My dad was a single parent who raised me n my sister after our mum left for drugs. He used to sing to us and dance to this song round the front room. What an amazing song and lyrics. They don't make them like this anymore ❤❤❤
Rattle snakes this is real music,it's smooth and easy to listen to,not like alot of the shit music that is around now
Your dad is a hero! Praise men like him ❤
@@ukuburu1972 ❤️❤️❤️
for sure, nearly 60, love the memories of the time
A real man
One of the very seldom exemples of albums that are perfect from beginning to end
Not a bad track on it mate :)
Completely agree. Brilliant 👏
True. How is that? This album was made from songs to released album within about six months I've read. Such a gem.
Mixed this in studio B at Electric Lady Studios in New York City with Ric Ocasek. Just me and Ric. A day I will always remember. R.I.P. Ric...
Wow - you really had a life experience. I'm amazed.
If there is a more underrated musical artist in the last 50 years, I'm open to hearing nominations
Matt Johnson. Love them both.
Not only this song, the whole album is sensational.
My friend used to love playing this on guitar. RIP Benny Harvey, gone but not forgotten. miss ya big man ❤
Looking up at ya, big guy, RIP Benny
Rip sonny jim
Having a muffit of tea in his memory
One second of this is better than a lifetime of whatever they call music these days.
I love this song
Yep.... Just don't go to a concert now.....
I recently moved, and got my vinyl collection out of the hole in my old house and set up a nice spot for my turntable at the new place; I'd been going through record by record, remembering all these artists I hadn't listened to in over 20 years. I got out Rattlesnakes and Easy Pieces, and have just been listening to them constantly for the last 4 days, unable to move on to the next artist.
Unbelievable what amazing lyrics they had - some brilliant one liners that most artists can't even come close to.
I've loved the tori amos cover for most of my life and randomly decided to look up the original and you're right. It's awesome!
This song brings back a lot of memories to the fantastic music that has been made in the 80s. Rattlesnakes is legendary.
Certainly "Rattlesnakes" is one of the GREATEST debut records of all-time! It's the gift that's kept giving for three and a half decades!
fantastic song + Voice
This year (1985) I discovered Lloyd Cole and Prefab Sprout simultaneously. Overwhelming. Both bands came to my hometown, Frankfurt (Germany). Paid 12DM ($6) at the time. Did we know that we lived in good times? We didn't.
@@ThiloBauer The same year I discovered them. A cute boy told me I reminded them of the song "Perfect Skin." The whole album is brilliant.
@@monicamoore663 Couldn't agree more. But - didn't we all have perfect skin back then? (-: But, for sure, this is one of the nicest ways to pick someone up I know, great memory!
And forest fire
.... oh its so hard to love when love was your great disappointment. How prophetic.
What an amazing display of talent. This is one of those rare songs in which everything is exactly in its place. Lyrics, drums, bassline, guitar strums, string flourishes... A masterpiece of the genre.
This song has a melody of a certain kind.
It sure does !!!!!
I once met Lloyd Cole at a charity event. He was surprisingly down to earth, and very funny.
I think it’s called genius, you know it as soon as you hear it if you really have a passion and an understanding of music, that might sound pretentious, but it’s true. I’m only interested in those kind of melodies.
Cuts through the gloom of these dystopian times like a laser light of pure joy.
What a great name for a newspaper! 😅
Well put
100%
Anybody ever come here to watch this?......☘
Still resonates after all these years
Had a drink with Lloyd after a gig he did in Milton Keynes over 20 yrs ago, lovely guy, signed my Rattlesnake's CD which I still have, treasure it.
Surprisingly down to earth and VERY FUNNY !
A most under-rated lyricist and a great singer to boot
was a big fan of lloyd cole and matt johnson (the the) they should both should been huge!! their influence have filtered down the decades this song ,perfect skin, speedboat and especially forest fire came off this great debut album.
And Roddy Frame!
And Paul Heaton and Paddy McAloon
Such a beautiful song, never to be forgotten😢❤
"it's hard to love, when love was your great disappointment" is the real hidden gem lyric in the song.
Seeing him tonight in Hamilton...💄 ready now!
Lucky you...hope he plays Rattlesnakes!
Yip 👍👍👍 ....Rattlesnakes was 3rd last night on the setlist
Great to hear it live again 😁
@@lynnasfindlay68 I am officially green with envy.
Next you will be telling me he played"Are You Ready to be Heartbroken"!
Erm, yeah...all the old hits and plenty new stuff too
1st set was Lloyd solo; 2nd set he brought Neil Clark on stage 🎸🎸
Always been in love with Lloyd..."she reads Simone de Bouvoir, with her American circumstance" ...no one writes lyrics like this anymore! He writes like a novelist...
"She tries her luck with the traffic police, out of boredom more than spite..." etc...
Agree. Awesome lyrics.
chris issak maybe
anyway "'all you need is love is all you need''
Chris Isaak? lol!
Catalina Quijano one of my most favorite lyrical lines EVER!
he get a reaction outta ya, ya have tae give him that
I was a single dad to with to boys.there are all grown up now and we 🎉😂got there.happy days x
My addendum: Glad there's SO many other musical like-minds out there regardless of where they grew up. It's WONDERFUL that we've ALL convened here 30 years later with a deep love of Lloyd Cole's memorable songwriting!
Berlin Saint Clair So true :)
I’m with you my friend!
Quelle élégance !! Vive Lloyd Cole and the Commotions.
I loved this song so much as a teen in the 80s back in Ireland , memories come flooding back to me …and yet I was today years old to discover that Lloyd settled years back here in Massachusetts to raise a family, funny to know that a musical hero of mine settled in the same neck of the woods as myself ❤
I think that is cool. I am so happy here is here. All newly minted citizens should be so valuable.
“She looks like Eva Marie Saint in ‘On the Waterfront’ ah-ha-uh, she reads Simone De Beauvoir in her American circumstance” is one of the greatest and prettiest lyrics and melodies in the history of music, no contest. ❤
Beautiful voice ! Beautiful lyrics ! Beautiful music ! Beautifully played !
What more could anyone want ?
Xxx
@@nickunderwood6175 A great album. X
How I love Lloyd Cole.... all my youth. I had absolutly all his albums, even the compilations !
part of my growing up lloyd cole was great in a generation of greats
This lad, this lad here. Has an intelligence of a certain kind.
Bring back lyrics like this
I’ve just found this song! Absolutely dynamite 🧨
their albums are fire quality
Still got the album. Sounds like it was released only yesterday. Great song from a great era that I wish I could re-live.
Loved being young and cool listening to this. Well, I was young, and listening to this.
Forget Prozac, take two Lloyd Cols songs daily if symptoms persist buy a louder stereo.
TheFaceless Men yes, Doctor
Now that is funny...and at simplest FACT
❤️
TheFaceless Men I’m deaf now
Hasn't worked
One of the best songs of the 80s. Genius
Absolutely
And still...
Phenomenal track
Fantastic singer and songwriter.Pisses all over 99.99 percent of todays music.
Make it 100
word up
yeah let's say..100% :)
This a great jangly pop song. m.ruclips.net/video/rD4AANojivE/видео.html
There says someone who doesn’t listen to today’s music.
Lloyd writes some amazing songs . This was one of my favourites.
Lloyd wrote these wonderful short stories and prose and Neil Clark's guitar makes me swoon.
It is something else isnt it. Reminds me of some Brian Wilson. The arrangements are perfect
Torce para um grande time meu amigo o Manchester . Abraço do Brasil 👍👍. A propósito a banda é nostálgica som maneiro
SWOON another great first album from prefab sprout .....just thought i drop that in there lloyd cole brilliant songwriter
Sooo good sooo underrated 🎉
Underrated ... an understatement!
Brilliant...one of my fave songwriters....and he worked in The Beatles into the lyrics too. Genius.
A classic that never got the recognition it deserved. A brilliant song with brilliant lyrics
Love this! Since my youth... and dont know why, this song has been in my mind the last few days...
Intelligence of a certain kind went into this tune. Genius!
Fabulous👌
Amigos hoje com 52 anos ...não me canso de ouvir... que música boa anos 80 ...Ô saudade... um forte abraço em todos.

53... So same as you said! Big hug too.. :)
This is my go to album. Still sounds great.
Was a big fan of this band when this came out. Saw them live too in 1985, Vredenburg Utrecht
A different world
I saw Lloyd a few years later solo in a concert,in Obidos Portugal it was a good show, even if he seems a little bit drunk but he delivered a good show
I've been playing all there records loads recently, god they are good.
Saw him last night. Crowd went crazy when this started 👌
Is he in the UK ?
An absolute 80s classic!!
Hell, an absolute all time classic!!!!
still one of my favorite songs ever
Beside CHARLOTTE STREET
Class
Adult, post graduate, beautifully played, beautifully recorded, lovely string arrangement....nothing like this now...or is there? Cheers from Australia.
Played this album to death when it came out and still sounds fresh.
"She looks like Eve Marie Saint In On the Waterfront," one of the best lines ever!
Javi Gomez
She reads Simone de Beauvoir in her American circumstance.
For decades I thought he was singing 'She looks like a human rissole'
Bert JM
Lol 😂.
@@robertmumby4586 thanks that made my day
Until this moment I always thought it was 'she looks like Hugh Marisell in On the Waterfront '. Googled the cast members from the film years ago and was none the wiser so let it drop. And only now do I understand, so a big thanks for that.
WHAT A TUNE !!!! ; )
I was at the Butchers Hook and Cleaver Pub by Smithfield’s market at 7:45pm on a random Thursday in 2006? My friend excitedly told me he just got two free tickets to Lloyd Cole and the Commotions at Hammersmith Apollo starting at 8pm, should we go? We immediately jumped in a cab. We told the cab driver what was up, he was of an age that he understood and we got there before the first note. Best concert ever.
It's always good to revisit this classic. Should be on everyone's playlist.
This is such a wonderful song
Miss my teenage years! Damn I’m 51 years old now but still dig this song!
One of the best bands to come out of the 1980's.
intelligence of a sort
All Intelligence is of a sort.
@@iananderson3799 but this is really of a certain kind
Yeah I just find it hard to emphasise with this guy
I think in order to like his music you have to like him, and I just don't find myself liking him
@@jamesgodberry9793 well said, I can’t help but find him utterly without charm
When I was a teenager, living in Germany, my boyfriend at the time had this cute British guy visiting. The three of us hung out a couple of times. When he travelled back to the UK, he gifted me a cassette of the Rattlesnake album. We hadn’t listened to it, but he said he wanted me to have it. Thought I’d like it. Should have dumped my boyfriend and travelled with him. 💕 Still got the tape in a drawer somewhere.
Found this bc of the Tori Amos cover. Amazing song, AMAZING lyrics. Wow, new great band.
So glad my teenage days was in the 80's totally unforgettable
You are so right! I hadn't realised to be so fortunate to be young in the 80's. Thank you for reminding ;-)
Totally
This was sooooo ahead of the curve. This would easily fit in with songs by the 90s bands like Toad The Wet Sprocket, etc.
LOL
Soul mate ♥️
Unfortunately Lloyd has never had the credit as an artist that he derserves way better than similar artists at that time , I left school in 86 when his fame was rising ,I'm such a big fan of his that I named my first born Lloyd who doesn't get his music ,well I don't get dance music so each to there own.
We used to drive across Texas a lot when I was a kid and we picked up his solo album in a gas station discount bin. My whole family and I are lifelong Lloyd Cole fans because of that little find. I passed the love on now to my family!
The harmonies are absolutely sublime on most of their songs
Oh, takes me back, how young does Lloyd look? Great song/album, got me through a hard time back then.
intelligence, wit, poetry, melody
Went to see him in Manchester last night he was great and very, very funny!
Fabulous melody, awesome track.. thanks Lloyd and the commotions..
Loved Lloyd cole great musician.
❤
Heard it on the wireless this morning. Lovely.
Wow nearly 40 years old still fresh as a daisy... Whole album is superb
Best Album of the 80s
Amazing to think that Eva Marie Saint turned 100 earlier this month
Fantastic song. I miss the 80s.
So do I
80s music ,what can I say, great music and a great era ,if I could travel back in time I would go there and never and stay there!
I miss the 80s too this world is shit now with all this violence and covid shit!!
This is certainly 'music' of a certain kind... I hope this young fellow knows his way around Macromedia Flash, something tells me he's gonna need it.
They barely had Computers when this song came out
@@johns8790 Is it a song? I thought it was the sound of a bin full of defective violins being emptied.
@@rich8642 you obviously know very little about music.
I'm living four flights up ! I still think I'm underground !
Im glad you remember good things x
Pretentious and marvelous
Four days to go until we get to see Lloyd in concert in beautiful Wellington, New Zealand, cannot wait!!
One of my favourite absolute ! From 1984 i am still a huge fan of LLOYD COLE and the COMMOTIONS
Sou apaixonado por esse música amo demais
Here are these amazing and wonderful lyrics :
Jodie wears a hat although it hasn't rained for six days
She says a girl needs a gun these days
Hey, on account of all the rattlesnakes
She looks like Eva Marie Saint in "On the Waterfront"
She reads Simone de Beauvoir in her American circumstance
She is less than sure if her heart has come to stay in San Jose
And her neverborn child still haunts her
As she speeds down the freeway
As she tries her luck with the traffic police
Out of boredom more than spite
She never finds no trouble, she tries too hard
She's obvious despite herself
She looks like Eva Marie Saint in "On the Waterfront"
She says all she needs is therapy
Yeah, all you need is love is all you need
Jodie never sleeps because there are always needles in the hay
She says that a girl needs a gun these days
Hey, on account of all the rattlesnakes
She looks like Eva Marie Saint in "On the Waterfront"
As she reads Simone de Beauvoir in her American circumstance
Her heart... heart's like crazy paving
Upside down and back to front
She says, "Ooh, it's so hard to love
When love was your great disappointment"
I was.there...AMAZING TIMES!!
@bofursgun An opinion is just that.
@bofursgun Wow! I can't wait to read your lyrics and listen to your song writing abilities! You must be better than Dylan, Mitchell, Bush, Cohen, Bach, Rimbaud, Dante, et al thrown in together. Send links! Anxiously awaiting..
It's so hard to love when love was sure a great dissapoointment
@@nope5445 maybe...
Que música linda!
Sim,linda demais.
saw him in 85, 91, 2002, 2009, 2016 what a long decade. over 31 years...almost nobody knows him in germany ..
I'm so thankful we had a real progressive alternative radio station, whfs in Maryland. So much great music that would never be played on commercial radio. These guys, modern English, icehouse and many more
OMG YES
I was stationed in DC 85-88. WHFS is still the best progressive/alternative station that ever was. Thoughtful, well spoken DJs who knew music. I miss them. Better than KROQ ever did.
There was much more too The Cure, Cult, Killing joke, Spear of Destiny
Put a friend onto The The and he said they sounded like Lloyd Cole and the commotions. Glad I listened to this expands the playlist
Oh take me back to the 80s
Saw them live croke Park 86
Was shocked 10 years later on Spicks and Specks
That was another 10 years+
There are songs then there's the whole album
This was 1
Uno de los mejores ábumes de todos los tiempos

THIS SONG IS UNBELIEVABLY BEAUTIFUL!
Tragic lyrics but beautifully performed. Love his voice!
