What a great video. Very relaxing to watch your workshop coming together. Good job you had a spare piece of HRRFRRFRRURRMLMLMLLOOMPAHLOOMPAHLENE lying around. I'd hate to try asking for that in a hardware shop.
Another great video and I prefer subtitles I think it just works especially in your videos and your videos are straight into the action rather then listening to Someone waffling on for 10 mins before the action starts, keep them coming please

It's funny, when I saw this video six months ago, I thought: "cool, but unnecessary." Flash forward to now, and I've acquired a 12" planer/jointer whose planer bed looks like it was machined with a steak knife. Needless to say that I have now ordered some UHHGMMGMDWWWWDDWPPPLLPLPPTHTLELLELNEEETHELENE.
Nice video - I admire your persistence - I used an overlong strip of Melamine (whiteboard) which fixed my snipe issue & is more slippery than the steel bed on my Elektra Beckham

I did the same to my old Wilson planer but used the stuff they make kitchen worktop jigs from as I have some huge sheets of the stuff. Not as slick as uhWMP but with a spray of P T F E it's much better than the cast iron was.

i love your work, you are mesmerizing to watch and have so many talents. May i ask with this one how come you didnt tap the aluminium and use small machine screws counter sunk to pull it down flat besides the gluing ? i would of though that would be less chance of failure in the future or bulging again if the glue gives way

I think maybe related to the extension of the table to reduce snipe. i.e. making it longer than the original cast iron one.
Hello, very interesting video! I have a similar planer thicknesser. I was wondering about the blade guard and riving knife on your table saw, which looks absolutely brilliant in that you can leave it on even when making deep cuts, and you have the overhead dust collection just where you need it. Is this an after market one that you bought or did you make it yourself? Would be great to get some more info please!
the saw was originally in a college I think, im sure it came with a kind of instruction manual labelled as being from york college.
anyway, the yellow part is some kind of aluminium cast blade guard and the extraction pipe looks to have been added on later but it is really effective. the riving knife is original wadkin part, the rest is aftermarket but i couldnt say where from.
have you tried WD40 dry lube, or there are PTFE sprays used for aiding mold release
Love that Delrin! Machines like butter (or walnut). Did you consider using honeycomb aluminum panel material for this? You do really nice work.
UHMWPE is not Delrin. Sheet of Delrin is going to be a decent price bump. Honeycomb aluminum... a serious price bump.

im not sure how common it is, it think its main intention as a product is a fairly accurate starting place for milling, cnc routing etc. i got it from aluminium warehouse. it is listed on metal supermarkets as well. it cost £120! i talked a bit about it in the blog linked in the description, 4mm 6082t6 is probably good enough for what i used it for as a cheaper alternative.
Is your thicknesser helical cut or straight knives if it's knives how long between sharpens ?
Would the aluminium have made a smooth bed without the plastic?

Could you not hinge the press back against the wall somehow where you are using it? it looks to be empty enough to accommodate it.

Does the super flat bed eliminate snipe, or reduce it noticeably?
completely eliminated! If you do this and still have snipe on the thicknesser then it may be the rollers need adjusting for more pressure.

Why dont you use the superflat aluminium plate?
even as shiny as it is it has a much higher coeficient of friction, which worsen when it gets scratched

Had to laugh when you were winding down the thickness bed as it makes the same terrible noises as mine, I have the same machine and it looks to be the same vintage, any idea when it was made?
lol, yeah it winds me up haha. no idea of machine age but i think it was the second major iteration
@@NewYorkshireWorkshopYes I think the 1st ones had cast iron side slabs down to the ground. The noise, first the groans then the squeeks LOL. On mine I tried ajusting the feed roller tension springs which improved the feed a bit and I also had to file down the one of the bed roller end blocks a few thou to make it parallel to the bed, it works perfect 90% of the time. You seem to have sorted yours, well done, a good fix
My benchtop thickness planer made that noise until I adjusted the cutter head to be level across the width and lubricated the four rods.
It's like reinventing the wheel with squares. Not getting it? If you want to get rid of Snipe. Align your machine. If it is moving too slow change gears. If the bed not flat because someone dropped it from a truck mill the bed. The simple spray non-stick silicone works fine if you want to see the board slide real nice, but that does not change much the product.
no its like putting up with old wooden wagon wheels, decades after alloy wheels and Pirelli's have been invented.
@@NewYorkshireWorkshop Well. if you're that certain you have Pirelli wheels over Wooden wagon wheels, better get that patent in as soon as possible as every major brand is still pumping out milled metal platforms. You could be really rich. Meanwhile, I milled thousands of board feet with zero snipe and excellent flatness. Sometimes, well maybe most times it's not the machine.
Seems such a shame to scratch that beautiful finish on the ally.
Have you ever thought about getting a digital readout for your planer/thicknesser?
hi Davyd long time no see. ye they tend to be expensive for the good ones and i can be really accurate as it is with the ruler guage, would be much more worthwhile on the spindle moulder

Good to see that mod in a bit more detail. I got the esta bruck planer knives and holders you recommended before. Its like a different machine now. I'm seriously thinking about modding the thicknesser bed like this too. Is the vacuum press homemade or bought? Is it just for flat stuff or can it do more irregular and larger stuff too? Keep up the good work!
glad that worked out for you! the press is home made and yeah i mostly use it for flat stuff, it will pull down over curves but if it is quite deep it can be tricky to keep things in place since the membrane is stretched into the frame and will have a tendency to move stuff around when you close the door

Mdf can swell with humidity
MDF is not as rigid as plywood, in fact it is shit
Seems a shame to scratch up the nice aluminium surface.
