I am an owner of a 2020 Zero SR/S Premium version w/ Power Tank. I purchased it new in March of 2020. In the over four years of ownership I have had no issues with the bike. I enjoy riding it immensely, it makes me happy. I like the styling of the motorcycle. I think it’s one of the most beautiful motorcycles out there. I don’t understand the negativity surrounding it.

Hi. I've been riding for over 40 years.....everything from Piaggios and Lambrettas to Harleys, GSXR's and my current '65 BMW /2. When you say you don't "understand" the negativity, do you actually mean that you don't agree with the negativity? I think Roland made a solid case for the downsides of E-Motos. I am considering getting one myself, but I am waiting until the tradeoffs become more equitable....

Zero's biggest failure is they do not support DC Fast Charging which means the majority of stations you come across will not be usable. Compared to Energica Zero really looks like they haven't innovated in over five years. I believe in the US all Cypher features are just included in the price because of such poor reception of having to buy feature on the bike already

I think KTM were the first to start this pay wall scam. They got away with it as people just kept on buying their bikes. It seems Zero have now joined in on it. I’m a fan of all electric vehicles, but their absurd pricing is where I draw the line. How on earth can Zero (or Energica for that matter) justify selling their electric motorbikes at similar prices to some electric cars??? We’ve been told for so long that the reason for the higher cost of electric vehicles is due to the batteries. The top spec version of the recently released MG4 hatchback sells for around 30K euros! The MG’s come with more than double the battery capacity of these electric bikes. Yet Zero/Energica’s bikes cost as much as the MG? I debated long and hard with myself about getting an electric bike, but I’m sorry Zero/Energica. Your greed has convinced me to stick with ICE bikes. I understand that being smaller companies, you lack the economies of scale that the bigger car brands have… nonetheless, you don’t grow your customer base by pricing yourselves out of the market. To quote the words of the Dragons in the UK show “Dragons’ Den”, “I’m sorry, but I’m out!”

    Hello Roland,
For atleast 35 years i drove motorcycles the whole year around. As soon as the salt came on the road i left my "better" bike at home. And used a special bike for that purpose. As you know salt is so extremely agressive that it will destroy the complete motorcycle. After a few years it takes a lot of maintenance to keep it rolling. We call such a bike a Pekelfiets (Saltbike). As you allready know cause you are Dutch.
A few times the thought came popping back into my mind to sell my car and go riding motor again in winter.
What about riding electric motorcycle ? Is such a Zero much better protected against salt ? Or does it also go everywhere and destroy the bike ?
For what you are telling. A lot of manufacterus do that. They lock certain software options. And if you want those option you have to pay a lot of money. They hook it at a computer and it done within a few seconds.
Husqvarna for example also does this with their Norden 901. A complete mapping is installed but certain options are locked right from the factory. And they let you pay a lot of money to have it unlocked. Very easy money. But as you i also see this as a complete scam. A horrible scam.
But he, They have the power to do so. It is a KTM thing. They also do the exact same thing with the 890R. And this has generated a lot of money for them.
As many times as i could i adressed this scam on RUclips. And if others also start doing this they finally have to stop that kind of evil. I hope. It would be better if they gave all the those people their money back. Motorriders have to do shitty jobs and make hardworking long hours to be able to ride motor. And they allready pay a lot of money. And then stealing their money in such cheap way is worthy for a bullit through their kneecaps. Both kneecaps. 🤬🤬

Put your smartphone in the beach for one week, you surely will note how salt and humidity affects your battery. The take an Electric bike and put it on the beach one week, you'll be terrified on how your battery will be affected, then buy a Tesla and Park it in the beach for six months. If you have some more money to spare buy and Electric motorcycle and expect to spend even more within one year on a battery replacement. If you have some more money to spend you can donate it to me so I can buy a Ducati.

I have a DSR, the previous generation, and ride around 100 miles at a time on back roads. The battery life is designed for about 200K miles and you save on fuel, servicing and the time lost attending to them. If you want to save money long-term buy a moped :D Buy for long-term ownership as selling is tricky and a warranty that's honored. I believe (but don't actually know) that software that was outsourced is now handled in-house and is now stable. I bought my Zero because my antiques were getting way too many additional miles once I retired ;)

I'm not going to defend ZERO as a company, no one should defend these businesses. But I've been looking into these ZERO's and possibly an Energica if I can find a dealer here in the states who offers the Experia. The model of bike you showed in the video is the SR/S which is their top model. The base model of that style is the SR which goes for $20,000.
I've compared the SR/S, the DSR/X and the Energica Experia to each other and the Energica is the most expensive of the bunch starting at $25,880+VAT for us here in the states being it is a European motorcycle and all. For us the ZERO SR/S starts at $24,000 and the DSR/X starts at $24,500. So if I can't get my hands on a Energica Experia the only other choice of electric bike is a ZERO. There's not really many choices here in my region.
I don't have to worry about people in groups being embarrassed to ride with me as I don't ride with anyone but a friend of mine. We don't ride with big groups and probably never will as riding for us is more of a relaxation thing. Being in a big group is not relaxing.
I'm thinking electric as it would be perfect for my needs. My town is nothing but intersections and stop lights so the electric is perfect for stop-n-go riding in the summer. My job is also within a mile of my house so riding one of these things to work in the summer would last a while on a charge. I also don't travel very far so whatever range it offers is good enough for me. :)

So, you haven’t actually ridden it then? OK, it’s expensive, very expensive, but it’s different. You could buy a GS, but the 1250s are unreliable, so I wouldn’t bother.
Used Zeros in the U.K. are pretty reasonable, but that’s because it’s new tech and bikers are a conservative bunch. I haven’t tried a Zero yet, but I have ridden the Harley Livewire, and that was incredible. So I’d like to try a Zero. I’m not too worried about battery life - I have a 9 year old Renault Zoe and it’s still pretty good.
I too don’t see why I have to pay for upgrades that are already within the bike, but are they? Maybe it’s an update to the operating system that has been refined, like Tesla do. Anyway KTM are now doing the same thing.
For now I’ll stick to my Africa Twin 1100 and RD350LC, but I remain open minded, which is a good thing!

    • @TheRideWithRoland
      @TheRideWithRoland  Год назад

Keep the twin ! 😃 I own 2 and I really love them. (Old one ‘95 and atas 2019)
But, there is more then zero. So just explore the market. Within a few years every bike company makes them. But I would not set my hope on electric too much. There is not enough lithium to make every vehicle electric.
So I don’t believe that is gonna be the future. Well maybe for a part but not the standard. Unless they invent something without lithium 🤷‍♂️
      Anyway, ride safe :)

  • @Meifesto

Price is roughly the same as the big electric bikes, Energica and Livewire.
Also the FX or FXE is only 16k ;)
Range didn't drop that much when i rode it at 180 for quite some time. So that point is outdated.
So the only real downside is the features behind an extra paywall... But...
That is happening with most electric cars as well. Some gasoline bikes also have it (looking at GXS950 vs GXS1000 for example).

The features are on the bike already, and you have to pay more to unlock them. And almost no customer/tech/repair service. Zero also has cheap parts on the bike. Cheap mirrors, cheap buttons, cheap electrical, cheap headlight, brake light, turn signals, and so much more. I found the mirrors from china source like ebay or alibaba for $20. Still no level three charging, compared to other far better electric motorcycles.

Nobody should do business with a company which gelds the on-board capabilities you paid for and holds the unlock codes for ransom. What I'd like to see is some standardization, plug-and-play safety, portability, and utility in the lithium battery pack field. If a 50AH, 72V battery, say, 4,000KWH, on a small e-motorcycle like the Sondors will cost me over half the value of the bike, that's a significant investment. You'd need the power two of those to power a larger electric motorcycle. I'd like that battery or battery or twin pack to be able to be pulled easily and chargeable separately, for urban dwellers who lack an outdoor charge outlet. For homeowners, I'd like that battery pack to also be compatible to serve a pure sine wave inverter as a handy AC power source during outages, and also be able to put it in a riding mower, powered watercraft (outboard or jet-ski), hydraulic log splitter, wood chipper, bandsaw, etc. Why buy multiple batteries for these things and more when you will be using only one of them at a time, or only sporadically? This would significantly lower the carbon end ecologically-damaging mining and battery manufacture processing footprint of e-vehicles. I emailed Zero and asked them if they would be willing to partner with other manufacturers to create an industry standard to power mid-size applications; I never got the courtesy of a response. If a company is unresponsive before the sale, how will the act after the sale? Zero is off my consideration list.

Zero are not the only company doing that. I am not defending them at all, but Tesla also do that and i also heard KTM have some featurs which they unlock if u pay extra You are not the only one who is upset because of it. My Zero is 2016 i bouth it second hand, it cost 8850 Ero i September 20. Battary wad replaced under warranty by previous owner.
Zero SR which i owe has 70hp which it can maintain for a short period of time before the motor over heat but 70 hp at 6000 rpm put me in 175kmh which my neck will not hold long time, bike can sustain 140kmh with no problem.
I try to do the best not damaging the battery, not letting it to charch at highet temp during summer ace. I can charge any were using ususal outlet. It makes an amazing everyday commiter, it has showa suspension which can me tuned for dump and rebound both front and back. Electric bikes have higher center of gravity so need to get used to, on the other hand they are higher torqu and can do sveral level of engine breacking perfect for hilly roads, you can ride only with the accelerator not touching the breacks. During the tume i owend the bick i did not need any maintenance only aside tier replacement. I assume the battary will live another 50kkm easley .
Aside of Zero what options do you have if you want to ride Electric?
Energica is an Italian elecctric motorcycle it is much better, but cost almost twice as much.
I do not know why Supercharging is expensive in Netherlands, take in to account that the cost of building one station is arround 200k us$, any how Zero cant connect to a supercharger only to Type 2. Home electricity in Israel cost areound 0.125 Ero a kwh. Zero 14.4 battery can hold 11.4 kwh meaning full battay charging cost is 1.433 Ero, the bike will do 130 km at an avarage speed of 140km and about 190 km at an avarge speed of 90-100kmh, these costs are very low. Insurance is a big thing in israel. Basik motorcycle insurance yearly cost is 1100 ero, but for a Zero it is 550 Ero(bike foes 0 to 100 in 3.3sec).
Put all that aside i will not buy a nother Zero, the build quality and its general reliability is a big No for me. Saying all that, i can understand the business prospective of Zero maximasing their income with higher prices. I do not think Zero sells more than 5000 biks a year and with these low voliums cant see how they make any profit, not sure they will exist in 10 years. No company can stay alive like that, but i can not predict the future

@@TheRideWithRoland it is a Huge difference. You cant compare between the two. Zero is a part bin motorcycle meaning the main drivetrian components are off the shelf, they are not designed by Zero. This leads to much less optimaized design. Energicas drive train all are inhose dwsignd. They are much more optimized, the motor and controller are packed together amd both are liquid cooled, they are lightrt and will not limit the bike top speed, all Energicas has two charges an AC 3kw and a DC 24kw. @@brittennz Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences with your Zero. It looks like you got a fairly good deal if you bought the bike for a lot less than half price. But that’s really evidence of their TRUE value isn’t it? There’s no way they are worth their new price.
A lot of really good real bikes hold their value over time. MV Augustas for instance. Indeed, some truly awful things from Harley Davidson also quite inexplicably hold their value over a long time.
But from a market perspective, this actually only reinforces what a really bad deal it is to buy Zeros new. Furthermore, because the need to replace the battery after such a very short period of time proves they are clearly not sustainable, they make a total mockery of the mainstream narratives around their introduction.
Another marketing observation is that Zero are apparently using the specific top-down pioneered by Steve Jobs at Apple after 1996, which culminated in the hugely successful iPod business model after 2003.
However, Apple products were vastly superior to their competitors, and had a lot longer useful life, therefore their premium pricing was entirely justified. After 30 years, in each case, All my Macs still work. After the same period, all my Hondas also still work, as do all my other real bikes.
Conversely, after less than 10 years, Zero owners will be left with a frame, two wheels, worn out suspension, a scrap motor and some extremely volatile and hazardous waste for which there is no sustainable recycling process. That’s NOT a good deal.
      Peace

Indeed. Plus, one should not only look at the price to buy. You have to look at the total cost of ownership. Including maintenance, taxes, fuel,....
If you ride a lot, you will see, that you can easily add 5000 euro extra for an electric bike compared to an fossil fuel stove.
If you only ride on sundays, in the summer, as a tourist, you better stick with an ICE. But if you commute by motorcycle, it is really interesting to look at electric.

They are always riding by themselves because no one wants to buddy-up with a guy on an electric bike because you won't be going very far, and if it needs charging who wants to wait around for an hour. i'll have to look into how much exactly i can get back. if it costs 14,000 and i can get back at least 4k. 10k for work transport seems fair if it serves me long enough. love the style of dual sport bikes but they're so damn loud. while i like the sound myself, i often go to work late and get home early. i would wake up thousands of people as i ride by. don't like that. so despite all the issues, it still seems the best option for me. also in the future they might ban gas bikes completely from cities. this covers me from that. tough choices..

Youre witnessing the real problem with electric motorcycles. Every km your getting more the price increases exponentially. In defense of the manufacturers, the problem is just the battery technology. For a motorbike you have little space for the battery, so you need a high density and low volume capacity. But also for motorbikes the weight must be low. This leads to the only solution for better range to have batteries with a high lithium proportion, because it has the highest density. But this makes it expensive.
Also we will not see revolution in price and range because there is no better material yet, sodium is only an option for the cars.
With all the information I found about batteries, I guess electric motorbikes will only be useful for city commuting, with ranges around 50-80km, depending on the outside temperature.
For highway commuting it is better to get a cheap e-car. If you ride motorbikes for fun or for traveling, combustion engine will stay the only option (for many years at least).

Lots of premium mobility brands sell you software unlocked features now a days even you mentioned brand BMW. Sure the bikes are expensive maybe even too expensive, but after 8 years of driving them I can confirm they are premium. Nothing breaks and the fuel can be incredible cheap if you charge it on solar. Biggest problem is, it's not for cruising all weekend because of the range and more important the relatief slow charging time. It main use case is to drive to work and back I'm afraid. And for that is use understand it not for everyone... I use mine only for that and I'm very pleased with the bike. But indeed I also understand your reaction, if you only look at the numbers and specs why would someone choose a zero over a BMW...! Tesla have been doing the same things when they were starting up (Pay to unlock battery capacity and more performance, pay to unlock autopilot-capabilities etc), once the market and the products mature then the pricing and the unreasonable software purchases will be tweaked or removed. The solution is just more competition and higher volumes.

For example used ones are dirt cheap at America, and has already tested by owners or installed extras.
You could try it with other kind of electric motorcycle and that would be more accurate.

If something breaks causr quality issue and you are still under warranty period somehow, but you have insurance they tell you to replace it on the insurace monet not under warranty, manu cases like that.
DC charg facts are also missing.
For DC the battery voltage need to be much higher so they have to make more series of blocks in battery, but they are based on the 28S deseign. No way to add DC fast charge unless they redesign everything, power system, engine etc....
Unlocking features for extra money: it is very common nowadays.

Echt ziek toch ?

This video is not against electric bikes, it’s just the way zero seems to squeeze every Penny out of their clients.
You say the build quality, service and reliability is bad, but that’s not something you would expect by a bike this expensive, right?
Plus, I really think the prices second hand will drop fast once the battery had its best time, so the profit you have now will be over a few years be a serious loss. It’s not easy to sell then knowing what bill lays ahead for a battery change.
But that’s not what the video is about. It’s just about they can’t seem to get enough. It’s bad for the client, but also for the whole motorcycle industry since more companies are messing now with DLC. They should have kept that in the gaming world in my opinion, not in bikes or cars. And we must take a stand for that stuff, whatever you ride, don’t you agree? :)

The battery life should be good for 200,000 miles (agreed it’s not the range on one charge!) and there is minimal to no servicing required. To me this all feels like the companies are taking advantage of this whole “green” thing.
I would never buy a motorcycle above 30k. It’s just weird to buy 2 wheels while you good have a serious good car for the same money.
