Alders voice is amazing, these guys never got as much credit as they deserved, every album was just throw it on and listen to it straight through, just a great all around band
No Exit turns 30 years old today !!! One of the greatest albums ..it was the soundtrack to the summer of 88. I graduated high school that year and this Operation Mind Crime .Savatage Hall of the Mountain King .Racer X second Heat.. Leatherwolf ..Lion Dangerous Attraction and obsession methods of Madness were on heavy rotation.
I remember i bought a metal blade compilation VHS and this video was on it-blew me away! bought the cd a few days later, this was 1996 when this type of metal was pretty much dead and i was still cranking it that year (my senior year of high school! )
When I remember the late 80's and 90's being in a metal band myself, I think of this band in particular (along with my other favorites). To this day, I will put this album in my stereo at home and destroy the neighborhood. Fates Warning will live forever in my life....
KILLER!!! Liked Fates with Arch, LOVE Fates with Alder! For me, this was on par with Dickinson replacing Diano in Maiden, kicked it up a few notches!!!
I won tickets off of KNAC to see Metallica at the Irvine Meadows Arena! We were on stage in the "Snake Pit" during the whole show! Standing right next to Scott Ian!
remember hearing these guys on UCONN's radio station on saturday afternoons, they there was a metal show that played good music. their 1st album was recorded down the street from where i lived in East Hartford CT. always loved the song The Apparition, brings back memories of many keggers growing up, or not, depending on what you consider growing up. they still sound awesome
Lets face it people. Who the hell sings like most ALL these metal bands nowadays back in the 1980's? That's right..... None of this Top 40 BS. Fact, metal bands had/has the most talented vocalist in music history. We could sit here and list A LOT of names who's power and range would smoke everyone of these crap artist on the billboards today.
7dayspking Odd that only you seem to be the one lost. It's very clear and very true. In today's world this music is not even recognized on any TV music awards show. It's over looked on all the TV music talent shows. Yet compare any of those shows singers to what these guys were doing 20,30 years ago. You just don't see the range and power in these top 40 "popular" singers nowadays.
Dream Theater found their sound by studying bands like Fates Warning. The original vocalist Jon Arch is a friggin' lyrical and structural genius. This is Ray Alder from San Antonio Texas and he is by far the ONLY vocalist that could have stepped into Jons shoes. Ray is a great person and one the best singers to ever come from the area. Check out the new ARCH/MATHEOS project on youtube!
Ray Alder was simply amazing. I love both the John Arch era as well, but I like Alder just as much. If you are into prog metal and these types of vocals and want to check out some of these bands- listen Lethal from Erlanger, Kentucky. Tom Malicot is killer. Lethal--Immune Oracle (aka. Prodigy) from Jacksonville, FL. Featuring William Wren as well as Brent Smedley, the drummer from Iced Earth.) ORACLE - Nightmares (As Darkness Reigns) Juggernaut from Jacksonville, FL. Mark Hurst Amazing vocalist. JuggerNauT with Mark Hurst "Lonely Traveler Video" Enchanter. Brian Betterton - another ass kicking vocalist. ENCHANTER * Dark Rider
I consider them a pure progressive metal band after No Exit. It's like saying Symphony X plays heavy metal. Progressive metal is pretty hard to define when you have riffs and melody that sounds familiar to the power metal scene. Some bands make it hard for us to guess what genre they play (Iced Earth's early career before The Dark Saga). Some days ago I heard someone called Dream Theater's When Dream And Day Unite a power metal album when you hear it's progressive metal all the way.
To the guy that said that Helloween started the euro prog metal scene that is wrong. Helloween is not prog metal. They're more power/speed metal then prog. The top 4 prog metal bands from that era are: 1.Queensryche 2.Crimson Glory 3.Savatage 4.Fates Warning
+jahiddle you are missing Psicotic Waltz in your list, which in my opinion is lot more representative than savatage, then is the eternal question of including or not Rush, but i agree with you that helloween is more power metal, even when people were confused in those times with them and Rhapsody, speed metal is more martin friedman and others.
His voice has changed. I love the maturity in his voice. Age will change your voice, sometimes. But the biggest change comes from not warming up your voice before any performance, smoking, alcohol, coffee, weed. Having been a singer for more than half my life, I once damaged my voice so bad, I had to take 6 months of voice lessons to learn how to warm up, cool down my voice, what to do, what not to do. At 47 I can still hit 99% of the notes I could before. But Ray still has the best voice ever!!!
actually I heard in an interview about 3yrs. ago, he hit a couple of higher notes. But your right those things can hurt your voice. Their style had changed after this, they went in a more melodic direction. But also if you stay in that range and don't use your entire range your voice will weaken. But smoking doesn't help.
Patrick Puffer He also ADMITTED in an interview that he used the wrong technique and chain smoked which explains why after 2 years of touring he struggled to hit high notes, these videos are available on youtube.
Fate's! nice flashback. I still think Ray's voice is UNMATCHED and is still my top 5 overall. Rock on. The universe is a living being, and the big bang was the moment of its conception. - Me
Personally Mr. Zonder played some of the most complex drumming in more modern metal. Even though there are some wonderful drummers, Zonder is a modern Keith Moon/John Bohman
Ray was a king on No Exit, his voice hit very high pitch, actually his voice lose the Incredible range of the past but he's a fabulous singer ever, emotional lines and beautiful voice still
I still get goose bumps when I listen to Ray's early stuff! Ray's voice was a force of nature on "No Exit" and "Perfect Symmetry"! I agree,he's still an excellent singer ,even if he can't reach the stratosphere like he did in the 80's and 90's! He's always maintained that emotion and feeling.
I don't think he simply "lost" his range from one album to the other. He explained that when he started on FW he was trying to sing like other singers, and like Arch, but that afterwards he found his own voice and stopped trying to emulate other singers, even if he was really good at that. I really enjoy this singing, but I have to say that I'd rather listen to his singing nowadays, where it's not about only reaching high notes, but achieving the right ones.
He's a liar, watch live shows from FW you notice after a while he would still try hitting the high notes but couldn't, he sounded terrible after only 2 years of singing high pitch, he fucked his voice from smoking and probably the wrong technique.I still love his voice but he's kidding himself if he says he merely quit doing high notes, why didn't he do even one high note after pleasant shade of grey? someone needs to ask him to sing a high note to prove it.
I think smoking played a part in Ray's vocal decline, though it can't be entirely blamed - in an interview with Bill Martin for the book 'Pro Secrets Of Heavy Rock Singing' he admitted to having injured his voice more than once through poor technique in his high register and deliberate constriction/throat tightening when distorting notes. A real shame. Remember guys, good sound doesn't always equal good technique!
anvil, metal church, fates warning, exodus, overkill, king diamond, prong, helmet, metallica, venom, dam i could go on forever.love metal.i grew up in the 70s so i seen it coming with bands like sabbath an zepplin paving the way.
Sorry for the delayed reply, maybe UH is one of the pioneers to add a lot of Tolkien's inspiration in their songs, I can't tell you if they inspired Power metal at all but if you add their lyrics in a heavy metal band it will be labeled as a Power/Folk Metal band
Ray Alder a man who with that voice should need no introduction... Unfortunately a lot of music out there sucks... So there are bands like fates warning who wouldn't get the recognition they deserve but there's still no getting around the talent of this man's voice at this point and the fact that he's still out there kicking some progressive anus right on it's Fates Warning will always be one of my favorite bands that's for sure.. Right on. !!!!!!!!! Rock on. !!!!!!!!!;
I already know CG, Transcendence is a "progpower" masterpiece. Btw, now that the new singer joined Queensrÿche, they will gain more recognition from most of QR fans that didn't know them
I think yes, but when helloween came out with those 'keepers' the meaning of power metal changed a lot, but I still consider AtG a 'power metal' album. It has fast songs, riffs full of melody, high-pitched vocals, mystic themes and a lot more things, and this album came out in '86, so it's one of the first.
SoundOfWhiteNoise1 Metallica's "Justice" album was good. iron maiden's "seventh son" was good. and about 10 great Thrash bands and death metal bands were great.
Susan Taylor Exactly. 'Seventh Son... ' by Maiden actually propelled me into underground metal. One album I worshiped was 'Socialized Hate' from Atrophy. And as far as more mainstream it was 'Blow Up Your Video' and 'Ram It Down'.
@flames669 I absolutely agree with you on Fates becoming a US Iron Maiden if Arch remained with the band. They could have even overshadow the big American thrash bands of the 80s.
Steve Zimmerman on the skins !!! Mark Zonder was better ( possibly the best drummer ever that's not named Peart ) I love seeing Zimmerman playing in the videos though, metal tough .
He lost his upper range entirely, probably from chain smoking etc, or possibly the wrong technique. Even the following album called A perfect symmetry, you can notice a little strain, he doesn't hit notes as high as on no exit, and then Parallels, he rarely hits high notes but he still does in a couple songs and after that he still sang pretty high on a pleasant shades of grey but no glass breaking high notes, after that he could only sing mid range but his voice sounds amazing still.
+Banda Vesúvio Hahah, yeah Fates Warning's late 80s stuff was pretty Death metally, then again their early 80s stuff was quite similar....just with less distorted guitars. That really says a lot about Death metal =)
Yes, correct. HELLOWEEN was Power Metal but who was the first Prog Metal band from Europe?... The U.S. had Queensryche and FW then DT later on... Iron Maiden was somewhere in between but neither...
Hard to say - maybe Mekong Delta or Sieges Even, but both were more on the speed/thrash side of things, like Watchtower was. Conception was true prog metal, but came out in the early '90s...
@metalheart80s Look When Arch left the band Fates went a different direction with Ray Alder when he joined the band. I Belive if Arch stayed in the band Fates warning would of been big metal band like Iron Maiden. You have to admit their first two albums were epic master pieces. Fates warning with Arch in my opinion was the American version of Iron Maiden.
dont get me wrong man, i love jacksons. I own a sl3mg soloist and a shitty kelly. the kelly has jacksons in it and thier not very good xD but like the soloist with the emgs sounds KILLER. and no he has jackson picksup in that rhodes, you can see becuase on the pickups it says jackson
Not true about Kiske, they also have some fantastic albums with Andi Deris singing. Also, two completely different bands - apples to oranges, why even compare...
I'm more old school... Helloween started the European prog metal movement... Dream Theater raised the bar when FW softened up after "No Exit"... Then there was a band from New Jersey called Symphony X... =)... Followed by Kamelot, Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, ect. All from Europe... My favorite new prog metal band is Pyramaze... They are on their 3rd singer. Lance King was my favorite... Great singer still looking for the right band...
Kamelot is from the US, not Europe - and Blind Guardian came up close behind Helloween in the late '80s, long before Symphony X, Kamelot, & Rhapsody, etc....
Well "big" is relative - I'd say they started to gain traction in the late '90s, and really started to take off as a headliner around 2001-2003, i.e. Blackwater Park / Deliverance / Damnation. Then when they signed to Roadrunner in 1995 they went to the next level with Ghost Reveries, etc....
I am 51 and I don't care much for newer metal. I mean there is some good musicianship like with Amon Amarth or Arch Enemy, I just don't care for this growling shit vocals. What happened to plain singing? It sounded better and plus it was easier to understand the lyrics, it's hard to understand when somebody is growling like they got to take a shit !
Sérgio Monteiro They told the drummer Zmmerman he cannot stand the skills been needed. So he was fired after NO EXIT. Mark Zonder came. His skills been shown on the next release ‚Part of a Machine‘ and on the following records. Nevertheless NO EXIST is one of the best Fares Warning records. I love it.
Yup. What I like more than his vocal ability is the fragility with which he sings as well as the incredibly memorable vocal lines he comes up with. Even with his diminished range, his performance is outstanding.
Omair Sheikh , He's still amazing. I love the new CD and I'm fortunate enough to be going to see them on June 27th in Pittsburgh. It's my 1st time getting to see them. So I'm so excited. He still has an amazing voice. He didn't burn it out like Geoff Tate. I saw Queensryche in December, with Todd La Torre and they actually sounded really good. Geoff came to Pittsburgh in February and it was an acoustic set with Irish jigs. I wasn't into it and didn't go. I used to love his voice and I have all the Queensryche CD'S up to Promised Land. Fates Warning is so much better. FATES FOREVER!
Alders voice is amazing, these guys never got as much credit as they deserved, every album was just throw it on and listen to it straight through, just a great all around band
No Exit is still one of my fav albums
Amazing vocal performance, as always
Best band ever. Forever and ever... ❤️

Killer music, guitars, awsome, drumming is insane, by far some the best metal in the world.
Love this song!!!
I remember hearing this song on 105.5 KNAC, the Los Angeles metal radio station which is unfortunately no longer on the air.
I won tickets off of KNAC to see Metallica at the Irvine Meadows Arena! We were on stage in the "Snake Pit" during the whole show! Standing right next to Scott Ian!

Great underrated band
Lets face it people. Who the hell sings like most ALL these metal bands nowadays back in the 1980's? That's right..... None of this Top 40 BS. King Diamond :D
Yes......heavy metal vocalists have superior technique to their Classical counterparts *Facepalm* Just leave.
7dayspking Perhaps we have a misunderstanding. Or is this above your head? Welcome to just finding this remark months and months later.
ZBlacktt You suggested that metal vocalists were superior to all others....so perhaps you'd like to elaborate a little further.
7dayspking Odd that only you seem to be the one lost. It's very clear and very true. In today's world this music is not even recognized on any TV music awards show. No Exit is the best thrash metal album.
Ray Alder is not Greek............He is hispanic;born in San Antonio Texas.Ray Balderrama is his real name.SA born SA proud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
he's from puerto rico dude
The guitar player Jim Matheos is Greek... He must have confused band members... Ray Alder is Hispanic from Texas.
@Neueregel: Nope, Ray Alder (real name Balderrama) was born in Texas. He has Mexican roots. He's definitely not from Puerto Rico.
Ray is from Texas! Nothing else need be said. Texas yields the best musicians.
Ray Alder is Mexican and he's from Corpus Cristie. He's a fellow Texan. I love him so much. He so beautiful and has the voice of an angel.
wow all these years and this is how many views they got??? such a shame...they are awesome!!! listened to this in high school!!!
Dream Theater found their sound by studying bands like Fates Warning. The original vocalist Jon Arch is a friggin' lyrical and structural genius. Silent cries. Behind outcast eyes... Me arrepio todo e viajo pra longe ouvindo este clássico.
Great band talented musicians and composers
Ray Alder was simply amazing. I love both the John Arch era as well, but I like Alder just as much. If you are into prog metal and these types of vocals and want to check out some of these bands- listen
Lethal from Erlanger, Kentucky. Tom Malicot is killer.
Lethal--Immune
Oracle (aka. Prodigy) from Jacksonville, FL. Featuring William Wren as well as Brent Smedley, the drummer from Iced Earth.)
ORACLE - Nightmares (As Darkness Reigns)
Juggernaut from Jacksonville, FL. Mark Hurst Amazing vocalist.
JuggerNauT with Mark Hurst "Lonely Traveler Video"
Enchanter. Brian Betterton - another ass kicking vocalist.
ENCHANTER * Dark Rider
I love Brian Betterton on the last 2 Kill Ritual albums, to me he took them to the next level...
Exclente Quality!!! Thanks !!!
This was their last good album. They were so awesome between 1985 and 1988.
No Exit was such an orgasmic album...
Alders voice sounds a bit like James from Helstar to me on the early albums. Both bands are great.
I consider them a pure progressive metal band after No Exit. It's like saying Symphony X plays heavy metal. Progressive metal is pretty hard to define when you have riffs and melody that sounds familiar to the power metal scene. To the guy that said that Helloween started the euro prog metal scene that is wrong. Helloween is not prog metal. They're more power/speed metal then prog.
The top 4 prog metal bands from that era are:
1.Queensryche
2.Crimson Glory
3.Savatage
4.Fates Warning
+jahiddle You're right, HELLOWEEN was more Power Metal but Michael KISKE was definitely a Prog style singer who was very much like GEOFF TATE, ALDER.
+jahiddle you are missing Psicotic Waltz in your list, which in my opinion is lot more representative than savatage, then is the eternal question of including or not Rush,
but i agree with you that helloween is more power metal, even when people were confused in those times with them and Rhapsody, speed metal is more martin friedman and others.
+jahiddle I grew up listening to all that music, back then we really didn't label metal we just called it metal. It was better than country or pop!!
I Agree..
5. Watchtower
been a long time.. brings me back
Lots of great Fates albums but none were as thick and heavy as No Exit. I wish they could have made just one more with this style.
Wauu same exactly jamie labrie ..ohh god..first time listen this band..saluteee..im from malaysia..love music pro metal
Jesus that voice the best in prog-metal history
Young man has some good pipes on him
Right after Geoff Tate back in the days

This South African approves of these guys :D
He is back!
Personally Mr. Zonder played some of the most complex drumming in more modern metal. Even though there are some wonderful drummers, Zonder is a modern Keith Moon/John Bohman
amazing
What a voice! I should have paid more attention to this band besides "Night On Brocken".
MATHEOS / ARESTI FOREVER!!!

I've spotted Ray smoking in some pics. Smh. I like his new style as well though which is more mellow.

Fates Warning RULES!!!!! ROCK ON!!!!!!
not many know this band...i do and so awesome
Look at Ray and his Steve Perry hair. LOL, I love it!
Awesome !
omg, love.................
total badass!
Ray Alder a man who with that voice should need no introduction...
Unfortunately a lot of music out there sucks...
So there are bands like fates warning who wouldn't get the recognition they deserve but there's still no getting around the talent of this man's voice at this point and the fact that he's still out there kicking some progressive anus right on it's Fates Warning will always be one of my favorite bands that's for sure.. Right on. !!!!!!!!! Rock on. !!!!!!!!!;
I already know CG, Transcendence is a "progpower" masterpiece. Btw, now that the new singer joined Queensrÿche, they will gain more recognition from most of QR fans that didn't know them
one of my old favorites...for years I thought Ray Alder was native American, then learned he was greek.
Ray Alder's real last name is Valderrama. He is of Latin descent. The guitar player Jim Mateos is greek.
Fuck yeah!! Cannot believe its been 35 yrs.
Awsome
Chris was never an official member. But he IS one badass vocalist!
This is some great prog metal.
@SoundboyEric
This song and the corresponding album was issued one year earlier than DT's first, so...
This band came out of Connecticut, one of few to go on to any success.
I went to school with him many moons ago 😊
I liked the hair that ray had back in the 80's
best metal album of 1988
+Susan Taylor '88 was a great year for metal. That is quite a statement.
How could anyone overlook Queensryche's Operation:Mindcrime...probably top five prog rock albums ever let alone just 1988.
Fates Warning -- All hail the Drummer on Puppet Strings! - Never Before has a Drummer Done So good -! That is not Frank!!!
@flames669 I absolutely agree with you on Fates becoming a US Iron Maiden if Arch remained with the band. They could have even overshadow the big American thrash bands of the 80s.

can ray adler still hit those notes? all their later stuff like this new album have him sounding so different, great but different.
Sadly no, Ray hasn't been able to hit highs for many many years.
Try SIEGES EVEN (also from Germany): Steps (1990) & Sense For Change (1992)
DAT SINGER! AAAAAH!
godly
the beggining of melodic death metal

+Banda Vesúvio Hahah, yeah Fates Warning's late 80s stuff was pretty Death metally, then again their early 80s stuff was quite similar....just with less distorted guitars. That really says a lot about Death metal =)
Being in high school during the mid-late 90s was the worst time! Metal was pretty much dead minus a handful of bands.
shredding leads.
Full Power Song....

2018 Sept. 5th. .SILENT CRIES !

They need to get the real Fates back in my view, not all these phonys see
It's a good thing he's using EMGs here then, isn't it?
Jackson's a pretty good brand, yo; don't knock 'em.
Also, Helloween has not been anything since Mike Kiske left...facts are facts. Both great bands....but the talent in Fates Warning is BEYOND Helloween
Not true about Kiske, they also have some fantastic albums with Andi Deris singing. Also, two completely different bands - apples to oranges, why even compare...

The riffing on this song is much catchier than 99.9% of the new music in metal
I am 51 and I don't care much for newer metal. I mean there is some good musicianship like with Amon Amarth
or Arch Enemy, I just don't care for this growling shit vocals. What happened to plain singing? It sounded better and plus it was easier to understand the lyrics, it's hard to understand when somebody is growling like they got to take a shit !
A real band.
Sérgio Monteiro
They told the drummer
Zmmerman he cannot stand the
skills been needed.
So he was fired after NO EXIT.
Mark Zonder came.
His skills been shown on the next release
‚Part of a Machine‘ and on the
following records.
Nevertheless
NO EXIST is one of the
best Fares Warning records.
I love it.
No Exit
Fates \m/
Every generation has their talented musicians unfortunately the last 30 years they have been overshadowed by (c)rap.
2 bands amazing QUEENSRYCHE , N FATES but fates always in underground
in*, moving on
You got the european prog like stratovarious
total turn on...this song when young i knew awesome
I don't think these guys or death angel get enuff credit.
Much prefer Alder to Arch
Omair Sheikh , I definitely do. His vocal ability is off the charts. Moreover, he's extremely sexy!
@Danyerd Both are beasts anyway
I sing this song to my cousin Shanta when she hurt me bad I let my anger to her with this song
I think Uriah Heep was the first Prog Metal band and they go back to 1970
