Hi Guys, I suspect that you will find that the block walls are going to be very cold in the winter. You might consider installing some external insulation (similar to foam board but made for the purpose) over the exterior followed by some kind of siding. That way you will still have the benefit of the thermal mass but without the massive heat loss from the low R-value block and concrete. Otherwise it looks great! All the best from California! 🧡
Northern Europe here and I would do the same. Our houses are often built similar to the small wall they made and we put insulation on the outside and the inside. For a seedling room one would properly be enough, but I think is definitly needed in this cold climate and it´s properly cheaper in the long run regarding the costs to heat the room.
@@EastRiverHomesteadshe did explain thermal mass, unfortunately in cold climates it must be very well insulated to work. That uninsulated exposed wall will suck the heat right out of that room, just like leaving the windows open.
Thermal mass is like a big rainwater tank - it's the right solution for storage if the source of the heat/water is intermittent, like rain is intermittent water or a wood stove is intermittent heat. But neither thing is any use if your nice storage just leaks straight to the outside!
Mindy I also wish I could REWIND my LIFE! I’m 73. Kind of hard to look ahead when our clocks are winding down. I find myself extremely depressed every morning I wake up. And the state of our world for sure ant helping me at all 😢 🇺🇸🗽🇺🇸

Eric, you can use a concrete sealer on those blocks and it will prevent any moisture issues and prevent the mortar joints from cracking and causing a gap that can cause rain and snow damage. Just an FYI. Love the way you two work together.
My husband and I look forward to your videos. We learn so much and can’t wait to put it to practice on a property we bought. By the way we drool 🤤 every time you bake and cook those amazing meals ❤
Without putting foam insulation or something on the outside of that concrete block wall, all the heat will get sucked out of that building unless you're going to burn 20 cords of wood non-stop just to heat that space. Even then it will be impossible to keep the temps throughout the space uniform. You've simply got to insulate the outside of that wall...do it now as it will be harder to retrofit later!
@@daves4391 All you gotta do is look at the way their pet door has a bunch of ice all over it in the winter even though they keep their house over 80 degrees inside. Maybe put 2 layers of 3" foam board with staggered, taped seams onto the outside of the block wall using construction adhesive (making sure it's not the kind that will melt the foam) and then make a set of "storm windows" to add to the outside over double pane windows for added insulation, or at least put in heavy duty insulated curtains for when the sun isn't out (I'd do both).
I agree, block stays cold,it would almost be worth taking it down, ouch but it isn't worth the chill in a seed room. They did a really good job though for first timers.
@@revens-j3k If they have a thick enough close cell foam thermal break on the outside of it, it actually could act as thermal mass inside once it's heated up. Unfortunately, there's no insulation under the slab for the room either, so even though they're running their radiant floor heat in there, that too will suck out a LOT of heat given the climate.
You two are very canny about the machinery that you buy, but that mill has been worth every penny. It is marvelous, and I'll bet the pioneers would be green with envy to have such a miracle.
My thoughts exactly. I was just thinking.. which pieces of equipment are most valuable.. in decending order. That mill is a game changer. Of course that tractor 🚜 is a total necessity. Let's face it... everything is well thought out on this homestead. 👍
watching you both learn as you go reminded me of learning from my grandfather and great uncle how to lay brick and block as a kid. my great grandfather owned a construction company and he mainly did masonry so they learned as kids and taught some cousins and i... that looks a lot better than our first walls haha.
4:32 The second block is upside down, but it looked like the masonry crew laid them the right way up. You needed to start at the corners and the building, then pull a string to fill-in the blocks in the middle. You did not have to do each core, start the coroners and then every fourth core is ok. It came out looking good.

Awesome seeing you guys go from novices to old hands over a few days getting that cement block masonry done. A suggestion for the outside of the blocks, a layer of insulation to all all that mass to maintain the heat, and not radiating it out into the winter void would be a big help in maximizing its value. Probably not to hard to figure out a way to put some in and make some basic siding with offcuts from the sawmill. Just a suggestion :)
