlled Vorts' attacks while obliterating their oppressors with pinpoint accuracy. No wonder the Vorts hail him as a messiah in HL2, he's probably the first person to show them sympathy and a shared sense of purpose in years.

      True. I love how the Vorts in HL2 also recognized that Freeman also killed a ton of their kind, but did so out of necessity and survival. They are such an interesting race due to their maturity and ability to take things in stride.

    A lot of the enemies in Black Mesa can be pretty sympathetic (the Vorts, the HECU, the Gonarch, etc.) On the other hand, the devs did an outstanding job at showing how cruel and ruthless the Controllers are. The first thing we see them doing in Xen is killing a Vort (probably the same one who helped Gordon into the village) without even seeming to notice, just because they were trying to slow Gordon down and the Vort happened to be in the way. Then they bring the others in the village under their control just to use them as distractions and cannon fodder. It really shows just how worthless the Vorts are to them - only good for slave labor or to take a bullet. It also extends to the Nihilanth himself - even if he doesn't outright order the Controllers to treat the Vorts this way, then he definitely doesn't take any issue with it.
    I really like the opening of Interloper and its contrast with the previous chapters. Everything about the first Xen chapter was gorgeous - the skies, the floating islands, the glowing jungles, even the dangerous wildlife - it felt almost like an alien paradise. Gonarch's Lair was harsher, barren, without much life aside from the Gonarch and Headcrabs. And finally Interloper is flat-out hellish, with the red skies, jagged rocks, clouds of smoke, and fleshy walls of the tower (not to mention a couple of shout-outs to Doom 2016). I actually sort of miss the "xog" from the early versions. I think it added to the fire and brimstone-like atmosphere of the chapter. I'm not tech savvy enough to do any serious modding, otherwise I'd probably make a mod to add it back in lol.
    Anyway, as always your playthroughs are great and it's awesome how you time the Garg chase to sync up with the music. Good luck with the next video!

    • @Sexy_Nutella
      @Sexy_Nutella  3 года назад +12

      Thanks man! Yeah, one thing I forgot to comment on was how much of a Doom 2016 vibe I got from this chapter haha. I'm actually a fan of the reduced xog, in my opinion it made the maps feel too "oversaturated", plus it was much harder to see the tower itself hehe.

      @Fulscript 2 года назад

      eh, I find the HECU pretty much shitty. Murdering a few hundred unarmed and defensless people overnight. The fact they were also attacked by the Xen doesn't make them sympathetic to me. Also I think Opposing Forces tried to show them more humanely by having you not kill every scientist and even the NPC Hecu are shown just being "mean" against one scientist at most.

By the way, about your comment on the garg chase, I like to think that the Gargantuas are patrolling that specific area (or at least they work like a security turret which activates if it locates an intruder); also I think the whole chase reinforces the idea of being an Interloper on a very hostile and unknown territory, and the fact that everything to come is going to be as dangerous as the garg chase or even worse.

    At the end of the gargathon those steps hears like how Gordon's heartbeats would be after thar run... His heart rate must be as high as it can be... And another thing that I also noticed in my perspective, was that vortigaunt behaviour after you just killed those Alien Grunts. They looked like if they were afraid of you, they thought they would be the next, that you would kill them after taking down the Alien grunts. But in that exact moment when you realized they were just slaves and you kinda must free them and not kill them, the vorts also realized you are the one who will free them, that's why they trusted you instantly when you crossed the elevator and given you the permission to enter the village to pick up that teleporter, and that's also why they would even sabotage temporarily for you the alert system inside the factory in the future video 17b.

      Good observation on the Vorts, I wish their "revolt" against the Nihilanth was more pronounced than what we got by the end of Interloper, but like you said I do appreciate how we participated in their liberation in this game compared to HL1.

      @@Sexy_Nutella The Main problem for them to rebel is those controllers, if they do anything away from their duties as slaves, the controllers Will inmediately notice that and then just appear... Something to add, is that the Nihilanth as the controllers have a vortessence Bond with Vortigaunts thanks to those collars and cuffs, without to mention that resemblement the Nihilanth and controllers have with the Vortigaunts with that prosthetic third arm. Those things work like a chain where both lives are connected, as said by the singing Vortigaunt in HL2. So with that they couldn't rebel without getting that mind game. That's what that Vortigaunt meant with cutting the cord between the life of Nihilanth and the Vortigaunts'.

      @@Sexy_Nutella Well... They sure did Even we didn't see them... They watched Freeman in the Nihilanth chamber during that whole combat... But I highly agree with You, there were left some final encouragement words and actions from The vorts to Freeman to make him realize their future Bond in the upcoming events... In that way we would be more motivated, because now we would be working not only for our planet, but for their specie. And despite charging with such responsibility is quite a very unnerving and terrifying feeling, counting with the almost omnisapient individuals live and personal faith and trust would be something to take as a large self-confidence Boost... Not sure this was intentional by the devs or not, it just occurred to me that the level progression (and respective atmospheric tone) of each Xen chapter work their ways down the color spectrum. For instance, the first area when you teleport in is a brilliant Blue-Violet. With each area the color moves to green, orange, and red towards the end. It makes me wonder if the tower portal is acting like a black hole of sorts and increasingly bending the light as you draw nearer. As an aside it provides a perfect pace for Gordon's descent into the next chapter, also like the pacing of the difficulty. Reminds me of the old-school expansions, resetting the difficulty just on a steeper curve with the new campaigns.
    As always, stellar playthrough Nutella, hope that Vortigaunt gets to enjoy those chips!

    • @Sexy_Nutella
      @Sexy_Nutella  3 года назад +1

      I believe that was intentional, it does feel like a slow descent into hell as Gordon nears the Tower, and is quite fitting given the context and escalating combat encounters and stakes, whereas the first Xen maps started off with a blue/purple tint that really sold the beauty of the borderworld. Thanks for the comment :)

    • @chonkemp7091
      @chonkemp7091 3 года назад +4

      This was intentional! We wanted to create a sense of environmental progression and escalating danger (along the colour spectrum) as you got nearer the tower. The intent was that the red portal served as a sort of "local sun", which serves as an explanation for why things get redder as you get closer to the tower. Thus, things start out serene and beautiful and get more and more dire as you get closer to the tower.

    My favorite interaction with the vorts has got to be 5:17 , I love how they actually have this clear sense of confusion to them, these ones have never met freeman, unlike the xen forces on earth, they have no idea who or even _what_ he is, and each vort has a different reaction, the first one is annoyed and seems to just assume its another cronie the nihilith has claimed and just wants to get on with his day, whereas the second one who opens the door is curious and confused, really helps sell the idea that these guys have always been friendly.
    Hell it would be likely that if they weren't enslaved but the resonance cascade still happened, they would've been confused but not actively trying to kill everyone, really the only concern would be the wildlife pouring through and the military being a bunch of idiots.
