- Half Life Chapter 17 is called Interloper. In Interloper, Half Life players must traverse the alien world of Xen. Interloper is the seventeenth chapter of Half Life, and players are no longer inside of Black Mesa. Instead, Interloper takes place on Xen.

I spawn into interloper and spend 10 minutes thinking the mouth cannons in the spawn area are my answer off the bat and then I find this video and learn there is some obscure cave in the other side of the map, nice.
Yeah, same. That really wasn't very clear.
You can also use the long-jump module to get on a ride of one of those Alien Aircrafts, from the top of the hill. Works perfectly.
@@TheLambdaTeam But it's not possible to jump from that one to the portal.

Playing this game on hard mode is making sure you're absolutely sick of the game by this point.
That’s what easy felt like to me
I'm replaying the game on hard after some 8 years and it's just boring. Not boring AND tedious like Black Mesa, just boring. The only difference from playing on normal is there's less health/suit charge pickups in the levels, and the amounts of each you get per station are fucking shit because you lose what you get in the split second you run into a handful of headcrabs. or a bunch of alien grunts whose attacks are absolutely retarrded and will cross the mexican border to hit you. Other than that fighting the HECU is a breeze and the only real "challenge" comes from not killing yourself with fall damage.
@@Vectivus. Managed to finish the game, but after dying twice to this thing And having no idea If i was doing the thing™️ I was supposed to, i searched for a walkthrough.
I actually just finished doing that. Believe it or not, I found this to be one of the easier levels on Hard. But I was still fucking sick of it by the time I was done. I just ran past all the enemies in the area with the spinning elevators. Seriously, fuck the spinning elevators.
@@papayer I just finished playing the game on hard, and yeah, it was boring. Recharge health, kill an enemy while taking some damage, go recharge health, kill an enemy while taking some damage, rinse and repeat until they're all dead and I move on to the next set-piece. It was a chore.
this level is the reason i have schizophrenia, anger issues, trust issues, alzheimer's disease, parkinson's, tourettes and ptsd

The Black Mesa developers better not forget the creepy ghostly voices coming out of the last portal. One of most chilling things I ever heard in a game.
"Not you alone. Not you alone".
"The last. I am the last".
ruclips.net/video/pnhjY4bJynw/видео.html
They did. And added a little extra. Don't watch if you still haven't finished Black Mesa.
ruclips.net/video/GTJsDsDunEU/видео.html
I came here to listen to this exact thing, because I just played through HL1 on Steam and the sound mixing is way worse than I remember the original being so I could barely hear the voices.
But I can definitely make out "Gordon! Someone get him out!"
...so like, what does that mean? That they miscalculated and killing the Nihilanth would be a bad thing?
How is Gordon even hearing those voices from Xem, near a protal that teleports within Xen? Maybe everything after Gordon blacked out after the intial accident was a dream, and Gordon was in a coma the whole time, and the voices are just him hearing people in the real world creeping into his subconcious?
I mean, it all being a dream would explain how a physist could (pretty much) singlehandedly defeat an entire army of aliens, plus US marine and black ops forces equppied with several attack helicopters and tanks...
Black Mesa did such a good job with making these levels
Uhhh
carsoncarsoncarson hahah they 100% did, dont bs dude
Interloper is terrible in BM. I actually preffer the original xen just because of how bad that chapter is in BM. EXTREMELY long, repetitive, ugly, unbalanced. A total mess. Rest of Xen is nice tho
I personally enjoyed Interloper in BM, but I also see what you mean by long and repetitive, I get that they tried to extend it but it does get a little annoying after a while.
@@lowpolyfruit they literally have you making the same puzzles five times in a row

Better kill them while they're passive because once the Controllers show up they all attack lol

@@ricksaburai but not the ones you left behind. Just the ones at the end which you have to kill anyway. The ones on interloper never attack

I hope that when I'm finished with HL1, that HL2 level design doesn't suck.
2 is much smoother
were you fuckers born yesterday?
HL1 is like working at a steel factory, doing unpaid overtime and having 6hrs of sleep or less once you get home
HL2 is like laying underneath a coconut tree on the carribean beach, sipping on a drink
however in Hl2 there was a particular moment where I had issues, I think in Citadel where I had to hold against hordes of combine units and I had few sentry guns to my disposal
Im almost finishing half life and when i get my graphic card ill play half life 2
edit 3 days later: i finished the game like 10 minutes after i made that comment, its an amazing experience, by far its the best game i've ever played
what century are you in lmao
Its It's good game not the best I've played thought probably like a top 20 for me
Graphics card? Even laptop can play hl2
I accidently skipped this entire chapter by accident because I thought you were meant to ride on top of one of the blue stingrays to the portal from the start, theirs a hill that lets you jump onto one
I did that too, though y'must be careful as it will disappear and you fall into your doom.
Thank you for making a much quicker and more to-the-point guide of this section of the game. I was having trouble with the last section with that series of Alien Controllers and Vortigaunts guarding the lifts to the last teleporter. BigMacDavis did an excellent walk-through, however, I feel like his gameplay was a bit too slow, and his explanation a bit too thorough. With no commentary, however, you managed to make a simple to understand and follow guide that didn't require killing all enemies. Thank you, good sir.
Black Mesa Interloper: Saving Vortigaunts from controllers, killing the alien grunts that bully them
Half Life 1 Interloper: 0:03
Xen is so mystical and awesome to be in. I was afraid it would be short but this chapter proved it otherwise.
My best friend said: "It's a place of dreams and nightmares, where they merge."
The level design is actually so, so fucking bad. Didn't even bother giving the player some sense of direction for where to go or even what to do. At the starting section, you're led to believe that you're meant to jump down those holes to boost you all the way up to reach that far away island. But no. If you do that, the fall damage will kill you. Try to ride a near platform and do a long jump all the way there, game will kill you. Try to kill the vortigaunts? they'll never stop spawning.
What you have to do is find a tiny, concealed crevice, then ride a fucking... _alien pole..._ all the way up, then lose 10 HP per jump to the awkward platforming... then fall on top of a boid... that flies you there... ?
Just who the fuck designed this?
Same dude i been trying for like half an hour to get to the top climbing that shitty rocks but when i watch the walktrhoufh he goes behind a cave in 8 seconds??? Like how i was supposed to know there was a cave
I heard in original HL1, Xen was a last minute rushed idea.
Welcome to a dimension where no human has went before. Seriously, what did you expect? Have a big glittering sign on every asteroid isle that says "THIS WAY FREEMAN"? The Xen levels are the very best IMHO, they actually managed to build up a world and an ecosystem which is truly alien to our Earth-bound species.
The Vortigaunts do stop spawning, you'll only need to kill about six.
But I do agree with you that they should have removed the fall damage on Xen, since there's hardly any gravity. The only mistake about Xen was the fall damage, it should have been eliminated.
@@TheLambdaTeam It being an alien world is cool and all but that doesn't excuse the fact the player still has to traverse it and it's terrible.
@@papayer On the other hand, taking you straight to the boss would be extremely cheap and boring. Obviously, Nihilanth has no interest in fighting Freeman or destroying Earth at all. If he wanted to do this, he'd already done that. Of course it makes more sense storywise, if Freeman would seek out Nihilanth instead.
Also don't forget that the Xen "civilization" utilizes teleportation as an everyday method of transportation. It's like we humans sit in our car and drive to the grocery store. Therefore, the placing of these teleports are completely logical from a Xen denizen's perspective. They'd probably find _our_ methods of transportation inconceivable.
I was kinda dissapointed to learn that the inteded way to kill the garguantua wasn't to coax it over to the tentacle, but to instead just use the Xen trees.
I just blasted the everlasting fuck out of it with the missile launcher.
You were supposed to kill the Gargantua?
@@mynamedoesntfi--6161 It's not compulsory but I'd do it regardless, just for the lulz.
What the hell?? I always shot explosives at it in spots he couldn't access - I love how this game basically gives you so many choices.
I first killed him by spamming explosives
Second playthrough, I went through the stealth route and wasn't fulfilled because of the lack of supplies so I went back and brute forced it
I killed the gargantua again by luring it into the trees, then throwing satchel charges and grenades at it. I was unfulfilled again because I lost so many explosives, so I reloaded it and killed it a third time by letting it run around in circles in the xen trees and throwing a grenade at it.
is it a hot take to say i enjoyed on a rail more than this chapter
no, it isnt. Im playing it now and its a pain in the ass. I have now just started using noclip to get throiugh the level because its just tedious and boring at that point. At least on a rail was calming and challenging. this,.... this is just bullshit.
The zen chapters aren’t that fun
Yeah really fucking annoying
I just want to finish zen and start hl2, because zen is boring for me
xen
1:25 That fall damage was insane when you reach that part with low HP, I remember had passed a pain in the a*s in that part and couldnt recharge the game in another point without losing my progress because of the autosaving. Thanks that in Black mesa they fixed that problem with the air propulsive
What about the broken tunnel in Blast Pit? I had to go back to a much older save and save me lots of health just to tank that fall.
I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to jump. That's what I did and I didn't lose any health.
bro your not suppose to jump
See at 7:55 The Vortigaunts will Ignore you if shoot or kill one they become a threat and the Alien Controllers will come.
Yep,they don't attack.

Half life: one on one battle against a single gargantua.
Black mesa: epic chase with epic music and epic visuals.
Half life is an amazing game, but damn is it impressive what fans can do with a game when they get the chance.
yet the original is still better
@@HoroJoga debatable. But to each their own.
8:08 hey what are doing this vortigaunts friendlys
I like Interloper. It has some nice paths you can use to sneak past enemies without needing to spend any ammo. I wish more of the game included stealth.
This game pisses me off.
I have no fucking ammo
17 hp and like 35 HEV my biggest drawback for this game is the simple fact that all the health spots in the game plus health kits probably is enough to fucking get you back to 100 2 times. rediculous
i didn't even see the cave part of the first room here i just jumped off the tallest hill onto one of those moving ships
Ye, me neither. I thought it's sort of a secret area.
i ended up at 2 health after finishing that area where you gotta hatch the alien grunts.
goddamnit
Sometimes the final spinner lift won't come down, because there's a Vortigaunt on it, and if it moves to a certain place, it sorta blocks the elevator from spinning. Make sure y'preserve one missile for the missile launcher, and if this happens, launch it upwards, aimin' for the elevator's bar, that should kill the nasty alien. Alternatively, y'can use the molecule exciter too, as it can shoot thru walls an' platforms.
It's sad that this game takes such a nosedive in quality at the end.
IMHO the Xen levels are the very best.
It was always shit.
Wait I didn't even think about killing that thing, lol, I just ran right past the area and to the teleporter. Maybe that's why my game is glitching now lol
This question always puzzled me: where did the eggs come from? The Alien Grunts ought to come from somewhere.
Probably a crossbreed?
It's not known for sure, however. They must have women grunts too, considering the fact they are males. And if not, then the question brings out.. Are they doing it with female Vorts?!?!
@@ClearAndDumb I have a hunch that these three-limbed creatures are made by the Nihilanth. During the bossfight, we can actually see the Nihilanth spawning Vortigaunts and Contollers. He must have been the one laying those eggs.
@@TheLambdaTeam Yeah, I'm gonna let you think that last sentence for a bit. But, I do agree that MAYBE it did create The Grunts and Controllers, also. Unpopular opinion, we shoulda seen a Headcrabbed Alien, it would be more challenging to fight against a Headcrabbed Vortigaunt, similar to how tough the Zombine, sorta.
Yo you didn’t even take a moment at the last portal
lmao the captions [Applause] [Music]
VORT-ABUSE!!!
I just got on Nihilanth but so far the Xen levels aren't as bad as some make it out to be.
I just finished the game and to be fair the Xen levels weren't the best but they were at least fun. Nihilanth may have been kinda tedious but it took a few minutes after I developed the plan.
@@Stickman_Productions dude, im getting depressed playing this part, like what do you mean.
@@lamlelamatsiliza8550 For the plan? I went and destroyed the crystals, then killed the Nihilanth by jumping on trampolines.
IMHO Xen levels are the very best, they made a perfect alien "planet" and ecosystem, and things actually make sense here.
At this point I’m just going through the motions
funfact: i still play this game with 4:3 and the full screen mechanic is broken
Also the revolver is one of the best weapons. very powerful. its just that ammo and reloading times kinda suck, specifically finding ammo.
Also if you got any uranium and atleast 5 grenade bullet things you can kill the gargantua in like 18 seconds
You can just use up the lazor tripmines, those are useless turd anyways. You also have 5 satchel charges, this is more than enough to kill the Gargantua.
Also y'get 10 new grenades near the tentacles.
10:25 Great so you have to stay on top and NOT jump out of the water barrel to the bottom. It makes zero sense because there are supplies and a healing blue thingy at the bottom but then no possible way to jump on something and get back on track
I was trying to climb the ships...
Once again, Black Mesa did a much better job with this chapter.
es curioso que de ninos matábamos a los vortigaunts solo al verlos ahora de grandes notamos que esos vorigaunts eran amistosos y solo si les disparábamos se volvían hostiles
Jaja. Amistosos no. Te electrificaban igual. En el Half-Life 2 se descubre que estaban manipulados y luego se alían a los humanos.

@@johnnyboi4694 I have long beaten the game by now but yea, not using a variety of weapons and sticking to one/two was my problem. By the time I reached xen, I had an abundance of shotgun ammo but everything else was less which made me vulnerable to the controllers. Anyways, thanks for the advice!
